Well, regardless of this incomplete review, I purchased the camera this past week. I spent time reading many other reviews to make my choice and I could not be happier. It took me about 5 minutes to adjust to the slightly different controls and the camera worked perfectly. More important, the image quality is as good as I expected. RAW and JPEG quality was super at all ISO’s that one would consider usable. Focus was fast and accurate as well as flexible for those who want more or less control. I used my L series lens’s and the adapter without issue. Over all I found the camera to be a very worthwhile purchase for my needs (smaller cam when the DSLR is too big) and anyone watching this video review needs to look past the “don’t buy” aspect and decide for yourself on what’s important to you and make an educated decision based on many other reviews, organic or not.
It’s on par with its competition. I bought the camera after I read your review. I found none of your deal breaking observations to be an issue. The camera performs like advertised. To add the inflammatory title and to accuse anyone of trying to justify a purchase is petty and adds zero credibility to a review.
While I can see the validity in most of the points mentioned here, I think some of them are due to expectations that are not relevant for the typical M6 user, let me explain: I have owned/own the Original M, the M3, M100, and M50. The reason I have is that I think they are best used as an extended point-and-shoot, or in my case, as complementary to my larger full frames cameras. From that point of view, they are compact, lightweight, perfect social cameras and travel companions, while allowing me to take the occasional "professional" shot when I need it. For this reason, it doesn't matter the least if the buffer is to shallow etc, they work great for 99% of my use cases. Granted, others may have other needs, but I think this review assumes a certain type of user. Personally, I love the M100, because of its compactness and the bounceable flash, and the M50 because on occasion I what some better controls and an EVF, for me the M6 mk ii would probably the optimal solution and the best of these two
perfect social cameras and travel companions on M6i and getting M6ii and on RP too...the compact size differences... does make a different on carrying it around.
Is is good for landscape if you don’t wanna carry a huge/burdensome camera with you. Looking for something better than my Iphone but I want it small and lightweight.
Even as a Sony shooter I have to disagree with you and I think you are unfair to this camera. For example, the buffer actually clears out very fast with the UHS-II card. Sony a6600 and Nikon Z50 are both more expensive, have slower burst rates, have lower resolution, yet they both are using UHS-I slot and do a worse job than the M6II. Canon should be applauded for delivering this performance.
What about clear video footage for low light and regular natural light. I want to be able to live stream with my face but shoot footage of weight training in a rugged dim lit gym with mirrors. NFL athletes trained in the gym....it's rugged though and I want to capture just raw weight training.
Well, I disagree. It's a small camera with very good manual control (not all of the are), having 2 dials on the top and a third, additional one on the back. Plus a usable button for BBF (a rarity in this body style of cameras), comfortable switch between AF and MF, great touch screen, easy to navigate and understand menu, very good video AF, usable 4k without crop and with AF, good enough picture quality outside of full pro needs... I personally use a camera with this body style, namely Panasonic GX85 (it's called GX80 here) and cannot remember the last time I looked in the EVF. I took +8k images with it, using the back screen only. That is what M6II is designed for, so where EVF goes is a pointless argument, imo. And about M50 - 4k is not usable, 1 dial (which is the very definition of self-tripping), no usable BBF button, flash that is pointing in your subject, which makes it impossible to apply, while on the M6II it's tiltable to bounce off the ceiling (something I use on regular basis on the GX85 and find it a great idea)... OK, one can save 300 dollars buying the M50, but if the camera has poor controls and is less capable in both video, control and even maybe AF for stills, what's the point? And about the price - when M50 was announced, It was 900 (!) dollars. Now THAT's a bad deal. I read they are going to return the 24p with the next firmware. I see some people want that, so there it is. And when the three f/1.4 prime lenses Sigma makes come for EF-M mount, like they announced, the legitimate problem with lens selection will be improved a bit. And no, I do not have this camera, neither I plan buying it. At the moment I have a Panasonic and an Olympus camera and I'm not shopping for a new one. So I'm not a "Canon fanboy" of some kind. Just disagreeing with what you say. Cheers and keep them videos organic!
You made some good points which are also relevant to M6ii's primary competitor, A6400, at $900. Latter has 1 dial on top and on at the back, BBF, AF/MF switch, usable touch screen, usable menu. HOWEVER, inside the same small body, A6400 is able to pack in EVF, picture profile, sharper 4K, deeper buffer (40~ compressed RAW vs 20~), more native lenses that won't lock users within one of Canon's three mounts, etc.
Momchil Yordanov I totally agree with your assessment. I have 2 Canon M6’s (not MKII) and I love em.....the M50 will be ok for video, but M6 is awesome for manual still photography....I could care less about 4K video, I still shoot 720p for TH-cam uploads....I still don’t know how to shoot in auto mode...I love mounting MF vintage lens to the M6.....
@@frankfeng2701 Also note that the a6400 also has severe rolling shutter at 4k, substantially softer 1080p video than m6 II (if you prefer 60 fps vs 30 or 24 fps), 11 vs 14 fps burst (and for many people the main benefit of such a speed is to take a really short burst for like half a second to get the moment you want although a long buffer is also important), 21mp vs 32mp images in certain scenarios (if, say, you need to crop anyways for wildlife pictures so the 1.5x crop of the a6400 is a little less reach than the 1.6x crop), decently larger lenses in many cases, and a more expensive super-telephoto lens selection (the 200-600 is $2000 vs a sigma 150-600 which is about $900). I also think (but I'm not sure) that the a6400 lacks a cRAW option which the M6 II has (with no noticeable loss of quality in many situations) which turns the buffer from 26 shots to 42 which is much closer to the a6400 in the duration of which you can take pictures without stopping.
If you are mainly a stills shooter choosing between the m50 and the m6 mark II you should remember that the m50 only offers a single dial for adjusting the exposure, in my opinion the 3 dials offered by the m6 mark II is far superior in that sense. The m6 mark II also offers servo eye af while the m50 only offers eye af in one shot mode, this could be important to you depending on what you typically shoot. I agree that the tripod plate covering the battery door is a pain by the way.
Did I miss the part where you talk about image quality in any detail? That is what I care about. The nit-picking over other things seems opposite of a valuable review.
barlisbre ah...sounds like you are looking for affirmation of your purchase, not the truth about its weaknesses. There are many other reviews that will support what you are looking for.
Most cameras have good image quality. Usability and ergonomics and some features are more important. Sometimes though, the feature might be small size, so the ergos are gonna suffer potentially.
