  • Post storm shelling is the shellers dream. Especially when the storm is far enough away to not cause any damage. Whew! I visited my favorite beach just a few days after the storm hit land, so conditions were perfect for finding those beach treasures!

    Once upon a time, in the deep blue sea, there lived a little Bonnet shell named Red. She was known for her vibrant red and cream shell, which shone like a beacon in the underwater kelp forests where she lived. Red was a tiny but fearless mollusk who loved to explore the ocean depths.
    One sunny morning, Red decided to pay a visit to her dear Grandma, a Calico Scallop who lived on the other side of the kelp forest, in a cozy little crevice. She was a gentle and wise bi-valve, with a shell adorned in beautiful, colourful patterns.
    As Red ventured deeper into the kelp forest, she couldn't help but notice a large, menacing cone shell lurking nearby. It was the infamous Coneshell Carl, known for his cunning and appetite for smaller sea creatures. Carl's dark patterned shell struck fear into the hearts of many.
    "Hello there, little Bonnet shell," Carl purred, his voice dripping with insincerity. "Where are you off to on this fine day?"
    Red, being no fool, replied cautiously, "I'm off to visit my Grandma, who lives on the other side of the kelp forest."
    Carl's eyes gleamed with mischief as he plotted to make a quick meal of Red. "Ah, how delightful! But it's a dangerous journey, my dear. Why don't you take the longer route, through the coral caves? It's much safer, you know.
    But Red had heard tales of the Coneshell's tricks before, and she wasn't about to fall for them. "No, thank you, Mr. Coneshell. I'll stick to the kelp forest path."
    As Riding Hood continued her journey, the coneshell slinked away, defeated for the moment. But he was not one to give up easily.
    The kelp forest through which Red and her friends ventured was a mesmerising underwater wonderland. Sunlight filtered through the swaying kelp fronds, creating dappled patterns of light that danced on the sandy ocean floor below. Thick, towering kelp plants, some reaching as tall as a skyscraper, provided shelter and sustenance for a diverse array of marine life.As Red made her way through the kelp forest, she couldn't help but admire the beautiful colours and intricate patterns that adorned the fronds. Schools of small fish darted between the kelp, their scales shimmering in the gentle currents. The forest was alive with the soft hum of creatures going about their daily routines.
    Along the way, Red stopped at a tiny cave that had a sign outside saying " All Whelk-come Cafe ". It was a little snack bar where she had a seaweed and sea-foam smoothy to boost her energy . There she encountered several fascinating underwater inhabitants. She saw and nearly stepped on Flora the Flounder, whose eyes were on one side of her flat, diamond-shaped body, camouflaging herself perfectly with the sandy bottom. Flora shared tales of her adventures blending in with the ocean floor and the amusing mishaps she'd had and things she heard .
    There was a clever clam named Cecilia who gave her a pearl of wisdom, and a charming Hermit Crab named Dandy who offered to accompany her part of the way.
    Meanwhile, the Carl the Coneshell, not to be outwitted, sought the help of some mischievous Sea Urchins to set up a seaweed trap for Red. But Red managed to avoid it with ease, thanks to Dandy's wise advice.
    Finally, Red reached her Grandma's crevice, where the Calico Scallop was waiting with open shells. They shared tales of their recent underwater adventures, while Dandy the Hermit Crab regaled them with stories of the sea's most fashionable seashells.
    Just as they were enjoying a tasty snack that Grandma had made, Carl arrived, now more determined than ever to have Red for dinner. But Red had one last trick up her shell. She called upon her Grandma's next door neighbour, a speedy Mantis Shrimp named Maggie, who swiftly snapped her tiny boxing glove arms into Carls shell and he spun flying underwater into a net of seaweed that Grandma used for straining her special meals.
    With Carl the Coneshell safely ensnared, Red and her friends rolled him out of the crevice and into the open sea, where he could cause no harm.
    The underwater friends celebrated their victory, and Red, Grandma, Dandy, and Maggie continued on with their lunch, knowing that the sea was a safer place thanks to their wit and bravery.And so, in the deep blue sea, where danger lurked around every coral reef. Red, the little Bonnet shell and her friends proved that even the smallest mollusks could outsmart the biggest bullies and live happily ever after.

