James O'Brien wonders if Suella Braverman is 'actually evil' | LBC

  • Suella Braverman has indicated she would like to 'ban tents,' to avoid problems facing cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Home Secretary has drawn criticism for claiming that rough sleeping is 'often a lifestyle choice'. Reacting to her comments, James O'Brien explores reasons why it might actually be 'Tory policies' that are the issue, rather than homeless people themselves.

During that time I got to know some of that population quite well. They considered that place a sanctuary. Becoming homeless can be as simple as being a single person (mostly males) that becomes unemployed, and going on benefits, while in private rental accommodation, and then your landlord decides to sell up and serves a section 21 notice. Most landlords still won't take tenants on benefits, even if you have glowing references and have never missed a rent payment. Or if they do, they will request the whole 6/12 months rent upfront, and very few renters can afford that. The councils are so underfunded, and there are so few council houses/flats, they can only help people on their priority list (e.g. women with kids, and those with protected characteristics). I came so close to becoming homeless myself a few years ago, when this happened to me. I was one of the lucky ones, who the council could help, then only because I found a job out of the area, and they were able to pay the deposit on a property for me. Even they couldn't help find a flat locally for me, that would take benefit tenants.

Thatcher sold off the council houses and the money made wasn't allowed to go to building more. This is when i first started to see homeless people in London. Also sixteen year old s not allowed housing benefit . Escaping abusive families meant sleeing on the streets.....it all starts with Thatcher

It's always the same with her type they say we shouldn't be looking after aslyum seekers we need to look after our own. Then when it comes to our own, they want to confiscate tents and criminalise charities helping out our own. Sick to death of the sadistic and malicious Braverman and her constant attacks on some of the most vulnerable in society. She ought to try living on the streets for a month or two.
A year with nothing but the benefit you're allowed.
Let her experience for herself what it feels like to be physically and verbally abused.
Let her experience for herself how painful the cold can be.
Let her experience what it feels like to never be really warm, never really dry and never really rested because the police constantly move you on but never actually tell you where to move on to.
Let her experience for herself what it feels like to be hungry and how it eventually makes you ill.
    .
Yeah. I wish I was homeless again.
I do miss being invisible to those who think you're just scrounging money for drugs or alcohol and not being invisible to those who want to abuse you for fun.

How evil do you have to be to ban tents? You need to be just evil enough to ban tents. Truly ghastly person who will get additional support from ghastly people on this. She highly likely have increased her support within her party with this and this is the only thing she is aiming for. Not that her party should win the next election or keep as many seats as possible, not solving the homeless problem or any of the issues she has been using as props for her evil show. She is aiming to enhance her personal support with the membership of her party. If Sunak is to be replaced after the next election, it is very likely that she will become her party's leader, based on her pretentions of callousness.

That's the plan for reinvigorating Brexit Britain: we rival China by filling the workhouses with cheap labour. Why should a nine-year-old take up a place at a primary school once their fingers are nimble enough to assemble an iPhone? We can shrink class sizes, reduce the education budget, replace a proportion of school meals with bowls of gruel and increase GDP all with one simple policy.

As a U.S. American, it never ceases to amaze me how incredibly similar our politics remain to UK (formerly British, English) politics…I was truly hoping we would finally have a divergence similar to that of 1776 when the Brexit thing passed, but no. Trump was elected after all. 🤮…I truly adore the fact that technology allows this 53 year old midwestern housewife to know, without a doubt, that I am not alone on a raft with just my few friends within a sea of wretchedly cruel thinking people who are seemingly completely lacking in empathy. Suella opines that the numbers living on the streets in the US has allowed to become a problem because they have not been dealt with firmly enough. She is, of course, way out in her analysis. The US is even more heartless than the UK in helping those who need it, but not to worry, Suella is working to match them. The irony is that the two nations that most warmly embraced neo-liberalism are the two developed nations with the biggest homelessness problems. Aping a basket case like the US that cares so little for its citizens is unwise, but has been the way of running a country most envied by UK governments, and most specifically by the Tories.
