I still laugh at Royalists who say tourists come to the country because of the Royal family. First of all France has more tourism than the UK and they're a republic. Second of all how does that even make sense, its not like tourists in general can meet the king. Third of all, if you got rid of the Royal family, tourists can still visit the palaces formally owned by the royal family.

I phoned, they were very harsh & rude & threatened them with reporting him to the press! Next day scaffolding went up & 2 days later a new boiler fitted! Disband the Monarchy!

The contractor said they do this for insurance fraud

I am not popular with family for my opinions, and this is one of the reasons - I cannot wrap my head around the sheer absurdity of having a monarchy. They are just people, same as us, yet they are revered and celebrated for simply existing. The same people who whine about asylum seekers getting £30 a week dont ever begrudge the royal family their undeserved millions. I wish them no harm, its just time to move on as a nation.

Pick any city in the world, it literally doesn't matter which one or where it is. (if you find one that doesn't fit, please tell me, I've genuinely been looking forever) Look at the number of homes that are sitting long-term empty, as in ready-to-live-in-housing that has been unoccupied for 1 year +... then look up the number of homeless people in that city. You will get some insane ratio of houses per homeless person, you could give every single homeless person multiple empty houses. When you get to lower quality stuff that could be easily converted, old office buildings etc, there's WAY more available. There are enough homes for everyone, it's just that a bunch of extremely rich people are hoarding them as investments. Homelessness is an extremely solvable problem, it just involves rich people having to give up some of their wealth... hence why it will never be solved without some sort of overwhelming demand for action.

I’m not even British and I am as disgusted, astounded and offended as James O’Brien is about the king and his son and other royals extracting rents from public governmental assets and goods. I lived in London a while back and one of the things shocked me the most and still remember deeply to this date is that when you looked at the listings for home, real estate sales most were listed as “leases”. You actually could not purchase the property, one could only lease it for 99 years or so because the real owner of the land was the British monarchy, and these were not just a few cases, they were most of them. Just a crazy concept for me, that the Monarchy was a landlord in a massive and shameless scale in London in the 21st century.
Unfortunately the lack of land up north is meaning more and more leasehold new builds. The land being owned by the developers. And we aren’t talking apartments. Houses.

The Government is ok with these payments because they take all of the Kings income through the SOVEREIGN GRANT SYSTEM. The Sovereign Grant means the monarch hands over ALL their income for the year and get roughly 10% back. Pipe up when you're paying 90% tax, until then be quiet.

I watched a bit of a programme where Prince William was talking about ending homelessness,his uncle stays in a 75 roomed house,another in a forty roomed house,he himself has access to multiple mansions etc,etc,what a scam,what a scandal and somehow people clap and cheer for them, pensioners loose their heating allowance while charlie gets an increase of 45 million.clap and cheer .
Pick any city in the world, it literally doesn't matter which one or where it is. (if you find one that doesn't fit, please tell me, I've genuinely been looking forever)
Look at the number of homes that are sitting long-term empty, as in ready-to-live-in-housing that has been unoccupied for 1 year +... then look up the number of homeless people in that city.
You will get some insane ratio of houses per homeless person, you could give every single homeless person multiple empty houses.
When you get to lower quality stuff that could be easily converted, old office buildings etc, there's WAY more available.
There are enough homes for everyone, it's just that a bunch of extremely rich people are hoarding them as investments. Homelessness is an extremely solvable problem, it just involves rich people having to give up some of their wealth... hence why it will never be solved without some sort of overwhelming demand for action.

I’m not even British and I am as disgusted, astounded and offended as James O’Brien is about the king and his son and other royals extracting rents from public governmental assets and goods.
I lived in London a while back and one of the things shocked me the most and still remember deeply to this date is that when you looked at the listings for home, real estate sales most were listed as “leases”. You actually could not purchase the property, one could only lease it for 99 years or so because the real owner of the land was the British monarchy, and these were not just a few cases, they were most of them. Just a crazy concept for me, that the Monarchy was a landlord in a massive and shameless scale in London in the 21st century.
Unfortunately the lack of land up north is meaning more and more leasehold new builds. The land being owned by the developers. And we aren’t talking apartments. Houses.

@jamesbowring. We are in extreme distress. In this mood we hit upon the most accessible target : the degree of responsibility doesn’t seem to matter. It has happened throughout History. We should think carefully before making any radical move. This is no time to split the country. And btw - I have no actual reverence for Monarchy.
Don't forget Boris Johnson when running to be Prime Minister, stated that 'the Royal family can do no wrong' , so it's obvious that the 'establishment' is OK with these payments !

The Government is ok with these payments because they take all of the Kings income through the SOVEREIGN GRANT SYSTEM.
The Sovereign Grant means the monarch hands over ALL their income for the year and get roughly 10% back.
Pipe up when you're paying 90% tax, until then be quiet.

@christopherhills. The struggling families are the responsibility of the government. They are being exploited every day by a multitude of capitalists- whose names they do not know. But then they aren’t “out there”. In theory the Monarch sits at the top in order to repel potential dictators with unlimited powers (we went through all this in the School Debating Society) . If the Monarchy goes its assets could be taken over by a consortium of the richest and most powerful. Or one of our governments who cannot be trusted with the money they’ve already got.

Agreed. The latest polls earlier this year showed that approximately 65% of Canadians want Canada to dump the Monarchy. Since we don’t hear that much about them anyway, most Canadians don’t care about them. It’s past time for Canada to become a republic. (My English dad told me years ago that the Royal Family is a hard as nails, ruthless bunch and I have no doubt he was right.)
And they dint pay capital gains taxes on any of it nor inheritance taxes. So much for the myth of the family not living off taxpayer funds.
