I just think the show completely failed in its biggest job, making the twins compelling and making us care about them. As sisters we never see their bond, they share 1 episode where they are actually sisters, it’s insane to me why so little screen time was dedicated to showing us them as sisters. As individuals it’s even worse, OSHA basically is an empty vessel with no character traits, motivations or agency, she is literally dragged along through the entire season, never once making a decision for herself, she is first arrested, then she is taken to the temple, then she is forced to go look for Mae and then she is knocked unconscious and kidnapped by Qimir. Mae at least starts out wanting to kill the Jedi but she quickly abandons that motivation and from then on it’s unclear why she is doing what she’s doing and what she wants. She betrays Qimir to be with her sister, she wants to turn herself into the Jedi, she then instead fights against the Jedi and then she abandons her sisters unconscious body on a planet with a Sith walking around… her motivations are back and forth and she changes her mind constantly. Too many plot contrivances happen to get the characters where the script needs them…. It’s just so frustrating

  • @RedMangabey
    @RedMangabey หลายเดือนก่อน +126

I completely agree about the format. The 8 episodes of 30 minutes is not enough to let things rest, characters barely talk to each other and the plot just kicks them to the next story beat. The development is shallow and rushed and situations are forced and not convincing. Ahsoka suffered from that, Mandalorian S03 and now The Acolyte.

Yoda knew about all of this? It just felt like an "I did that" stamp just because she had $186M to do so. I'm not trashing it, but with what I see she wanted to do, it should have been different and better.

This is a really big problem with recent streaming shows. Hazbin Hotel is a great example of a show that had good (ish) potential, but had to have everything be super rushed due to the fact that it had to be an 8 minute long season (and apparently the studio also weren't sure if a second season was coming, so they had to make sure that *a* story was finished by the end of the 8 episodes).

I don't understand what Mother Aniseya was trying to do when she turned to a black mist.
I'm guessing Sol attacked Mother because he felt Osha was in danger, trying to save her.
I don't like the direction the story went as Osha didn't understand that he was trying to protect Mae and had killed Mother in what to me seemed to be out of confusion and fear on Sol's part. Mae could have explained the circumstances but she simply told Osha that Sol killed their mother. Sol also admitted without explanation, which caused Osha to kill him in rage and anger.

Instead, Osha flew into rage and showed no forgiveness although there was basis to do so.

I think I have three pretty big issues with the series, though I enjoyed it overall:
    - Mae and Osha are sort of the weakest part of their own series. Their mystery is central, but they as characters feel almost tagged on to this story of Qimir and the Order. So they feel almost disjointed with the rest of the action going on.
    - The Jedi's actions at the Coven weren't extreme enough or didn't have enough time to really *feel* extreme. I feel like they needed to really spend more time on the Coven attack, more time on showing the Jedi messing up, and more time on their disagreements.
    - Too many of the character motivations or events of the show required Leslie interviews. We needed more runtime per episode to really dive deeper into them.

The world building was absolutely atrocious. There are certain elements newcomers won't understand, the best example is Plagueis. The senate's influence over the Order was also quite a drastic jump from phase 1 of THR, where the Jedi had autonomy.
Sol was the only reason I kept watching the show, and my favorite thing about it. It was very frustrating seeing how the plot kept trying really hard to picture the only likeable character as a bad guy, but I still agree he did the right thing; if the writers wanted to picture him murdering the cult leader as something evil, they shouldn't have shown her trying to disintegrate a child with dark magic. But I guess this was unavoidable if the endgame was to have Osha fall to the darkside. It just wasn't a satisfying or believable journey for me as a viewer.

I think the flashbacks and mystery honestly held this show back. It’s not really structured like a mystery, the audience doesn’t follow a character as they uncover the truth. Instead, the viewer is just shown what happened in flashbacks that are completely disconnected from the main plot and then Osha, who wasn’t even aware that this was a mystery, just overhears Sol saying what actually happened. It’s really unsatisfying as a mystery while also taking away time from the main plot.

