I use Instacart (which is an American company that does your shopping and delivers your groceries). I tip high, because I understand that it's a miserable job and rents are high. A lot of the delivery people fit the job in between retail jobs, or restaurant work, or college studies. You can't earn enough to live on. It's a work supplement, not a full job.
I live in a small West Country town and I have never seen Deliveroo here but I will not use Dominos on principle because the miserable wages for their drivers 'up to £12 an hour'. The drivers have to provide, fuel, tax and insure their own car on this. If you value the car mileage at the niggardly HMRC recommendation of 45p an hour, which has not been revised for 15 years, half their wages are swallowed up keeping their car on the road.

As someone approaching retirement, I find the suggestion that I should find work to make ends meet to be very insulting. Theyve moved the retirement age further away as we get closer to it and then suggest we have to carry on working to be able to keep things together after a whole life time of work!! I feel utterly betrayed, Ive never been unemployed and saved in my pension all the way through. When do I get to enjoy retirement? Am I to expect to live in poverty if I do retire? This country no longer works for workers!
This isn't going to be a popular statement but the problem is, the entire time your generation have been working you've not been paying enough NI to support the state pension. For years successive governments have known that the NI rates weren't sufficient to fund retirement, but no one dared to put it up by enough to fund it because people kept voting for short termism and governments that promised low taxes. People in their 50's and 60's have had the the advantage throughout their working life of not paying enough into the system to support it, but now that they are getting close to retirement they want the system to support them, basically passing the bill onto younger generations. You can't have it both ways. You either support a low tax, low support system or you support a high tax high support system. What you can't do is support a low tax, low support system while you are working and then expect it to switch once you retire.
Being in this age range most of my contemporaries that have stopped working have done because they've run out of patience with poor quality workplaces. Solving the same problems for 50 years does take its toll, workplace culture is dire...thats why they leave as soon as they can afford to.

I'm in my 40s with three forms of the arthritis, and a powered wheelchair user. I couldn't do any of the work mentioned in this video. Moreover, I know many employers in the UK would be less likely to employ me than a fit person. When I was a senior chef, we were told by the senior management to bin the applications of people with chronic illnesses. In fact, when I was let go due to sickness, they offered work that they knew I couldn't do.
@davekelley4076 I was outlining how the current government put policies in place that they don't understand. Moreover, getting older people back to work is part of the government's doomed idea of returning people like me to work with chronic illnesses. So, yes, this is not solely about me or you, but it does affect me. Honestly, do you think a person who does strenuous physical labour for 30-plus years will likely be able to ride a bike for hours at a time delivering food during their golden years? But more importantly, haven't they earned the choice of when to retire, or is that only for the politicians and the like?
Can you explain to me James why (in most recent examples) when you have senior members of government on the program, or the prime minister that only Nick Ferrari seems to be able to interview them? The questions are not nearly as tough as they need to be which frustrates viewers who want to see these policies challenged.
When was the last time a senior Tory was interviewed by Channel 4? Quite a while ago now. They do not like tough interviews were they are held to account. Look at little Rishi, simple question and he got all petulant.

From my experience, the 'flexible working arrangements' very rarely provide any flexibility for the person actually doing the work. Like zero hours contracts, they just provide no control over how and when you work, while paying as little as possible, if even that!

