    When Danny White got into a "zone," he was every bit as good as either Staubach or Aikman. One of the most underrated quarterbacks in history, in my view.

      +SingleTax unfortunately he wasn't in enough of a zone as staubach and aikman when it counted.

      +mecha gojira69 Not true at all. He just wasn't fortunate enough to be the starting QB when the Cowboys' *defense* was in the same zone it was when Staubach and Aikman were the starting QBs. Was it Danny White's fault that the 49ers drove 89 yards for the winning touchdown in the NFC championship game? No.

      Darth Zod I watched every heartbreaking game im 46 years old don't assume I watched the catch (49ers)I watched the redskins game the game where white got hurt I believe and I watched the eagles game. it was like yesterday b cause there are just as memorable as big wins danny white was a pretty good qb he was left with a veteran championship team leftover from the 70's remember that.the falcons game where he came back was unbelievable and it wasn't whites fault that montana closed his eyes while threw that ball and clark was like ay look what I found and then im ASSUMING you remember that white connected with drew pearson and pearson almost broke free for the touchdown that would have beat the 49ers and the catch would mean NOTHING.he was actually horsecollared but im ASSUMING u know that rule is a rule that was implemented by the hard hitting roy Williams when he played for the cowboys actually I don't like to admit this it was roy Williams who actually busted THE GREAT EMMITT SMITHS shoulder when emmitt was older and played w the cardinals I mean emmitt could have come back the next year but its very very very tough for these great athletes to just up and quit the game b cause NOTHING can compare ever again in your life to the feeling of playing football and going to war with your teammates every year after year.please don't ever question my knowledge about my cowboys my friend I happen to believe in the scoreboard the results roger staubach and troy aikman are champions danny white is NOT and I was the biggest danny white fan ever when I was a kid.but the scoreboard always always tells the story white didn't have scrubs surrounding him he had championship pedigree around him.sorry you cannot dispute facts but I do respect your comments peace.oh and by the way just to give you perspective of how big of a cowboys fan I am while I was on my ship in the navy in '89 when they went 1 and 15 I was still happy because they beat the redskins. my friend you tangled with the wrong cowboys fan.ive been humbled b4 it happens to everybody but you don't learn unless you ASSUME and make mistakes.

    Danny White was a great QB. He just had the misfortune of playing during the eighties , the decade in which the NFC , and particularly the NFC East was becoming a powerhouse. 49ers, ‘Skins, and the G-Men all became very dominant during that decade.

    Sadly, the following year one player on the 49ers turned the tables completely: Joe Montana. In his third year in the NFL, he would lead the 49ers to victory over Dallas 45-14 in the regular season and 28-27 in the NFC championship, the latter of which featured the famous "Catch" by Dwight Clark.

    Thanks for the upload.....this really was a turning point in the history of San Francisco....Montana started the following week and this game among many convinced Walsh to obtain a new secondary of brilliant rookies in the draft. The Niners licked their wounds and learnt the lessons of this game. The following year they blew out the Cowboys at Candlestick but Dallas insisted that the real Cowboys did not show up that day. In the NFC Championship game a few months later between the two teams everything was up for grabs. We all know what happened in that historic game but the seeds of change were sewn for the Niners in this sobering rout against the brilliant Cowboys.

    In regard to their three championship games Dallas was probably emotionally spent after beating Atlanta in the divisional playoff before the Philadelphia game. Dallas came from behind on the road against a quality Atlanta team to win 30 to 27. In the second championship game the Dallas defense could not stop Montana driving 89 yards in the final minutes. In the third championship game the kicking of Septien cost Dallas along with a couple of interceptions by Hogelboom. The Dallas teams of the early 1980's were still very good but could not get over the final obstacle. Even the 1985 Cowboys won their division and went to the playoffs only to lose to the Rams. That would be Landry's last playoff appearance. Dallas was one of only two teams to beat the NY Giants in 1986 and had a good start at 6 -2. From that point on Dallas steadily eroded until 1990. Dallas was exciting to watch for first part of the 1980's and still showed similarities to the 1970's Cowboys. Tom Landry's last playoff win was against Green Bay in Dallas 37 to 26. This was the game prior to the championship game against Washington. Keep in mind that the Jets were playing the Dolphins in the other championship. Being a die hard Giants fan I remember that week leading up to the championship games with trepidation. The possibility of a Dallas v. Jets Super Bowl existed which has been lost in NFL folklore. The NY jets almost appeared in a second Super Bowl before the NY Giants went to their first in 1986. Things started to change a lot after that strike shortened season.

