To be honest, I really preferred a Man who has a Cricket Brain over a Man who has experience of the MD role.
And I think they did a pretty good job of choosing Rob Key as the Managing Director of English Cricket.
His confidence in his views and opinions makes me believe he isn't bothered by the outside noise and it's just another job in the world.
My best wishes to him and Co. in taking English Cricket forward.

He's a good lad Key. I went to uni in Canterbury and used to see him around the town, had a chat with him once and he was approachable and happy to talk to a total stranger about cricket.
He said some insightful stuff during his stint at Sky and I hope he stays true to that. Let's be honest the ECB is stuffy, full of suits and resistant to change. If Rob gets his way, this could be a great period for English cricket.

Rob Key's appointment is the best things to have happened to English cricket since Morgan was made white ball captain. Cricket nerds have gotten to know him very well by listening to him on Sky sports over the years, and its obvious he is deeply knowledgable, patriotic and capable. Im also really reassured that Key will also always have the confidential advice from Atherton and Hussein to help him, and they will always tell him their truth, without having to sugar coat it or be sycophantic.
Keys only challenge is to stay who he is, and not get seduced by the power and become a tyrant. So long as he can be the very best version of himself, English cricket all quickly improve under his leadership.
Good luck Rob, and please make yourself free for these types of in depth interviews so we can know what you are thinking.

Although some of what you said is true, Rob Key has nowhere the cricket knowledge at test level as Andrew Strauss, who captained England for so many years and took the team to number 1.
It’s a strongish appointment and much better than Giles, but it won’t make England number 1 again. England need the best coach, if they could get someone like Ponting that could really change things.
Rob Key has good county knowledge, maybe bring better players through. Overall they lack the player depth, like South Africa and need better batsmen. Australia always seem to have the next best fast bowler and even odd batsman.

Key's patriotism is a virtue? Really? Only England could appoint a captain (Morgan) that said he would never sing the national anthem under any circumstances. How's that for patriotism? Gee, listening back to this interview now, Key really did hit the nail on the head. Talking about - not worried as much about wins and losses, its more the brand of cricket we play - and - we have to win over the young generation and not just expect people to fall in love with the game - . He picked stokes and mccullum. All three of them share the same mindset and its inspiring to see how a clear vision, honest leadership and buy in from the players and now the country can transform a team of underacheivers into the most exciting and maybe the most revolutionary team in my memory. Its an amazing feat to win a test match, but the way these lot win games by committing all in on unprecedented plans and pull them off make their wins more extraordinary than others. Its one thing to play aggressive in a 20/20 or and ODI, but to keep to this incredible attacking plan over 5 days with all the ebbs and flows of a test match requires untold faith in one another and real strength of character. Win or lose, long may it continue.

A very good interview that many a politician could learn from for his honesty. I hope that Brendan McCullum is a success, an inspired appointment. Slightly more controversially I don't think either Anderson or Broad should be playing test cricket. Not that they don't deserve their places but they should have been bowled into the ground. We would have won more tests if they had bowled until they got injured or knackered. Resting bowlers has been the most flawed policy of recent times. Yes leave a bowler out if the conditions don't suit, but in the main keep them bowling. I would rather have seen Jimmy playing the same number of tests but retiring at 35 than extending his career by 'resting' him. You can't say that Woods, Archer and Stone have been over bowled. If quick bowlers spent more time in the nets and out in the middle rather than lifting weights in the gym I don't think they would brake down as often as my Dad's old Austin Metro.
Forgive me, I'm on a roll here. As for white ball cricket. Give the coach's job to Collingwood for 12 months and then offer the job to Morgan when he retires. And ask him to keep his kit in the car.

    Great interview
Strauss's choice I know raised a few eye brows but boy has Rob Key been an inspired appointment you can tell his love and passion for the game and he's not afraid to make tough calls or admit if he's wrong
Then he shows what an inspired appointment he was when he appointed Baz and Stokes and wham bam suddenly test cricket is exciting to watch again England are winning but not just winning but winning games before we would of lost or drawn
I think we're entering a golden age of England cricket the acid test will be the ashes this summer bring it on
And Buttler was the obvious choice to replace morgs and already has T20 world Cup under his belt
But even more exciting is the size of the pool of players we now have for both red and white ball cricket

An an Aussie fan I want a strong English system to ensure test cricket survives. We cant afford another West Indies or one sided test results. As much as I love the wins id prefer to take some losses to ensure I get to watch test cricket in my nursing home in 40 yrs. Key is the man for the job. He understands the game in its current form, has the contacts that he can go to for guidance, the interests of england cricket at heart and is prepared to stamp his mark on the game. Coaching is the biggest problem. In my opinion they need Langer. I understand having two firebrands of Langer and Stokes might be too much but I think Stokes unlike Paine will stand for his players when needed but will appreciate the hard work to turn this all around. I also think some guys Root include need his mentality

@@ianbetts4266 to me this comes across as trying to gatekeep who’s a real cricket fan and who isn’t. Of course people can like whatever they like, but lots of peoples lifestyles make watching and following test cricket really difficult. A T20 match is much more comparable to other popular sports in terms of length. The players have adapted to develop totally divergent skill sets, while test cricket may still be the ultimate test of concentration, patience, endurance, reading the match situation etc. But take that test player and ask them to hit 18 runs off the last over of a t20 and not many of them will be able to do it because a totally different set of attributes are required for that high pressure situation. Same with the bowling

Surprising to hear positive comments about pitches. At Chelmsford, every game has been a draw, with not even three innings completed. Some days only 2 or 3 wickets fell ALL DAY. Even after batting collapses it has still been a draw. There has to be more in it for bowlers or it's simply not a fair competition. It's hard to sustain interest when only one outcome seems likely from day 1, however good individual performances may be.

For Test cricket to do well, English Test cricket needs to get better. And I hope the appointment of Brendon brings in that fresh air and energy (may be after the India series :)). I have always loved Rob Key's commentary and opinions, and the entire Sky team to be honest including Ath and Nasser ( and Isa too ). Followed it extensively through the Ashes. Stepping into an administration set up will be difficult but he seems to be the kind of person who is direct, honest and constantly thinks about what is good for English cricket.
