I wish I knew this. My moms birthday was yesterday and I got her Lily’s. She cut the stem and then I see my cat playing with it. He had it in his mouth. I looked it up and and OF COURSE it’s the most dangerous! He’s in the ER right now getting an iv for two days. I feel like a terrible cat dad. I’m preying he’s going to be ok. I love him so much.

Mint, catnip, wheatgrass, cilantro are some nice plants that are safe. Roses and sunflowers are safe flowers

I'm dutch, so you may understand why I'd have an affinity for tulips. They're incredible to me, and I don't even have a cat yet, but I don't plan on getting tulips currently

That's not going to solve the problem. There are indoor plants that are equally poisonous. I'm adding another cat. Therefore, I'll be relocating my indoor plants again to a new cat free zone.

Whenever I go to Lowe's for plants I am thoroughly armed with the ASPCA toxicity list. My cats are pretty great at leaving indoor plants alone but we aren't taking any chances in this house!
I will try the cat grass, and of course the only plants I kept were non-toxic. But I wish mine were "pretty great at leaving indoor plants alone" too!

We discovered that the Rose of Sharon (aka Hibiscus Tree) caused our cat to have a seizure. Our vet was shocked the tree was not listed. Please keep it in mind.

@abigailshaw9817 there is a list of plants that are toxic to cats. The Rose of Sharon is not listed on it even though it causes seizures in cats. Our vet informed us after our girl ate a leaf off of the tree.

I stopped getting flowers altogether! If someone gifts me them I just give them to my mom (cat free). And I have a couple fake bouquets around the house. Although my cats do still enjoy destroying them at least they don't eat them and I know they won't be poisoned. Plus fake flowers dont wilt or need water. And they stay in full bloom!
I'm a big fan of fabric/pastic flowers! My cats dont get insterested because they smell like soap. :)
I love plants. Nothing can beat knowing you are nurturing little beautiful beings. My cats are young and I do have like 2 poisonous leafy plants but I keep them in my leo gecko and chinchillas room where the kitties aren't allowed unless I'm with them. It's just completely different. I'm growing some catgrass so they can have some leafy greens of their own. Only one of them has ever shown interest in the plants to a concerning point. So I make sure they are up and away. Kitties are about 10 months old or so they grow up so fast :')

Glad you mentioned bouquets. Don’t forget the lilies in the bouquets! I knew a cat owner who was careful to not have any lily plants. She almost forgot it was in a bouquet she received. When she realized, she put it behind closed doors up in a bedroom where her cat doesn’t go and wouldn’t you know the cat went there, ate it and almost died but luckily survived. She thought she was being careful and felt so bad that it happened and for almost a week, she wasn’t sure if the cat would live. It can be easy to forget bouquets even if you think you’re being very careful in general. With lilies it is not worth the risk. I don’t like them anyway, the pollen goes everywhere.
Im keeping cats temporarily for my son. I have some lesser toxic plants that I’ve been able to keep out of reach. There are so many toxic plants both in my home and new ones that I’m tempted to buy sometimes. It was getting discouraging. It felt like all my favorite plants where rated as toxic. But what I do to make it easier for me, is I try to focus on all the pet safe plant options. Ultimately, you can’t own every kind of plant in nature and it’s good to remember there are so many beautiful safe plants. Examples are African violets and orchids. So learn which are toxic and avoid those but don’t feel deprived. Focus on all the non toxic options that are available. Even so, I try to keep them out of reach.
Jackson can we request a video for what plants we can have or are good to have for our kitties? I love having cut flowers on my kitchen bench but after my girl munched on lillies I'm terrified to have any flowers on there anymore!

Maybe I'm late, but still: if you want a comprehensive list there's the link in the description. My personal advice: prayer plants are all non toxic and very beautiful, but if you don't have a green thumb a Marantha ("fishbone prayer plant") is the best, they're easy to care for and inexpensive. Calathea are also beautiful prayer plants but in some houses they struggle, so they can be more challenging

Thank you, Jackson for give this important information to cat owners. Last year my dear Peter almost died. My daughter came to visit me with a beautiful bouquet of Astromelias, from the Lilys family. Two days later my cat Peter looked dead and I took him to the nearby vet hospital., where he stayed for 3 days and a half with IV fluid and lots of medicines. It took him 10 more days at home with medicines to be totally well. Every cat owner and also dogs owners should see this video and check up the list of toxic plants and flowers on the Internet. Dear Jackson, you are very important for all of us who love animals.

