      @Truck Stop I've done Imogene as well, and there were parts that I wouldn't take my f250 crew cab long bed which was 22ft. long. Turns would be too tight. Also some areas at the beginning of the pass recently washed out so I'd be leery of the stability off camber with that high of a COG. We did it in my 16 Rubicon on 35's and it was nerve racking in spots.

    I went over Imogene Pass in late July of 1968 in Dodge Power Wagon!! As this author kept saying how rugged it was, isn't the half of it!! It took us three-days. It was the most terrifying thing I have ever done in my life!! I broke out in a "Cold Sweat" just watching this video. I wasn't driving. I went with a mining engineer from El Paso.

    As a Colorado boy, I will go ahead and say that Imogene is one of our hidden gems. The road does get pretty narrow, but I don't think it's nearly as sketchy as the decent into Telluride on Black Bear. I was actually Up in Ouray/Silverton area a few weeks ago and neither pass was open all the way through, But i did find a campsite abover Silverton right at timberline with one of the best views I've ever seen from a tent.

Brother I want to do all the things you do but just don't have the funds to do then , I've always since I was a child wanted to live in Montana's mountains. But in my younger years I got mixed up with the wrong crowd and drugs and jails and watched my dreams pass away before I even noticed until it was to late. I wanted to be like Grisly Adams lol. • @JerryWDaviscom
      @JerryWDaviscom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gregory Rizer - you can do it. You CAN do it. You have to get some cash flow, live as cheaply as humanly possible and spend your money on equipment. Boots, a good backpack, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cooking equipment - go to an REI store and tell them what you plan to do and they will help you a lot. You need a vehicle, and that will cost the most, but a GOOD used Toyota 4Runner is the king of the road. A 4WD 4Runner is, too, but 4WD is rarely used. I have had three 4WD vehicles (2SUV and one F150) and 4WD is rarely used. Good TIRES, good transmission, engine and cooling system - very important. You can relocate to the area you want to live in after you get your equipment together. Then, you can get some kind of job that provides cheap rent money, and do your exploring when you are off. Personally, I would rather backpack and explore than work, but we still have to have cash so some kind of work that brings in money is "necessary equipment". I encourage you to do this. It will give you a new life and remake you. You can talk to God on the trial like you have never talked to Him before. Get your equipment together and go find Him out there. He wants to have a good conversation with you :)

    I’ve done this pass with a friend and horses. Spent ten days on the trail. You did a wonderful job video taping this but do it by horse with some climbing gear, there are some places that you find old trails, homesteads that have not been touched for a hundred years. Places where you can stay for days and be utterly alone except for wildlife. Again, I want to say great job, even in a truck you must be white knuckling that steering wheel on some of the trail. Thanks.

    I did it in 1989 while attending Fort Lewis College in Durango Colorado. We slept on the peak for a night. It got so cold. This was in May. It is so beautiful up there. The air was so fresh. At night you could hear the wolves nearby. No signs of bears. Probably one of the most beautiful places on earth other than the top of Half-Dome in Yosemite.

      I perked up at your comments ( I live in Canada so its a drive to get down there ) as I went on a driving/camping trip in 2007 in July to explore some of the four wheel drive trails I thought I could dare do in my extended cab half ton chevy which is certainly not the hot setup for trails and got a lot of looks and comments of amazement .. way too big, horrible turning radius etc but just added to the challenge and yes I did do Imogene. But also on that trip I went down to northern Arizona and over to Death Valley and was that ever hot, then up to the east side of Yosemite and into the park and hiked to the top of Half Dome and that was a challenge for my body to put it mildly. What a spectacular place in Yosemite though but oh so crazy busy.

    I drove the Ouray to Telluride trip in 2017, in a brand new rental Rubicon with 31 in tires. Spent the night in Telluride .Took the gondola trip that evening. Then back to Ouray the next day. Weather Was spectacular .Trail was technical, and challenging. Slow wins the race on this trip . Zero damage and four good tires when returned. 👍🏻 Impressive vehicle for off roading!! --- Talked to a guy jogging the trail. Once a year he runs over the pass, spends the night, and runs back the next day !!! You are at serious altitude people!!! Super nice guy , but had to be a Cyborg . He RAN past me in the Jeep approaching the top of the pass !!! --

