These guys blow my mind, the amount of tech that goes into drag now is crazy
And here I thought it was just a wig and a dress.
It’s amazing but at the same also ridiculous. Deep pockets and sponsors have turned this sport into money gets you the win. The true car building seat of the pants drag racing is being over taken by “the rich guys” vs “the everyday joe” or battle of the rich guys” just an average person wanting to compete with other racers and their cars in the same category don’t stand a chance against deep pocket racers. I’m not hating on the people that have money or sponsors or whatever. I would love to be able to build anything that my brain can think up. But there should be some type of different category that doesn’t team up a guy that owns a small mechanic shop. Building his car after work and on the weekends, against a person with sponsors, unlimited resources, and tons of money. Like I said I’m not hating on anyone. Everyone has the right to go at it however they see fit. But they have took the fun out of going and competing in a bracket car on the weekends. I’m sure if I had unlimited resources I would be running right there beside the big boy’s. Just in my opinion, which is basically worthless to everyone else is if you have to hire people to work on your car for you. What’s the point ? Just to say you went faster than the other guy ? It’s that feeling of accomplishment you get when you can compete successfully in a field of other car’s. Knowing you actually built your car, your hands have been on every single in of it. I guess the thrill of just driving is enough for some people.
@@lwjw3184 Wait what? You are complaining about these rich guys? There is still a ton of racing for the small guys trust me. What you see on here is what makes the money for everyone involved. Tom has worked his ass off to get where he is just like Larry Larson and others. Yes big pockets, big paydays but also big losses when things go wrong. You aren't actually involved in the racing scene so you wouldn't get all the different classes that support guys like me.
@@lwjw3184 Go to the drag strip and tell me how many pro mods you see. Most are still using small blocks, LSs, Coyotes, etc. If tech is getting better it's not a bad thing that wealthy people use it to go faster, things progress. Pro mods are now much faster than fuel dragsters of the 70s for crying out loud
Went to my first Drag Race in 1967 , been a hard core fan since . it was a big FC meet...there were 3 , and at least 75 different sling shot combos . But I'll never stop getting excited as soon as I hear headers . I'll never stop being amazed Thanks to people like Tom . Goodluck this weekend

@@cowrocket3870 Sure, for safety reasons they would never let them run together, but the first thing I thought when I saw the title was a like 3 second head start at the zMAX Dragway in Concord. Similar to those "F1 vs. fighter jet" or "Lewis Hamilton vs. Superbike" videos.

I know it’s a full blown pro mod and not meant to be comfortable but that looks seriously uncomfortable to drive on drag week... is it more comfortable then it looks?

I'm a fat guy and watching me get in and out of my cage makes people laugh. However.....I've never fallen to the ground...that was pretty funny. However dislocating your knee makes me cringe...mine do the same thing and it takes me 30 mins or so get it put back in. In any case I'm definitely watching your vids from now on. Thanks for making them

I said the same foolish thing to a Jet car owner at Brotherhood Raceway in 1983 (an outlaw track on Terminal Terminal Island in SoCal-LA Harbor area), asked him for a $500.00 money bet to dial in against my 12 flat 63 Dodge Polara bracket car on a 5 10ths tree in the quarter.
He accepted, it was foolish but I knew I would be at the finish line first and by it before he came by me, and shutdown area was open and wide so I could release the throttle and drift out wide right fast as he shot by.
I won the bracket race, and the bet (he did not blow me off the track, but after he went by, he clicked off as I drifted right, and his thrust wake alone shook my car hard & flat shattered my windshield, it stayed put, but needed replacement immediately the next day, and the money I won fully covered it plus dinner for both of us and his crew and a few of my friends.
Great experience, fun times, great bragging rights (to win a bracket race between a jet car and a heavy slow car)...But, I never again asked such a foolish question, and grew instantly to grow up fast,, gained an appreciation of being older and wiser. I would never want to repeat that stunt again during this lifetime.
I only won because I knew I was deadly on the .500 tree and he wasn't and I could run dead on the number, and escape with my life because he guaranteed he would click off at 1,320 feet. He pushed hard and was dead late and broke out bad.
I think he clicked off at 1,340 though, as I saw a hint of flame out of the left corner of my eye as he blew past like a rocket and my windshield went boom, and just spiderwebbed everywhere as I slowed from 114mph quickly, left my Bell Star helmet shield down on the return to the pits to collect the bet so I could get my windshield replaced the next day.
We all went out to dinner and laughed like little kids together. It was really a foolish thing to even attempt, but I am older and much wiser today. Would never attempt against a fuel car. Jet cars go perfectly straight, and slightly slower. But they push air in their wake that is instantaneous as they pass, even if not that close. (I was at least 50' to his right when he blew by my car....my .504 light 12.017 (on a 12.01 dial), at 114.76 to his .676 light 7.128 (on a 7.18 dial) at 189.76. Easy win plus $500.00 grudge bet win, loss of a windshield $178.00 and a $200.00 plus Dinner check, netted a lousy hundred bucks and a chitload of fun, and a cool true story and memories of a foolish move to never be repeated by me at least.
I expected the thrust wake, but the windshield damage I never considered until it went booof. Ooooops.

Apparently, the track official in blue, at the start line, was serious about not letting the two different types of cars race at the same time.

I get that you race your car on the street but it’s not a street legal car it’s a drag car that you race on the streets illegally. I’m all for street racing but in a legal street car is what I’ve always consider a true street car. I’ve raced both kinds on the street and there’s a huge difference in the two

Tom, you know it's pretty good when you get Steve Morris in Florida as your engine builder/ tuner. Top of the food chain in jacketed 481X endurance motors. Could try increasing the exhaust valve size and one less on the intake to stretch the flow out when the back pressure starts rising.

@@danmyers9372 it’s sad. My child hood track closed a few years ago (Englishtown). Went to summer nationals there every year. Now I can’t even tell you who is running anymore. Same can be said for nascar, and both them and the nhra seems to be struggling. Oh well, their loss.

Walking deep in the pits @ GatorNationals I saw the guys working on the car. Knew the car right away. I told my family that is the fastest street legal car in the world. Sitting in section DD on the starting line we heard the announcer say we got a fire at the top end of the track. Looked at the Jumbotron and felt sick when a I saw it was Tom and his Camaro. Relieved to see he was OK. Fix her up fellas and lets go do it again. Will be cheering for you.

@@thekingsservant1104 just look up the sick seconds camaro and drag week. All the cars in drag week drive track to track towing a trailer. Look up steve morris and the SMX engine, its a fully water jacketed 481x platform.

Not sure where you are from , but I was born in Michigan but grew up in So. California . I moved back to Michigan and some of the Northern Michigan accents are like the movie Fargo , some not quite that bad .
