I’ve gotta throw U-Gra by Nytt Land and Lyfjaberg by Wardruna out there for you to check out. Both have beautiful music videos as well. I’ll be at Red Rocks on the 5th and can‘t wait to witness Heilung perform in that setting.
The title of the song means "Father of all" and is in Old Nordic. The first invocation is towards Odin's ring. Draupnir or Draupner was the magic ring that was given to Odin by the dwarf Brok, who created it with his brother Sindre. It had the power to make eight copies of equal value every nine nights. The second invocation is to the wolves that accompany the god Odin. Geri and Freki. The translation of their names would be "ravenous and greedy" The third invocation is to Sleipnir, Odin's horse. In Scandinavian mythology, Sleipnir or Sleipner (from Old Norse: "the slippery") is an eight-legged gray horse belonging to the god. Sleipnir is mentioned in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, the latter of which was written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century. In both sources it is indicated that Sleipnir belonged to Odin, and was the son of Loki and Svaðilfari "from the Old Norse 'unfortunate traveler'" Svaðilfar is a stallion horse that begets the eight-legged horse Sleipnir with Loki (who took the form of a mare) . Svaðilfari belonged to a giant they called Hrimthurs. This giant was the one who built the walls of Asgard. Sleipnir is described as the best of horses, and is sometimes ridden by Odin in battles and even to reach the realm of death ... Hel. The Prose Edda indicates that he was gray. He was so fast that he could go from one end of the horizon to the other in a single day. Sleipnir symbolizes the eight winds that blow from their respective cardinal points. Another feature is that he had runes engraved on his teeth. The fourth invocation is for the ravens of Odin, Hugin and Munin. In Norse mythology Hugin and Munin, are a pair of ravens associated with the god Odin. Hugin and Munin traveled around the world collecting news and information for Odin. Hugin is the "thought" and Munin is the "memory." Both were sent at dawn to collect information and returned in the afternoon. They perched on the god's shoulders and whispered all the news into his ears. The spear of Odin is also named. Gungnir or Gungner was Odin's spear. The word means production of a violent tremor or shaking, as it supposedly shook anyone who was struck by it vividly. According to mythology, it was made by the sons of Ivald (the dwarves), and was given to Odin by Loki in compensation for stealing Sif's hair. Sif was the wife of the god thor. Odin launches onto the battlefield wearing a golden helmet, glowing armor, and his Gungnir spear. The word "gægogæ" appears to be a kind of magical invocation or battle cry present in a 5th century medallion / coin inscription, and is comparable to the "g͡ag͡ag͡a" of the Spear of Kragehul I, which is also believed to be a war cry or chant. I shout, shout, shout this spear. Gaegogae, Gaegogae, Gaegogae screamed loudly. The fifth invocation is to the god Odin, calling him by all the names by which he was known. Mighty of the court, the wise, the dear, the one who talks to wolves, the welcome, the pale, god of desires, inspirational, chief, red-haired, hooded, wand-bearer, famous lord, god of the hanged, wanderer of the mist, the needy, father of Yule, the tall, rider on the attack, father of all, tree of victory, father of victory, the one with the lost eye, who throws the spear, shining eye, shaking spear / shield, leader of the people, the one with knowledge, bearer of cloak, keeper of secrets, the terrible, the stormy. A hug.
@@chriswedemann8599 Only after fornyrðislag gave way to malaháttr and ljóðaháttr. The (Christian) nobility came to appreciate the more intricate Skaldic metres at the court of their kings, though fornyrðislag remained a formal metre for some time. The transition of OldNorse and fashion eventually degraded the popularity of kviðuháttr, galdralag and fornyrðislag at courts and halls. The old kennings slowly became too alien (and pagan) for the listeners and Icelandic poets were needed to sing the deeds of the kings. That's the possible reason the Proze Edda was composed by Snorri: so not to forget what was handed down through the ages. Galdralag and the other 'old' metres possibly remained popular longer on the countryside where the dawning of christianity was slower and the old (galdr!) ways were observed the longest.
Definitely a learning & sound experience in Norse/ Germanic culture & music. I'd definitely tune in to hear your comments on any Heilung song! Primal & earthy, each Heilung song has a direct connection to discovered artifacts, Edda or carved rune inscriptions.
4 years since this, and still could not believe this was their first performance live. But as the group evolves, from this summer stream from Alcatraz, could as one thing say that male lead Kai Uwe Faust has gotten even better putting more variety on his performance, which makes Heilung experience even greater than before, if possible.