Jobs in the service sector are seen as stepping stone, to a " proper job" or a way to top up low income. Not valued and respected. As a 50 something librarian ( hundreds of libraries were closed down by Cameron Coalition) looking for work right now. Its a real conundrum. After four hours Winston is dripping in sweat, desperately trying to feed his family so he soldiers on, pedalling like mad trying to earn enough to pay the bills and feed the kids. After seven hour he is exhausted, he feels like an elephant is sitting on his chest, he sits on the kerb and a kind stranger asks if he is OK. The reason the over 50's are struggling is that they haven't paid enough tax. The UK tax rate is consistently below the average for OECD countries and this has resulted in the support systems that people rely on in times of need, or as they get older, being inadequate or non-existent. You don't really even have a boss working for Deliveroo. You show up, and if you're lucky, Rider Support will have on hand someone who listens. Communication borders on non-existent.
No worries we the tax payer will feed his kids, just like the millions who are on the dole 😒
Or Royalty, MP's, etc!
Richie's advice yesterday, to people who can't afford to pay their mortgage this month, to increase the length of it (up to 37 years) "that'll make it cheeper". Is another prime example of how much of a clue they have
They want to stretch your mortgage so thin, you're effectively renting it off the bank rather than owning it 🙁
They like to lecture other people on budgeting skills but appear to the lack the skills, them themselves. Accept if it is for, there own nest linings. We are all the undeserving poor are we?
Over 50s are indeed delivering meals as well as driving cabs so the subsistence floor has been achieved by 13 years of Tory rule. When are voters going to make the connection between record company profits and low wages subsidised by universal credit.
Universal credit ? you might get an extra tenner if youre lucky.
Do you think if wages were raised they would keep on as many staff or just automate me out.
speaking as someone who worked until 65 I really don't see a problem with asking over 50s to find and take available work.
Britain is probably the only country in the world that would find the above statement morally wrong.
I suspect that Mr. Stride was sending a coded to message to a lot of Tory MPs who are over 50 and who will be looking for new gainful employment after the next election
😂😂😂
As Norman Tebbit said. On your bike 🤣🤣
There will be some movers in need of someone to move a piano or two.
Very upscale yob I am sure.
The tories have gone nuts
"The people who expect you to work until you're 70, are the same people who wont give you a job over age 50"
My bank has a radio ad on your own LBC that says "Trying to cut down on expenses, check for subscriptions you're not using and cancel them." Job done - thanks. You fixed the cost of living crisis, mate.
Not entirely sure where you're getting it from that there isn't the same job snobbery in America. The amount of times servers are told to "get real jobs" over there is astounding.
@@stephjsinclair Absolutely. In some ways they're even worse than us!
And when the servers go get real jobs, and there's no one to serve food in the restaurants, we learn that "no one wants to work."
@@nancypine9952 Apparently the usual policy for cashiers in supermarkets and retail is that they have to stand up for their entire shift!! 😱
@@TheRogueDM Well, yes, but what does that have to do with what I said?
"AOC was a bartender once!"
I normally never agree with James O’Brian but I do on this however, it is not just the Tories though. Labour are the same. Most politicians seem to live the bubble and make noises about doing something and then do nothing
I can't wait to see a Tory MP bringing my Deliveroo round on his bike when they lose their seats in the next 12 months or so!
😂👍
No way would they get a tip.
@@stevebinning977 Probably would not last long enough doing it to get the chance 😂
You've got no chance but nice thought 🤔🤣
I wish my 59 year old body could get on a Bike again
Arthritis and Fibromyalgia had other Plans
Fibromyalgia …. That old chestnut 😂
@@justsayin397 You wouldn’t be laughing if you had it
You are cruel
@@justsayin397 if you really are a woman then you have a very high chance of developing it yourself when you are my age. Then let’s see if you think having Fibromyalgia is so amusing then.
@@Treehugging_Leftie no I certainly wouldn’t be laughing if I had it … not like a lot of people who pretend to have it so they can sign on the sick and get benefits for life. It’s the new “bad back” didn’t you know!
@@Treehugging_LeftieIt's a hideous condition to have sadly. A friend of mine took their life due to this unforgiving illness only a few months ago. Devastating.
Ageism is the issue in our jobs market, and as one of your callers said most of the jobs available require physical strength. they are not interested in your life experience or career skills. they want grunts who do the job without questioning and are willing to do them on low pay.
I’m over 50 and love this. Keep your brain and body healthy
Imagine being able to pay a mortgage and a couple of kids with only one income earner. NO YOUNG PERSON TODAY HAS ANY IDEA OF WHAT THE FARK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
I just came back from France having lived there for two years. Their supermarkets are more expensive, truth be known. It’s not Brexit.