I'm sadly not very satisfied with this show. Once again, this format of short episodes doesn't help. At the same time we have shows like House of the Dragon, or even The Boys, delivering an hour every week, letting the story breathe, spending time with moments and characters. Star Wars can benefit from that. It always ends when we feel like we're getting somewhere. The greatest IP in the industry deserves to be treated as such, and elevate the story.
Mostly, I just don't think it was a very well told story. Shame, because this was maybe my most anticipated show, based on what they pitched us years ago. I feel that has changed substantially since then.
But the fighting is by far the best I've seen in years. It's absolutely amazing!

Well said, the potential was there. What they said the show would be, it wasn’t. I can get past that if I could get invested in some of the characters. I did think Qimir, Mother Aniseya were characters portrayed well. There were other characters I might have appreciated more (Jecki, Indara, Kelnacca, Yord and Senator Rayencourt) if we got to see more of them onscreen ….. but I didn’t like Mae/Osha (young or older) , Venestra or Sol’s actors choices at all. I like the actor who played Sol when he was in Squid Game, but his thick accent was big distraction for me. Mae/Osha’s quick flip flopping of actions didn’t feel legit or earned. I’m disappointed ….. To have to watch each episode at least twice and having the showrunner having to explain things after each episode is a big weakness that shouldn't be needed. Most jedi don't even know what happened on Brendok, and most that did are dead. There wouldn't be some kind of insight gained by adding 10 random knights to the proceedings.
On the other hand, one jedi inadvertently causing the deaths of dozens of people is matter for concern because it could happen again. Jedi are all over the galaxy involved with highly complex and contentious issues, often specifically to solve conflicts. If a group of jedi basically created one themselves, it puts the institution into question.

@@Lr.Laecro.Lirus3445 Let me put it this way: "The Acolyte" is a poorly written show on all levels. "Star Wars: Andor" is a well written show, and has a good story that resonates with audiences. The main message of "Andor" is how fascism is unnatural and poisons everything it touches. In 12 well-written episodes, it shows the gradual formation of the rebellion against the empire, and why a man like Cassian Andor would be inspired to join. As a series, what is the main message of "The Acolyte"? That good and evil are irrelevant, and all that really matters is who has the power? To me, that makes for a very boring story.

Am I the only one that found myself siding with Sol, more or less? Most of his actions were totally justifiable in my opinion, aside from lying to Osha. I’m not so sure we’re meant to totally sympathize with the witches, who begin every encounter with hostility, are always cagey about the girls and give the appearance of harmful intention towards them (even the girls talk about sacrificing themselves). Were that a real life scenario, it would be the duty of any outsider to try to take the girls away from what has all the signs of child abuse.
I think the intention of the show was to portray the tragedy of Sol, that he goes through all these efforts to save Osha from darkness, but that ultimately, he didn’t have the “courage to tell the truth,” and that led to the very thing he tried to prevent.

The acting was pretty non-charismatic/wooden with the exception of Qimir, Sol, and the Witches (although that “Power of 1, 2, many, etc.” thing was corny af, but whatever SW is goofy sometimes), but yea - I really disliked the acting outside of those characters, especially Amandla’s/Vernestra’s work, and all the weird unnamed Jedi. The episodes also seemed really disconnected (especially on a rewatch), and so many of the character decisions made no sense (ie. Basil being the obvious one, but there were many), also don’t understand why they had to stomp all over the lore so much. I think it’s very telling Leslye Headland had to do so much explaining in between episodes - if you have to do the explaining your show should be doing… that’s a problem. Ultimately…. I just don’t think it was well directed/acted - the concept was great, just should have gone more of an Andor route in terms of its maturity, writing, and acting quality. This was a cute concept, but a hard miss and should be struck from the canon imo. 💯

