- The history of the New Jack Swing Movement by Teddy Riley and many other New Jack Swing acts.
New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Its influence, along with Hip Hop, seeped into pop culture and was the definitive sound of the inventive Black New York club scene. It fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of Hip Hop and Dance-Pop with the Urban Contemporary Sound of R&B. The #NewJackSwing style developed as many previous music styles did, by combining elements of older styles with newer sensibilities. It used R&B style vocals sung over Hip Hop and Dance-Pop style influenced instrumentation. The sound of New Jack Swing comes from the Hip Hop "Swing" Beats created by drum machine, and hardware samplers, which was popular during the Golden Age of Hip Hop, with contemporary R&B style singing.

So glad I grew up in this era and still listen to the throwbacks of the late 80s and 90s to this day.

Teddy has been a Big Influence to me. I always loved New Jack Swing ever since I was a kid and today I am writing songs with a 90s Feel to it. Thank You Lord for the Genius and Creativity of Teddy Riley.
I’m from Guatemala and I’ve always love the New Jack Swing thank you Teddy!
I am 30 years old, brazilian. I discovered the New Jack Swing just in 2016. Enough to say: that time was a golden era of music. New Jack Swing, R&B...I wished that songs back on the world.

I’m almost 43 yrs old. I grew up in the NJS era! It was the greatest time ever! Music, fashion, tv shows, movies! Good memories! Thanks Teddy & every one else responsible for those days!
New Jack Swing takes me back to being a kid in the early 90s. it’s a good feeling to think about that time. so much flavor in the late 80s early 90s. one of the best eras in music.
I have so much respect for Teddy Riley, what a genius. Oh my goodness!!
Today in History: Keith Sweat released "I Want Her", Monday 7th September 1987, "I Want Her became the first New Jack Swing track and on January 30, 1988, “I Want Her” became the first New Jack Swing hit to reach #1 on Billboard’s Top 100 R&B/Hip-Hop Single charts.
I Want Her” quickly solidified him into the R&B/New Jack Swing artist he is today. Initially, Keith and co-producer Teddy Riley collaborated on this track because Sweat told Teddy that he didn’t have enough material for the album; it was Teddy’s suggestion that the two Harlem natives worked together. They ended up writing the lyrics over the phone while Keith was working his day job at the stock exchange, helping to ignite the making of a classic album in Make It Last Forever. The duo eventually penned 6 of the 8 tracks included on the album, including the single after which he named the album: “Make It Last Forever”. Long Live The #NewJackSwing Movement, Long Live #NJS4LIFE!

Teddy riley is a super producer
I absolutely love me some Teddy Riley!!! Such a musical genius!!
That snare sound is so iconic: it's like a 2x4 hitting a radio playing static.
Teddy my boy . I can't believe I have so much of his music in my collection. I can't believe that music is written off personal experience. Time for me to get busy. I have a keyboard ,don't know how to play but can make up beats.
Sandra Young 💯💯
Too much memories. "Before I let you go" especially brings tears of nostalgia to my eyes.
Man...I had every artist in my collection that was popping....Guy...Boy george....everybody, and had a party right by myself...Those were the days!!!
I’m 31 and been down with the New Jack Swing fashion since 2009 but the decade of the 90’s since 2003. I wish it was possible to go back in time I am so sick and tired of looking at 90’s videos I wanna be in the 90’s in person. I wanna experience the New Jack Swing movement. I wanna cry 😢 lol
If it wasn't for Teddy Riley it would be no New Jack Swing movement
Remember also TR also had Chad Hugo & Pharrell has his protege from a school talent contest . He had them on the Blacksteet first album and other big tunes of the 90's era
This guy tr is an absolute genius. Had no idea he left such an imprint on music
Teddy is the greatest producer of all time. What we call R&B today is actually New Jack Swing.
Teddy Riley is the King of New Jack Swing! I remember all of this, Teddy was the real shit, there is no other!
I had this recorded on video when I was 12 years old. Crazy I ran across it on TH-cam.
Congratulations to Teddy Riley on receiving the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
I believe this mini documentary was done in 1999.
Playin Sonic on the Megadrive in the early 90s as a kid is what got me into this genre. Teddy is a legend.

