  • Explore the new features, tools and workflows for animating characters in Houdini 20. Learn how to pose your IK controls in an FK manner, how to work with selection sets, animation sliders and how to add dynamics to your characters. This session will focus on a viewport centric workflow that is designed around the needs of animators.
Warren Leathem is a Senior Animator on the character team at SideFx. Prior to joining SideFx in 2021, he spent over 20 plus years as an Animator, Animation Lead and Animation Supervisor in the film and tv industry, focused almost entirely on character animation. Having previously worked at studios such as MPC, Weta Digital, and Animal Logic, he brings that experience to focus not only on animators doing amazing work, but also on how animation fits into the overall production environment and workflows.

I’ve noticed the “fake” fk system doesn’t take into account rotation, so the ik control will zip straight to its next position, and not move in an arc. It’s a cool idea, but not quite practical in a real world scenario, as you’ll have to key in your animation arcs. The system is potentially revolutionary, but this one thing holds it back.
Other than that, posing and animation feels great, love the sliders and the revamped graph editor. Would it be too much to ask for some mirror pose tools? 😬

Warren mentioned in the presentation that the was for posing at the moment. If you check out the Luchador and Chicken rigs in the Content Library you will see that thy have FK/IK switches - www.sidefx.com/contentlibrary/luchador-chicken/

I thought: oh my god, it is true? Can u have ik and fk without switching and matching fk to ik and ik to fk? and after month, i read your comment:) Feeling sad now, as this seems so natural to have both ik and fk the way shown in the video...

@@ziyaddin88 I definitly did sad face when I realized this, but there is a way you can get temp pivots and get true fk motion.
If you create a null at the pivot point you want, say a hand pivoting around the tip of a finger, and constrain the hand to the null, you can get a temp pivot like you can in Animbot (for example)

@@ziyaddin88 Yeah it's a clever demo video, but it doesn't reflect what APEX is at the current state. It's an extremely barebone and buggy system rn.
I'll say just don't bother. Wait for at least H22 (that's how long it took to make Solaris from borderline broken to usable).

@@KodraStudio Why would you use Houdini to animate a character? He is absolutely not suitable for this. Use Animbot or Iclone8.

please do the simplest lesson on BlendShape in Apex, from the very beginning and not already on the finished scene, just take a ball and change its geometry by moving the control point, what is so difficult?
