when I was a kid we drove that road every week to the camp bird mine to get my dad's paycheck. At that time 1969 you had to contend with the mine trucks who took their piece of the road out of the middle.

I towed our 36’ 5th wheel from Durango to Ouray a couple of summers ago and it was stressful! my husband said it was beautiful but I was too focused to notice LOL. The next summer, I planned our route to go around from ridgeway to telluride and down to Delores. It worked out, we stayed in some amazing places but I was not feeling the drive south on 550 lol. Far more exposure that way, yikes!

Folks, we’re going there in September but if you guys want to see really bum clenching proper mountain passes then have a look at the Swiss and Italian Alps in Europe. TH-cam the Stelvio Pass, Grimsel Pass, and Col de Bonnette to name only a few and there 1000’s miles of mountain passes some single track with sheer drops. You should put it on your bucket list👍

In a month, my wife and I will be riding the Million Dollar Highway, north to south, on my Harley Road Glide. I have to admit, I'd prefer to ride it, at least for the first time, from south to north, but our ride plans don't allow for that. With some healthy uncertainly, I'm looking forward to the ride on the Harley. We'll be leaving the truck and toy hauler in Woodland Park, as we set out for a few days of riding.

I said that I'd rather ride it South to North first, so that I (with my wife on back) would be a little further away from the no-guard-rail drop off in the segment near Ouray. I am looking forward to riding the Million Dollar Highway in a few weeks! We'll also be riding five 10k+ foot passes in one day. It's gonna be a BIG riding week for us!!! 🙂

There is higher a sheer cliff on the other side of the road when you get passed Silverton going to Durango. You have to drive along a sheer cliff in either direction. I grew up nearby here. I think it was easier to drive when I was a teenager because the traffic was much lighter. You have to pay attention to other people driving more now.

Not the scariest roads in the US, but If towing stay alert to the hairpins and blind curves. As long as you have good driving skills and dont get scared of chipmunk crossing in front of you, its all good. One of the state's most epic scenery roads to drive. Take your time, stop at the many view points and historical sites.

    Good morning Clay
What Tandara do u have ?
    We are looking @ a 285RL
IS this a house i could pull with my short bed dsl dodge R2500
    You seen in Harrisburg ?
There saying it half ton towable
I question that wth a 1675 pin weight

    • @OurRoadLessTraveled
      @OurRoadLessTraveled  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

we have that exact 5th wheel. Its a 2022 Tandara 285RL. We started out with a 2018 RAM 2500 diesel, in the tradesman package. Fully loaded with 80 lbs of propane in the bed, full of water, me the wife, dog and generator, we were within 80lbs of payload on the truck. The truck had a 2.42 running gear, SO 6.7 cummins, short bed with the 68RFE trans. We never had a problem pulling it even through the rockies. We ended up getting rid of the truck, because, I did not get it in gear properly, on a hill, and it messed up one of the clutches. Still ran fine but had a massive vibration at 45 loaded, and 55 unloaded. We went dually simply in case we decided to go bigger.

I will say, Fun Town RV has a couple 285RLs that they have knocked down to the high 40's. They are mostly in TX but I think they go up to OK.

On our TH-cam channel it lists our email address. shoot me an email with your cell number and Ill call you. The Tandara 285RL is not a 1/2 ton towable. The 27BH might be, but its even close depending on the truck. I can also get you the number to the guy over the Tandara line at East to West.

    This is my backyard.
    I learned to drive here.
    No joke.
    His advice is spot on...
    EYES ON THE ROAD.
    It's the same game EVERYWHERE.
    "Keep it between the lines."
The truth is, this road IS SERIOUS.
If you run off the road and hit a tree...
    That's bad enough.
But a mistake of 4' here can mean DISASTER.
    Treat this road with REVERENCE.
It's one of the most BEAUTIFUL things in the world...
    But treat it with respect.
    Locals tip....
Loud, repetitive noises can trigger both rock slides and avalanches.
I LOVE this road, and I I LOVE driving it wile jamming out....
    At a RESPECTABLE volume.
I know this sounds silly, but it's based on scientific facts.
    Respect this mountain pass.
Keep the jamming to a respectable minimum 🎶 💕

Thanks for the input. I think if you ever film the road, you find its not so easy. One person has to pay attention and drive, and if your passenger is scared of the drive, well it makes it difficult to get usable footage. We will try to do better in the future.
