Shane warne nailed it.....for us that early 2000s team led by ganguly is the most revered one......we don't remember the stats but we do remember how they played as team, how they defeated mighty Oz ,started winning overseas. ..dravid laxman sachin kumble bhajji

Great comments from Warne here. With Athers you remember him surviving that spell from Allan Donald, or that dogged hundred against South Africa that saved the game for England. With Nass you remember the team he helped build that took us from the dark days of the 90s, to the foundation that gave England the platform to win the Ashes in 2005. Win/Loss is part and parcel of the game, but it's what that player did that you remember the most.
Actually Atherton was one of the most hopeless captains England ever had. That whole period was terrible.

All sorts of things were going around at the time for eg. Players were contacted to their counties rather than ECB
@@sirlordhenrymortimer6620 he couldn't help the bad players he was given. He wasn't great himself... But his captaincy, was as dour and unimaginative as his batting. He also failed to get the best out of some very talented cricketers. I'm sure you can think of at least a couple.
And I would put Michael Vaughan even higher he assembled the team in mid 00's which go on to no 1 ranking in test cricket in 2011.

Became captain in the 90's, which was particularly bleak period for English cricket, botham,Gooch,Gower retired. Along with no central contract made things extremely difficult for england cricket team .
Athers was one of the few better players of England side of the 90's who has redeemed themselves

Not really-nobody could honestly say Waugh was a better captain than Taylor tactically, or as a man manager. Waugh also had the advantage of a 90 mph bowler in Lee for nearly all of his captaincy that Taylor didn't & the peak of Ponting while he was still learning under Taylor, along with the peak of Gillespie & a keeper who averaged 50 odd at 7. I think Waugh gets a raw deal-especially from Warne & Chappelli-he was better & more attacking than they give him credit for & he was better than Ponting, but not in Taylor's league.

Meh, it's the current drinking game. Take a drink every time Warne directly or indirectly disses Waugh. Realistically though would you expect a narcissist like Warne to respect the captain who rightfully (at the time) dropped him for one test.
@James - I guess Warnie is right in doing so because I have heard both Mc Grath and Shane say that they were captains of their own bowling. Since they contributed most games, it shows how the S.Waugh and Ricky had easier jobs than Taylor who was forming this team

I completely agree with Warne. If you talk about India then MS Dhoni & Virat Kohli have better stats as captain but if you ask anyone who has followed Indian cricket in the last 3 decades, he will tell you that Sourav Ganguly was the captain who had the biggest impact on Indian cricket.
I started watching cricket in 2001. That's why unaware of that impact ganguly brought. I feel dhoni brought a professional touch to the team which approached the game emotionally before 2007. Dhoni also turned the team into a fielding unit. And kohli played a big role in developing a fast bowling army. He was also successful in transmitting his fitness culture to the whole team.
@@koko_koshy When Ganguly got the captaincy, India were ranked 8th in Test cricket only ahead of Zimbabwe. The fans had lost faith after the match fixing episode. He had to build the team from scratch. Under him we reached the 2nd spot in Tests only behind Australia (which in my opinion was the best team ever to have played Test cricket).
Dhoni inherited a very strong team. Having said that Dhoni was an outstanding ODI captain (probably the best ever India has had) but he was not a good Test captain.
I completely agree with you on the fact that Virat has had a major role in the improvement in fitness levels of our players especially our fast bowlers. But we are still not winning Test series overseas on a consistent basis which we should with such a lethal pace battery. Also let us accept the fact that quality of the opposition is not the same. Teams like Sri Lanka and the West Indies have gone down over the years and India has had some easy victories against them.
Having said that I wish Virat all the best for the upcoming Test series in Australia. With Smith and Warner back, add Labuschagne into the mix as well, this time it is not going to be easy. I pray that none of the players get injured during the IPL and we will witness a great contest against the Aussies. I can't wait for December. Anyways we all want 2020 to end as soon as possible.
@@ArkoRay what you want see in test matches, your team wins sessions and give competition with bats or ball to the opposition. And we are winning sessions in overseas conditions whether its in SA or in England. Indian team were known as a heavily batting dependent in the past but now, you can see our players are giving tough competition to the opponents, but in the past its all about our batting. So, i think its the brand of cricket you played is important. Winning or losing is part and parcel of the game but what type of attitude and passion your team have is important and we have seen this passion in all three captains. Its shouldn't be like this you are just going to participate just for the sake of tour decided by your board, giving tough competition to the opposition on their home soil should matters the most. No hard feeling for you bro but i think you just miss this point. Comparison between Ganguly, Dhoni or Virat is not right. All of them have given what was needed at that period of time.
Unpopular Opinion, however I really don’t see Kohli as a fundamentally great captain. Yes, his off-field influence has to be significant, he’s transformed the mentality of Indian cricket, producing better pace bowlers than they are spinners for the first time maybe ever, however on the field, especially away from home, I do think he leaves a lot to be desired. Let’s his emotions run over him, very individualistic and it can’t always necessarily come off

