I was a Jarhead, Artillery....but I gotta say I have absolute respect for the US Army Airborne.
The Marines preferred invasion route is from the sea, but a massive assault from the air is pure bad assery, equipment and all, unreal.
We trained at a few Army bases, once or twice at Bragg.
Driving around their base I would see gun park after gun park filled with M-198, 155MM Howitzers. I looked over at my Marine buddy and asked, “are they dropping those guns out the back of F’n airplanes?”
He said “I think so dude.”
I thought....Holy shit. We have enough trouble just pulling them with our trucks.
A high school buddy of mine and West Point grad was an officer in the 75th Rangers.
He invited me to Benning once to watch a Mass Tac. They dropped in, seemed like all damn day long. Was very impressed.
One of the coolest Army cadences I ever heard:
Hey Mother Russia you better behave,
or we’ll fill your skies with Maroon Berets.
My father in law was 509th PIR Gingerbread Men.

I jumped one a few times at Bragg in the 90s. The most nerve rattling jumps I had. Night, combat equipment was INSANE! You hear the D-bags slamming against st the side with each jumper that exits. First time I heard that, I was number two jumped and honestly thought door jumper had either slammed against the aircraft or had his head taken off hitting the horizontal stabilizer (that was a story we ALL heard!). Mad respect for those men who did it into enemy territory.

My units were mostly chopper jumps, with very occasional C-130s and a rare 141. It is nothing short of ridiculous how much room there is in a C17. Many a jumpmaster walking on top of people's rucks in my day. Now a jumpmaster could ride a freeking Segway around in there if they wanted to.

I was the right door safety on this jump. I can be heard at 1:07 telling the jumper with the camera to keep eye to eye contact with the safety. The AJ was a rookie and made some minor (but not dangerous) mistakes. I'm sure he got better with experience. Everyone landed safely. This was one of many wonderful Airborne operations I participated in over my career as a Jumpmaster.

Imagine executing that on enemy soil. One moment you're a passenger, a moment later you're in a battalion ready to go. Incredible.
I notice they drop the gear bag on a tether just prior to impact, I guess to lessen their impact with the earth? Ever sustain any injuries from any drops yourself?

I received my jumpmaster wings in 1980 and after that most of my just wear as a jumpmaster. As a jumpmaster of an aircraft we grassed both sides of the door and actually hung out the aircraft on a small platform that was kicked out once the door was open. if they're still jumping from a C-130 then I'm sure jumpers have seen it. As a jumpmaster there were times that as soon as the door was open and we made our inspections we would just hang out the door until the 1 minute warning. That parachute and Reserve we're definitely not the ones we used I guess a lot has changed 35 years

I sure miss that. I Was In E co. 782 back in the 90s. Looks like there's too much room in the aircraft. Also there's the big bright round thing that you can see with. Along with those new chutes.

They are suppose to be safer but I honestly can't tell. You can't stir them at all so if you are headed to the creek at (Normandy dz I think) than you are fucked. The water is like a foot deep and it's surrounded by thorn bushes. Pretty sure Normandy also has all the catus plants too so yeah. T11 sucks because in my experience your landing will always be on something unpleasant