I have had this camera for 4 months. All your downfalls are able to be remedied with custom setting. I have an arca mount that allows it to open. I prefer m6m2 over m50 and even the EOS R.
Just got the camera Today! and im blown away with all the customization and the performance. i disagree with this video. the camera is incredible. Not a R5 but come on!
i had the m6i andd m6ii then rp... over the r and r5... which i also tried m50 and m50ii... tbh... the so call 24p4k on m50ii not so much on the the crop.. but m6ii with firmware update.. not bad. for the size and the quality... i kept my m6ii and rp.. and pass on my m6 to my parents. they liked. since they use 5d4... XD now the rf lens are going to kill me in the long run if my parents want to snatch my r... ------------------------------------------------------- PS: i still prefer m6ii over m50ii
@@richardcg5500 compact to go around for vlog m6ii.... for looks and work... go for rp... if u need to look good. but m6ii is sufficient if u got all ef lens or sigma m lens
Sorry Michael, I really liked your videos. However this one was not well done at all and strangely biased against Canon. (1) Swiss Arca tripod mount that allegedly blocks the battery bay. You know that there are tons of shapes and sizes. Pick a smaller one and nothing get's blocked. I even use an L-bracket w/o problems. It's always on. Costs you less than ten bucks. (2) There are ton's of great microphones that merely connect to the 3.5mm plug and stick outside the side. And even with a small rig it's still smaller than the 90D. (3) I am a left eye shooter and guess what: Just configure the focus point select-area on the touchscreen to your needs and all is good. (4) High speed burst. Not a sports shooter but I guess these are physical limits. Which camera of this size does (much) better? (5) Raw burst mode. It seems they are basically shooting a special movie which you can pick stills from. I don't want to deal with tons of pictures filling up my SD card. I think the way they implemented it is rather smart. Which camera of this form factor performs better? Plus, you just cannot compare a full size DSLR with the M6 Mk II. And the M50 is miles away from the M6 Mk II (as the old M6 is). Both cannot be charged with USB. And please don't tell me you cannot charge it with a 5 years old power bank. There are physical limits. It's great that they implemented PD charging. Here are some features why I updated from the Mark I: (1) Instant GPS EXIF with the smartphone. Eventually. Great for a landscape- and street photographers. (2) USB charging with a PD charger or powerbank. Great! Works with my EOS R as well! (3) Amazing image quality. Even with the limited M lenses. But with the 32mm f1.4 lens I can barely see the difference to the EOS R. (4) I still use the old EVF (still available) that you can tilt. Just perfect for me. It seems you are p*** off by Canon for some reason. The tone in your video reflects that. I love my M6 Mk II (not a vlogger or making videos). It's a great camera for street photography or landscape photography with an impressive image quality, even with the rather poor M lenses that comes at a small size. It does come with a couple of new features like USB charging, USB, touch focus w/ EVF, great sensor, great usability (at least to me). I thought you would come up with issues I overlooked. However, that was not the case.
If you actually watched the video, title etc. You would see that my view is it is overpriced related to the competition, not that it is a bad camera. if you want an EVF its far more expensive than the competitors.
lol your point 1 is funny translates into: "buy a new tripod ball head", 2- lol also funny "Buy a Small Rig Mount" Yeah basically this is the point of my whole video, for what you get and what you have to pay for, its expensive. You might not like that but its the truth.
This camera is a beast for street photography the ergonomics of the 90D are suited for working photographers. But the M6ii is more like a GR3 or X100F competitor & in that category it's a beast!.
Even if take the price into account, this youtuber's reasons are still untenable. Because other cameras at the same price point also have similar problems. On XT30 fast release plates blocks the battery lid as well. On a6400 the flip screen will also be blocked by hot shoe accessories (he mentioned this as well). On XT30 you can't even flip the screen to the front. All other cameras like a6400, XT30 has very shallow buffer too, and EOS M6 Mark II is even the only camera that supports UHS-II at this price point. You simply can't expect a under $900 camera to have a deep buffer like 1DX3 or a9. Buffer clearing speed on more expensive cameras like A7III is also relatively slow. M6 Mark II is overpriced, but the main reasons could be (1)Significantly softer 4k. Competitors like XT30 and a6400 are downsampled from 6k. (2)Competitors all have Log gamma. But in many countries when M6 Mark II is on sale, the price is very tempting. For example in Australia you can get M6 Mark II + 15-45mm + 22mm f2 + view finder bundle for just AU$1200 (~US$800). Let me guess, the reason why this youtuber was pissed off by this camera could be: Canon refused to sponsor and provide sample units to him (and that's also why this video is 100& organic). Ok it's just my guess. The funniest thing is that while he is criticising the EOS M6 Mark II, he recommends 90D, which has many problems that M6 Mark II has (buffer, video, etc.), and 90D is even much more expensive. Well about the flip screen and battery lid, even with a microphone adapter and a case M6 Mark II is much lighter than the 90D...
Wow what bad reasoning. Most of the channels you mentioned usually promote other manufacturers....So that ain't it. All the reviews I watched mentioned almost all the things you are saying here, so nothing new. It is a great cameea for what it is with a solid sensor, resolution, dpaf, convenience of use, great features, and a reasonable price. Basically I can break down the reasons to put any camera on the market in a "not to buy list". You should concentrate on what the camera does , and how well and not what it doesn't do or you wish it did. For me as a 30+ year photographer this camera as a complimentary second camera is a no brainer.
Any and all press events, regardless of the company are consider marketing campaigns (sponsored, ads) by the FTC, despite what these reviewers say or believe. They are part of the promotional arm of each company whose events they attend. You are welcome to believe any and all things coming from these reviews.
@@MMaven of course they are, and 99% of photography youtube channels (including the big popular ones) are pure BS, don't know if yours is one of those too, it is clear to anyone who knows even little photography and has even very little knowledge on how cameras work.
You can set the touch control on the focusing point off. 90D is a DSLR and the D stands for dinosaur. Put your favorite photo settings in C2 and then you can switch to the video mode quickly.
Found the video comical. I believe the goal was to create a click bait title and hope for views. All I found was a inaccurate and incomplete review created by someone who clearly has an alternative agenda against the camera.
Nothing against the camera, just not worth the price they are asking for what it does. I love Canon, just not this camera for the price. Sorry if that hurt your feelings.
Harold Carlson please watch the left eye problem video. Using your left hand to change focus is not only counterintuitive, but you can no longer support heavier lenses with it. It doesn’t work.