To win Test matches you need to take 20 wickets consistently. With the kind of fast bowling India has now, we should be winning more and not just competing.
Earlier, in the 2000s, we used to compete with Australia, England and South Africa in their backyard and maybe draw a series but didn't win that much because we didn't have fast bowlers back then who could pick 20 wickets. But today you can't give that excuse. This is the best fast bowling unit India has ever had. If we can't win now then we will never win.
I will give you a comparison.
From 2001-2010, India lost just 1 Test in England.
From 2011-2020 we have lost 11 Tests in England (7 under Dhoni and 4 under Kohli).
Indian players earn 5 times the money that players from other countries earn. They have all the facilities available. After having so much resources at your disposal if you are still happy with your team going overseas just to give tough competition and not expect them to win then I feel sorry.

Stephen Fleming was the best captain. He was tactically strong and had full support from team.If you have strong individual contributors like McGrath,Warne, olden times Holding,Marshall, Garner,Roberts ,Sir Viv Richards captaining is different skill.

I agree with Shane because him and Mcgrath 'captained' their side every time they were bowling. Which is why both of them never rate Ricky or S.Waugh as better captains than say a M.Taylor or Allan. Because Allan and Taylor were still building a team

I would say that a captain can’t solely be judged on results alone. You are only as good as the players in your team.
Stephen Fleming for example was a better captain that for example Ponting, but his record wasn’t as good because he didn’t have the best team.
Ultimately it’s a results game and if a captain isn’t winning he will get the boot, but his record will not necessarily reflect how good of a captain he was/is

These 3 are my all time fav commentators.
If you consider that most captains come to the position by, first being good enough to earn a players berth in the team, then second, having qualities enough to be considered for the role after a period of staying in the team; then perhaps to identify the X factor you could look at captains who we think are successful in their role, but perhaps are not contributing otherwise to the performance as a player. If Brearly is in the top 5 English captains, but was commonly felt to not be a great player first and foremost at test level, then what were the qualities he had that we could look for in individuals who are also more gifted as players?

Say you were England captain walking down the road ... people wont recognize you for your Win/Loss ratio but the way you and your team played and left a mark on the game ...In that sense, being a Pakistani ... Imran as captain and his cornered tigers of 1992 as a team will always hold a special place in our hearts.

It always reaches bck to results .at the end of the day ..but i think sum captains don't have to do much bcoz the of the mental nd skills of there players they have to call pon ....so no we can't really judge a captain on jus results bcoz eg ..west Indies they could of do wid Raul opening nd pujara...

Root’s greatest act as a captain has been on Stokes. He could’ve turned out self-absorbed like Pietersen. Instead he pulls for the team. Invaluable.

But when he had that brawl and stuff, it was starting to look like another KP and that we didnt need. You can tell they (ECB) learnt how to deal with players starting to go off the rails, they reigned him back in and now look what we have. A leader in the dressing room, a role model for young cricketers and the one of the best players in the world.

This is a superb video that all aspiring captains should watch regardless of the sport you play.
In all honesty, Joe Root frequently lets test matches drift during key moments, has sacrificed his undoubtedly brilliant batting as captain, thus meaning that the other weaker batsmen (besides Stokes and Pope) are liable to collapses. He relies way too much on his bowlers. People go on about the win in South Africa but England lost in the Caribbean and he has yet to win an ashes series home and away. A lot of the series he has captained, England did not deserve to win, most notably the series against India in 2018 where India were the better side but somehow lost 3-1.
I think this is where he lacks behind Williamson and kohli. They are great captains and step up. Williamson especially. Joe root is still an amazing batsman in ODIs with average of above 50 and a strike rate of close to 90. He was one of the best test batsmen in like 2016-2017 but not anymore. I do not believe he is captainship material however an exceptional batsman. I think Ben Stokes would be a better captain in the long run. Joe root should, in my humble opinion, work hard on his batting and allow himself to score as many runs as he can.

