W163s are amazing beasts. I have around 600,000 miles on them. Ran one from 0 to 350K miles, then gave it to a homeless buddy and he lived in it and drove it for another couple of years. Super easy to work on. I have abused the crap out of them and enjoyed every minute! Allowing them to overheat very badly (warping heads) is the only thing that kills them. I drove one 10 miles back and forth to work for a week when I didn't have time to fix the water pump; with only bags of ice on top of the manifold, with no cooling system the temperature never got above normal. Beasts!
This vehicles are unic, great on road and offroad, I had one for 10 years and its running strong, done off road many times and thousands of miles cross country, never fail me, it's an incredible vehicle
Ive taken my w163 to Kenilworth and driven it through the creeks and across some soft sane. only thing i had a problem with was replacing engine mounts and some electronic bugs. Tough as nails
Have had 2 different W163 before, now still have 1998 W163 it is better on off-road than any other MLs and can keep up with 4x4s and also bought a W166, I gotta say W166 is also bulletproof, one thing I gotta say about my latest W163 is it has given me transmission ⚙️ problems for the second time 🤦🏻♂️ could be some electric hopefully 🙏🏼
Transmission needs maintenance - oil change, filter (50k km or miles, it wont judge you), selenoids 150k miles, conductor plate sometimes. Its a fun repair at home, if you have the patience and clean space.
My 99 ML430 was built in Germany, and was a japan import right drive, everything works, mint condition,i changed the transfer case oil,it was black but no metal, these things are a tank..
My 2005 ML270 cdi has been reliable in the past 4 years up until 320.000 km. Now it starts and stalls when outside temperature is sub zero. Then it take some time to start again. Fuel line has been replaced, also high pressure fuel pump seal. Can not find the problem
Mercedes one of the worst cars, even the jacking point are collapsing Absolutely rabish You name it there is from oil leaks to whatever you can think of , its the worst 4x4
My 2000 ml 320 has more problems then imaginable but that said its still dependable, the transfer case chain thunks under power. The transmission slips under sudden acceleration forcing me to pull over & turn the engine off for a few seconds the restart it & it works again... The sunroofs leak bad on these, you have to clean out the pillers plastic tubes which can be intensive with removal of front outter body panels. The radio doesnt work as my mb vin check showed i have navigation + radio & yet no radio, etc...navigation is not needed with google maps on cellphones or Bluetooth for ear buds. Widshield washer arm for passenger isnt working, thats a nasty job cleaning out a rubber gasket. Locks all go crazy using central door lock, drivers door must be locked unlocked with key. Oil leaks under front engine...unknown as the hood has no pole or hydraulic means to keep hood up... Yes it needs lots of work but for $700 Canadian it was the only thing on facebooks Marketplace that even worked...still works with 168.000km on it & no driverside window or door handle as previous owner had no you tube to show him how to remove door panel to fix window off it track... So happy i got this 4x4 winters coming.