    Wow! So I got to FMB on the 2nd but somewhat close to sunset by the time we got to the Diamond head so didn’t do a lot of shelling that night. We got up early and hit the beach and WOW! Shells galore! Stinky shells galore!!! The rack line was insane! I found a true tulip as big as my hand (along with a horse conch and many many other beauties)about as long as a dollar bill it was crazy! It sits very pretty with the three I got from your first auction! So cool! The other difference Sunday morning in comparison to your video is the water clarity. It was like hot coco temperature and color! I saw they had a dredging machines in front on the hotel which I am sure didn’t help the situation but that storm definitely had the gulf all turned up! I can't believe i missed the auction! 😢 I'm behind on watching all my regular channels but i have a great excuse. Personal factoid: i am a huge baseball fan - have been since the 60's. My team...Baltimore Orioles! Watching them for the last 6-8 years has been a painful experience but this year, 2023, has been a joy beyond measure! It's always fun to watch well executed plays but when it's your team making those plays and you've watched the players work hard to hone absolutely amazing skills...and there are no "bought" stars but home grown from our farm teams...yada yada yada. Enough of that; but the O's are the reason my attention has been elsewhere. On break right now while waiting for other teams to win AL West & Central so we know who we have to beat for the AL Championship 🤞 then onto the World Series.
    But again, my apologies for missing the auction! I hope it was successful.
    Your post hurricane beachcomb was exciting! The true tulip was an amazing find and all those live bivalves will feed alot of hungry birds or grow into bigger shells. Correct me if i am wrong but it seems like it has been quite some time since you have found so many gorgeous olives in one trip.
    Have a great week! Stay well. See you next week. ❤❤❤❤

    Hi! September 2 was a glorious day for shelling on FMB! I arrived around 8:30am but I wasn't as far south as you seemed to be. I was super surprised that I encountered only one other beach walker in the 2+ hours I searched for treasures. I found some lovely pear whelks, some shiny lettered olives, a couple of small horse conchs, so many juvenile fighting conchs, a handful of moon snails, lacy lacy murex, a few hinged spiny jewel boxes, nutmegs of all sizes and, my favorite, the most perfect little gaudy nautica. WHAT A MORNING! What I didn't find was a fabulous tulip like yours 😀, but it was a spectacular beach trip anyway. I was fortunate to be in SW Florida for 2 1/2 weeks and each beach outing to FMB and Sanibel was fantastic. I picked up my first alphabet cone on FMB about a week after this trip. Woohoo! I'll be in the area for 10 days beginning on Saturday - hoping for some more fun beach finds. 🙂

One jumped right out on to beat. I quick scooped him up and put him back in the water. Too much longer out of water on hot day would have been the end of him and a meal for a Bird. At 11:45 That Horse conch is in a symbiotic relationship with a living oyster, which gets a free lift while filter feeding.
    I noticed.Perry originally described it as Pyrula hunteria in his publication from 1811, which can be downloaded from the BHL.
    Perry named it 'hunteria'' in honour of the Governor of New Holland, where the species was allegedly imported from back in the day.
    The name 'hunteria' does not relate to the carnivorous nature of the species.