I hear and see a beauty in the simplicity of this performance. I have always loved acoustic versions of songs, and that might be why I love the simplicity of this performance more than other videos Elizabeth has reacted to.
I I seen that performance... accidentally. :D I was at Castlefest with some friends, we just went towards to main stage. We didn't know about this performance we just had hear something different and powerful happening there. I'm glad that we were there in the right moment.
Comparing the warriors to zombies is actually not far from the mythology around Oðin. Half of the slain after a battle went to Valhalla, Oðin's Hall, to fight and prepare for the end of days, Ragnarök. They were called the Einherjar, and were quite actually an army of the dead, aka zombies.
That's not necessarily, wholely accurate. Of the dead warriors, the best of them where chosen by Frejya to go to her Hall, with the other half of honorable dead going with Odin to his Hall. But there were not many chosen, definitely not half the dead. A majority would've headed to Helhiem to live in the summer lands there, with the other part of their soul traveling to Helgafjell to be with their ancestors, and the third staying to guard the body after death.
@@TheCharismaticVoice I mean, they are definitely the resurrected dead, but they're conscious and brought back whole each time. Between battles they feast and enjoy all the good things life held for them, in Valhalla, the hall of the brave. Feasting, music, carousing and laughter is the order of the day there, and then they go out to fight again, and to be resurrected again if they fall. Kinda zombies, but you could have a good conversation with them in Valhalla.
@@Ahonya666 Yeah, if you read Helgevar, The Road to Hell, there's an obvious section where Helheim is described as a land of green life. The land of frost is Niflheim, the land of Mist and Frost. Only Snorri Sturllsson, a Christian Monk, hundreds of years after the christianinzing of Norway, described it as a painful or bad place. All others are good or neutral in tone.
The first time I heard Heilung it was this song. I was looking for atmospheric background music for a Nordic type setting RPG. Anyway, I listened to it like 5 times in a row in, and by the end I felt like I was almost in an induced trance.
It's a perfect song, and band, for anyone running a Norse/Pagan flavoured setting. I use them for background music a lot, along with other bands like Danheim, Munknorr, Sowulo, etc. Give them a listen if you haven't already discovered them.
there's definitely something trance-inducing about it all. the steady moderate-tempo rhythm, the incomprehensible singing -- either really low throat-singing or very long drawn-out vocals -- it feels like you're in some sort of primitive ritual.
Their sound is organic and just slowly builds. It is trance inducing and while it is a warrior song, it actually had a very secure sound to it for me. Like I'm protected. It's hard to explain.
Something akin to this is Wardruna's "Lyfjabjerg (healing-mountain)". Eight minutes but an uplifting experience. Came out in june last year and it came to be because of the sudden stop in concerts and normal life caused by the pandemic. "Healing-mountain stands for eternity - It comforts the sick and the sore - Each and every one who assails that rock - Will find their lifelong ailment cured."
Alfadhirhaiti is a compound word which translates as All-Father-Names Alfadhir is literally All-Father (a common name for Odin) so the stress should be on the first syllable of the constituent words like AL-FAdhir-HAiti It starts out with some descriptions of Odin. Dedication to the Spear and the names of his ravens Hugin and Munin (meaning Thought and Memory) And then just a long list of alternate names for Odin: Mighty Thuler, Wise one, Striver, Wolfspeaker, Welcomed one, Pale one, God of witches, Inciter, Cheiftain, Readhead, Hooded one, Wandwielder, Famous lord, God of the hanged, Nebulizer, Needed one, Yulefather, Evenhigh, Attacking rider, Allfather, Victory tree, Father of victory, One with a missing eye, God with painted shield, Flashing eye, Shieldshaker, Leader of the crowd, One with knowledge, Shaggy-cloack wielder, Guardian of secrecy, Terible one and Stormy one
Hi Elizabeth, I'm glad you're reacting to another Heilung performance. This was a very captivating song, and it was exciting to learn that this was a dedication to Odin Allfather. I'm sure you and Kirk will have a spectacular evening at their upcoming concert (I hope you do get that backstage meeting w/ Maria). Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
Those were the names of the ravens Huginn(thought) and Muninn(memory), they also mentioned Sleipnir, Odins' eight legged horse and Gungnir his spear. The main chant is a list of the many names of Odin
I was at that concert too! It was my first time to Denver, my first time to Red Rocks, and my first time seeing Heilung! I traveled by train from Buffalo and brought my bike with me. It was quite a transformational adventure. The concert was Amazing!