If you are going to compare the win percentage of captain then you must compare their opponents and how the teams have weakened or became stronger like the Australian team now is not the team which it used to be when Ponting was captain

@goozoo49 Note that inspite of loosing in the Ashes, Ponting has the highest win/loss ratio among all other test captains, you just cannot merely judge him based on Ashes. What about all the other series that Australia won under his captaincy?

I watched Warnie captain Hampshire in a county championship match against Yorkshire. He was brilliant. I found myself thinking "Why has he put a fielder there?" when Mascerenas was bowling. Two balls later said fielder took a catch. And late in the day as young Billy Taylor walked slowly back to bowl another over, Warne's voice from slip "Come on Billy Taylor, don't be satisfied!"
The best Captain ever to play the game, was and always will be IMO is the Great Imran Khan. Because he lead a young inexperienced team with a fragile domestic cricket structure. He motivated bunch of individuals to play for the team and winning the World Cup 92’

True fact - Do you folks know WHY this discussion about captaincy took place?
It is because I criticized Mike Atherton's captaincy on Twitter and Athers blocked me for it. I am not joking.
On my Twitter timeline, around last year...someone had posted a pic of Graeme Hick's infamous knock of 98* (infamous because Athers had declared and denied him a hundred. Hick was really upset by the proceedings).
Anyway...for that pic, someone said that Athers had given Hick enough time to get to a hundred...so declaring the innings when he was on 98 was not exactly unfair (after all, one has to think about the team). I replied - "If Athers really wanted to think of the team, why did he wait till Hick reached 98 to go for the declaration? He should have declared much sooner...if it really was about the team. At least Hick would not have been hurt so much."
Basically, I thought it was hypocritical of Athers to think that Hick was batting slowly considering Athers was *never* a fast scorer himself in the first place.
Remember, England wanted to win that test match in Karachi in 2001? Nasser Hussain has explicitly said in his autobiography that he suggested to Athers to make way for Alec Stewart to open the batting in that innings just so that England could get the runs quickly. Meaning even the England team did not have so much faith in Athers' ability to score runs quickly.
So...on what grounds did Athers think that Hick batted too slowly to deny him a hundred?🤷🤷🤷
This is basically what I said about Athers and his captaincy (and I tagged him as well). Mind you, I wasn't rude or abusive or anything...and I certainly did NOT get personal with Athers. I only expressed an honest opinion. And Athers blocked me for it.
I subsequently tweeted to Nasser about this...Nasser didn't block me or anything (he seems a much more decent guy). But it seems like this discussion about captaincy is more like a scripted defence of Athers putting itself across as a discussion about captaincy (if you listen to the whole podcast on Spotify, you will find that Nasser pointedly defends Athers as a captain on more than a few occasions during this discussion).

I’d have to disagree a bit with what their saying here, I think a captain should be judged on their attitude, persona and the culture they bring to the team, a great example is Kane Williamson of New Zealand, his positive attitude and admirable spirit made him and the New Zealand cricket team adorned by the world, even though they lost the WC. Results matter but so does the culture a captain brings to a team

Captains should not be totally judged by the result. It also depends on how you carry your squad giving them full confidence . It also depends on how one communicates with the team to get the best out of individuals.

Problem is people don’t judge Root on his win ratio. Just because he gets a few things wrong doesn’t mean he is a bad captain? Remember Ponting bowling first? And you wouldn’t say he was a bad captain & that decision probably cost Australia the ashes in 2005! For me it looks like Root needs Stokes & Stokes needs Root, when they aren’t together it just looks a little dysfunctional.

Joe Root is a fine captain, it’s just, much like Michael Vaughan and Alistair Cook before him, his own individual form has fell since assuming it. His win percentage is the best of any Englishman to captain more than 30 tests

Nasser Hussain if I have great players in my team i don't need anything to do as captain...Tendulkar, sehwag, lazman, dravid, ganguly, that's just batting list
