I'm fast approaching sixty four and have played guitar (self-taught) most of my life, and I have to say this is the best guitar tutor I've ever seen. Whenever I want to learn a song I usually just play it by ear/memory, but on occasion I can't be arsed, and particularly if I know it's a more sophistocated technique I'll revert to an online tutor. They invariably either ramble on endlessly, give protracted, unnecessary information or are just plain wrong. This seven and a half minutes have been a joy to watch. No-nonsense chord illustration and sounds exactly like Johnny Marr. Thank you so much Ry, and anyone tuning in ...this fella knows his stuff.
Thanks for this. I only had this partially, so I picked up a few more chords. This song is literally my favorite to play on guitar. Johnny Marr hit it out of the park with this one!
Agree, sometimes it is way to slow and sometimes people just play the song an expect you to understand all the little changes. This was the perfect middle ground.
Thank you so much for this brilliant lesson. I purchased a Johnny Marr Jaguar a couple of months ago, and all I want to do is learn Smiths songs! You made it so easy! Thank you again, and such a beautiful guitar! Cheers mate!
THANK you for this!! I was almost exactly right when I taught myself this but was playing some of the bridge way too far up the heck, really hard to get the ringing notes that way. Well done!
For the "I've seen this happen..." part, try the final two chords as C with pinky on fret 3 of high E, then slide that same shape up two frets for the D
Ry Jones see the bit at the end with morrissey singing I’ve see this happen in ordinary life’s and now it’s happening in mind Johnny uses a reverse reverb thanks mate
Isnt it in the key of b major ? Sorry to be nit picky but I have a tab book of Smith's songs and it says it's in b major. Thanks for the video. Even though I have the book this song is extremely difficult to get the chord changes right along with the feel. I just cant hear the guitar well enough in the mix to hear what's exactly going on in the actual song. I wish there was an isolated guitar part somewhere.
The fellow brings up a nice point though as far as the mix in smiths songs…Johnny has a strong central guitar idea that gets put on the back burner after he layers overdubs and keyboards…when you see/ listen to an instruction like this you see what a gem johnnys central idea was…I know this video is a cover but I see it as an “uncovering” of Johnnys beautiful chord sequence…thanks for this vid
An Epiphone Sheraton is great for The Smiths songs, Johnny Marr used a ES-335 but is the same thing. I think the most important thing to get Johnny Marr's tone is to get either a Fender Twin Reverb amp or a Roland JC-120, they both sound really nice but i prefer the JC-120 because you can use the chorus from it wich is technically a clone of the BOSS CE-2. That's the key to get a perfect clean tone and achieve the same chorus effect that Marr used.

Thanks so much, really means a lot 😀
As a young lad learning guitar, I listened to Hendrix and thought, I may be able to do that. I listened to Johnny marr and I thought wtf!
It's a whole different ball game 🎸
It’s the other way around
What is?
The genius of Johnny Marr is putting these chords together because this is brilliant. My favorite of his!!!!!
Fooking Johnny Marr- brilliant

Man, Johnny Marr sure knows how to tie a shitload of chords in a sequence, but it does sound good.
Perfect pacing of the lesson. Brilliant

Really good, great playing and explanation.
Stellar tutorial! Really helped break down what I once thought was a tricky song. (Now to just remember all these chords in sequence)
At 5:13 … that imo makes J Marr one of the greats

Sublime
Beautiful rendition and beautifully played. Thank you.
You're a great teacher. Got it within a few minutes thanks to you 😘
Outstanding! Thanks for naming the chords! It helps to understand some theory.

This is great, mate. Three years on, would love to see the whole thing played and sung!
THANK you for this!! I was almost exactly right when I taught myself this but was playing some of the bridge way too far up the heck, really hard to get the ringing notes that way. Well done!

Hi! I'm playing in A but the capo on second fret technically makes it B

Nice Noel guitar!

Can you make a vid of your Epiphone Riviera Matsumoku? That an ‘83 Wine Red like Noel Gallagher’s?
Hi! Yes it was the 83 but I unfortunately don't have it any more 😕
Hoping to get a new one soon.
Ah man, thank you so much for this! .....please do Get the Message (Johnny Marr/Electronic)
what effects and settings you using ? ive got a sheraton and struggle to get a proper smiths sound
Wish I could help man. Or that someone else who knows would respond. I love the smiths and wish you the best with your guitar growth
