i think the 101 airborne is called the Screaming Eagle. they flew the Bell Huey from Long Binh border our F-100 fighter AF base Bien Hoa AB in 1965-1971.

It's right next to Fort Bragg North Carolina home of the 18th airborne corps, 82nd airborne division, Special operations group.
I was stationed at Fort Bragg. April 1975 I had to sleep on an M16 Pope Air Force Base

Some grand memories of mass tactical Hollywood drops over Ft. Campbell from C-130s and a few from C-141s. A mass drop on Ft. Devens from C-130s. These new parachutes appear to fall slower than those I jumped.

John, you're probably aware of one case. On February 12, 1988, the American missile cruiser Yorktown and the destroyer Caron shamefully escaped from Soviet territorial waters from the SKR patrol ship Bezzavetny and the SKR-6 patrol ship after Soviet sailors carried out a "bulk" on large and much larger powerful American ships that violated the state border of the USSR and did not respond to orders and warnings from Soviet guards. Not a ram, but a bulk - they approached at an angle of 30 degrees and walked along the side, breaking superstructures, demolishing lifelines and Harpoon launchers. At the same time, our ships had several times lower side height, but the commanders were the highest professional masters.

what a change in the type of aircraft from C141 to C17 back in 1977-1986 at Travis AFB CA! i was the phase dock #1 engine crew chief on C141 and later the squadron OJT for the 349th FMS at Travis AFB. it also includes the giant C5A the mainstay to present times. C5A Galaxy is to the B52 for the USAF that can fly beyond its limited usefulness. most of my 5 years in active AF were the F-100 and C-130A&B model during the VietNam era 1965-1971. what an adventure as part of the world's greatest air aviation experiences!

@ Robert Chow NEVER liked the C141 and absolutely HATED jumping out of it due to the turbulence and my parachute not opening properly. always preferred the C130 because I was always in perfect position exiting the aircraft and never got my risers tangled up as with the C141. of course, it could have been the CHINOOK WINDS out of Alaska that were the REAL PROBLEM and NOT the aircraft! really do miss dropping in to 3 to 6 feet of SNOW! ;-}}

So two things going on. I am absolutely floored by the commitment to safety at ever step of the way. The sergeant checking every strap. the buddy check on the plane. The guys checking the rip cord line. top notch. Great training.
Its all impressive, but the problems is that it's last years war. Static front wars that need paratroopers don't exist anymore.
What's needed is urban warfare, counter terrorism and peace keeping.
If we are spending all this money, we have to fight the next battle not the last one.

So you are saying there is NEVER a situation these days where paratroopers could come into play? I think not. They may not be as cutting edge as during WW2, but I can see plenty of situations where they are useful in war even today. Remember, they will often jump 15-20 miles away, then force march to the objective. They do that in training as well. If they can resupply with an Airborne operation, there is a great chance they can also reinforce with paratroopers.
Better to have paratroops if you need, them than need them and not have them ready to go on a moments notice.

Все хотел сфотографироваться в Манасе на фоне "Гэлэкси" - но или я был редко или таких самолетов не было, но вспоминаю как на рыбалке на Ала Арчинском ВДХР - прямо над головой пролетал "Геркулес" очень низко даже было видно надпись "NAVY" на борту !
