I lived in Costa Rica for 9 years and I miss it. I love Central America. I went to Panama many times, and went to Belize once too. Last week at work I used my Spanish speaking skills to translate for my boss and Latino sub contractors and a Mexican complimented my Spanish. I enjoy helping and surprising Spanish speaking people in the states, they don't expect a 50 year old longhaired hippie dude to joke around with them in their language.
Hopefully I can find a way to support myself working online so I can move back to Costa Rica to stay. I have a son there who needs me.

The ignorance of american people labeling central americans as mexicans, I'm pretty sure the behaviors, treatment, and respect towards you was different in each country. All I know is central americans are more humble and accepting people towards foreigners.

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Trancymind I don't think of them as "Mexicans", I think of them as Latinos. Which means part native American to me. They're usually very nice to me because I speak Spanish to them and treat them like equals, like anyone else. I know I'm unique but I don't think of people from the USA as special or better or any of that flag waving silliness. People are people. There are good and bad in every crowd. I mostly met good people in Costa Rica and the Latinos I meet here are also usually good folks. But if you look, and sometimes even if you don't look, you can find bad ones. I'm white as rice and have no problem saying there are plenty of terrible white people.
You're right, Americans are often very ignorant and don't know much about other places. It's a shame because traveling opens eyes.

Forgot to mention the settling of Britain along the coast from Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua, all the way to blue fields, they recognize the mizquito kingdom, set up a trading company, and named hundreds of towns , islands. The bay islands were returned back to Honduras in late18 hundreds, we still embrace English as a first language among thousands of our people of afro Caribbean ancestry and indigenous. The garífuna people were brought by the British to Roatán, today they number in the thousands with a unique language and culture. There is more history here! It was impossible for Guatemala and Mexico to "inherit" Belize from Spain because under International Laws , Spain did not acquire the title to the territory of Belize. To do so, Spain would have had to continously occupy, possess and administer all the territory of Belize, which they did not do. Such title to Belize was held by the British continously until 1981, when it was passed to the Belizean people.

Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, has had an independent government controlled by the UK for well of over 150 years and only gained Independence in the last few decades. The majority of the people that live in the nation of Belize want to keep it that way. I don't believe the World Court is going to rule that Belize or Belice, as the Guatemalan government calls it, is part of Guatemala. I used to live in Belize and Guatemala in the 1970's so I know the history. Oh, it was a road not a railroad at least at first when the deal you speak of was agreed to in 1859.@@Ensinger5784

They never had the authority to give independence to a territory ALWAYS IN DISPUTE, as this video clearly explains, the ball was never in POSSESSION of neither colonial power. The original cradle and center if Maya Civilization it is still in Guatemala with thousands of years PREDATING any British Pirate illegal incursions into the Peten Territory south if Yucatan. That is why the International Court od Justice is even considering, the super load of documents, maps, currency, drawings, historical, cultural, religiosos, DNA sequencing, physiognomy, forensic linguistics, folk studies (among many other evidences) that prove South Belice at least, is part of Guatemala. And no, the expectation is not for La Hague to rule in favor of the people if Belice (which is not in litigation, ONLY A TERRITORY IS IN DISPUTE, not the nation nor republic nor sovereignty of the belicean peoples ONLY A TERRITORY [ maritime, air space, land, fluvial, lacustre etc ] If the people of Belice truly believed the present day litigation is going to go their way, they would press strongly for a prompt resolution and quick judge decision, but rather, they keep kicking the ball down the pitch, milking the clock, finding excuses, disrupting the process, throwing distractions HOPING THE PROBLEMS WILL GO AWAY, they will not. Guatemala will eventually recover at least part of South Belice and Blizeans know that, thus this English Speaking guy taking a explicit and one sided route to try and change some minds. Not gonna happen. The court will be fair, logical and go for the evidence not feelings, pride nor nationalist biases.