New jack swing is the best thing ive studied. I can dance so i took it out on a marjor step in records....mr riley and guy are put together.
Guy's sophomore album "The Future" was was dope af!
Teddy Riley is one of the most revolutionary producers ever
I was 10 when NJS first hit the radio. This was my favorite music at the time. Such a classy sound. Truly a highpoint in modern R&B history.
This video was epic for me in ways I can't even explain!
Imagine being a kid in a foreign country (did not even understand the English language) and listening to many of the songs featured in this video... Dancing to them, being moved by them, being hypnotized by the beats and the melodies... but never really aware of the faces and talent behind the music.
New Jack Swing being a term that wasn't even mentioned or understood in my home country. It was just GOOD MUSIC to me, the name didn't matter!!!
Fast forward a few decades and now in the USA as an adult, I learn about this man behind the sound and the hits that SOOOOO MAANY incredible artists were part of.
I was ignorant to the impact and the influence that Teddy brought to the music industry as a whole. Today I can say with confidence that I not only became a fan of hip-hop and R&B because of Teddy Riley, but it is the reason why I became a DJ and performed for over 20 years playing this music and a bunch more to the masses. This music changed my life. I am in awe at this realization and so thankful to the musicians and Mr. Riley for the music and inspiration. Not only a true legend in music but apparently a wholesome human being that cared about his peers and looked out for other talents in the industry. ❤
What a blast of nostalgia! What an amazing era for music!!!
Thank you and God Bless ya'll!

Teddy Riley is the only producer to create his own genre!
Night & Day was KYLE WEST, another underrated producer of the 90s
Right. I've read that Al and Kyle had Night and Day and most of the album done on their own. Maybe Teddy helped with some things.
@@dsg3053 Al B & Teddy worked together back in the day on the Guy Album writing & production(Al B is no slouch himself on production) on the track YOU CAN CALL ME CRAZY..dont know how much else they worked together on
Hats off for brother Teddy Teddy Jam for me!!!!

My biggest introduction to New Jack Swing was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack back in 1990 when i was 7 years old. New Jack was the sound of my early childhood

14:47 Was just thinking, there is no New Jack Swing documentary without the great Dangerous album.
Also, speaking of Michael, I didn't know they sampled "I Cant Help It" in a NJS song. 18:25
I wasn't really feeling the Finally album when it first came out. Maybe I need to listen to it again.

OMG Sherry Carter...
I'm old enough to remember most of this, even though I was about 9 or 10. I have a question about the instrumental at about 13.30, does anyone known what song that is? It sounds like Let's Chill but I can't quite place it. Can anyone tell me what it is?
I like is the song
Teddy jam for me yeah.
Kyle West did Night & Day I thought?
rip andre harrell
New jack swing melody is based off of princes minniapolus sound. Its just break beats under prince Like melody n harmonies. Alot of princes early Work is a rough draft of that sound. Its crazy how nobody never credited prince for the new jack swing sound. Jimmy jam n Terry Lewis aswell
When this year was over that's when soul music left
Jam and Lewis are huge influences and it's obvious. You can also hear some of the residual Prince "Linn Drum" sound cutting through Teddy's sampler. Overall though I think we are all winners in the race no matter who coined the genre. It's more fun to trace the connections and all the networking that is hinted at here. I also love that both Jam and Lewis and Teddy Riley branched out into spaces outside of r&b. They are very similar in their approach and commitment to the craft of music!
Wow I didn't know he did " I don't want to fall in love "
I had absolutely zero clue. I thought this was all the Jane Child production
That was a number one hit in the week of April 1990. Not number one in R&B but number one in the pop charts
I think he did the remix only. I believe she did the original song.
Teddy Riley is the GREATEST MUSIC PRODUCER OF ALL TIME and Michael Jackson is the GREATEST RECORDING ARTIST/PERFORMER/POP STAR OF ALL TIME!
13:30-14:25 ❤️❤️❤️