    I agree. To bad he didn't win a super bowl or 2. Had 3 good chances to go but all 3 championship games were away games played in hostile environments. The game at Philly was played in minus 18 degree wind chill. He got knocked out in the game at Washington and just wasn't meant to be in SF against the legend of Joe Montana. Still had a great career.

      David Skarica well they were getting a little long in the tooth I hear ya but I wonder if staubach was playing ahh who knows all these what if's right??!! it's history. they were the best team in the nfc in the 70's and if that stupid ref doesn't call interference on Washington or barnes i'm not sure but it was in the 2nd super bowl against the steelers maybe dallas wins 3 and steelers win 3 and then the dynasty moniker goes to dallas because they were in 2 more SB'S than pitt. I remember the very gentlemanly Staubach being interviewed and saying the ref that called interference must be a Communist!!!! true story and then the NFL apologizes 2 weeks later and says they made the wrong call.that's where they got the incidental contact rule from.then of course the sickest man in America Jackie smith choking in the end zone when roger hits him right between the numbers...ohh well.ezekial Elliot will be if healthy a top 5 running back this year.i thought they were gonna go for Jalen ramsey but they have been burned by 2 supposed very good corners in the draft.terrence newman sucked and morris Claiborne is sucking.plus Jalen just injured his knee and Dallas's success was when they had murray healthy and controlling the clock and not exposing the defense so it could be playoffs or bust at the very least for dallas this year.they have ezekial,romo,and Bryant and for the most part that offensive line for the next 3 or 4 years so this is it.oh yeah a suckass honorable mention is Brandon carr who they paid like a revis who just played like a guy who got his contract for life.

      If they had today's rules in play back then, The Cowboys would have had a chance to win the game in San Francisco. After the catch by Dwight Clark was made, the Cowboys was driving for a possible game winning FG. If you watch replays of the entire game, watch how Drew Pearson was tackled before the final sack on Danny White that sealed it for the 49ers. that tackle on Pearson in day and age would be 15 yard penalty.

      Norm Brewster danny white played great in that game against san fran period. I remember it like it was yesterday. hey montana was being chased by 3 cowboys and threw it up. then like u said drew pearson almost got by that tackle..it was a "horse collar" tackle but back then they didn't call those.the other 2 games were lousy.im soooo glad philly lost!!! feel bad for carr and the raiders...I would have loved to seen a classic matchup like the cowboys and raiders...oh well. been a cowboys fan for roughly 37 years unfortunately I live in ma.!!! sick of the fucking patriots. I love the sox,bruins and Celtics but when I was a kid I never liked the fact that the patriots were called "new England" instead of boston although they were the boston patriots b4 new England. ha ha at about 10 years old I had yet to really follow football yet and my grandfather asked me at the mall at a woolworths window "what helmet do you want"? (yes I'm old!!) it was like 1979 and they had 3 helmets...steelers patriots and cowboys and I picked the helmet with the classy star and from then on I said "this is my team...period.even when they were 1-15 in 89' I was happy they beat the redskins!!! I'm a true fan for sure. I would have dallas cowboy xmas's!!!!!!! when I was I kid ha ha!! did you see zekes emmitt smith sweatshirt??? the 22 was real snakeskin!!! matthew staffords texas homecoming was ruined by the U.F.O.'S as Gruden put it. lions got smashed. Sort of makes up for the 1972 Thanksgiving Day beating they took by SF 31-10. It was the Skip Vanderbundt Show (Skip who?): He skipped his way to a 73 yard fumble return for a TD and a 21 yard interception return for a TD. Had to be the greatest game of his life. I just remember the menacing look of Charlie Krueger the SF nose tackle who played without a nose guard. Far more scary than Freddy Krueger.
    Check out this link (www.knowyourdallascowboys.com/2012/11/24/the-worst-thanksgiving-games-for-the-dallas-cowboys/) for the details: The 7-3 Cowboys hosted the 49ers trying to stay close to the 9-1 Redskins. Instead, it was the Skip Vanderbundt show. He scored touchdowns on fumble and interception returns in a game that was
    never close. Dallas ended up finishing one game behind Washington in the
    NFC East. Of course, Dallas managed to avenge the loss to San Francisco
    in the playoffs in Roger Staubach’s first miracle comeback.

