I was at this show. It was the last time I saw the dead with Jerry. So sad to learn of Phil's death. Such a long long time to be gone. Such a short time to be there. Alav Hashalom.
I was there too. I remember Freddie King's Hideaway while Bobby kicked his guitar rig until it worked. RIP Phil...you will be missed, but never forgotten.
I grew up in Palo Alto close enough to Shoreline that I could hear the bands if I sat out on the porch. I could always tell when the Dead were in town and I'd hop on my bike and ride over to check out the parking lot scene. I'd walk around a bit then find a nice spot on a grassy bank to take it all in. Had pretty awesome experiences at night riding back through the bay lands watching the the lights of the police cars as they cruised around the golf course chasing the hippies away.
Like Phil said ( Thank You Robert Hunter ) “ Such a long long time to be be gone and a short time to be there “. Those were the last words of my late Brother Michael’s Eulogy read by my son Stephen 🙏
I was always so sad that it seemed Phil was so uncomfortable singing lead. This song to his father was one of the best songs that was ever written by the band. Yet, there are so few decent live versions of this. I saw them live on Phil’s birthday on Long Island and they closed with this. I’d love to but, I can’t say it was spectacular!
The Great and Immortal Robert wrote the Lyrics to this tune. When My Older Brother Michael passed away 5 years ago , My Wonderful Son Stephen did his eulogy. As I stand next to My heart broken Mother , My Son looks at Me and sez Dad , in The words of the Great Robert Hunter, such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there 🙏🥲 I will never forget that day as long as I live.
Actually, he sang on the album version (American Beauty) but that was back in 1970...,he was a back-up vocalist for a long time; but I read that he ruined/strained his voice because he wasn't a trained singer.
I’m here listening to Box of Rain thinking of My late older Brother Michael. Gone almost 5 Years. Such a long long time to be gone and a Short time to be there. 🙏🥲
This was a streamed broadcast. Those of us on the east coast gathered with a TV and speakers setup and watched till the early morning. We leave you Phil.✌️
oh my gosh i LOVE Phil doing the "Box of Rain" signal before the song starts...kinda like a baseball coach giving the signal to steal a base or something. And yeah, Bobby is totally the pretty boy in the shorts! And Jerry...i miss him SO much!
This is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago :) thank you for sharing this one!! This was my first show (deadhead from Germany, in case anyone remembers ;) ...)
SAW MANY MANY SHOWS..BUT THE BEST WAS THE DEAD AND ALLMAN BROS SUMMER OF 72 IN NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT OUTDOORS 3 HRS EACH THAN TOGETHER FOR 1 HR...WHAT A GREAT DAY
such a freaking awesome song.. gotta say just was lucky enough to c Jerry. however Stu Allen fronted Dark Star at days between and it's always the song.. not the singer.. Stu what an amazing day it was. thank you from the top/bottom of my DH heart. I'm 66 and never have I seen an all day hero performance like that. cudis
Agreed. For a bunch of roughly 50 Year old Dopers from San Francisco, they were just incredible. Also , Don’t ever forget The Great Robert Hunter who co wrote this song. R.I.P. Robert Hunter. 🙏
Phil sang 3 songs in Chicago in '95, I was trippin and laughing to my buddies yelling "Never had a lesson!" Childhoods End, Broken Arrow & Box; what a show! 🥲
This was a great show! I had just flown back from the Bahamas and brought a big conch shell. We got folks to line up along the back rim of the amphitheater and when I blew the conch, we all rolled down as one 'unbroken chain'. If you were there, you remember getting kicked in the head! Thanks for the memories.
fuck yeah i love this im feeling great and so is everyone else so enjoy it much love phil lesh and friend this is the best shit ever hard shit man were talking super herion just let the music play longe live the DEAD :)
This is a FANTASTIC ???don't want to call it a video, it's obviously pro filmed, curious as to for what??? (the person who I would normally ask is being weird right now, so I'll have to wait, darn it!) But it is awesome for all Warriorstrail says above & more IMO. I like Shoreline, it wasn't my fav but. I liked the late 80's Bobby w/ pnytail & BRENT! but yeah, it's THAT beg w/ the "we want Phil" chant inc & the boys talking it over & all of them smiling thru out & the views of heads dancing A++
RIP Phil. What a great memory.

Ditto that
Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there. Thanks Stephen. Miss You Dad. 🥲
I was in the Phil Zone for my last show. Legends never die.
What a beautiful memory in time, grateful to have my young soul be part of this moment. Always a treat to catch Phil take the lead. ❤
The intro before the music even starts, with the fans shouting we want Phil, and bob and Jerry laughing....brings many chills in a great way
I’m so with you lol … I was on the east coast that tour and BOR was amazing experience ❤
such a long long time to be gone. miss you Phil
It was too short a time to be there.....
Outstanding! Thanks for everything Phil!

My homegirl is in charge of my funeral song list and this song is played first. It's more for them than for me.
Agreed. Let’s not forget The Late Great Poet Robert Hunter had a hand in there as Well. God Bless them all. 🙏
Such a short time #2bthere⚡️💔
That intro. How sweet that this comes up in my feed today.
Rest in Peace Phil

😢❤❤❤
Fare thee well Phil...
Phil here with the most lovable horrible vocal performance. One more thing to love about the GD.
Actually, he sang on the album version (American Beauty) but that was back in 1970...,he was a back-up vocalist for a long time; but I read that he ruined/strained his voice because he wasn't a trained singer.
Thank you Warriorstrail for posting this version! So sweet!!

GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD 🙏😁💕
Phil sang 3 songs in Chicago in '95, I was trippin and laughing to my buddies yelling "Never had a lesson!" Childhoods End, Broken Arrow & Box; what a show! 🥲
He also sang Unbroken Chain out of Space near the end of the final show before singing Box, the final song.
Phil Lesh looks like Hareld Ramos when he does that "who me, hey" gesture. Full on Stripes vibes.

We got folks to line up along the back rim of the amphitheater and when I blew the conch, we all rolled down as one 'unbroken chain'. If you were there, you remember getting kicked in the head!
