Discord vs Facebook Groups: Which is best for a community? Facebook obviously wins on number of users and it is likely that Facebook users are already a member of multiple groups. However it is my view (and a lot of others) that Discord has so much more to offer. I believe what we are really comparing is convenience vs functionality!
Discord gives a level of organisation and focus to conversations that simply is not possible in Facebook. It also allows control over different levels of access to the group/server, so it is not an all or nothing question. Discord also incorporates features like those of Zoom and Clubhouse, whilst making them an integral part of the community experiences.

I used many platforms for group communication. Nothing beats Discord. The underlying technology is great, everything works very well and the features for segmentation and permissions are fantastic. I like especially the customizability and snappiness of the software. The learning curve is a bit steep but the time and efforts invested are worth the result.

Thanks for this video. Intentionality seems to be the healthiest principle when it comes to tech use.

I agree with what you say, but I also highly disagree. I guess I am conflicted. The thing with Facebook is there is a post, and people can have a full discussion on the topic. For example, on Facebook I can make a post that says, "I like Fruity Pebbles." People can reply to it, we can talk about it. In Discord, if I say that, some people might ignore it, and it will never be seen again. You would have to do a lot of scrolling up to find it. If you find it, and reply to it, it will be out of context because the chat has already moved along.

Discord does have a thread ability however it is a rarely used to the point where many people don't know it's a thing

@@_tw300 I was going to say the same about threads and that unfortunately it's not used much

there is a feature in discord called forums. It works similar to facebook groups, you make a post, people can open that post and discuss regarding that.

What a lousy name for a community platform. That's a hurdle when I propose using the platform for a group that wants to have the opposite of discord.

Discord reminds me too much of Slack, which I hate using. But I haven't used Discord much so maybe I'm wrong. I would like an alternative to Facebook though.

I was a bit reluctant to try Discord as I had the idea that it was only for gamers. Then I joined a discord community and had a bad initial impression, which only compounded my reluctance! One thing to bear in mind is that each community will be different - Discord is just the platform, the experience will be a function of how the individual communities you are a member of. I now realise how great they are as a replacement for FB groups and if I had to give only one reason for that it would be organisation.... it allows you to improve the organisation of conversation threads which will lead to a better experience and engagement for community members.

If you don't like how discord works and want an alternative to facebook, you could use mighty networks for example. It comes with a price tag but maybe it's more of what you are looking for.