    Thanx for posting, too bad we couldnt see the handshake at the end of the game, I hear coach walsh was not too happy with landry, I dont think the 2 particularly cared for each other after this game. It's worth noting this was the last time Landry would beat Walsh, the last 4 games between the 2 under walsh and landry (who both left the nfl after the 88 season) would be SF 45, Dal 14 the next season, 42-17 at the end of the 83 season, 31-16 at the end of the 85 season and of course the postseason game, the 81 nfc champ game, sf 28- dal 27. Granted all 4 of those were played in SF.

    I am a huge Danny White fan. 3 straight nfc championship games. Broke almost all of Rogers records. They lasted until Tony Romo. He was in the playoffs almost every year. He played through two shortened seasons from strikes. When the offensive coordinator came over from San Fran they changed to a count and Danny excelled. In 86 highest rated offensive in the NFL first 6 games. He finally had big guys on offensive line. Coach Landry wanted to go to big guys like the skins to take up more room. White said he just knew it was his time but Carlson shattered his wrist. So he started in 80. First 4 years they went like 12-3 and 3 straight nfc games. 82-87 strike years. 86 broken wrist. 88 broken leg. Didn't play 88. So in his short time as starter held records for 22 years that were better than Staubachs and Aikmans. He did not loose those nfc championship games either. Sb are won as a team. Eagles game they let them run for like 280 yards. You can not win a game that way. Poor defence. He fought tooth and nail with Montana in nfc game. Walls thought it was a throw away pass and didn't even try on the catch pass. Pearson got caught by a finger. Could have turned a lot different they would have been in fg range. Redskins he was knocked out with concussion. He didn't loose those games. Roger had young in their prime players and so did Troy. Danny did an incredible job for only playing 8 years starting. Two strikes and being benched for Hogeboom who did nothing. The reason he was benched? Four years as a starter with 3 nfc games straight and from memory like 4 straight years with a a 12-2 or 12-3 record. White will always be my favorite qb. He had a great High school record. I think 3 fiesta bowls. Did well in the Canadian leauge. Led in punting. Was drafted by two baseball teams but chose football. Went to 4 or 5 arena bowls and won 2. Like coach Landry said Danny knew how to win. Even said he was a much smarter qb than Staubach.

    the up and down movement of Dallas O lineman was designed by Landry to hide the backfield shift of the running backs, it gave the linebackers less time to react and adjust.
    Landry also designed the flex defense to exclusively stop Jim Brown of Cleveland. When Landry was Giants defensive coordinator (Vince Lombardi was offensive coordinator- imagine those practices). Jim Brown was so quick and hit the hole so fast that Landry started bringing down lineman up and having them stand just a couple steps back of line, not quite as far back as linebackers, but just enough to give the defensive tackles an extra second to react.
    Watch rookie footage of Randy White (1975) when Landry insisted he was a linebacker, just cement trucking running backs. Randy White and the flex defense were like peanut butter and jelly.
    one last thing, no disrespect to Jimmy Johnson, but Landry drafted Michael Irvin and Troy Aickman.

      In 1980, 49ers went through almost 25-30 defensive backs. Randy Cross said they stopped putting names on their helmets because they wouldn't last a week, so why bother. In 1981, they drafted Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright and Carlton Williamson. all future pro-bowlers led by 2-year vet. Safety Dwight Hicks. This same four shutdown Dan Marino in 1984. In this game the defense was a sieve. Glaringly noticeable against a good Cowboys team. By '81, 49ers also had Fred Dean and Jack Reynolds. Their defense vastly improved, enough to beat the Cowboys 45-14 in the Week 6 of the '81 season and finally eliminating them in the NFC game 28-27.

    In today's NFL that first play would be a huge sack. Defensive linemen and linebackers are so much faster today and almost any quarterback much less one with "4.7 speed" would be roadkill.