The series did an interesting job at depicting how everyone has flaws... And even if small flaws that might seem insignificant, they nonetheless all can have repercussions, which could happen to be very much significant...
The way Indara was too passive at critical moments and tried to fix things but when it was too late... Or the way Sol was trying too hard to do something significantly and concretely good...
Yeah, the right way at the right time... But also, sometimes, doing more and/or doing good, is doing less or even doing strictly nothing.
Also, the trajectory/arc of the main characters lead them to reveal their true face and intentions, down the line...
Funny how Mae only killed Indara, Torbin killed himself, The Stranger killed Kelnacca, and Osha killed Sol (without a weapon)... Mae slowly was not an active dark side player anymore ; apparently not believing that much in what she was doing and only doing it to begin with because she wanted to reconnect with Osha ! So yeah, Osha, who always wanted "something more" (adventures and discovery of her powers) is the worthy pupil, whereas The Stranger got owned by Sol ; therefore he might not be his master's favorite student anymore...
...Especially because the 'creating life with the Force' thingy, is a power this particular dark lord is quite interested about...
So yeah, about Osha ?... Darth Plagueis will watch her career with great interest !...
The only problem will most likely be that her commitment and faithfulness to the dark side is yet to be proven and might very much tend to fluctuate ! Dilemma. Because The Stranger seems to know who he is and what he wants to do with his life ; whereas Osha ended up in that position without even knowing why, and basically because she gave in to her hatred + offered herself in exchange for Mae's freedom... But that doesn't mean she can't switch back to the other side of the Force at some point (Mae is out there and their next meeting is probably gonna change the game).
Of course, Osha & The Stranger won't survive all that... The question is, in what order are they gonna perish, and who is gonna kill 'em... It's likely they're gonna fight each other (Darth Plagueis probably won't do the dirty job and will appreciate to see them trying to kill each other), but there's also a big change they're gonna unsuccessfully try to get rid of Plagueis... This being said, I'd love to see Vernestra fight Plagueis ; and we know that he doesn't die by her hands, so...

This series is the victim of this modern era ; whether it is the current business model of movies and series, but also very much the sociopolitical vibe that's going on at the moment, in which the container makes people talk and debate more than the quality of the content itself... This all overshadows so many things about quality stuffs that unfortunately are misinterpreted and down the line misunderstood, hence unappreciated.

A lot of the things you criticize are very fundamental for a show to work at all and albeit a lot of ideas and concepts are good, which are most of your positives, the execution lacks overall, and this is where the series breaks for me, and even two good episodes cannot make the difference, sinse a lot is not earned, especially many character beats and developements. The bazil scene where he sabotaged sol for no reason, he could only see sols back so don't say he was stopping sol from killing Mae cause he couldn't even see anything.. and why would sol suddenly be going to kill her even?

The mix of martial arts with fast lightsaber combat was so great to see, and it’s something I wanna see more often in future shows. I did actually like the Witches of Brendok as a look at other Force users in the galaxy (I’m also a bit biased to them after playing Hades 2). And that finale was really solid as well!

4/10 at most, 5/10 would be a stretch but ok, but 7/10? Impossible. I am watching clone wars cartoons (never watched before) and the story, pace, voice acting is much better, even more, makes me feel at home again, a thing that acolyte never did. It's a pity because with 180 million dollars they could have done something memorable. But for that you have to hire the best not your friends. Hope Disney learns something.

I'm just really sick and tired of all the general hate and bad faith criticisms. I really wish a majority of the fandom would at least be consistent. You can like or dislike what you want but it's really frustrating when people just blatantly parrot other people's opinions and go on about bad acting and writing, etc. while also propping up the prequels just to put down the Acolyte or anything new for that matter. They say we were too harsh to the prequels, which I believe is true to an extent, but then dish out the same negative treatment to anything new and wonder why people call them out for being toxic.