I think the camera's intended use is to be a modular jack of all trades. If you're photography centric get the evf to use and you have more control dials than the M50. If you're video focused you have a tilt up screen, 4K and can reposition the hotshoe for vlogging with 3rd party options (cages, etc.). You want portability, no evf and the squarish nature can fit in a bag like a point and shoot. It's not a perfect camera but can fit the needs of many types of photographers.

It's very sad to see how many TH-cam channels I used to trust have become pure publicity. Thanks for an honest video.
I get a bit sick of channels I watch that struggle to say anything negative about cameras. I don’t fall for that crap. I want to know the positives AND the negatives.
Lol lol the files are put in a wrapper folder allowing you to choose if you want to extract raw or jpeg. I think you need to go learn how to use these as you make many statements which are not true.
Its consistent with my assessment about the camera. "Canon wants us to pay more to trip over ourselves". Now we have to use either their their proprietary software to access it, or do it from the camera. yay. What a pain in the but. Why not just have regular full rez RAW files instead?
@@MMaven Why is that a problem it is technology that they have introduced its only fair that the do that Sony does the same thing. You make it sound like it's a piece of krapp when it's not.
Amar Talwar - P A M O L It appears that you are unaware of what the word “usability” means. If something is harder to use than it should be then it’s not very usable. What you are literally saying is that making a Camera harder to use is fine
@@MMaven right I am just a idiot that has clients that pay for the work and also shooting for 35 years what do I know about usability. Your true colors are surely visible in your recent videos and this comment thread
@@camerasutra247 I beg your pardon? I didn't attack you personally, you advocated that using software to access the files is somehow better than just having the files. I never called you an idiot or attacked you- I merely pointed out you didn't appear to be aware of what usability is. Jeez. If you want it to be harder after shooting for 35 years, you are welcome to it. Enjoy!
While I disagree, and I’m psyched that I just ordered this, I support your approach. I think there’s something to be said for your “organic review“ concept, and it’s always good to be reminded that sometimes the relentless positivity isn’t always the most useful way to get information. If I had gotten this camera before my two M50s for my live streaming set up, I would’ve saved myself $1000 on a capture card sitting in an external GPU enclosure because there is no freaking way to get HDMI to USB 3.0 capture cards right now. So, it’s the clean HDMI out that got me, plus the 4K with dual pixel auto focus. And, did anyone really think that Canon would never offer a firmware upgrade to give us 24 frames per second as they have just done?
I own one of these and I love it because it works for what I do and the issues presented here are not an issue with the way I have my camera setup...however I would still tell anyone looking to buy one to watch this video 100% before deciding if these very valid points are a concern point for them. Although they might not seem significant, the last thing I want is for someone to buy this camera, find out it's not for them and then wrongly accuse the camera for being "bad" when it simply isn't the right tool for their needs.
as a professional stills photographer who has made a succesful business with a cheap canon 200d and a second hand 6D in 2020, I would like to say that your points are valid. I work in studio for 90 percent of my work so low light etc is not an issue. It seems like you are making a video to counterpoint the obvious promo shite that came out at the time. This isnt an arri or a red for video obviously.. but the sensor and the autofocus are excellent. My biggest issue as a studio shooter is not being able to have a flash controller and evf at the same time but I use live view 9 times out of 10 on my 200d. For the record this video comes across as salty.
Hello, I have downloaded the manual ad discovered that there is an option to select the active area of the screen for the touch and drag af, therefore the problem you mentioned about selecting the af point with the nose inadvertently could be solved in this way.....
Please watch my video on the left a problem- When you are you can changing the position of the focusing on the touchpad the issue becomes when you have long lenses the need to support it what is your left hand going to do?
Ok Michael, now I see what you mean, I don"t have a camera with a touchscreen or with a joystick, so I am used to use the d-pad or to place the focus point in the center and allow it to move during tracking........but for this specific model also consider that the native telephoto lenses are small and light.....anyway for me a bigger issue for this camera is the lack of ibis, also considering that the best lens for the system, the 32mm isn't stabilized and the upcoming sigmas probably aren't either.....
i just make youtube videos in my room lol but as I grow and get older I may get into vlogging/want to change my content. I want a camera I can keep for at least another 2-3 years. M50, M6 or M6 Mark II?
His SD card is perfectly adequate, it's just that 14fps at 32.5mp is a lot of data and the M6 Mk.ii appears to be capped at 30 or so total frames, either from a limitation standpoint or Canon simply limited it to make room for higher end models.
I have the M6 Mark II and the 90D. I like both of them and use them for slightly different things and they both run different angles when we are doing interviews and video casts at the office. Each have a place - with the sigma lens true it’s a super portable and very capable photography camera but for video the internal stabilization is pretty decent and the focus, even using 4K is very snappy and very good.
Interesting review. Some of the design points are valid such as flip-up screen conflicting with hot shoe accessories, but others can actually be worked around by settings in the menus. Most other points are minor and overblown. The M6ii is an excellent value for its feature set --- especially compared with the announced R7 which is almost double the price point for similar performance in most respects!
Wow, thank you for this review. I chose this camera as a good option to buy in a near-future, but after seeing the complete video seems like I will have to think about other options. In your opinion, do yo see the A6000 as a viable option to an amateur TH-camr? Thanks!
The A6XXX series has its own issues, like the menus. If you are looking to create youtube videos on a canon camera, I think you need a front facing monitor. Depending on your budget, this could be an M50 (at 24 fps 4K), one of many rebels, or the 90D which will do 4K at 30fps, with 24 coming soon.
@@MMaven Thank you so much!!! Yeah, I thought about the menu issues and the front screen... But it is impossible to have everything without a huge budget hahaha Greetings from Spain!
if you are considering sony, WAIT for a6100. don't get the a6000. although it's very cheap these days, very tempting. if you need a camera NOW, get the m50. if you are not used to carrying a dslr everywhere you go, don't get the 90d. you would just leave it at home all the time.
a6000 is 5 years old. No flip screen and no mic input. Get the a6100 at least. Yes sony menu sucks and ugly but the image quality and video quality is stunning. Once u get to learn the sony menu, everything is easy.
