  • This week we traveled 2 and a half hours south and picked up a 1971 Plymouth Valiant. i found the car scrolling marketplace for $500 and listing was only 11 minutes old so i jumped on it knowing how filthy it was but how good of condition the interior was would make a good candidate for the channel! hope you guys enjoy the video and let me know in the comments if you want to see the motor run for the first time in 29 years!

Marge has a 225 slant six. These usually outlast the vehicle they came installed in, so I bet it will run like it only got shut off yesterday. One of the longest lasting motors ever built. A one owner car I only wish it had not rusted out at all. The interior speaks of the condition it should've been in. RIP grandpa & grandma.

It's the Leaning Tower of Power, the Chrysler 225 Slant 6. There's a trick to removing the back seat, you go to the middle of the seat and then 5 inches over from the center both sides..you can start on either side and push down hard on the front of the seat top while moving it forward, there are two catches that hold the seat in place, depressing them (the whole frame) is what frees them then slide forward....

I agree it is a slant 6. However, you need to check the VIN for the engine code. The 194 cid slant 6 was standard on Valiant and Dart. The 225 was an extra cost option. Speaking of options, this one has the remote controlled mirror on the driver's door.

Great car to find. The Valiant V-100 like this was the base trim level. Without having watched the whole video, Im going to guess Margaret is a parts car. The front end is sagging. That usually means one of two things. Either a torsion bar has broken or the cross members that locate it have broken. The latter is common. The front cross member tends to crack. Caught eatly there is a gusset available to reinforce the cross member.
On that Vakiant, the round key does the trunk lid and, if equipped, the glove box. The 5 sided key does both front doors and the ignition. In the early 70s and before, that was the normal way cars were keyed.
I see it had the remotely controlled mirror on the driver's door. Not hugeky common.
I can't tell from the video, but on a base Valiant like this, do not be surprised if pushing on the wiper knob does not make the windscreen washer work. Base equipment was 2 speed electric wipers with a foot pump for the washers. To get electric washers the 3 speed wiper option was needed.
There are two possibilities for the engine. Base equipment was the 194cid slant 6. Optionally available was the 225 slant 6, both with single barrel Holley carburetors.
I see there is no power brake booster. That means either 4 wheel drum brakes or unassisted front discs, which were the first step up. Vacuum assisted front brakes wete the sevond step up option. I don't see a power steering pump, so that means you likeky have the slower of the three steering boxes. The middle one came with the power steering option. There was an ultra fast, unassisted steering box, but that is very rare.

I had a 1967 Plymouth Valiant with the signet trim package. Slant 6 225, the greatest engine America ever produced. The car was perfect inside and out. Perfect interior, not a spot of rust anywhere. One dent the size of a dime, that was it. But I needed rent so I sold it. The first guy to look at it actually tried to talk me down. I said, man I can’t haggle on this, I need 1200 to cover my rent in one week. He still tried to wheel and deal. Eventually he paid 1200. If he hadn’t crashed it two weeks later he could easily have made 5k profit.
I hated to see it go but the other option was to live in it.

Bingo, the handheld steamer is a must have for this kind of work. It also works great to heat up leather conditioner/cleaners which use collagen. For collagen to work as a leather cleaner/rejuvinator, it needs to be heated so that it's 3 molecular strands unwind causing a capillary effect that floats dirt out of the pores. This restores the elasticity of the leather and keeps it from breaking apart at the cracks. . More than you probably wanted to know but there it is.
I think I want an undercarriage dolly for my sprayer now. That's a great idea.

I daily drove one of these in 1985 - 86. It wasn't mine but a mate's car - for some reason he lent it to me, I forget why! It was a "Chrysler Valiant" in Australia (where I'm from). The slant six is one helluva motor, it's quick off the mark and keeps going all the way up to the top speed on the clock, don't ask me how I know! The one I drove was actually a wagon and for some reason it was bright orange...it had a brown interior, I guess the blue wouldn't have gone with orange.

The recruiter would go to high school or college campuses to look for new prospects. Also used to take prospects to the reserve training center or MEPS to take the ASVAB test, or MEPS for physical examination and to ship out.

I can tell right off the bat- the torsion bar mounts are rotted. The wheels sunken that far down into the fender tops is "No bueno." The destroyed quarter bottoms, fender tops & forward sections, and the vinyl floor covering (the wiper pivot seals go bad, let water in and then it gets trapped between the floorboard footwells & the vinyl, destroying the floor)...the car is very, very rusty to the point you probably can't drive it