Really love what you do with these and the way you give each song and even branch to other genres a real genuine take and especially, as was the case with say Hurt by Johnny Cash, you dove into the meaning of the song for him and not necessarily breaking down technique. Been enjoying these for awhile now, keep up the excellent work.
Seriously! Like I love that this exists because it's such a perfect modern interpretation/example of how effective war music is! Like you can FEEL how this kind of thing would've been done to get warriors amped up for battle and intimidate the enemy. It's so cool to experience.
You and your channel are delightful af. I love how you thoughtfully analyze songs and even add little "did you know?" tidbits. You show so much genuine interest in the art of others, while humbly sitting on your own mountain of skill and ability. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Also the feels with this piece are very real. I cannot listen to it without getting emotional. Along with the intense musicality of it, there are so many ritualistic and spiritual aspects of this song that just resonate on many levels. I’m so glad to see you feeling it, too!
The relentless monotone drive of this song is the opposite of breathtaking-it’s inspiring, and they still manage to shift the dynamics without lots of melody superbly, I bust out in goosebumps five or six times every time I listen to this performance. In my more whimsical moments, I can envision these warriors getting ready to square off against something super human, like, oh, say a nest of xenomorphs from alien, going through this ritual and then just kicking ass, it’s just that energizing motivating. In more mundane moments, I think one of the comments on the original videos sums it up nicely, “everybody gangster until the woods start chanting in old Norse.”
@Freddie Krueger apparently my play on “inspiring” as one half of respiration (the other half being “expiring”) is a tad too subtle. While the best time to be pedantic would’ve been a year ago, I suppose the second best time is now.
Loved your newest Heilung video, hope to see ya dive into more Wardruna. Einar Selvik is like no other. Love your reactions and loved your interview with Maria from Heilung, that was dope!
That song is in fact an adrenalin rush. Simply epic. Great reaction and analysis as usual. ❤️💪🤩 I always feel like I learn something new about voice techniques while watching your videos. Keep the Heilung-reactions comming! 🤩
Found Heilung through watching/listenening to The Hu on my streaming music apps...absolutely LOVE them! After seeing the Hu live, I am going to have to find a show of Heilung's near me!!!
Hi Shawn, If you missed it, here is Elizabeth's reaction to The Hu, "Wolf Totem," last year: th-cam.com/video/JNx0RgQrcoM/w-d-xo.html and The Hu feat. Lzzy Hale, "Song of Women.": th-cam.com/video/rNjItcUMO7k/w-d-xo.html And Elizabeth's other videos: th-cam.com/users/TheCharismaticVoicevideos Enjoy!
I really wish I could get to one of their rituals some day. Or even better, the experimental archaeologist/re-enactor/amateur historian in me would love to be one of those warriors. For a quick, fun one, Elizabeth should have a look at Hakkerskaldyr from the same performance. If you're familiar with the Maori Haka, it has a very similar sound. Most definitely not the same thing as the Haka, but worth a listen to. The Warriors on stage play more of a role in it. As with everything Heilung, primal.
Girl,we love you!!! Much respect to you and Heilung!!!They bring out my primal nature and you make me smile with your enthusiasm!! Thank You!! Can't Wait!!🥰😈
Thanks Elizanbeth for this excellent Heilung review. You rock(!) and they really are an awesome group and I'm looking forward to seeing them in Bochum, Germany on Dec 16th :-)
This channel introduced me to Heilung. I showed my wife one of their videos and the look I got was " you are on your own buddy". It is an acquired taste apparently. Well consider it acquired.
As a Pagan,it's part of my life lol,we use it in handfasting ,baby namings etc,my work colleagues do look at me a bit weird when I play it,but they get into it
That was so friiking awesome! i have an entire genre to explore and continue my playing catchup to your reactions. I am not a singer, or musically inclined in any way. I just love good music and creativity - the ART. I am going to have fun taking a deep dive into Heilung.
Ok... so after listening to Heilung and The Hu, I think I'd be quite ready to do battle. Good grief! Such cool stuff! Guess I'm off to find some Heilung now.... Now I wish I could go to the show. Wow. Enjoy it! Thanks for the intro to another groovy group. :D
So happy to see another Heilung reaction on your channel! One of your earlier reactions to Heilung is basically how I first found your channel and why I subscribed. You're doing a wonderful job and are adding much more to these songs with your videos imho, especially comparing to the "usual reaction content" on YT. Thank you for these videos! (=
Wonderful awesomeness and breakdown as always. You asked on Insta I think, and your and Maria's Tea Time Talk is totes my favorite video, just fun and adorable and dorky. Singers talking their craft and interests. I'm so bummed I can't be home to come to the Red Rocks concert, I was hoping on it, but oh well, gotta take my vacations and trips back to the States when I can get them since I live/work overseas.