    Ouray, my home for 15 years many years ago. My neighbor and I would telemark ski Imogene every spring starting on Red Mt Pass, up and across the ridge then down Imogene. It was always a blast. One year we looked down at our skis and discovered we were standing on top of a Jeep Wrangler. Later we got the scoop on it. The owner wanted to make one last trek over to Telluride that fall but, unfortunately, that was the day and the hour the winter snows rolled in. He got to walk out in an early season blizzard. He recovered his Jeep later in the spring. That same year and in the same area the bulldozer that clears the road in the spring slid sideways down the mountain but, fortunately, the driver was able to jump off before it rolled. Amazingly, he and the dozer were fine. Imogene is fun to jeep and mountain bike.
    Have you done Black Bear? Very Dangerous and one way only. I never had the nerve to jeep it so I did it on a mountain bike. That was a real challenge. Someone had to change a tire on their Jeep near the top and lost control of the spare which rolled and bounced, 50 feet in the air at times, into the town of Telluride. It T-Boned, of all vehicles, a brand new, top-of-the-line Range Rover which exploded into tiny shards. No one was injured thankfully.
    Lots of adventures to be had in the San Juan and Cimmeron Mountains. Check out Owl Creek Pass in the Cimmeron's outside of Ridgway next time you're out here. Very scenic. Take time to hike Wetterhorn Pass. That and Highland Mary Lakes out of Silverton are the two most popular hikes in the area. Both would make spectacular drone footage! Neither is considered to be difficult hiking.
    Great video. Now I want a drone. Thanks!

    Great video. Brought back lots of memories. Moved to Durango in 1972 and spent 30 years there. Did Imogene a number of times, as well as most of the roads between Durango, Telluride and Silverton, but as mentioned by a previous post, Black Bear is the one that brings you to your knees. And you’re right, the rental jeeps that go up have no idea what they’re in for in many cases. Nice job filming it.

You have done a fantastic job capturing the beauty and serenity of the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. This video gave me chills. Kudos brother. I live in Florida and visited this area about thirty years ago, then finally got around to taking my wife out there last summer. We visited Ouray and Telluride via the asphalt highways, but we would have loved to ride along with you on the trail over Imogene Pass.

    @JailBreak Overlander,
    Hello. I’ve been around off roading my entire life and was born and raised in San Diego, CA. My Dad used to take us out off roading in the East County mountains, in the desert between California and Arizona, in various locations in Arizona and Nevada and countless other places all over the State.
    Then when I got my drivers license, I bought my first 4x4 truck in 1990, at just 16 years old. It was a 1980 Datsun 4x4 that had lived a rough life and as a result, I was able to buy it for only $500.00. I then cut my teeth on it, learning how to drive off road as well. My Dad taught me a majority of the knowledge and skills needed. Later on in life I would then own Toyota Tacoma’s and they were even better at off roading.
    We moved to Colorado in 2003, where my wife is from and have been out here ever since. From 2009 through 2019, we unfortunately dealt with a number of pretty severe medical issues and off roading had to take a break.
    In 2020, things finally turned around a little bit and I began planning to get back into off roading again. I once again began looking at Toyota Tacoma’s due to there reliability, durability and my being very familiar with them. However, I had never off roaded in Colorado before and I also wanted a vehicle that in stock form would be the most capable off roading vehicle. I also wanted something with both front and rear lockers as well. After doing a ton of research, on 11-30-2020 I ordered a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. It arrived at my local dealership on 02-12-2021 and I took delivery of it on 03-01-2021. I just ordered a Warn Zeon 12-S winch, a crap ton of KC Hilites off road lights and a couple of Hi Lift vehicle jacks, along with several things for camping and/or surviving off the grid should I decide to camp in many locations I go out exploring, or should I break down and have to wait until help arrives.
    With the Imogene Pass, it looks like a very fun trail to go out exploring on. Since you are familiar with it, as well as Black Bear Pass and countless other Colorado off roading trails, can a stock JLUR do both of those trails without receiving any trail damage? If so, great! With that in mind, are there any trails that you would advice me to not go on with a stock JLUR?
    Thank you!
    Jas

    This brings back memories. My Mom, Dad, Sister and I took Imogene Pass from Ouray to Telluride in August 1973. We had an old 42 Willis Jeep. Our next door neighbors joined us is a separate Jeep. My Mom and Sister had their eyes closed most of the time. One thing I missed though (it may not still exist with the development of Telluride) was the switchback down the mountain into Telluride. The turns were so sharp that large jeeps had to drive down one switchback and back down the next one since they couldn't make the turns.