I pretty much agree. I really enjoyed the show but I wish we had gotten more. I think the biggest flaw is that the show gets too caught up in pretending to be a mystery when its really more of a tension heavy thriller. The need to keep certain key plot points hidden from the audience made a lot of things unclear. I wish we had gotten more of the Stranger in the first half of the series, since his perspective on the flaws of the Jedi order would have provided something new to the conversation about the fall of the organization. I did enjoy the pacing and design and I thought the acting, music and choregography all worked well. I have a feeling that like Rogue One, (a movie I had a similar response to the first couple of times I watched it) that this will improve with multiple viewings. My fingers are crossed for a second season, especially after the Plaguis cameo.

Yeah, more from The Stranger earlier on would have been good. I think the show kind of fell into the trap of being more Jedi-centric. They are an important part of the story, but I think if the show was more from Mae and The Stranger's perspective, it could have been an even more unique story.
That said, I still enjoyed the show as it is, I just want more Sith focus because there are some very interesting themes and powers to explore

I think Alex is right that his initial characterization as Qimir is a throwback to Yoda trolling Luke in ESB... But Yoda only does that for one scene and reveals that he's a Jedi master before what would have been the end of the episode if it had been a TV show.
The biggest mistake was doing the flashback as two episodes and nesting them in the middle of the series. I would have done a single flashback with all that information as a double episode right off the bat, then introduced Mae killing Indara.

I had so much fun watching it that it's beyond me how people can see watching this show as "suffering". Especially how disrespectful that is to people who have actually suffered in their past or are suffering right now on Earth. If you would ask them, the writing of a Star Wars show would be the least of their problems.

The whole seires for me was just bizzare, sol just determined to take children away from there parents for some unknown reason what is the point of the twins why were they made? What was the whole acending supposed to be about? The whole series i was just scratching my head thinking what is the point of this? The twins actors children and teenages for me were just very poor actors. The constant zig zagging of may being good then bad then good, osha being good and then all of a sudden shes now a sith? Sol killed a witch who was clearly evil, who was turning into some kind of ghost about to disintegrate may, surely he did his job as a jedi, but he's made to look like a bad guy? Makes no sense, trinity seemed quite cool yet she gets killed off in the first 5 mins? The sith stranger with the mask forgot his name but he was a hightlight for me. A cool new take on a sith that I'm here for, I'm always open for new things and I watched the whole show but this didn't land for me, again I come back to what is the point of the twins, so there basicly like anakain, he was to bring balance to the force. Which he eventually did, what are these twins supposed to do they can't decide if there good or bad depending what day it is.

Sol didn't kill a "clearly evil witch who was disintegrating Mae."
Sol killed a mother who was using her force magic to protect her daughter.
Sol was wrong. That was literally the entire story. Sol was wrong and his insistence in doubling down on his wrongness created so many issues and deaths.

Sol murdered her before we got to see what would happen.

Was Aniseya turning into a smoke demon and disintegrating Mae, or was she just transporting her and Mae from danger? The fact that there's disagreement shows a failure in the show's writing and directing.

7:29 what wouldn’t want to have happen for a season 2 is what happened to the story in The Mandalorian season 3 where the main characters were already know, end up taking over the story, and the story veers away from the personal story and into a story that focuses too much on trying to set up The Last Jedi and other stories we already know. That said, if season 2 is good, and it changes the focus on to how the Sith are manipulating the Jedi setting up The Phantom Menace and The Skywalker Saga, I’m here for it, and will love it if it’s good.

The Jedi didn't just assume. They sensed the dark side in these witches and YES, the witches were indeed using some aspects of the dark side power. It doesn't mean they were evil. It meant their culture didn't recognize the inherent dangers of using the Force with the passions. But the Jedi there went way overboard in their reaction, due to not knowing how to handle a vengeance, legitimate concerns about how the girls were made, reasonable but ignorant concerns about the well being of the kids, and Sol's feeling of a connection to Osha. The Jedi made mistakes, but they were not totally the only fault here.
