This is very important footage, as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Jimmy Forrest are in the band at the same time. Through the 60s Davis was the de facto 1st tenor, with Forrest replacing him in the 70s. Throughout that time Eric Dixon was rotating between 1st and 2nd tenor, rarely out of the band for close to 20 years. Basie says in Last of the Blue Devils, "Other than our rhythm section, I think the band was mostly built around tenors", following a reflection on Lester Young. Typically, Jumpin' at the Woodside features a tenor battle to end the show. It's curious that two of the greatest tenors from the Second Testament era of the Basie Orchestra don't battle on the finale.
