    The Quadrajet is the closest you will come to fuel injection results without actually going to fuel injection. You can control and tune every aspect and range you need with these carburetors.
    One thing I am surprised they never addressed was the throttle shaft wear. The base plates should have had bronze bushings installed from the factory.

      The choke has a safety deal in the linkage. If the choke or that linkage thing has an issue it will prevent the back barrels from kicking in.

    Q-jets are great carbs! I would grab every one off the big block caddy’s in the junk yard and build them for my small blocks. If you kept your foot out of it they would get great mileage but when you stomp on them they made the best throaty sound when the toilet bowl secondaries opened up. And I was familiar with all the tricks they talked about in the video.

    Been building Q-jets for a while & You guys did a fair job but missed a few critical items. First off the Q-jet is a fairly complex carb w/real good metering aspects, the small primary bores will give your engine good throttle response at low speeds. After using one a square bore will feel mushy at low speed by comparison. Spread bore unlike any other? What about the Carter thermo quad? To remove the screws holding the throttle butterflies in place better grind off the part of the screw that extends beyond the throttle shaft or you will likely break the head off the screw & will have hell removing what's left of the screw. The end of the screw is staked at the factory to prevent them from backing out. I use a Dremel grinder w/ a small carbide burr to do the job. Screws for the bottom plug, 7/16" NF tap will work better. I have a length of 7/16" aluminum rod threaded to use for plugs. Base needs to be resurfaced on a large belt sander, they can be really warped. Same w/ the main body. The most common mistake owners make when they have a problem is to over torque the hold down bolts & warp everything. Easy way to check the main body for warpage is to look at the slots where the secondary divider plate goes. If they are wider at the top than the bottom then the main body is warped. I have a way of straightening this part but it is difficult & the process is too lengthy for discussion here. You neglected to cover the installation of the choke lever onto the choke shaft, a very frustrating process. On the chevy carbs the plug at the back of the fuel inlet is also prone to leak. Most times this can be corrected by driving the plug in tighter (it is a tapered plug) & re-peening the area around the plug. Lot of critical adjustments to make also, especially the choke pull off which controls the rate of opening for the secondary air valves. If not done properly the carb will bog at WOT or the secondary air valves will open too slow causing disappointing performance. You guys did a fair job otherwise.

    • @robertwest3093
      @robertwest3093 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the thick gasket they used under them made it even easier to warp them

    Actually they went to 850 cfm and i love Quadrajets. Used to make a bushing for the center also...worked wonders for tuning. You didn't need to put threaded plugs in it though. File down and then epoxy over the stock plugs and it good to go. Vinyl interior wasn't exactly "luxury" LOL and neither was the abhorrently bad fuel mileage

    If one uses a 72 jet & a 49 primary metering rod with a lite power piston spring over 20 miles a gallon can be had in the 396 & 402s. The 350 would get 24mph sometimes better with that set up. One would also have to tune the dist advance curve.
    Setting the secondaries for power one could enjoy both worlds mpgs & tons of power.
    The secondaries would take some drilling on some of the orifices & grinding on the metering rods.
    The Q jets were fun to work on to get max MPGs & Max Power.
    There was no other carbs that I built that could do the same.

    • @ashqelon7267
      @ashqelon7267 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That combination would render a total of 0.00218576’ which is way lean for a big CI engine like that. I’de look to experiment and look at the plugs-monitoring the temps also as that seems too lean which might create excess heat issue on top of the lean fuel ratio it would introduce.
      The engineered spec chart call for at least a 0.0025000’ total fuel ratio mix for proper emulsification for proper 14.7:1 ratio for an efficient combustion.

    Something I only recently found out is that when mercruiser marine first started using Chevy engines in the mid 80s they had their own version of a q- jet. It looks the same but it's already been modified for performance with bigger jets and passages. Marine application means no restrictions for emissions or power. They are also made up of a different kind of aluminum alloy that will not oxidize at all. My boat has a 307 out of a 73 Chevelle. I put the cam and lifters and the heads from a 300 horsepower 350 mercruiser that was sunken in salt water for a week. Then brought out of the water and sat on the shore for 5 years without being drained. The block was destroyed by freezing but the carburetor survived except for the little springs inside. That tiny little spring on the low speed metering rods was completely dissolved from the salt water and being left for 5 years. The inside of the carb just needed a can of brake clean with a straw and it looked like new. The exterior is already covered in black powder coat from the factory. All mercruiser carburetors have an aluminum tag with a part number to make it easier to get the right kit. Mine is from a 1985 four winns 25 foot cuddy. I had to scrap an old carb just for the tiny springs and I had to drill out the port and install a tube for the vacuum advance . Marine carburetors don't have any vacuum ports at all. If you need to hook up a brake booster you will also need to either drill and tap the port for the vacuum or even use a throttle plate from another carburetor that is the same. Just the fact that there is absolutely no corrosion anywhere inside or outside just blew my mind. It spent a week sunk at the dock and then 5 years on shore without being drained... Try that with an automotive carb !!!