Yes but we are much less likely to nibble on the plants. If there are children who are inclined to take a bite keep them out of reach!

Thanks Jackson for sharing the link to ASPACA’s toxic and non-toxic plants. I’ve used this list before, it’s a very good comprehensive list.Unfortunately, I learned the hard way. When I first got my kitty, I had an aloe Vera plant and my kitty loved digging and playing in it. But then the next day she vomited, had diarrhea, wasnt eating, and he body was warm and I think she might have even had a fever! My husband thought she was fine 🤦♀️. Luckily my mothers institution kicked in and I took her to the vet that day and got her checked out and cleared out. I felt like a bad kitty parent, but I think having that natural mother’s instinct and taking her in immediately saved the day. Lesson learned, got rid of the Aloe Vera, kept the Spider Plant! 👍

Had a little scare a few weeks ago with a Lily hybrid in a bouquet I was given. I simply thought they caused an upset stomach, and was very alarmed to find out that it can kill a cat very quickly. I will be far more vigilant in the future!
Jackson, thank you so much for this! I can’t wait to see your future videos on cat food, diet, nutrition, whatever you end up calling it. This has been an internal war for me, knowing cats are obligate carnivores, knowing raw diets are optimum, but trying to also balance budget and convenience. Because the reality is, doesn’t matter what commercial food you’re looking at, none of it is good enough and I know it. I do my best with what I can get, but I am always looking to see how I can do better. There’s so much information online, it’s hard to distinguish what is trustworthy even when you’re just tying to learn how to switch your cats to a raw diet that will still provide them all the necessary nutrients they need.

Here to give you those views so TH-cam doesn't punish a reupload. I had just bought a new houseplant (a nontoxic money tree) before the first upload. I spent days looking up houseplants I won't easily kill and ones that won't kill my cats.
Also, I really like that you included why the video is a reupload. I'm always curious what someone is getting penalized for and like to know what changed in the video.
Jackson, since most air fresheners, essential oils, scented candles, and potpourris are toxic to cats, how could someone make their house smell pleasant without getting them sick?
Clean your house
I use the scented wax melters. Just make sure the cord is somewhere that kitty can't get to. I had a cat who got so excited during play time that he ran into the cord and pulled the melter off the shelf. Cleaning wax off of floors is very hard.
Use an air purifier
He said you could try flower “essences” but I guess you can buy perfumes with no particular floral scent and spray them?¿👀

I've been wanting to incorporate more "green" into our home for air purifying and adding color to our outdoor garden, but I've been trying to research what is best/healthy/ even beneficial for our kitties. I had no idea about the rhododendron, so I guess I won't be using that one in the future 😓... on a plus side: I learned Jasmine is safe, and it is also beautiful and fragrant 😄.

Also about dotty, she is a indoor cat, but she goes out on a harness and leash, don't worry, we have also have a 17 year old indoor cat, so we support indoor cat's too😺👌👍

Thank you for sharing this info about toxic plants Jackson. Many of them I knew after having cats for 60+ years, but there are some I had no idea were toxic. I don't generally have plants/flowers inside, mainly because I don't want to take a chance that there's something I DON"T know about them. I also saved the ASPCA list so I have it handy. Looking forward which plants are good for our feline friends!
I'm so lucky that my cat don't like eating flowers. But everytime when someone buys me a lily. I put it in separate room and close the door. Never ever let my cat to this little room with deadly flower !
My cat refuses to eat any plants (good or bad) whatsoever. I got him special cat grass for his fur ball and he wouldn't touch it, same with catnip... It has to be in liquid form for him to get near the nip.
Can't picture him ingesting any house plants of toxic type either, I still don't take any chances eventhough he has no interest.
I have many of those plans, ESPECIALLY DAISIES, in my garden and I am very glad that for YEARS my cats have been fine while being outdoor cats. They must have learned or they are just well fed and not even bothered to try to eat plants. Great video!! Very helpful and interesting. Also, Ivy is toxic to us too! Every time you touch it, wash your hands please, don’t eat, don’t touch wounds and eyes etc

Could you do a video about which plants you can actually buy and place in your home that have absolutely no (ill) effect on cats even if they nibble on it on occassion?
The Golden Pothos is also a beautiful plant that makes a wonderful houseplant because it needs almost no light, and moderate watering. I've seen them in restaurant decor. This plant is also horrifically toxic to cats.