Gonna see Heilung live this year (hopefully) and I am SO. EXCITED. It's so fun to watch you getting excited - it's what I felt when I first saw this video!
When I first saw this song performed live it started off with an almost completely pitch black stage with just an overhead spotlight on the main singer. I had no idea that the warriors had joined the stage until the lights came up on them when they joined the vocals. I literally gasped, it was so awesome to experience 😁 Also, that massive drum at the back of the stage is amazing! You can feel it in your bones and through the soles of your feet, it's like the earth is beating in time to the music.
i saw this video about 2 years ago, and now just noticed you mention redrock... funny thing is: they released that very same gig on their channel to watch. on a side note: i took my daughter to their concert here in antwerp last week. she only knew one song: krigskaldir. she didnt know how they looked, or how the concert was going to be... all i can say is, more than half of the show, her jaw dropped. when we were driving home she was silent, and i did not disturb her, but the next day, she thanked me for taking her with me, and did not stop talking about heilung. lol the rest of the day she was listening to all their songs, and made me make a promise: next time they are near us, we HAVE TO go together... heilung, nice to see the recognition they are getting for being such an awesome band!!!
Check out Heilung's "Traust". Vocally its amazing. Aaaaaand.......Nytt Land. Their new album "Ritual" is beautiful. They have a live show recorded recently.
Stumbled upon them through a suggestion, and then found this album. Simply amazing, and I'm so stoked that you're reviewing them! I can't believe I haven't seen this review til now
I don't know how your channel doesn't have 10 million subs by now The way you describe what's happening and your pure joy at hearing people perform just creates pure happiness.
I absolutely love that you roll the Rs and adopt the proper accent for Freke and his brother. They both have places in my Urban Fantasy Books and anyone who does the research to get the language right has my approval!!
I love Heilung, your reactions to them have all been amazing as well. One of my favorite Tea Time Talks was with Maria, you both really connected. But... THAT LILITH STATUE! O.O
Hi William, I believe Elizabeth and Kirk are going to have group meet up before the concert. There is information on Elizabeth's TCV Discord channel under the Music Group Chats section (events-and-festivals).
I’m still waiting for a vocalist to react to Dead Can Dance. Both Brandon and Lisa have incredible voices and still going strong since the 80’s. Nierika is incredible
That would be great, but which piece? There are so many! Host of Seraphim might do. No, maybe Anabasis! Beautiful stuff. I got to see them live in Nashville few years back.
I just ran across your page and didn’t think I would like these videos. But I love how truly much you care about singing and unlike other people you can see in your face that you truly love what you are doing. Keep up the great work.glad I came across your stuff.
I think this is meant to be an invocation of Odin before a battle, so the building of it makes loads of sense. You should research Seidr while you're at it, they utilize a lot of seidr trance methods in their music, including the animal noises.
I stumbled across the full Heilung Lifa video on TH-cam about 2 years ago. Absolutely fantastic show, performance, and music. I've been a fan of theirs ever since. If you want other similar stuff check out more of Wardruna. They have a lot of great songs, including Raido, Helvegen, Kvitravn, Grá (shorter song, but powerful and it has wolves), and Lyfjaberg (more of a healing chant but still really good). Einar Selvik is really good live, and his passion comes through in his singing.
Hi Eamonn, Elizabeth already reacted to Wardruna feat. Aurora, "Helvegen," last year. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/u0GMydcmzRo/w-d-xo.html And here is a link to Elizabeth's other reaction videos: th-cam.com/users/TheCharismaticVoicevideos Enjoy!
@@kirbys1370 Thanks. I know she had done a few Wardruna songs already but couldn't remember which ones. They have a lot of other good songs I think Elizabeth would like.
I'm wearing a band shirt of heilung at the moment. I think I needed to use my tissue with that great concert in august in Belgium. Have fun there! Enjoy! And mayby you'll be in trance. Btw heavy bass alert.
This has quickly become one of my favorite channels, as a black and death metal guitarist and vocalist with roots as a cellist and classically trained singer. As an Ásátruar, it's awesome to hear invocations to Draupnir and Gungnir, Geri and Freki (both of which represent rapaciousness) Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory), Sleipnir (slippery, in the sense of being elusive), etc.
This isn't scandinavian. Most of the members are central european (German/ polish etc.) and the music is protogermanic rather than scandinavian. Altho there are exceptions. Some scandinavian elements are certainly there.
