Rip Robert Hunter… and now, very sadly, we have the passing ( late October 2024),of Phil LESH himself… The arrangement and the amazing lyrics, just absolutely beautiful! THANK YOU DAVE! You are one of the best at teaching the Grateful Dead… Phil’s passing brought me here as well, this is very soothing for the Soul! ❤️🩹🎸🎶
Hey thank you this is my favorite Dead song! I just recently discovered the Dead and was really drawn to this one. I also started practicing guitar earlier this year and Im so happy that these are all chords I know! I seriously cant get enough of this song so thank you so much for the tutorial!
Hello ! I’ve eat your lesson !!!🍅🥬🌽🍊 The strumming ,particulary!...and attentively! I see the light now! Thanks a lot from France ! Chris and Chelsea 🐕 !☮️
Excellent lesson. I’ve been playing guitar, singing and writing songs since the late 1970’s and have struggled to render good solo acoustic/vocal versions from full band recordings. I honestly believe that this video will help me finally lock Box of Rain into my permanent repertoire. I can see that you truly understand and can articulate the subtle and elusive details of doing what I strive to do with accompanying myself on guitar. I’m eager to see what else you have to offer.
Hi Dave, thanks for putting your heart, knowledge and skills into teaching us this fine tune. Written by a great poet, who touched so many, and played by an amazing band.
Awesome work. Thank you! Remember though, David Nelson (New Riders guitarist) is the author of the electric guitar for this track. Dave Torbert plays the bass. It's Phil on the acoustic guitar though. Jerry is actually on the piano for this one, believe it or not.
That was awesome. You totally straightened me out on this tune to performance level. Now, will my band have the discipline to learn all the nuances? We'll see! At least I have a flawless chart now.
Thanks so much Dave! This was a very cool lesson and I really needed to spend some time learning the chords and structure while obsessing about this complex song. Very helpful! Such a profound song - and a great back story
Hey Dave, I think your teaching style is excellent and you deserve more views. Something you may want to consider is getting some thumbnails, it'll help you get more attention
Great lesson. Point of fact: Phil Lesh did not write any of the lyrics. They were written entirely by Robert Hunter. Phil wrote all the music and sang it.
He did! I only recently learned a lot about that record I didn't know, Jerry is playing piano and that is not a steel Nelson is playing. The Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast has been a great eye-opener.
Phil's passing brought me here. Thanks for this lesson. And RIP Phil.
Same here :(

Ur so basic
Eyes of the world is far superior
Thank you for providing the strumming pattern, and explaining everything so clearly, concisely.

I love your teaching style. Thanks for the help on the strumming! I love your whole vibe. I love playing GD songs with my friends.

Thanks for sharing. Let there be songs to fill the air.
You are a good teacher and I don't say that lightly or often.

Best tutorial for this song. Very much looking forward to the solo tutorial!

Interesting! Makes sense, really, the track has such a different sound tonally.
Dave, thank you so much for this lesson. You are truly a natural teacher. Fantastic lesson.
I’m blown away Dave, you’re a fantastic teacher. Thank you for breaking this down for me.
Great teaching style! Fabulous song! Thanks for sharing this video... I play mandolin, but the info here translates to that instrument very well.
Thanks, Dave, stellar lesson.
Really enjoyed this!

You mentioned the dynamics of the GD, so true! You really must feel certain songs to play them well. Love the way you teach too. *****
I wasn’t familiar with this GD song. Thanks for the lesson. What a beautiful song. I hope I can do it justice. I aspire to play it as well as you did.

Great Lesson
I wish i could up vote this every time i come back to this video which is often
Love your lessons!
Great lesson Dave! I learned a lot. I would definitely be interested in Jerry's solo if you ever want to teach it.

Written lyrically for Phil & his passing father by Hunter
Yes, but written by the Master lyricist Robert Hunter ❤
It's great but I don't see the chords progression ??
one of the best songs on American Beauty.
The best on an album of great tunes!
Excellenta
Thanks for the lesson. My girlfriend and her dad are also greafull dead fans
How many guys named Dave love the Grateful Dead? The number is staggering.
I believe Marmaduke Nelson played that solo on the record......not Jerry
He did! I only recently learned a lot about that record I didn't know, Jerry is playing piano and that is not a steel Nelson is playing. The Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast has been a great eye-opener.
I think it was David Nelson of NRPS who played it on a Telecaster. Dave Torbert -- also of NRPS -- played bass and Phil was on acoustic guitar.