    • @mrkackerwacker
      @mrkackerwacker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aaron Rodgers runs 4.7 and he out runs linemen routinely. And while D linemen are faster on average they aren't "so much faster" now. Just look at the speed of the game; it was still very fast back then.

    • @mrkackerwacker
      @mrkackerwacker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also, I'd put Dallas' D in tge 70's up against most nowadays; Randy White was unbelievably fast/quick, Hollywood Henderson ran a 4.3, and they had many other great athletes.

    • @zyxwut321
      @zyxwut321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mrkackerwacker I don't believe Henderson ran a real "4.3". He was fast but not that fast and besides he was only 220 pounds, the size of an average NFL safety today. There's a handful of modern defensive backs and running backs in today's NFL who run a legitimate 4.3/40. Also, Aaron Rodgers is mobile but he is not "routinely" outrunning defenders. He can escape well enough and pick up yards when it's there but he relies much more on a quick release and a timing offense to keep him upright. That first play simply doesn't happen with a "4.7" quarterback in today's NFL. Period. You do have a point about Randy White, though. He was a special athlete and he could've probably played in today's NFL (though he'd probably have to bulk up a little and get stronger).

    The 49ers used this game in particular to help springboard them to a dynasty. SF throttled Dallas in 81 and then beat the Cowboys again, this time in the NFC Championship Game in Jan 82.

    Cowboys get their ass whooped by the Niners the next years and Super Bowl Champ Forty Niners!

    Joe Montana was sitting on the bench for most of 1980 because Bill Walsh the "Genius" thought he had to Groom Montana to be the starter. The next year when Montana got the QB job all to himself Montana won the Superbowl. Groom a QB only until he's ready to win a Superbowl and not a moment before? Who does that?!! LOL!! 1980 should have been Montana's second year as the starting QB. He would have had One more Superbowl ring at the least!

      I dont think I'd question Bill Walsh, hes a hall of famer and in everybody's top 5 of greatest coaches ever.

      rawn4203 Walsh is a Hall of Famer only because he was smart enough to draft the Great Joe Montana in the 3rd round of the 1979 draft. Unlike Belichick, Walsh was never successful before, or after he coached Montana. Montana had an NCAA Championship and 2 Cotton bowls to his credit before Walsh drafted him. Keeping the Great Joe Montana on the bench for his first 2 seasons was just Flat out Stupid.

      @@radar0412 That's not entirely true. Montana wouldn't have won the championships if the 49ers didn't vastly improve that defense, which was quietly one of the best of the decade with Hall of Fame players. And not to mention drafting Jerry Rice who makes any qb look much better.

      @@ChrisC709 Montana already had two Championships before Rice arrived. The average fan isn't aware of that.

      @@radar0412 And that reason was mainly because of their defense. Just look at the difference they made in that '81 and '84 season. Where was the great Montana when he got smashed against the NY Giants several times in the playoffs in "defensive" matchups? Except for the '86 matchup(which was a total disaster for the entire team), the defense played great in those playoff matchups with the New York Giants. It was the 49ers offense who couldn't do anything. In the '90 NFC title game, "fragile" Montana again couldn't get it done getting knocked out in the 4th qtr and the offense only produce 13 points at home in a title game. And that's not even mentioning the regular season game against the NY Giants where Montana was awful completing only 12 of 29. The 49ers won that game 7-3 because of their defense not Montana and the offense. And don't get me started on his performance in that '87 Divisional game against the Minnesota Vikings. Another awful performance. That was a day the defense didn't play well and needed the offense to lift them up and Montana couldn't do it because he was inaccurate.
      My point is if the 49ers defense wasn't at it's best or near best, the 49ers would not have won those championships. In the first Super Bowl season in '81 the defense slowed down the Bengals and had a goal line stand which helped eat up the clock and help them win. I certainly don't think the 49ers would have won it in '84 season if it wasn't for their defense throughout the season and in those 3 playoff games where they only gave up 1 touchdown the entire postseason.

    Jay Saldi Dot Com!!! And let's give some credit to a top 100 QB all time in Danny White. I realize many of you don't do the math. But even if he's not a HOF QB (nor should he be) ......he qualifies as a top 50 QB guy. Always compare the opposition.
