Staubach became the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in 1971. In 9 years as a starter he led the Cowboys to 4 Superbowls and 2 NFL Championships. He missed the first 4 years of his pro career by serving in the Navy. Truly one the the greatest of all time.
He was a backup QB his first 2 yrs. In 1972, he separated his shoulder in a preseason game against the Rams and practically missed that season, coming off the bench in the last month.
I'm 49 years old and had the opportunity to see these guys play in the 70's at Texas Stadium. Born and raised in Dallas; royal blue in my blood. I can remember staring at Staubach, Landry and Dorsett on the side line as a 10 year old in awe. To this day these guys are my heroes. Always wanted to see Too Tall up close as a kid; got a chance to a couple of years ago and the kid came out. Great video!
Drew Pearson not being in the Hall is tragic. Like a Dallas sports reporter said years ago, late in a game when everyone in the stadium knew the ball was going to Drew, he always found a way to get open, whether for Roger or Danny White.

Staubach missed his first four pro seasons to his commitment to the navy. A lot of people forgot about that aspect of his career. He then sat behind Morton for two years. Despite being one of the greatest all-time pro coaches that was still Landry's biggest career blunder. Staubach is one of the greatest combined college and pro football or basketball players ever.

He played six of his eight full seasons while receivers got mugged all the way downfield and with much less sophisticated passing routes. Had he played today when receivers run free and QBs are protected from late hits and head shots, he would tear up the league. And, FYI, Richards caught the TD from Newhouse on the trick play.

Anybody else notice the huge difference in behavior of these players compared to the players of today? Classy, tough men of yesterday, compared with the selfish, way overpaid childish players of today. Touchdowns were celebrated with the occasional spike of the ball, but mostly with a high five or a pat on the back, then they got off the field. If Staubach wouldn't have served those 4 years in the Navy after college, then he would have had more NFL Championships under his belt. Those Superbowl losses to the Stealers may have never been and Cowboys may have had more Superbowl appearances with victories. Roger may have finished with 7 or 8 Superbowl rings. I never seen a QB quite like him that can engineer an offense out of anything. Of course when he played his last year it wasn't the same, but he was still a force in his final playing days.

I love Coach Landry and have all the respect in the world for him, but play calling killed Dallas on that opening drive. Dorsett ran three times for 38 yards. The Cowboys O-line was coming off the ball and controlling Joe Greene and that great front four. Then, on 1st down, Landry calls the double reverse. Fumble. Pitt takes over and goes down for the opening score. Should have kept giving the ball to Dorsett. Steelers had no answer for him. That game was winnable.

No, it was ruled correctly. Sure, with TODAY'S rules it would be considered incomplete. But back then the rules were different, and it was ruled correctly... a completed pass.
There is NO way the pass to #86 in the SB against the Broncos was a catch, let alone a touchdown. That was not a catch under any set of football rules ever. The receiver has always had to secure the ball through contact with the ground. The ground cannot cause a fumble, but it's always been able to cause an incompletion, which that pass was.
If you had a top 10 list of refs worst calls the Butch Johnson phantom TD might be #1. It wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome of the game, Cowboys were clearly the better team.

Dallas were just as good as Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 13. Yes, Steelers fans, the Super Bowl 10 score was misleading and you kicked the crap out of us in that game. Old man Gerela falls on his ass on a Kickoff and kicks it directly to Randy White who has a broken hand. Then in his worst play ever he tries to run it back, FUMBLE. Lead to Steeler TD. Dallas Blitzes on 3rd and goal and crushes Bradshaw. But the refs call delay of game. Next play franco runs it in from the 17. If Bradshaw and Gerela just did their job better on those 2 plays, history would have been altered. This game gave me nightmaresas a 10 year old/ i didn't get to see another Cowboys SB Win til' i was 25.

There is NO way the pass to #86 in the SB against the Broncos was a catch, let alone a touchdown. That was not a catch under any set of football rules ever. The receiver has always had to secure the ball through contact with the ground. The ground cannot cause a fumble, but it's always been able to cause an incompletion, which that pass was.
Wasn't the rule back then.
If you had a top 10 list of refs worst calls the Butch Johnson phantom TD might be #1. It wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome of the game, Cowboys were clearly the better team.

How can you include Butch Johnson in SB 12. Even for the 70s, that was incomplete in a million ways. Even if I was a cowboys fan, I would leave it out. Burn the tape.
Dallas were just as good as Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 13. Yes, Steelers fans, the Super Bowl 10 score was misleading and you kicked the crap out of us in that game. Old man Gerela falls on his ass on a Kickoff and kicks it directly to Randy White who has a broken hand. Then in his worst play ever he tries to run it back, FUMBLE. Lead to Steeler TD. Dallas Blitzes on 3rd and goal and crushes Bradshaw. But the refs call delay of game. Next play franco runs it in from the 17. If Bradshaw and Gerela just did their job better on those 2 plays, history would have been altered. This game gave me nightmaresas a 10 year old/ i didn't get to see another Cowboys SB Win til' i was 25.
