If your AC or Heat is not working it may not be the AC compressor or the car heater. Instead it may be the Blend Air Flap Acutator that can cost more than a $1000 to fix it. However there is an easier and free fix that requires only a Torx 25 aka T25 screwdriver and a flat head screwdriver. This video may work for 1998-2005 ML320 Models. Do it at your own risk. I highly recommend working with a qualified Mechanic. Neither I nor my company can be held responsible for anything gone wrong.
Since this became evident at the end you just wasted 4 mins of your life I’ll attempt to help. 1st I’m a stay at home mom with no experience working on cars, nor do I have a very good automotive vocabulary m, but I’d like to help explain what to do.. The white plastic you see is able to be pushed backward or pulled forward depending if you have your AC or heat on. Can’t remember which way is what (you’ll know by what temp is coming from your vents). I’m a female with small hands so I just pulled back the insulation & was able to access the “leaver”. I either pulled it pulled it forward or pushed it backwards can’t remember which, but opposite of where it currently was) & presto the AC came on, additionally when it gets cold I do the same thing, but push/pull it in the opposite direction activate the heater. I’ve only found one other video explaining this (over two years ago). I apologize I can’t find it now. I have a ‘98ML & the Mercedes dealership quoted me nearly $3000 to remove the dash & repair it. My cars not worth $2000!! It was an act of god that I found the solution of going through the glove compartment b/c there were ZERO chances a mechanic was EVER going to give away this tip. It literally has saved my kiddos & I from heat exhaustion or frostbite! I know nothing about cars, but really hope my horrible explanation might help or at least point someone else in the right direction. This does work & it’s sad this video leaves you “hanging”at the end when I’m certain it could have really helped some people out.
Thank you Heather, for writing what many of us concluded. I have seen a fix on a Mercedes car club site in which the guy attached a metal coathanger-type rod around the white thingy and had made a small slice in the back of the glovebox where this rod sticks through. He bent a circle at the end to get your finger through it, then just close the glovebox door! You can either push or pull the little rod depending on your time of the year....no need to disassemble the glovebox again.
Nicely done,, thanks
I'm going to look at Mercedes that has no heat or air conditioning. I'm hoping it's an easy fix like this.
So which way does the flap go to hot
Strong Socks and Sandals game. The cut at the end was less than helpful.