@@BigKnecht Ah okay, I only did a cursory glance at the band info. Thanks for the clarification. You're saying the band in general is doing Proto-Germanic music, and only this particular one happens to be Norse inspired?
@@TroubledTurnip yeah they take a lot of inspiration from norse runestones since centeal european barbarians weren't the best at writing shit down so there's not much to draw from. But Heilung in general is more of an idea. Vikings weren't around until like around the 10th century. This is more oriented around the 6th Century right after or even before the fall of rome and the spread of Christianity which erased a lot of pagan culture all around europe. So you can interpret the bands name "Heilung" (healing) as a concept to reintroduce people to europes spiritual and cultural roots which were violently removed a long time ago. I mean, this is the kind of shit that europeans were doing all over the continent until malevolent forces erased any history of it, which is why this feels so foreign and familiar at the same time sonce culture can't be completely erased by cultural agression. Fascinating stuff really. Sry for the incoherent rant. These are some complicated issues to think about.
@@TroubledTurnip The band is doing all kinds of stuff, from protogermanic all the way up to the viking age. Besides - scandinavians/Norse are actually germanic peoples. Treating the germanic tribes and the norse as two completely different groups of people would be wrong; that would be like separating between US americans and people from Texas (= all texans are US americans as well while not all US americans are from Texas; likewise all Norse are germanic, but not all germanic tribes are Norse). The three founding members of the band are from Germany (Kai Uwe Faust), Denmark (Christopher Juul) and Norway (Maria Franz).
@@HH-hd7nd Thank you, it’s a pleasure to learn new things within this context. What you’ve said was my general impression but without knowing the specifics. It threw me for a loop when it was said this wasn’t Scandinavian when the song is definitely referencing the names of Oden. Even so, a band doesn’t have to be 100% Scandinavian to be performing a (semi) historical Norse invocation, and to then identify the sound as such. If I played a Shamisen you’d instantly identify it with Japan whether I was Japanese or not. This is what I meant in my initial comment.
I was at RedRocks!!! It was a most amazing life changing experience! Was my second time seeing them live and .. just hail Heilung!! They will always hold a special place in my heart and life. Love the video and your appreciation for them!
@@SwordQuake2 you know the Norse were basically Germanic tribes living by the coasts? There is no clear cultural distinction between the northern tribes in today's Scandinavia and the ones that lived in today's northern and western Germany. They were all Germans. Why do you think German, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian have the same stem words for basically everything? They evolved out of the same culture.
@@SwordQuake2 they didn't but the culture that this music represents is not distinctly northern, the lyrics are in a Norse dialect but instruments and throat singing were widely spread throughout all Germanic tribes.
I just wanted to say I love that you give us your insite on our favorite music. I hope to keep watching your videos for a long time to come. Much love and appreciation 💛
Still binging previous episodes to fully appreciate all the technical insights and to get exposed to more great music. Elizabeth is such an expressive and genuine lover of music! Watching her reactions alone are worth the time spent on the TCV channel. Greatly impressed by the diversity of the musical genres and performers. So good to see the appreciation of real talent across so many styles. Had seen Heilung before and been blown away by their visceral sound. Even better now with Elizabeth's breakdown and highlights of what all is happening. Too many levels to drink in all at once. Skoal! Please consider doing some Led Zeppelin, especially Kashmir or Achilles' Last Stand. Like Black Sabbath, Zep was one of the founders of Metal and so much more. 🤘 🤘 🤘
Thank you, Mike! And yes, been considering some Led Zepplin. They're another one with some strict copyright protections, so it's gotta be timed correctly.
You should do a reaction for either Othan or Traust(or both). My two favourite(because I can't decide which one I like more) Heilung tracks and Maria's vocals are absolutely awesome in both(naturally).
Holy Crap!!! That's so cool that you are going to their show! I am going too! I've had my tickets for a year! They were supposed to play Red Rock last October, but Covid happened. So I've been waiting for what seems like forever to see this performance; I have no doubt it will live up to my expectations. The tickets are a Birthday present to myself, my B-Day is the 10th of October, so I feel like that makes it even more special for me. Anyway, I really hope I run into you there at the show! I would love to say a quick hello and thank you for all the amazing things you do to spread music appreciation and education as well as fostering such an amazing community here through your channel! Hope your experience at the show is uplifting and transcendent. ^_^
Hi Slatersan42, I believe Elizabeth and Kirk are going to have group meet up before the concert. There is information on Elizabeth's TCV Discord channel under the Music Group Chats section (events-and-festivals).