    Good evening, my Beach Angel! Good to see you after your hiatus! It's been a long day. Yes, it's always safe to think that any day is amazing, until life smacks you to remind you that you might be wrong!
    So, by all means, let's all go to the beach!
    Paper figs are a good sign that the shells you seek will be unbroken. Cute little urchin and the itty bitty tulip is so much alive, begging to be put back in the water. That big olive is a nice way to start the search, as is the little one.
    Big, beautiful nutmeg! Great sunray venuses, too! Horse conch!
    That makes me laugh, as when we were kids and playing in the pool when a big horse fly zoomed around, ready to bite our unprotected bodies, the cry of "horse fly" would send us all underwater, each trying to hold our breath longer than our fellows, to avoid being stung!
    I like the colorful moon snails. They look like the marriage of a lettered olive and a moon snail!
    Gosh, I can remember when there were no buildings on this beach, when there was nobody on the beach, either, and the shells litterally covered the beach in piles and drifts.
    Wow, that's a huge true tulip! Good find, love! Big old alphabet cone, too!
    This mermaid blesses you, Beach Angel, for all your kindness to the sea's creatures! You are so kind to all us dwellers of the deep!
    Oh, someone stepped on that baby's ear! And your consolation prize was a sea star to save!
    It's so nice and peaceful to see you enjoying your day, Sharmon!
    That's a lovely slipper snail! Oh, the beautiful jewel box! That would sure hurt you if you stepped on it!
    It's sure your day to find those horse conchs!
    Im so glad you saved some of this lively day for next week! We know what to look for!
    Much you to all you beach-minded folks from
    Rebecca, The Lost Mermaid!

      Looking for something and finding it over and over is such a joy for me. Even when I pick up the same type of shell, there is always something that makes it unique that I like to admire. I am starting to get comfortable with the fact that there always, and I do mean always, will be seashells on our beaches down here. I recently went shelling and I stopped picking up the cinctura hunteria (good practice for me) shells! It will be interesting to see how else my shelling changes over time. 🐚🐚🐚

    Ok. I'm at the albino PC and have to tell you that I finally went back to HISP last Saturday and found 6 - yes - 6 pairs of big albino PC's on the BAY side of the middle of the island! The tide was low and I'm guessing they ended up coming over at high tide after Idalia and got trapped over there and died. It's still pretty challenging to get up the beach unless the tide's low, but the mosquito situation has improved... Awesome true tulip!! Yes, the smell of dead mollusks is pretty bad. We had that here... Man you did find a bunch of spiky live jewel boxes. That last albino PC was about the size of the ones I found. Oh good - a part 2! Did I miss the results of your auction? xxoo

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think I'm going to hit HISP this week. Husband's birthday and he wants to go north so...
      I didn't send all the auction items out yet! I have 3 people who haven't paid so I'm going to give them a few more days, another reminder and I'm going to remove their bid and see if the next person would like the item. Then I have to do all the accounting on everything and get that check out! I will do a "wrap up" video once I completely finish everything.

    I was laughing about your ungodly smell comment. When I was dating my husband I found a beautiful deer cowry on a dive. I was sure it was empty so I wanted to keep the shell. I put it in my husbands SUV and forgot to take it out. He picked me up for work a day later. His truck reeked. He told me a tiny hermit crab was in the shell and had died. Super big stink for such a tiny critter.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's unbelievable the stink that can come from dead sea critters! After Hurricane Ian the beach literally stunk in certain areas. You'd smell "that smell" and start looking for the big dead creature. If I can convince just one person to not take live critters I've done my job! 😃

  • @ztag1p
    @ztag1p 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don’t know which is better; getting my SWF “fix” once a week or being so busy that I have to binge watch a few episodes, haha. Love it, as always. In looking at a map of FMB, do you mean you were way down at the end of Estero Blvd where the beach juts out a little bit where Big Carlos Pass opens into the gulf? My husband and I explored different parts of FMB last year, but didn’t get that far south. And red tide was a bit of a bummer. Putting the many Florida Fighting Conchs back into the water after the tide had turned to go out was done with some trepidation. Were we doing the critters a favor or just prolonging their death? We put them in the water, anyway, unsure of what else to do.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First, I KNOW about red tide and putting the critters back in the water. Oh it's just awful. I hope this summer we can avoid any of that mess. And yes, I start my walks all the way at the south end of the island near the bridge at Big Carlos Pass. Someone that lives in the condos down there watches my videos and has given me a parking pass. 😃

      The critters are attached to their shells with a muscle, and that muscle can rip away from the shell or get damaged if the snails are thrown, so I gently place the critters back in the water. They can tolerate some tumbling but I think a hard slam into the water could hurt them.