I'm half Honduran, spent a lot of my childhood there, and I've never heard of anyone including Venezuela or Guyana in Central America. It doesn't even make sense geographically: Venezuela, but not Colombia? Doing a little research, I see that some people in the past used the term "Middle America," which included Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana, but according to what I've read, it's never been widely used to mean Central America, the last time anyone did so being in 1962. Central America is quite simply everything between Mexico and Colombia. The Caribbean is the Caribbean, a separate region because of linguistic and cultural differences (Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic notwithstanding).

Another example is the Triple alliance war of South America (very brutal) In which Paraguay lost over 90% of its men in a tragedy where it had to fight against Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, who also barely gained independence AND also had civil war.

I was in Belize in’86. They got their independence from GB in ‘81 but GB still provided their armed forces to keep Guatemala from taking over. Stayed in San Pedro for a month and on Saturday mornings at about 8:00, helicopters would start landing at the little airport on the island. About 10 minutes later, a horde of British soldiers would swarm down the Main street with duffel bags slung over their shoulders and start peeling off into the hotels by the beach. About 15 minutes after that, they would reappear on the street wearing Speedos and head to the bars where they would proceed to drink all day and try to pick fights with the Americans. Got to know some of the locals and they said if you lived in Guatemala and wanted to send a letter to Belize, it had to be addressed as such and such township Belize, Guatemala or it wouldn’t be delivered.

There was a Maya kingdom as late as 1697 ??!! We are usually told that the Maya, as an organized civilization, disappeared before Europeans arrived. "What made the Maya abandon their cities?" is a question that's often asked. Did the Maya of the kingdoms mentioned in this video not inhabit cities? Something doesn't seem to fit together.

There are several errors in historic data, like:
    a) The Court of Guatemala, or Capitania General, include the south of Mexico, more or less Chiapas in modern names.
    b) There's a normal misunderstanding, believe that territorial claims are the same as now, usually the Power claims a territory and all included there, but even to XX century cant be done that way, Territory is the land you force your government and sovereign by Laws, so, in Central America, people like Mezquitos Tribe wasn't part of Spain and that means the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua (mostly), the claim of Central America Continental lands by Spain was contested across centuries by England and France.
    c) You can consult Wikipedia, The Spain Empire XVIII century, to get a better idea what I am talking about, another fact comes from this issue: Independence movements came years before you mentioned, in September 1808, Pablo de Alvarado y Bonilla, from today Cartago, Costa Rica, was arrested in Guatemala, because he delivered printed paper condemning Napoleon France invading Spain and claiming this as an opportunity to be free from the Empire.
    d) The process to Independence was complex, but I try to make short: Spain Emperor Fernando VII was forced to call a Congress in Cadiz, in Spanish: Las Cortes de Cadiz, they enacted the first Constitution of Spanish Empire, late with Napoleon fall and Fernando VII coming back, He tried to derogate the Cadiz Constitution, after 2 years, the Constitution was keep.
The next years come different historical facts due to the every territory own circumstances: Costa Rica and Nicaragua was ONE territory, but they work as 2, in October 29th, 1821, The People of the Trove, decided to be independent, but, People representing today Cartago (this was the capital), Heredia and others, add to the document the whole people to know as Costa Rica, were to join the Mexican Empire, when San Jose and Alajuela, among others, noticed they were betrayed and claimed the assembly decision was to be independent (separate from north or mostly Nicaragua today and/or other State or Empire) and keep neutral until everything was settled down, there was armed battles between people believing in Feudal system against Republican system defenders, when the final battle was won by Republicans, the Mexican Empire has been down, even in 1885, Costa Rica government gave economic aid to fight attempts to create a Central America State.
Nicaragua claimed territories from other States, between Costa Rica and Nicaragua was a "Party", an autonomous territory, in 1824, they decided to come to Costa Rica side.
Now, about the Federal Central America: for shorts periods of years in XIX Century, Costa Rica was part, but most of the People doesn't feel being part of the idea or the Organization, even now, Costa Rica doesn't add to Central America Parliament