Probably my favourite chant in the whole concert, it’s really entrancing and the layers of percussion added build up to such a thick, mesmerising climax
You'll love the concert, it is a great add in your musical experience and so for your life. I hope you share your thoughts after this concert. Enjoy it !
Hello, I've just recently discovered Heilung, and then in a journey through a Heilung rabbit hole found your channel. I love how you seem so genuinely delighted by all of the various techniques you identify. I'm very eager to see more of your reactions/observations, in particularly since you've gone through a lot of Lifa already that at some point you get to Othan. Thank you for sharing these and have a great day (and Happy new year!)
I listened to this during one of my workouts to get hyped up, normally I do. But this one was different, from the beginning to the end, I didn’t feel hype. I felt fear. As If I was on the other side of the battlefield. And it rocked me to my core.
I’m excited to go to this show. I can’t wait to see them live! If you do another reaction of Heilung, Maria does sing in Traust. It would be a lovely choice for a video.
You are seeing the Shaman of the Tribe, taking the singing of the members, which are in this sense considered prayers, and weaving them together before sending them to the gods on behalf of the members. Results were expected, and sooner rather than later. Most Shamanic work is conducted in this way. Needless to say, some care must be taken to avoid problems.
I am going to be flying out there from North Carolina! Going by myself but I think everyone will be treated as brothers and sisters there regardless of how they appear!! Haven't been this excited in a long time!
Here's a different suggestion: Sabina Zweiacker, opera singer with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Bloodborn Suite and Skyrim theme always give me chills!
We just released merchandise! Check out the full line-up here: thecharismaticmerch.com

I think you would really enjoy reacting to "I will fail you" by demon hunter! Beautiful song!
I’ve gotta throw U-Gra by Nytt Land and Lyfjaberg by Wardruna out there for you to check out. Both have beautiful music videos as well. I’ll be at Red Rocks on the 5th and can‘t wait to witness Heilung perform in that setting.
You guys are going to be seeing Heilung soon, right? Hoping you enjoy them live as much as you do here! Have a drink for me, all right?
If you want to be blown away, please react to Voiceplay's Hoist the Colors. It's their best one yet!
The translation of their names would be "ravenous and greedy"
The third invocation is to Sleipnir, Odin's horse.
Mighty of the court, the wise, the dear,
the one who talks to wolves, the welcome,
the pale, god of desires, inspirational, chief,
red-haired, hooded, wand-bearer, famous lord,
god of the hanged, wanderer of the mist,
the needy, father of Yule, the tall,
rider on the attack, father of all, tree of victory,
father of victory, the one with the lost eye,
who throws the spear, shining eye,
shaking spear / shield, leader of the people,
the one with knowledge, bearer of cloak,
keeper of secrets, the terrible, the stormy.
A hug.
One major correction- the English title probably _should_ be "Names of the Allfather".
Alfadhir being "Allfather" and "Heitir" being "Names".
Thanks Nidels for the info! It's nice to know more about this piece. ❤
Well done! And every haiti is a rune, a precise way to approach Óðinn in prayer, galdr or battle. Verþù heilir sá þat kann!

That's the possible reason the Proze Edda was composed by Snorri: so not to forget what was handed down through the ages. Galdralag and the other 'old' metres possibly remained popular longer on the countryside where the dawning of christianity was slower and the old (galdr!) ways were observed the longest.
you could breakdown literally every heilung song and id watch every single one of them!
Aww, thank you Rizzle!
Me too!
Definitely a learning & sound experience in Norse/ Germanic culture & music. I'd definitely tune in to hear your comments on any Heilung song! Primal & earthy, each Heilung song has a direct connection to discovered artifacts, Edda or carved rune inscriptions.
It would be cool a Heilung Reaction series...I'd also watch all of them

If you feel something stirring, it is your blood remembering the old ways
You just feel your European ancestors in your chest and blood and veins boiling inside you it's fantastic
Native American... I agree with this.❤❤❤
This is meant to bring us all together again... write knowledge into stone or harder materials.
The old gods are calling. Will you answer their call?
oh yeah..... regards from Denmark
If Odin suddenly appeared headbanging in the crowd i wouldn't even be surprised
I imagine him banging his spear to the beat, while his birds squawk to the beat as well and his wolves start howling in excitement
;DDD
Funny enough this song is literally about Odin. It’s all his names, invocations, and items related to him
@@magnilehr1489 hah! Didn't know that:)
The crowd sucks in this song. They seem bored. If Odin himself showed up and did magic they wouldn't even react.
