In most videos where Jeff talks about the upright row he addresses this very fix and basicaly says it isn't enough to make it safe. (though that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't its just is what Jeff says) but I think you're better off doing facepulls and dumbbell highpulls where your hands stay above the elbows.

JC actually stated in an UR Video that he would recommend that exercise with dumbells, so you dont have such a high amount of Tension in your wrist. This is actually something i really missed in that Video. Many ppl complain about wristpain while performing the UR bc of the unusual Position of the wrist in that movement. Well at least he shows a wider grip which mostly nobody uses in my gym would help out a Little bit.

King Duder Dr. Istratel still rows way higher than what our boy Jeff Nippard even recommends. Everyone’s biomechanics are different and you shouldn’t hold Jeff Cavaliers words to a higher standard than what the empirical evidence for upright rows point towards... Even more so, Jeff Cavalier is all about the athletic component of exercise. It really shouldn’t be compared to the bodybuilding component of Jeff Nippard.

Spot on. Just to add/reinforce some points, barbell upright rows get a bad wrap b/c they force the shoulder into significant internal rotation and subsequent impingement like you mentioned. The low cable upright row can replace the barball, and can be modified by simly backing away from the cable as necessary to reduce the amount of internal rotation, and thus the chance of impingement. A good test is to raise each elbow to shoulder height with the elbow bent to 90 degrees (like you are waving to someone) and then internally rotate the arm by lowering the palm to the ground. Once you reach some resistance, that is the max amount of internal rotation you should reach when using weight. Anything more and you are forcing your shoulder past it's usable range of motion and opening yourself up to injury.

I tore my left rotator cuff in 2016 from shoulder presses. After some p.t. i was able to get back into directly working out the shoulders, but i doubt I'll ever be able to lift heavy overhead again, as i do still get some pain and discomfort sometimes. This doesnt mean that shoulder growth had to stop, though. I do wider grip upright rows, lateral raises, facepulls, arnold press, and even shoulder press, just with lower weight. Great content!

Jeff, I wanna thank you so much for showing the upright cable version (standing). The many reasons why:
    1. I usually suffer from front delt pain, so could never upright row. Last night in the gym I did 6 sets of incline bench press (strong front delt involvement), then 4 sets of this upright row. Zero front delt pain. Nothing! Unbelievable.
    2. I have posture issues (hence the shoulder impingement), and I happen to find your version of the cable standing upright row better than a face-pull for fixing this. After I was done with the 4 sets, I couldn't round my shoulders even if I tried! (That only lasted a few hours, but hey, practice makes perfect!). I find that face pulls are so technique-intensive to be performed well that every time I do them, I feel bad about myself because I know for each set, a couple of reps were sub-par. Call me nitpicky or a perfectionist, but that's just who I am. However, this cable upright row forces you into correct posture, I love it!
    3. I have a minimalist approach to lifting and am trying to fill my routine with only compound movements for the next few months. The only muscles I couldn't find compound movements for were the side delts, and now the hamstrings (apart from deadlifting, which I also did last night).
    4. Before anyone tries to educate me on how isolation and accessory movements are essential, I agree. However, I also do boxing, and will add Judo in June to my routine, so I need my lifting sessions to be as short as humanly possible.
    5. This channel and Athlean-X have changed my life forever. I love both Jeffs so much #nohomo #amnotastalker XD!!!!

Just a suggestion about the Technique Tuesday series. Whenever I see one of your new videos with a title like “How to Fix the Upright Row” or whatever, I have to stop and wonder what it’s all about. Generally, I click the video and as soon as it plays, I realize, “Oh yeah, today is Tuesday.”
I would like to see more clear branding in the thumbnail or the title that tells me right away, this is Technique Tuesday. That way I would think, “Hey, this is the brand new Technique Tuesday video you’ve been waiting for all week. You should probably watch it!” And it would get me more excited.

Ryan Searle it’s a fair suggestion but it would kill my video views. In order to reach a larger audience I need to hit non subscribers (just the way it is) and the only way to hit them is to title the video generically since they have no idea what “Technique Tuesday” means and it doesn’t sound very engaging even if they did. I’m always trying to reach new people with these vids while still giving my subs what they want.

For those commenting on Jeff cavaliers views on this: he is more focused on being athletic for sports, which injury prevention is much more important because on top of lifting there are also injury risks involved in the sport. Bodybuilding needs muscular development all over. Also he suggested a way to reduce the injury risk if you are still going to do it. He also says that deadlifts can cause injury but still advocates doing them(correctly)
Also, the clean and jerk involves the high pull which is very similar to the upright row, but it is fairly low on shoulder impingement rates
This isn’t an evil movement unless you are prone to/already have a shoulder problem/impingement

Great video as always Jeff! Currently enjoy doing upright rows with an ez bar but after watching this video definitely want to try the single dumbbell upright row.

My Favorite Variation is where you set an incline bench at 75 degrees and lean on it it feels more natural and way more stable.

I’ve always used a y motion using dumbbells instead of a bar. I would y out following the chest fibers direction towards the humerus. With a bar your hands are locked in place but the rope and cable is an excellent option vs dumbbell but I probably won’t lay down. I think I can do that standing up.

Just tried it in the gym with the barbell, sharp pain the shoulder. Only ropes works and halfreps in the smith. Which feels quite good actually.

Where was this video and the rest of Technique Tuesday seven years ago when I was a freshman being told by seniors in the gym to raise my elbows higher during upright rows? Over the years I've obviously corrected most, if not all, if there incorrect things that I was told, but it would've been nice to have all of this info at the start of my lifting career.

Did not know about the grip width! Thank you! And I think I might be bringing my elbows up too high so I am going to try these modifications later this week :)

If you got only 2 shoulder exercises -
    1. OHP
But on second place- Side Raises or upright rows?

The single arm kneeling upright dumbbell row is another alternative to the single arm dumbbell row, except it involves more core stability and activation, as well as internal/external obliques. Hope this helps guys!