@@cooloox Yeah, taking Michael's opinions as a flag, I trust the reasons he gives in this review to stop considering this M6II as a true option. Of course, it has its advantages, yeah, but, considering that I am a Sony user, seems like the Sony a6100 it's, probably another viable option, at least, in a near future scenario haha
This is a camera for taking photos. Do you know that one of the first things you set up on this camera depending on which eye you shoot with, is you determine in menu "top left/top right" corner to use as your control area only so you nose or hands don't move the focus points. Most pro vloggers are using frames anyway. And the dial, it took you 1 second to reach video. Did you talk about its external 10bit4:2:2 hdmi recording and its Fv modes ? Everything you mentioned has been mentioned in nearly all reviews and negatives. Nothing new.
It doesn't sound like you understand the Left Eye problem. You should watch that video before coming to conclusions about how easy it is to resolve in the menus (it isnt). I dont like extra button presses, it needs a dedicated video mode switch list the 90D. The 10 bit 422 only works with certain compatible recorders that recognize HDR HDMI, its not true 10 Bit 422 that you can plug into any recorder and expect to grade.
@@MMaven Thanks Michael, i shoot with my left eye so I do understand. Regardless it took me 10 seconds to remedy after Canon made a 'Camera Assist' made a youtube video specific to it. Another one thats annoying is the touch screen shutter fire, but click on the icon and it deactivates. The main issue is Canon default activated items which it should if left off by default. I dare say it will be remedied in the already announced firmware that will install 24p. Can you show some footage on you trying the external hdmi recording ? It would be great and you would be the first.
It all depends on how you want to use the camera. I am a nature and wildlife photographer. The raw batch mode is great for certain situations. Just want the crop and use canon DPP to choose the frame in post processing. I import the CSI files to the lightroom file location separately and then pick out the frames I want. The 14 frames per second and the autofocus for wildlife is great. Rarely need more than a few seconds of buffer, but more would have been good. Do not vlog or do much video, so block of the microphone is not a big deal. Usually do not use audio anyway with video clips. The ability to use all my canon L glass is all important. The ability to use a Viltrox speedbooster is very helpful (do not need edge to edge sharpness with the Telephotos). So while I agree with your criticisms, they should be directed at folks who use the camera like you do, not the camera in general.
Right! Why the heck would you want to shoot more than a few seconds at 20 FPS? What would you do with a hundred pics of the same thing. Pretty dumb argument. In fact pretty much anything negative in this review, other than the pricing is nitpicking. I'm buying this because as a camera not for video. Have owned most of the M's because no Sony APS or MFT gives me pictures with the same Canon IQ. That is what makes this camera worth it. The lens selection has been lacking but that will be remedied shortly by Sigma. The two primes in the M series are great. Haven't used the macro, so can't speak to that. The killer app for this is with the Viltrox speed booster. Turned my M6 into a beast. Can't wait to see what it does with the MKii and all my L series glass. Sony's suck. I have an A7R3 and absolutely hate the ergonomics. The 6000 series shares the same stupid menus with very little else to make up for it. The A7s do shoot awesome stills and videos so that's redeeming. The a6000s give me nothing. If you have the coin and you want great photos in an excellent form factor I'll take the M6ii over anything. I have a ton of MFT's, EOS 5Ds, D850, and the Sony and a ton of lenses. My daily driver? The M6, soon to be M6II. Would consider the Fujis as they have a ton to offer, but without being able to share in all the rest of my Canon ecosystem, makes it a non starter.
@@twothbeave Even with regards to pricing, the M6 Mk.ii and the 90D are basically identical IQ-wise and even spec-wise, but Canon still priced the M6 Mk.ii lower. So if anything the M6 Mk.ii is honestly a steal for what you pay.
@@twothbeave I ordered mine earlier with the EVF and EF-Adapter. I kept comparing it to the 90D for the entire time both have been out. I couldn't justify a real reason to choose the 90D over the M6 Mk.ii other than direct mounted EF-lenses and increased shot capacity. But the M6 Mk.ii has faster burst rate, 100% EVF coverage and it's smaller and more versatile to have on hand while still having the same exact sensor and processor and being priced $300 less. Also the 90D has been plagued with a continually growing library of AF calibration issues per lens model. People are working in communities to help each other find the right AF calibrations and settings to make the 90D more usable at the moment. Maybe Canon will release firmware to fix these issues, but right now they're pretty bad for many users.
Canon wants us to use the new Sigma lenses I guess. I don't know why the largest lens company in the world can't come up with a few good M mount lenses.
@@snowwalker9999 I'm sure they could do it fine. They just don't care about M mount. They want people to buy the cameras. They don't really care about the lenses. I can't blame them, it's always been a locked system. There is no path from this to the R system that is the future that doesn't also involve adapting EF and EF-S lenses, which isn't really helpful to them in the long run. I see the M series going away once it stops being profitable. What they should do is take a clue from Sony, and let Sigma have access to the algorithm to make lenses work better on their M series cameras. That way they only have to focus on the cameras. It looks to me like Sony also doesn't care about their APS-C line outside of making cameras. They don't want to waste time and resources making lenses that will cost more and be outclassed by Sigma. So, why not let them worry about it, and just sell the cameras? Then focus on things like RF lenses. I think it's a smart move, but they will never do it. And so, Sigma might not want to keep developing lenses for a system that might have no future. I kind of went off on a tangent here, sorry mate.
The hot shoe evf actually helps with left eye focus and big nose problem. The flip up screen does make horizontal shooting operation a bit faster. Compared with M50's build in evf, both have pros and cons.
@@MMaven You did, no doubt about it. But it's a matter of balance for me, too many negative points, while the only thing that is really wrong with it is the pricing. And you gloss over its strengths. Don't know if that makes sense. Also, prices are flexible, they always come down. Some faster than others. BTW, I don't own it and not planning on buying. But for the right price I wouldn't mind having a nice, well handling, 32MP compact APS-C mirrorless camera.
Battlehawk I did mention both of its strengths and pointed out that they’re absolutely limited you’re not getting full resolution on that RAW 30 frames per second, The actual buffer depth is so low that I don’t consider it a serious tool. What is it about the M6ii in your opinion that makes it better than everything else out there at the price?
yea, camera is expensive at this point, but nothing you mention seems like dealbreaker to me...that tripod plate problem is not a problem either, just use smaller arca swiss plate, or just cut a bit from existing one as I did for my M100.
this videos seems focused on comparative weakness without weight strengths. Idk there is a camera at this price that does as well at 4k with as good AF. The RAW file things seems weird. Thanks for introducing that, I don't understand it yet. Idk about the 14fps raw burst compared to what fps it does RAW in a normal non-burst way.
