Just gorgeous! First-hand, what a unbelievable tune written by Don! Looks like Ernie might have had a influence arranging this! Fills me with the holy ghost!
Bill was writing a story wherein he nimbly employed coherence, melodic relevance, mood appropriateness, and logical progression that blossomed into a climactic boutique of excellence 👏 👌 That's the Art, rather the Science of Improvisation, I am persuaded. Turrentine's portrait was unceremoniously abridged by a very talented but seemingly impatient craftsman; Ernie was indeed in a haste. Nonetheless, he told his story effectively - no playing around.
Nice to see follow up respect for Bill’s musicianship. I was referring to comments from good musicians( lack thereof 3 yrs ago on this video. He’s a fine player. He stayed at my place on Maui for a week about 18 yrs ago. I didn’t pick his brain out of respect. Maybe I should have.😀😄
Four very different individualist reed soloist, disciplined to a set full of contrasts. Accompanied by world class rhythm section. Very interesting performance of a meanwhile standard tune.
First heard this on Don Gronick's album Hearts and Numbers. I had transcribed most of Mike's solo from that version. This is a great version with the saxes playing the piano harmonies. Ernie is burni'n. Mike awesome as always .Love Mr. T's big fat soulful sound and Bill's soprano is beautiful too.Monster lineup of saxes! Would be nice if there was a big band version of both of these tunes :)
…Stanley Turrentine took the most lyrical and truly expressive solo here. And I’m a fan of all 4 of these saxophone players. Who’s not.. Bill Evans’ adventure was transporting while Watts and Brecker jousted in an almost purely chops and acrobatics contest with hints of true soul. Can't really blame them though ! Great solos in their own mechanical way sprinkled with soul. Stanley and Bill are the musical standouts here in this one. And yeah its all subjective.. I rarely critique performances by true greats like that but as a saxophone player Turrentines’s and Evans’ performance really hit me. Thank you for this post 🌟
I am glad that those vibratos which were so cool in the 80s and 90s have almost disappeared. Ernie Watts on alto? That's surprising! But after hearing Branford alto recently, playing his ass off, that should not surprise me.
Why does it have to be one vs. the other? Makes no sense whatsoever! Two COMPLETELY different players who have always had two different styles. Asinine!!
Four of the greatest saxophonist of recent times Ernies solo is killer !!!
Don Grolnick was one unjustly underrated pianist. incredible personnel.
truly great composer as well
Sorely missed, for sure.
And arranger, and producer....... James Taylor comeback springs to mind
I forgot how good Ernie Watts was back in the 80's holly cow = he's on fire!
He's even better now! :)
Stanley's solo was so soulful!!!!

Ennie was on🔥 and those altissimos wow. 🙏🏽
Brecker's solo had tears rolling down my face!
He is hot as lava ❤
The way Brecker sculpts this solo is just so good. Listened to this a bunch and transcribed it, still sounds so fresh every time! 🔥🔥🔥
Only a group this stacked could bring tears to anyone’s eyes 😢 Such beautiful playing by everyone here.
4 of the best players on the planet! RIP Michael and Mr.T
and Mr G
I cant believe no props for Bill. His pitch in the ensemble playing is superb. Hes a fine player.
Agreed. Bill can play, and plays soprano in tune..Ernie is a great studio and pop player.

Damn!! Michael is so clean . Beast mode,
Wow Ernie really has it going on!

7.12 - 7.16 Mr T's signature phrasing - so beautiful.

Great and fabulous players!!! All working in harmony. Each musician a Star player. Beautiful stuff.
This is like a 400 meter Olympic relay, the best swimmer goes 1st and the GOAT the last. They surely brought home another Gold!🏅
Very cool all great players and what a great tune von Don Grolnick.
Many many sax players today. But these 4 really know how to play it. It doesn't always need to be the loudest part of every song.
30 ans plus tard, j'ai toujours autant de plaisir à les écouter 😊
Miss ya Mr. T!
goddamn ernie rips it up here
Earnie Watts just blew my mind
Healing for the soul ! Beautifully played harmonious sounds !
Stanley Turrentine FTW! He plays with the most soul - something that can’t be taught.
Damn! Stanley Turrentine playing “pools”! How sweet to see “Mr T” gettin’ after it & Michael Brecker playing with authority as usual.
what a great tune "four sleepers" is
Une seule hâte, écouter le solo de Mister T,❤
What a beautiful arrangement! Thank you for sharing this!
Thank God I am a sax player. Greatest instrument ever created next to piano.
Ah! 4 years later! This hasn't aged a bit.
2022-1989=33 years later not 4
@@jampoles 4 years from when I likely saw this first. Nice try though.
@@TURBOMIKEIFY You didn't specify what you meant by 4 years later so can't accuse me of a deliberate nice try
@@jampoles Nah. You're good though. I didn't need to. Read my mind.
THANK YOU! This is the first time for me to see Don playing live.
Live Under The Sky used to be at Yomiyuri Land on the Odakyu Line
Michael Brecker. Yassss
This is such a great discovery. Another, longer chunk of this concert has three Brecker-only tunes with Makato Ozone and Elvin Jones!
I came here to hear Ernie Watts.
And you left hearing several other great musicians.
Lord have mercy. That was some stuff. Bad ass jazz
Awesome tune 👏👏👏👏
Very interesting combination of sax players!
Amazing!
They all kill it!!!
Legends on stage
Turrentine damn!
Saxophone heaven...
I have this particular track somewhere in my collection whether it be cassette or BETA or VHS. GOD! I’ve heard this before
Show demais. 1000

All people playing music together.
No Saxophone player wants to follow a Michael Brecker solo
Yesssss.
10 + 1 FIREVER,,, THE BEST
Cuatro patas para una Super mesa !!!!!!!!!
Yasssssssssssssssss
BTW “Select” is a cigarette brand there
the 4 brothers!
Luhvissimo!
Music is not about competition, yet when Michael Brecker starts playing you realize he's above the rest.
Mike is the GOAT so not unsurprising. And that wasn’t nearly his best solo.
personally I think Ernie watts absolutely puts him in a body bag here
There’s a reason Michael solos last 🔥🔥🔥
Stanley Turrentine now
Thanks to Rick Margitza for composition
I am glad that those vibratos which were so cool in the 80s and 90s have almost disappeared. Ernie Watts on alto? That's surprising! But after hearing Branford alto recently, playing his ass off, that should not surprise me.
Ricardo Moraes-Pinto
Vibratos ? LOL ? There no vibrato here, you must talk about Sidney Bechet !
Huh? Ignorant!
Ernie's first gig out of Berklee was playing alto with Buddy Rich (I think)
Bill Evans. Yassssssssssss
Go don grolnick!
Brecker vs Turrentine!
Gotta say Brecker. Them high notes got it sitting right for me.
Why does it have to be one vs. the other? Makes no sense whatsoever! Two COMPLETELY different players who have always had two different styles. Asinine!!
Bad ass sax players. I never heard before
"The Four Sleepers" is the right title, please correct. Thank you very much for sharing.
Alright now. This is bad ass
A girl which never I could see give me this link. I would like to be close she in this moment