Yeah, it is toxic and can have harmful effects if your cat eats a lot of it. Similar to what Jackson Galaxy says in the video, toxic can mean different things; I wouldn't say horrifically toxic for pothos. According to ASPCA it causes irritation, drooling, and vomiting. It's not anywhere near for example, lilies which are likely to cause kidney failure and death. Like Alena I also have it in my house with 4 cats and have never had issues with it. The kitties would have to eat a lot of pothos to really cause a problem. Hope that helps!

Lilies of the valley are toxic even to little kids. Believe it or not, I used to put those little flowers in my mouth.
By the way, the daisy family, Asteraceae, is HUGE! I don't know if all of its members are toxic to cats or not, but I would be cautious. It includes chamomile, lettuce (yes, lettuce!), dandelions, artichoke, sunflower, tarragon, a whole host of ornamental plants like dahlias, mums, and zinnias, goldenrod, and many many many other things. The most terrifying thing is that I saw a chamomile and catnip mixture marketed as a cat product at Walmart. Keep all plant-based human foods away from your cats and just be super careful about your houseplants.

Wonderful video, thank you so much! This is really helpful. I do want to mention real quick that the video you have for the poinsettia slide shows begonia plants, not poinsettias. Poinsettias have large flowers with leaf-like petals arranged in shape of a star, and the plant grows in kind of a rounded shape. Begonias have small, rounded flowers on a tall stalk, and either rounded or pointy leaves. Begonias and poinsettias are both toxic to cats but they look very different.

I heard Ficus was toxic to cats, so I removed it from my room when I got my kitten. Surprised that it wasn't mentioned here.
I used to have a plant called mimosa pudica the shy plant but now I think it's better to have fake plans so no harm no foul I am so so grateful to you Jackson if it wasn't for you I would have by now have made so many silly but deadly mistakes

I love that you help so many cats and their people servants. I have a cat who meows non-stop from the second she is put in a carrier to go to the vet, till she gets out of it. I once timed her, and she meowed once every 2 seconds for the 5 minute trip to the vets. She was panting heavily when we took her out of the cage at the vets. So last week we tried your "scaredy Cat" drops, and sadly, it did not seem to help much. I didn't time her last time, but she only meowed a little less. Maybe once every 3 to 4 seconds. :-( Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am considering using CBD oil for cats.

It's in the aspca link, some examples are the spider plant, calathea/prayer plant, cast iron plant, bromeliad, Chinese money plant, banana plant, money tree, bamboo and some (not all) succulents like echeveria and the Christmas cactus. Hope this helps!
The messed up thing about that website is it keeps crashing instantly like they don’t want me to see what’s on there so I’m just going to have my cats are gonna stay indoor permanently and I’m gonna have no plants. I’ll keep it simple as that.
I knew lillies were bad for them, but I had no idea HOW toxic with such a small amount until one of my cats ate them. $3k later and she is just fine, we got her in for treatment before she had symptoms...but of course she had to eat them after hours on a Friday night, so her whole treatment was at the emergency clinic 🤑
I have around 50+ plants at my house, which are all either 100% not toxic or LIGHTLY toxic. I offer my cats alternitives such as cat grass, catnip, spidergrass and so on. It took a long while to get the cat from my boyfriend to not try to eat certain plants, but now he's chill and knows he got his own home plants
Lady Palms and cast iron plants are both safe for cats and are beautiful large green plants. They’re super easy to care for too. Highly recommend them! I’m thinking of growing catnip next for my fur baby.
Always google houseplants before buying to check if they’re toxic to the types of animals you have, and kids too

Okay I am even more angry at my old roommate now after watching this video. She uses to blow the non advertiser friendly plant smoke at my cat all the time and it would drive me nuts. She'd also let her get into her bag of the stuff and roll around.
I'm lucky she never had serious side effects.

Thank you for another helpful video. we have outdoor cats. I have all my flower bulbs covered with chicken wire to protect them from animals fooling. I have a poinsettia indoor but it's in my room which is off-limits for cats. There is a big garden in the back and the grass is full of daisy, I didn't know they are poisonous to cats. :/ They eat lots of grass. It seems that they are great at choosing the right grass to eat. At Christmas time we always have a fake tree and put citronella oil on the base, which is disgusting for cats. :D Works very well on everything inside and outside of the flat.
I’ve never seen my cat try to eat a plant. But we also usually keep most of our plants downstairs. But I just got an Allo plant and it’ll be upstairs in her territory so I want to be extra careful.
I am really allergic to lilys so never knew about that. I do grow them way out in the yard since they are pretty. but no more!