I would instead look towards the R-Series bodies because the EF systems (such as the 90D) are maturing and the RF eco-system is now their main focus. I would say that if you already had EF lenses then it would be fine, but if you're coming into Canon, it would be best to go with the ecosystem thats growing as the technology will continually advance and you will be able to make use of that newer technology.
While i do agree with you but... for someone who has used the M50 for 2 years now... It gets kinda tiring to have to remove it from the tripod and remove the tripod mount coz it is in the way of the battery/SD card door. ^_^ But i love my M50 hahaha and I am gonna love this camera too.
I have a problem. I am looking for a good camera for landscape and paintings and the quality of x-T30 or G9 is ok for landscape but when I shoot a painting I dont like what I see. I really dont know why that is a problem. Details are ok for landscape but both colour and detail is going wrong when I shoot paintings.
thanks for your advice and for pointing out all these issues....for me the only one which matters is the left eye/touchscreen issue, but isn’t it common to all cameras with a touchscreen? And is there a way around it, like auto disabling the touchscreen when the eye sensor detects that the evf is in use, and then choose the focus point on the d-pad? About price...it depends on what you value most, and the price of canon cameras drops a bit with time....it’s not apple!
Michael, Good of you to identify these issues. What i’m surprised more reviewers aren’t flagging as a concern is the way i’m presuming lens diffraction should begin to show up at lower aperture settings given the new 32 mp sensor (versus 24 mp on earlier apsc models). Have you noticed that as an issue with either the D90 or M6ii? Thanks, craig
Thanks for the review. I am like previous commentors, that expectation of this camera needing to have all the features of a pro camera to be acceptable is missing the point of Canon's attempt at making a very good low-end, entry level mirrorless camera. If it had everything a pro camera had, then it would be a pro camera.
I've been considering on getting this one and now that you mentioned the worst things about it I'm am now prepared for it and know what to expect now, so for that I thank you.
Watching this 14 months after you posted it originally. Reading these comments and seeing a lot of fanboying going on, which is always funny. It's like, if you even say one negative thing the fanbois all think you are attacking them personally. The camera has flaws, they all do. Pointing them out helps people better understand what they are getting into. A lot of the flaws are just things you need to learn to deal with, every camera has them. I feel like what you are saying still holds true, in that you are not saying it's a bad camera, only one that is overpriced for what it does and has some flaws in the usability. It's still 850 USD over a year later, and if you get the adapter (recommended) and the EVF with it, that makes it a whole lot more. I mean, it's a good camera, no doubt, and likely is the best M series camera to date, but that doesn't make it the best choice for all. There is a reason the M50 is still the top selling mirrorless camera, as it does so much for a price that seems reasonable, even at its launch price. I really can't imagine the majority of people that are in the target audience of the M6mkII wouldn't do just as well with an M50, better in the case where they don't have a library of expensive lenses to resolve the 32mp sensor. Which I would guess is most users of cameras in this class. When I am asked about it, I usually tell people I don't recommend it as well, unless they want to use 4K video with actually good AF on a Canon mirrorless camera with a crop sensor (The M50 4K is horrible by comparison, due to the crop and not using DPAF in 4K). That is a pretty specific market of people, but for them this really isn't overpriced, since to do that otherwise they would have to go elsewhere, which is going to cost them even more. I think Canon knows this, and that is why they still charge what they do, those capitalist dogs! LOL. For stills or 1080 video, the M50 will meet the majority of needs for users looking at this class of camera for a lot less money. If you are not sure which you need, then you probably don't need the more expensive one. I guess if someone doesn't mind spending the money, they are still getting a good camera, as long as they are also willing to put money into lenses for that sensor. Seen plenty of people get cameras priced well beyond their needs; can't even tell you how many times someone with a D850 has asked me "will this Canon lens work on my camera?" Seriously, just asking me that question tells me a lot about how many steps you skipped on your way to that camera...
@@MMaven but with this higher pixel density compared with the 80d, the 90d has the same issue? I have this issues with my 100 mm f2, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 stm
@@MMaven on the 50mm and 85mm ends at f2.5 and 100mm ends at f2.2. I think is more like purple fringing because it shows at high contrast. I have noticed on my wife's white t-shirt. I dont have a L lenses. I also have Nikon d610 and dont have these issues.
I got Canon EOS M50 + Kit Lens 14-45mm, Viltrox EF-M.2 0.71x Speed Booster Adapter (Updated Firmware v 14) + Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens. 👍 I'm doing great. No issue with adapter. My bro got the Viltrox adapter from US for me to India.
The microphone blocking the screen is a non-issue. Every person I see in the field uses a wireless clip on Mic. I actually like the screen that flips up because on the M 50 you have to unplug and plug your mic, and every time you flip the screen, this is a major pain in the butt! You also have to fiddle around with the little door that covers the auxiliary mic input every time you flip the screen. That’s why I returned my M 50. For me it was it’s only weakness. With all of that being said, some of your other negative points are valid.
The title is misleading definitely. It is very harsh when every other camera have same problem at this price. these little problems are expected. The buffer is not great any camera at this price. What important is it shoots 14fps which is 1Dx territory , new sensor and new processor, video capabilities are great improved and even announced 24p via firmware. So i think this camera doesnt deserves harsh criticism. if u want to improve the buffer then use cRAW or even reduce the fps to 10 which is an option.
Michael The Maven you are youtube influencer and you r entitled to your opinions. No questions about that but opinion should also be respectful. Just saying organic in video content is not enough, should be organic in your thoughts, reviews and sentiments. You can definitely give ur opinion but influencing not to buy is very wrong. ur title is definitely misleading in that way.
Sorry, Michael, I think you bring up some valid points here, but I disagree with you conclusion. It's unfortunate that you will be returning the camera and uploading a video telling people not to buy it simply because of a few features you dislike. I feel the RAW burst mode was described poorly and not really a good description of how/when it would be used. Additionally, the file handling. The file opens like a zip folder in DPP and you can choose which series of images you want to export as RAW files - then toss the rest if you want. The best way is to just look for the images you want to keep in the camera and save those RAWs for later editing. This feature is used for getting the split second of when something happens like the ball on a bat, a bird taking off, a balloon popping, or as we saw in the marketing video - a dog jumping into a pool, etc. It's not marketed or intended to be used as a main way to shoot action and sports, it's a novelty that has some real, albeit limited use. Of note, the write speed of your card must be much slower than you think because my ProGrade V90 card has hit 70+ anytime I've used the feature. I was not watching your video for validation of my purchase, because I'm extremely happy with what it has added to my bag. But when I saw the title, I had to know what you found that was so glaring and poor that you would use your influence to say "don't buy it". Not a title like "things you should consider before you buy." No...just don't buy this camera. I may have to contradict this video with one of my own because I've gotten quite alot of fantastic images I feel this camera helped me get.