The biggest thing that stood out to me was Maria Franz smiling more in the Alcatraz one when compared to LIFA.
Whew. I was hoping I wasn't offending anyone with that comment.
@@variancetheeclectic8754 Oh...I didn't know they were summerlands on the freezing cold Helheim
Ok....I thought I was being weird if this song made me feel like I'm in a trance 🤣🤣
Background music? This gets me hype AF!!
I use the repeating part of this song on loop as exactly that, somrthing to bring me into trance/hightened meditation. works reeeaally well
there's definitely something trance-inducing about it all. the steady moderate-tempo rhythm, the incomprehensible singing -- either really low throat-singing or very long drawn-out vocals -- it feels like you're in some sort of primitive ritual.
Their sound is organic and just slowly builds. It is trance inducing and while it is a warrior song, it actually had a very secure sound to it for me. Like I'm protected. It's hard to explain.
No need to ry. I completely understand
i think its the feeling of being a part of something powerful, like you're invincible because you are a part of a many
The warrior is protected by their army
Something akin to this is Wardruna's "Lyfjabjerg (healing-mountain)". Eight minutes but an uplifting experience. Came out in june last year and it came to be because of the sudden stop in concerts and normal life caused by the pandemic.
"Healing-mountain stands for eternity - It comforts the sick and the sore - Each and every one who assails that rock - Will find their lifelong ailment cured."
Oooh yes Lyfjabjerg is so goood!
Also Kvitravn
Lyfjaberg is my favorite wardruna song. She needs to react to this song!
@@ThomasShelby6213 Yes!! I especially love the part at around 6 minutes in where they get really melodic. It's so pretty!
Alfadhirhaiti is a compound word which translates as All-Father-Names
Alfadhir is literally All-Father (a common name for Odin) so the stress should be on the first syllable of the constituent words like AL-FAdhir-HAiti
It starts out with some descriptions of Odin. Dedication to the Spear and the names of his ravens Hugin and Munin (meaning Thought and Memory)
And then just a long list of alternate names for Odin:
Mighty Thuler, Wise one, Striver, Wolfspeaker, Welcomed one, Pale one, God of witches, Inciter, Cheiftain, Readhead, Hooded one, Wandwielder, Famous lord, God of the hanged, Nebulizer, Needed one, Yulefather, Evenhigh, Attacking rider, Allfather, Victory tree, Father of victory, One with a missing eye, God with painted shield, Flashing eye, Shieldshaker, Leader of the crowd, One with knowledge, Shaggy-cloack wielder, Guardian of secrecy, Terible one and Stormy one
I adore Heilung! It really gets me in touch with my Germanic ancestry. Listening to one of their albums is almost a spiritual journey!
Wonderful. I know that's exactly what they're going for!
@@TheCharismaticVoice you're going to have a fantastic time at their show! Have fun!!! 🧡🧡🧡
At about 15:50 he mentions Sleipner, Odin’s eight-legged horse that was the father of the winged steeds (pegasi) ridden by the Valkyrie.
Thank you, Kirby! Yes, Kirk and I are looking forward to that concert so much, it will be quite an experience!
I repeatedly stop what I’m doing to watch your videos. Your insights, positivity, and pure joy in music is always uplifting. Thank you Elizabeth!!
Those were the names of the ravens Huginn(thought) and Muninn(memory), they also mentioned Sleipnir, Odins' eight legged horse and Gungnir his spear. The main chant is a list of the many names of Odin
everybody gangsta untill the trees start chanting in proto germanic tongues
Getting so close to the Red Rocks show! Can't wait!!!
Woooo! We can't wait to meet up!
Thank you, Aaron.
I simply love listening to you! Your dedication, nerdiness and explanations are spot on!
Looking forward to more Heilung .. my favorite group/band to listen to, especially if I need to get "psyched up" for a workout.
The thumbnail alone is epic. Love you channel.
With music like this, any warrior will get in berzerk-mode.
Join in the circle, join in the dance.
Seriously! Like I love that this exists because it's such a perfect modern interpretation/example of how effective war music is! Like you can FEEL how this kind of thing would've been done to get warriors amped up for battle and intimidate the enemy. It's so cool to experience.
right thats the right conclusion not that zombie bllshit
I wouldn't say berserk in my case, but definitely more focused, battle driven, more ready to face anything. I'm pumped that's for sure
Hvitserk has entered the chat
YAAASSSS I've been waiting for this reaction! And I'm SO EXCITED you get to see them live omg!