which Democratic movements were those? The Sandinistas in Nicaragua where Ortega is dictator to this day? Sorry, but Reagan was right and it was wrong of the American left to support the Sandinistas. The FMLN in El Salvador who tried to overthrow democratically elected governments and have now lost so much power they they hold only 4 seats in our National Assembly? Sorry but it was wrong of the American left to support the FMLN as well. Blaming the US has been a cheap excuse in Latin America, when the fault had been our own. In truth we did not have truly democratic institutions before many of the socialist revolutions started, and the socialist revolutions were not going to bring us democracy either in fact the opposite as Venezuela now shows us, instead we use the excuse of US intervention even when there was none to excuse our own addiction to socialism because we fail so often to embrace any real capitalism in Latin America. The migration of people to the US feeds of this same juvenile desire to be cared for like children - we know if we sneak off to the US we can receive free education, free healthcare, free housing, and never have to pay taxes or share in any adult responsibilities - this is why most migrants to the US do not pay any income tax in the US or their own country we are simply not used to a simple where we have adult responsibilities like Americans do. We vote for socialist snake charmers because we know if they rob from us and become dictators we can always sneak off to the US to be cared for and blame the US for interventions that never really happened and are in truth our own fault. We put the Sandinistas in power, we allowed the FMLN to wage war, we supported the FARC, we did all these things not the US, and in the end we took the money and aid from the US.

I am not knowledgeable of Central America's history besides the one year of school work many years ago. However, I am very much familiar with the history of Colombia and Panama and found some of the statements potentially misleading.
Panama was part of Colombia, fully. In fact it was a departamento, meaning this was post Colombia's attempt to build a federate government which was somehow mentioned but not clear. Panama's local authorities were enticed by the US to become independent as Colombia had other plans for the canal. There were European countries interested in the canal as well and Colombia wanted to retain full control. Colombia had gone through the 1000 day war (internal conflicts) and did not have the means to prevent the US from luring the Panamanian local governments of becoming an independent country and giving away control of a future canal.
This is my quick attempt to call out something that it was key in the history of Panama and Colombia.

Also the political limits (borders) of the Provinces were made by the conquistadors and at that time wasn't a big problem be small, when been part of a big Viceroyalty. Also the San Salvador Province only was joining by 2 small Provinces during the independence, San Miguel and Sonsonate. By example, The Province of Honduras, was bigger than the 3 provinces of El salvador together and Honduras Province was joined by 3 other big regions.

Wait in my history books and everyone that I've read up till now. The mayan civilization had already collapsed by the time europeans arrived and had basically fragmented, and the northern parts were absorbed by the aztecs

It is interesting that British colonies consolidated rather than fragmented after independence compared to Spanish colonies. It is hard to imagine the USA, Canada, Australia and India as a mixture of different nations. If there ever was a case for a separate country it would be Quebec, yet it chose to stay part of Canada. One could make a similar case for India which apart from Pakistan chose to stay together. Why the different outcomes between British and Spanish colonies?

Brits basically exterminated/segregated native population (% of current native population is very small and not integrated in ex-British colonies), and brought a load of European immigrants that consolidated under a single culture (nation); the only exception here is India.
Spanish more or less mixed with native population (they still used natives and mestizos as workforce, criollos and peninsular Spanish were in top of the society), that native population in first place was part of different native nations (different language, religion, culture, etc.) that were forced to be part of viceroyalties created by the the crown and then to independent countries, but that population always felt the urge to return to their pre-Hispanic "countries". Additionally, criollos most frequently were the ones that organized and led the independence movements in ex-Spanish colonies, because they were in disadvantage to peninsular Spanish, who still had more privileges just because they were born in Europe. So criollos basically use their position to gain and consolidate as much power as they could once countries or territories became independent (better to be the head of a dog than the tail of a Lion), leading to further fragmentation.

I would have to disagree with you here. British Raj eventually fragmented into 3 countries: India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Ireland is still divided between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The British mandate of Palestine became Israel and... well, what's left of Palestine. British colonies fragmented just as badly as other colonies because borders were determined for economic efficiency and not around the cultures of the people living there

@@Famous_Athlete_Hashimoto You forgot to mention Cyprus, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. I don’t see how you can blame Israel on Britain as it was subject to a UN resolution and Palestine was never a British colony, Even though India split, there were many people in India and Pakistan who didn’t want it to happen which made it so tragic.