Actually don’t think you have watch the entire video I was very specific pointing out the problems I had with it and even at the end mentioned at what price it would be worth it. Maybe you didn’t catch that part
@@MMaven I watched the video entirely multiple times, Michael. Like I said, I agree with many of your talking points on shortcomings with the camera. Now you're suggesting that I don't think you're entitled to your own opinion? That's a pretty outrageous way to go with my criticism of your video. My beef with the video is your click bait title and you've introduced this conversation right now with your title and at the end of your video you welcomed a discussion. Starting your video by essentially saying 'if you're happy with your camera or can't return it, don't watch. If you haven't used this camera, watch this and don't buy it.' I had to hear what you had to say because I've watched you for years and have a lot of respect for you. It's not bold to create a video that swims against the current about why you shouldn't buy a camera instead of going in depth with what the camera can actually achieve, real world testing, or detail where it falls short... that's honestly bogus. There is a great deal that this camera can do that no other camera can do and I don't believe you identified that. You scratch the surface with general statements and made a big deal about left eye problems and neglect to disclose that you can move the AF area of the screen to the lower portion of the screen...unless someone has the longest face in the world, an adult nose shouldn't touch that area at all. NOT TO MENTION the screen on this camera is positioned in a way that when your left eye is up to the viewfinder, your nose is entirely to the right of the screen. It actually hovers near the AF-On button and doesn't even come in contact with the screen - so I have to assume you never even tried it. The EVF also sticks back considerably further than most EVFs so your nose is even less likely to interfere with camera operation. This camera needs to be sold with the EVF in the box at $850 straight up. I think it's overpriced without buying the kit, but is a great value with the kit. (You mentioned the kit price is in 90D territory, but you still don't have a lens on the 90D until you dish out another $250 and for that you could buy the incredibly sweet EF-M 22mm f/2 as well. That lens transforms the M6 Mark II into a beautiful little compact combo for travel/street/low light) I always try to buy my lower end "consumer cameras" with a kit lens because it helps with resale, so it wasn't a big deal for me. After two weeks with this camera and shooting with it in every environment I experienced in that timeframe, I've come away thoroughly impressed. (Wedding, real estate, sports, travel, commercial, and leisure.) At this point I believe making an M6 Mark II instead of an M5 Mark II was a deliberate move to not destroy the lackluster full-frame mirrorless offerings Canon has right now. A 14fps camera with killer autofocus from Canon for $850 is bewildering when you see the EOS R can only muster around 5-7fps with tracking. I would have loved a 50-60 image buffer, but again it's $850. There are ways to circumvent the buffer performance with quick 4-5 shot bursts and it never hits the buffer even in RAW. A camera of this size can be taken anywhere and makes for a great vacation camera. It's also a tremendously capable bird and amateur wildlife camera in addition to having AF tracking that may actually be better than my 1DX Mark II - it will certainly be replacing my 7D Mark II as my crop camera at races. So you may think this is a mistake, that's fine. But as a professional photographer that works for multiple race teams, the director of photography for two national racing series, published in national magazines every month, and shooting weddings across the country, real estate, etc. I endorse this camera with my name and I think it's one of the best if not the best camera on the market under $1200. I honestly don't know how two people could be so far apart after using the same camera.
Thank you for this review! I own a M6 (1. version) as a lightweight portable travel and street camera. Your honesty is greatly appreciated! TH-cam has become a very unreliable source for tech reviews and this video is an exception!
Thanks for the video. Appreciate the honesty. I'm probably the classic example of someone looking for something specific and the M6 mk ii still fits the bill. When I started making videos I was working with bands (and I'll return to that once this shitshow's over) and needed quality in low light and had 3/4 cameras operating. It started out pretty basic but managed to put together a nice trio of T3i, T4i and EOS M that was good enough for a while. I've since sold the T3i and EOS M and bought an M50 - which I love. And it's frankly the weaknesses of the M50 that bring me here. These include issues with the side ports when trying to connect to gimbals and transmit and the infuriating decision to release the live view Beta arrangement for the USA only. My likely next full line up will be the 90D, the M6 mk ii and the M50. I don't need an optical view finder. I need a performer. If you've got arca swiss mounts, you can get thinner or position adjustable plates for the camera which enable you to fully access the battery/card dept. You also didn't mention the connectivity of the camera - which is surely a plus. I'll look elsewhere and see if anyone else can talk me out of it. Cheers!
I'm on the fence about this camera right now. I have M50 currently. If ONLY the screen was flip-out instead of flip-up this would easily tip the scales for me, but this type of screen is such a deal breaker for me. I love the video specs about the camera, but with this screen there is basically no reason picking Canon over Sony's a6400, which is the same price, has some clear advantages like battery life and sharper 4K, and it comes with built in EVF. IDK what was Canon thinking with this. Will be probably waiting for new M bodies hopefully by the end of this year.
I think you may be assuming that all users have the same needs. I own this camera and a Nikon, and I am coming to prefer the M6 II as my "walk-about" camera. The ergonomics work for me, and my kit came bundled with the EVF and an excellent 18-150 mm IS zoom at a reasonable price. I like the (uncropped) 4K video, and the firmware upgrade to 24 fps was a snap. There is an impressive variety of customization options, including back-button focus and 3 assignable dials. The built-in flash that is missing from similar cameras is really handy when I need some fill light. The dual pixel autofocus is impressive, even in video AF. The menus are easy to navigate, and the touch screen provides rapid access to virtually any menu option I might want. I was lucky to pick up a used Canon EF-M adaptor at a good price, and the new Sigma M mount primes expanded the lens options to match any competitor, including the Nikon Z50 with similar price and features. Admittedly, I rarely use the full 14 fps and have never used the 30 fps RAW burst mode, so the buffer limitations you are right to note aren't really an issue for me. So while I acknowledge your concerns, they haven't really compromised my enjoyment of the camera, and I'm really impressed with the images it produces.