I love your channel. The reaction to this was just what I expected. Love it! I'll see you @ the show.
I'll be at the concert!!! Cannot wait to experience them at such an incredible venue.
Such a heart-warmening reaction Elizabeth! 🔥❤️
Lzzy Hale,
"Song of Women.": th-cam.com/video/rNjItcUMO7k/w-d-xo.html And Elizabeth's other videos: th-cam.com/users/TheCharismaticVoicevideos Enjoy!
I found The Hu from Heilung!!!
Before we get into it, I just want to say that everything after the Ravens’ croaks is among the heaviest stuff I’ve ever heard.
Thank you for this!!!! And thank you for exposing more to this, it’s one of my favorite last of all time
for everyone if you ever get the chance to see Heilung live, do it. Its absolutely stunning even at 2am on a Festival xD
An observation: Your videos have never gotten old, and I continue to learn. I get excited every time you upload a new video. Thanks for all you do!

This channel introduced me to Heilung. I showed my wife one of their videos and the look I got was " you are on your own buddy". It is an acquired taste apparently. Well consider it acquired.
Lol my wife calls it satanic and won't touch it 😂

Ok... so after listening to Heilung and The Hu, I think I'd be quite ready to do battle. Good grief! Such cool stuff! Guess I'm off to find some Heilung now.... Now I wish I could go to the show. Wow. Enjoy it! Thanks for the intro to another groovy group. :D
Only had to wait for what feels like an eternity for you to react to Alfadhirhaiti!
Finally!
Been waiting for this one for a while. Good to see more Heilung. That instrument Maria was playing is called a Ravanahatha, from India.
I was wondering what that was! Thank you!
@@Seiferboi No problem
So excited, I'm seeing them in Berlin in November for the first time.
When the Ravens came in Odin was calling his two Ravens by name to his side just like he called his two wolves at the beginning.
Eli, I love your channel and your reactions, FAN #1 HERE,
thanks for share the music that i dont know that is exist
and thanks for make me smile :)
Also, there is something super entrancing about just chanting on that same note. It really builds some kind of trance in me...
Such is the nature of sound. Flesh piercing, mind breaking, dwelling in the very depths of the spirit.
I literally gasped, it was so awesome to experience 😁
Also, that massive drum at the back of the stage is amazing! You can feel it in your bones and through the soles of your feet, it's like the earth is beating in time to the music.
Always so much fun to watch your reactions and hear your explanations on how sounds are achieved! I love this!
One of three songs from this album used in the final episodes of vikings. So fitting and amazing that they are getting the recognition they deserve.
for real? Im still watching it!
i saw this video about 2 years ago, and now just noticed you mention redrock...
funny thing is: they released that very same gig on their channel to watch.
on a side note: i took my daughter to their concert here in antwerp last week. she only knew one song: krigskaldir. she didnt know how they looked, or how the concert was going to be...
all i can say is, more than half of the show, her jaw dropped.
when we were driving home she was silent, and i did not disturb her, but the next day, she thanked me for taking her with me, and did not stop talking about heilung. lol the rest of the day she was listening to all their songs, and made me make a promise:
next time they are near us, we HAVE TO go together...
heilung, nice to see the recognition they are getting for being such an awesome band!!!
I can't believe I haven't seen this review til now
Wacka Wacka Wacka Wacka + Wacka ..... Wacka ..... = True vocal awesomeness!

I think this is meant to be an invocation of Odin before a battle, so the building of it makes loads of sense.
You should research Seidr while you're at it, they utilize a lot of seidr trance methods in their music, including the animal noises.
Maybe even a berserker ritual

This has quickly become one of my favorite channels, as a black and death metal guitarist and vocalist with roots as a cellist and classically trained singer.
As an Ásátruar, it's awesome to hear invocations to Draupnir and Gungnir, Geri and Freki (both of which represent rapaciousness) Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory), Sleipnir (slippery, in the sense of being elusive), etc.
Is it any wonder Scandinavians are the masters of metal? This was metal before guitars were even invented. What an incredible experience.
All Roman's were fearless till the forest started chanting lol
The Romans never went that far north to meet the Norse. And learn English, plurals aren't written with apostrophes...
@@frutti_di_marius and the Romans only met the southern tribes. When and where did they meet northern Germanic tribes?
@@SwordQuake2 they didn't but the culture that this music represents is not distinctly northern, the lyrics are in a Norse dialect but instruments and throat singing were widely spread throughout all Germanic tribes.