    Back in the day, my buddy was dating this girl whose father owned a shop.
    He had a fast gto but couldn't drive so well.
    So it's time to rebuild the carb, and he gave it to her dad.
    He rebuilt it , did a nice job too.
    Then he pushed the little lever down so the secondaries wouldn't open.
    A fathers gotta do what a fathers gotta do.
    My buddy never found out or even realized that he had less power 🤣🤣

      lack of maintenance on anything will cause poor results. preventative or routine. these carbs have stood the test of time unlike the many of the cheap off the shelf ones that people replace them with. and get thrown out long before the 30 year period some of these have been in service.

    Why would anybody criticize the quadrajet? It is without a doubt the best factory 4 barrel ever made. They rarely have any problems, and if they do, they're easy to fix and tune. I can rebuild them in my sleep... No need to drill and tap the plugs on the bottom. Just rough up the casting, and put your epoxy on. Most kits also have a sponge rubber seal to put in the baseplate to help with this problem.

      Kenny,
      I agree about the well plugs, I had one on my 76 caddy and even the small plugs were leaking. I found that by filling the fuel bowl with fuel and let it set over night the next morning I seen where it was leaking , and sealed them and the big well plugs with J.B. weld and worked great .

    • @larryhutchens7593
      @larryhutchens7593 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those sponge seals rarely work for very long. Using epoxy alone will work for a while but the fuel will eventually attack it, especially the witches brew of fuel that is currently available & I'm not just talking about alcohol. The threaded plug idea is best since the fuel can attack the epoxy only at the end of the thread, takes quite a while to work its way through all the thread & cause a leak.

      @@larryhutchens7593 I personally use a two part panel adhesive used for bonding body panels. It takes overnight to set up, but nothing will compromise that stuff. I've used it to glue windows back into the regulator tracks on old cars, and even glued a bumper bracket on a '56 Chevy that a customer had chromed without knowing the bracket was missing. I jacked the car up with his bumper jack the next day to show him it's strength.

    Edelbrock performer carbs are best for the street. Easiest to tune and they stay performing great for years to come. A well experienced holley tuner may squeeze a few more hp from a holley but good luck getting it to stay that way. I've had a performer rpm matched top end set on our 64 Malibu. The original 283 is in storage. It has a 350 4 bolt main high hp version with powerglide twenty years ago I took the double pumper and torker 2 combo off it. The edelbrock stuff has been performing flawless all these years. Use stabilizer when you're not gonna drive your stuff. It saves alot of headaches.

    I had an old ponitac that was in dry storage for 12 years - put up on jack stands. 400 engine with Q-jet and a 400 trans. Gas tank was emptied and the radiator/engine block drained. After 12 years i rolled it out into the sunlight, topped off fluids, and installed a battery. I primed the fuel bowl with gas, turbed the key and guess what happened.....nothing. I had to file the points. After filing and the points the engine fired and ran on choke like it was just parked yesterday. When it got warm i bumped the throttle and it came down to idle. I drove it to the gas station to top-off the tank. That was 5 years ago and it still runs great. Even the accelerator pump works fine. I haven't made a single adjustment on the carburetor. I never understood the hate surrounding Q-jets. They are a great carb if you know how to work on them.

    good video on basic rebuild but there are a few easy mods that should be done to improve performance like sealing the secondary needles with electrical tape and re-locating the secondary linkage to get rid of the full throttle bog when the secondaries open. learned this from an article in Hot Rod magazine 35 yrs ago.

    Q-Jets are great carbs. Had a '72 C-10 Chev Step Side short bed bought in '85. Gone nearly 30 years later in '12. Still ran and drove.
    Anyways orig carb was acting up. Ordered a new one from a once staple speed shop thats gone now, sadly. This was '87 or so
    Kept the orig and this was rebuilt by a family friend, '94 or so.
    Dash pot failed on the new one '99 or so. Stole the one off the rebuild and warm idling problems were gone,,,,so was the auto choke. Heard 'klink' and knew something was amiss.
    Oh well, i just drove it for fun. Dang i miss that truck. Bit of a hot rod Stock with the 350, Q-Jet and a 3 speed. (old style slot mags and 275/60 R - 15 tires).

    The Quadrajet wasn't the only spread bore carburetor I had a Thermoquad on my 340 Demon that was spread bore. If my memory is correct it was 850 cfm. The power valve if set properly kept bit from bogging from dumping all that fuel into an engine at low RPMs.

    Hello im curious why he said the secondary plates at wide open throttle should be at 90 degrees.
    Can anyone explain?
    My secondaries are at 80 degrees.
    How much play in the throttle plates is too much?
    Im not new to wrenching on old cars but im learning about this type of carb so I can rebuild my first one by myself.
    Like peoplw have mentioned,there are alot parts in these carbs although some of the parts are cheap because there is so many and they also add up and then you got a good amount into the carb but it's still far cheaper then buying one new or a reman.
    I am mechanically inclined so I know I can do it.
    I've known about them for many years since I have owned a few cars with them on there and never really did anything with them other than clean them with carb cleaner and drive lol.
    I know they call them quadrajunk but I think those are ones who just never really learned how to rebuild one right so they can perform at their best.