Ficus are reaaally toxic too ! 2 years ago, one of our kitties was sick (we went 2 times to our vet without a clue what was going on), and there was a ficus indoor (we didn't know it was toxic at that time, we knew for a lot of plants but not this one in particular), tree that she was truly happy to climb all the time, of course (so she only had physical contacts, but maybe when she was cleaning herself, ate and tasted toxins from the ficus)...Fortunately, we moved it outside quickly because we figured it out, and she stopped vommiting immediately 🙏 Now she's fine with her brother 🤗
I learned to keep only bromeliad species within chomping distance of my cat. Even then, some broms have sharp spikes on the rims of their leaves - so I tried to only leave smooth-edged species for my feline friend. He really liked to 'prune' the poor things, but at least I knew he was safe! I'd gladly trade scraggly broms for a satisfied & living kitty.

Maybe just in large dosages. My cats fight even with a little nip, so I rarely give them any.

I used to have daisies at my old house. One of my late cats wouldn't stop chewing the petals. We stopped him every time. He never got sick from it. I never knew that daisies were so toxic. 😨
Edit: All of my cats were strictly indoor only. I brought the daisies inside from the patch of them out front.
I am picking up a new member to our pack. She is 14 weeks. I have 40 plants. Our older cat do not eat on my plants. But you never know what kinda silly little cat she will get 😊 A year ago when I adopted the older cat I saw this video and really did my best with the plants. I moved them all.

I had to Google my plants to make sure.. I only own 2 that are toxic both are kept well away from my kittens.. I do own a lilly plant that will be kept right away from them. It was gifted to me on mothers day for my mum whos favourite flower was Lillie's and in memory of her I have my plant. It lives on my kitchen windowsill behind my sink where cats can't get to. And I have an aloe plant that is again kept up away from them and will be moved again as they get older to a spot they won't get to. My other plants are absolutely safe for cats and look stunning.. Just don't want them chewed on so again, they're away where my cats can't get at them.
Tetrahydrocannabinol, the toxin of the plant he can't talk about, requires heat to be activated. If the plant is raw, I don't understand how that could be an issue. Can someone explain it? I legitimately want to know how it works.
Same i was also thinking I know some growers who happen to also own cats and have herd them complain about the cat taking a nibble other then the loss of a bud nothing really happened aka the cats were fine so I too would like to know
My dog ate some weed (dried) and he got high as a kite. They metabolism it in a different way and have WAY more cannabinol receptors so no, heat is not required.

I had just read an article about how some cannabinoids could kill cancer cells so I thought fuck I might as well try it if it dosent work it ain't like I'm cutting her life shorter... so I tried giving her some weed she liked it and she loved getting high it worked and she got healthy fast forward 6 years and that little bitch still stole if I dident offer her a bit of the nug
It doesn't require heat, it just makes the substance more active.
There are also other cannabinoids in the plants than just the one. Also that activates it for human consumption but even inactivated it can affect a cat.

I live in Oregon, and there’s Evergreen Pine trees all around my house and streets. I’m harness training my kitten, I’ll have to be careful and watch out for what’s on the sidewalks

I was about to post the same thing! I would add too that indoor plants are becoming more and more popular, so a video about common toxic indoor plants would be very helpful. My indoor only cats love to eat my plants so I have to be careful, but those that I have heard are toxic are kept completely out of reach.
Also a lot of these are also toxic to humans, oleander especially. As a general rule, don’t eat household plants, and keep your cats away from your plants

@JacksonGalaxy I have an air diffuser and I haven't used it since I got my kitten. Can I still use it? Because I am kinda scared and worried about the results I am getting online. Like what oils or smells should or should not use?
The list is practically every plant except plastic ones. My 5 year old baby has enlarged kidneys. He never ate houseplants, but I have a Peace Lily (for years) and he may have ingested some of the pollen from the brief flower that comes out. I'm devastated that I caused his illness, and as of this writing I'm struggling.
My husband and I trained our cat to walk on a leash and harness so we can walk her in areas that are safe
Luna my Bengal is indoor outdoor. It works for her as it calms her down. Now Pete my DLH stays in always.

I do have pothos which give them a tummy ache and they vomit. I have never had a cat who ate them. I do have a cat who rips off the vines when she is pissed off, but she will shear it with her paws and then clean them in our cat fountain (a MUST for any cat home).

Hi, is it safe to have some toxic plants in the outdoor garden if my cat is indoor? I want to adopt but also respect my elderly dad's huge garden without limiting what he plants outdoor too much
only plants going in my house are plastic plants, catnip, and wheat grass (and my kitties stay indoors)