The M50 doesn’t have 120 FPS in 1080 or 30 FPS in 4K. When in 4K the M50 looses the dual pixel autofocus. The M50 side flip screen can get in the way of the mic jack; relocating the mic mount on the M6 is a trivial matter. The jack on M50 is where it is, nothing to do about it. It’s always good to be fully aware of all the pros and cons of any choice, but for what I plan to use it for, the M6 Mark II still looks like the better camera. As for lens choice, the M50 and M6 are in the same boat.
@@MMaven I'm not of the money is no issue class, I'm of the money isn't the only issue mindset. I have the discipline to save a tad longer to get the item that best fits my needs. Buy once, cry once.
Michael I would love to see you do a "best camera" list for several options 1- best all around 2- best landscape 3- best FF and aps c for wildlife 4- best travel camera, maybe with a best and a first runner up, and in case no has said this thank you for being honest, even when you find fault with my brand I take it like a friend telling me what I need to hear 💖
Bought this camera used a couple of months ago in mint condition for 300 euro and I really love as my travel camera next to my hobby camera the 7D Mk2.
🤔🤔 I watched this video twice and still went and bought the kit for $999.99 @ best buy 😂😂!! The whole "EVF" thing is a non factor or, it shouldn't be a factor since we've been taking photo & video with our phones for years without a VF period!!! Either way, I got the camera and the 3 yr protection plan on it since it is an "Investment", and after 2 1/2 yrs, I'll say it's broken and buy something else, it's fine🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
I agree many things on ergonomics. Definitely canon could have done lot better in terms of usability like flipside display and joystick. Another worst part is this camera is replacing Canon M5 too which is heartbreaking but no other camera have deep buffer at this price point, there is a work around by using cRAW which improve the buffer vastly. I believe these things are expected in sub below 1000 dollar camera..But Title “do not buy this camera” is bit harsh.
Michael The Maven I respect ur own opinions but that’s not the point. These videos sounds like personal attack on canon. I’m a Fuji user and honestly this camera really not that bad like you u mentioned. Making big deal out of Very minor issues where many people doesn’t even care at this price point.
Mohan Krishna Personal attack on Canon? I just posted an overwhelmingly positive review on the 90D. I am absolutely willing to talk about the things I do not like about a camera and whether or not I would recommend it. This is a camera I just don’t recommend to people
Michael The Maven I respect ur opinions but well influencing someone not to buy is sounds like attack on canon. Im a Fuji user but i felt this video ethically not organic.
Totally respect your opinion and I am within the return period so decided to watch. I was very nervous about what you might unveil in this review though. lol. Canon doing stupid stuff by adding and removing features to intentionally nurf their cameras!! I KNOW, IT'S ANNOYING. CAN'T ARGUE WITH YOU HERE. Small Buffer: Not great but much better than the M50. 4K: actually supports dual pixel so big win over the M50. EVF location: This is something you'll know going in so not a big surprise. It's a little annoying because i do like the view finder but I knew this going in and i'm ok with this. Battery Life: Much better than M50. Burst Mode: If you press and hold half way waiting for the action, when it happens you just cue it up. BOOM. I think it's a cool and useful feature. C1 and C2 Programmable functions. Nice uptick over the M50. Sound Recording Level's shown in video. Again, win over the M50 but why canon can't add to the M50 is probably another game they like to play... Why not have a 720P at 120FPS that supports dual pixel and sound??? Clean HDMI output. I've heard it's only 8bit but saw someone with a ninja and it showed 10bit. I dunno but the first M50 didn't support this, i know the Mark II does. 30 min recording limit? why can't we move past this on all cameras??? I dont think that Tax is still in place. Battery and Mem Card blocked: M50 had the same issue but I worked around it my moding the mount plate. on the M6, i got a small cage and it mounts with Arca plate so again, this isn't an issue. Burst Mode export. In the Canon DPP4 software you can export all RAW images in the Burst file. Pretty easy. By the way, You taught me how to use the M50 so Thank you, thank you, thank you! Seriously. That was my first real camera and i thought I'd know what i was doing at first but quickly realized there was a lot i didn't know. So, i'll give you a pass on not liking the M6 Mark II.
It’s not that I don’t like it I think it’s a good camera I just don’t like it for the price with no built in EVF and some of the gimmicky advertising (example very short buffer). When the price comes down $200-300 it’ll be a steal of a camera
Sorry just have to say it but you sounded like someone who Canon refused to give a new camera to "review". Like those influencers who loves to ask for free stuff. Lol! Going on about what everyone knows is missing (and are mostly missing in other more expensive units too) is missing the whole point. Just supposin'....
Sorry, but I don't accept gear or free "press" trips from manufacturers, but there are plenty of those kinds of reviews out there if thats what you are looking for. (And yes they have offered). Im willing to talk about the negatives. Its a nice camera, just not worth $1200 for the basic set up.
This dude obviously bought the camera without even considering if it would be a good fit for him. I am just loving my m6ii. I use an external $250 boom mic. I have the 32mm lens, $479. I use the camera directly between 2 large monitors so the flip up screen is just perfect for checking the image framing. And I only use this for 4k video thru clean hdmi direct to capture card to provide an OBS overlay. This is perfect for me.
I just buy this camera, it's performance is excellent. After I watch this video, I agree some of issue mention in video, but almost all are small issue, not big deal. This camera is worth to own.
I love my Canon M6 Mark II together with speedbooster and 24-105mm. I also have regular adapter plus 50mm 1.8 and the kitlens. Im all set. Im using it on events and earning money with it. I will definitely buy another one if i need one. With both adapters i can use all of the EF and EFS lenses. I used the M50 before and by far I can say M6 mark II is way way better.
Michael, I agree with you totally. Moving from Canon to Fuji or Sony because this seems to be something that Canon does (check out the EOS RP and being forced to provide 24 FPS). The M50 is a great beginner's camera, but I bought what many reviewers said about it being great for blogging and streaming. Not so, no clean HMDI and other limitations make it frustrating. Thought, "hey I have the lenses, the M6 Mark II will be a great way to step up." Not so. Fixed a couple of challenges, but again I see some of the key features I need are not there or limited (120 fps but no autofocus?). I disagree with others who want the positives and negatives but not always, especially when there is this level of challenge. Sometimes you just gotta speak up and say what you mean. This was a shocking video, but I wish I would have seen something like this before I picked up the M50. Luckily I saw it before I purchased the M6 Mark II. Before other readers beat me up, check out the features that come STANDARD with the Sony 6400 and 6600 (Sony is currently the market leader). The endnote here is, once you know what you need, buy the camera that fits that no matter how tough it is to learn. But when you are a beginner, you rely on the reviews to give you the right info. Thank you, Michael.
