    GM put a massive amount of research , testing, and development into this carburetor!!! It’s biggest enemy was people tinkering with it. The fuel injection system they had back in the 50’s and 60’s fell to the same ignorance.

    When a quadrajet is perfect, its unbeatable. Much more precise fuel metering than Holleys. They are more complicated but are phenomenal carbs if you understand them.

    Ford bought QJets from GM in 1970 for their 429CJ. Thats right, QJets as OEM on Fords biggest motor. Ha!

    • @theone5716
      @theone5716 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, the 429 SCJ isn't Ford's biggest motor, since they also had the 460 and 462 V8s. Also the reason why they bought Quadrajets from GM is that 1. Ford didn't have their own spreadbore carb until 1973 and 2. The Quadrajet was the only way to get 750-800 CFM without making the motor too radical and "unstreetable".

    Someone spent some time setting up this Rochester in the video, engines with a properly tuned Q-Jet have their own sound, well done!
    When I raced stock cars back in the 70's I actually had guys at one track protest my Quadrajet so to shut them up I put on a Holley spread bore and still went like hell but without that big punch the Rochester had.
    The difference between the Rochester vs the Holley power delivery wise made me have to make some pretty big changes to the chassis setup, some people can be so one dimensional. After I changed the carburetor they protested my shocks, there was no "shock rule" other than they had to be NOT coil over type, those protests were over my having 2 or 3 shocks per wheel but they were standard Monroe or Gabriel pickup truck shocks, at the time they cost about $15 each, tie rod mount type racing shocks were $60 or 80 each at the time, what the heck huh??

    The small fuel bowls, and the fact that each q-jet was specifically tuned for the specific engine/vehicle combination (which meant they often didn’t work as desired when swapped from 1 engine to another) many many people suffered bogs, stumbles, and with marginal fuel pump and a small float bowl, many performance cars couldn’t get away from fuel starvation issues. And the Quadra bog nickname stuck.