The reason over 50,s are struggling us because they have been taxed into poverty
The reason the over 50's are struggling is that they haven't paid enough tax. The UK tax rate is consistently below the average for OECD countries and this has resulted in the support systems that people rely on in times of need, or as they get older, being inadequate or non-existent. You can't underpay on taxes for 40 years and expect the system to be there for you when you need it. I know everyone feels like they pay too much tax but the facts are that UK residents, on average, pay less tax than residents of similar countries.
What about ppl that do not drive?
If you are in your sixties and have retired early and living off of your savings. What the F..k is it do with this government. Some people choose to work until they are 70 some people choose to retire early. Its part of living in a democracy!
Well said, you are so right, it hasn't got f all to do with them.
I absolutely hate these barstools and not one of them has ever done a back breaking days work in their lives 😡
It's what Tories do. They love to pretend we're "all in it together" for the tough times and hard work, but are " 'rugged' individualists" when they justify hogging all the rewards...
Get on your bike ! How can these people not do consultancy work for £600 an hour as a second job.
My local supermaket, Asda, recently rebranded their "value" range, except they also re-priced them at more than double their original price, but, somehow it's the fault of the suppliers.
Heya..I was an employment advisor in London for over 6 years and honestly I saw so many people (most British) who would turn thier nose up at gig work/low paid jobs and then when non Brits take the jobs and progress, the British people get mad. Maybe older people should consider Deliveroo or similar for a job. Was also a debt advisor and saw some shockingly poor financial decision made by those on a low income🤷🏻♀️
Perhaps they should only consider doing this only after those who suggested this have a go for a month themselves..
At 55👴 I took a job in garden maintenance for a housing association 🏘️.Age is not a factor
Maybe if Britain got totally changed in WW2, like the rest of Europe, the class system may have been broken up. Just a thought 🤔
...barely...room for improvement...
We r in the position that this country is in because of Tony Blair
Just continually trolling maybe get rid of the golden parachute for MPs and hear them squeal...
I love how James insults every man and his dog for being insulting. Combat journalism, cage fighting for the physically challenged and mentally astute. According to the TV programme Tomorrow’s World we would all be retired by age forty putting our feet up. The Tories .. and Labour, under Starmer, won’t be happy until we’re all rummaging through skips. Remind me, what did we vote for?
When polititians crow how much they are doing to help people back into work what they mean is they are doing all they can to remove choice even if you are ill, disabled, struggling mentally or just old. Meanwhile they game the system with unearned income, expense claims, tax breaks and back handers.
Nobody is as qualified as James for not being in touch with reality.
Love James so much ❤️
Thank you James...!!!!!
All the talk about working depends as per the lady on how physically able you are , I myself have a number of old injuries and couldn’t work even if I wanted to (which I don’t ).
The reality is, there are lots of over 50's who do work in these sectors.
Sometimes people do things without the obvious being stated to them.
In Australia we’ve been asked/told to sell our houses so young people can have them.
How will they enforce this?
They're suggesting that here in Ireland too, so I've a house on a quarter of an acre, it's would sell for about 400000euro but if I was to try buy another house smaller then what I have I'd have to remortgage as there's nothing below that in my area, but yet I've asked could I build a 2 bed bungalow on the site for under 200000euro and been told no way
@@johnnorth1961That’s when ppl just want to bang their head against a wall, because the upside of that is it’s great when you stop. Bureaucracy is soooo hard to understand. Now where is that wall?
In Canada, they get offered suicide as an option.
Cos young people, who can't afford a house are going to buy them and not landlords looking to expand their portfolio.. 🤔
I'm 58 and epileptic - Deliveroo?

I'm an American. I feel for my transatlantic cousins going through more or less the same dire situation as many of us here are doing (I'm retired, but struggling on the social security (= UK state pension) payment. Even though I get 2X the average social security recipient --due to the way higher incomes qualify here- I'm tapping into my meager savings fast due to inflation. This global 'capitalism' is reaching its natural end, and I'm glad I wont be around to see its inevitable Mad Max world consequences. And for all the conservatives (read Republicans in the US), remember, FDR (a member of elite society) was the President who recognized this fact during the depression... his 'New Deal' saved capitalism, even though he was vilified by his own class/party at the time. Subsequent US administrations (including the Democrats) have been dismantleing the it for the last 80 years. This is an age of serf-dom, but this time at least we have the internet and social media to control us instead of the Lord's thugs. smh
I think that a reasonable question from interviewers of politicians these days would be: "Are you serious?"