Watched your video....I fail to understand how lowering the price to about $500 would make this a camera to buy! Seems like you really dislike many of the "features" - by the way, I agree with the things that you disliked; but lowering the price does not "fix" them.
Its a good point, but my take on it is this: Every camera has problems. The M50 and 90D have problems, for me it is about what you get for what you pay. As price goes down, its easier to overlook these issues. Im very careful to point out what they are- so no it doesn't change that, but what you pay for it does change.
It’s a larger can of worms. I’ve tried talking to many of them about the working relationships they have with manufacturers, and while most are not paid, and claim innocence / pure objectivity, deep down they know early access to gear will be cut off if they are overly negative (and this has happened). They also know if they gush about a new camera, they will get lots of likes and views for it, Because it makes those camera buyers feel good. I always try to be objective and honest and just state what I don’t like about camera gear - I acquire almost all of them on my own but I do get some rentals from lensprotogo.com - But whenever I am honest about the weaknesses of a camera if they tend to always be my most disliked videos
who is blogging and not using external audio other than people who haven't learned that is really the only way to go? I feel like those are not people getting a dedicated camera, they are using their phones to make tiktoc videos.
I disagree. Most cameras have a left eye shooter problem. I feel like you mostly focused on 2 areas which was the short buffer and cropped in 30 frames per second with the electronic shutter. Most cameras in this price range have issues with their buffer. A6400 has a larger buffer, but takes twice as long to clear the buffer. Also how often are you shooting 30 frames a second indoors? I feel like the crop is a limitation of the camera, but it’s for such rare situations like birds in flight or something. Also the lenses for this system are way cheaper. 11-22 regularly refurbished from canon at $279, 22 f2 $145. I think fuji have better apsc lenses, but they cost way more. Also saying this camera should be $500 is a joke. The m50 isn’t that cheap new and you’re recommending that over this.
Incorrect. Only cameras without a joystick & require square selection with the screen have the left eye problem. And yes, if canon is saying these two features are the strength and they both have major weaknesses, but don’t mention it...then it should be pointed out. I guess you haven’t heard of the XT30, which has all of these pluses and none of the issues.
I agree that the m50 is a better value. It is definitely pricey and probably should have been $700 body only, but to say it should be $500 is not realistic.
From your review I clearly understand you are neither a pro photographer or good reviewer. The "bad" features" you are pointing out are not the ones to consider the camera a good or bad purchase. It is nothing personal just my 2 cents opinion on your work.
@@MMaven That is not the reply I would expect from a more than 10 years TH-camr. You did some excellent videos but in this one you just missed it. And from the comments on this review looks like I am not the only one. I commented just to improve your work and dedication. I don't need confirmation. I am just an amateur (and not even a decent photographer).
I don't think you understand the real use case for this camera. If you think it is overpriced don't buy it but it is a better camera than the M50. It is an upgrade in many ways and that is what we pay for. Will the price go down, yes at some point but that is the way it is if you buy early. To me it is by far the best camera in the M line and most of your nit picks are just that and there are easy workarounds to them. I would like them here but it seems I am not alone with this and people have already hammered you on many of them. To me it seems you really just don't like the price which is fair as everyone has their own idea of budget. .
thank you for this video though i might not be one looking at/for a M6II though i 100% agree that there's a swell of certain creators that get to upload first day camera "review" - "first impressions" and rarely or at least not explicitly say they were sponsored (possibly sponsored by something else as a 'decoy" like squarespace and nothing wrong about squarespace but just observation) it became really weird hearing someone many months ago defending canon's decision to remove 24p from their camera line up, sure I COULD go for 30p instead but i wouldnt want to give my money and time to a company that "cripple hammer" their products - its a "disrespect" to their customers. BUT then again and maybe the main part of my comment/question is STILL which camera would be "best" for hybrid work when it comes to full frame brands? I personally am in no rush to upgrade and am waiting for the fuji H2 before making any decisions but i keep hearing that canon lens for mirrorless are one of the best but i dont exactly understand why exactly or comparing to sony lens. I think ill pass on Panasonic L mount where their whole system is rather expensive in comparison I THINK. (the idea im looking for is a main filming run and gun photo/video camera with a side smaller 2nd angle camera either for interview work or general video when I need a 2nd angle, still feel the SONY would be the one but i have many issues with the way they do things as well)
All great points. The press events have essentially ruined the photography review community on youtube. Ive spoken with many who go, and my impression is they do not realize they are being sponsored by the company, or do not want to bring themselves to saying it. Can you imagine: "This Review of the Canon M6ii was brought to you by Canon!" (huge conflict of interest) so they bend the disclosure "Canon invited us out" (being invited is very different than being materially sponsored) or skip disclosure all together. What this does is gives the viewer the impression this is an "organic review" when it isn't. In regards to your question, every camera has strengths and weaknesses. There are some great hybrid cameras out there, it really depends on what you do most. Prices on the Canon FF mirrorless have come down, I like the RP for portraits. I have friends who love the R for video (but doesn't make sense to me because of the crop). I think the best FF video camera for the money right now is the A7iii, but as you mention there are issues with color, screen, and menus. In the end you will have to buy something that fulfills your most important needs and overlook the shortcomings. Best wishes!
I want to upgrade from my G7x Mark II. A lot of reviews frown on the G7x Mark III so I didn't buy it. I was thinking of this M6 Mark II or the M50. I want to stay with Canon. What would you suggest to go with next? I just want something portable for backpacking and filming trips. Compactness and picture quality most important. Should I wait for the next version of the M50?
Yes I think the next version of the M 50 is going to be a homerun winner. If you needed something right now you can get a used M50 for about four $50-$500 And sell it when the next version comes out
you are absolutely right! these promotional videos are all biased one (looks like fake review/preview)because they get paid to do that. They share only good about it and that also on preproduction camera model. I already stop watching those preview videos. I luv watching your videos, even though it is bit delayed ( few weeks after release date), because they are unbiased and you share all about camera good and bad. Keep the good work going.
Bought this today, want the most MP to use for the 11-22mm lens so this is it. I dont machine gun pictures and I hate video so your points dont apply. Tilt screens are much easier for wide stills. The only criticism of the M6 I used to own is its a very very boring camera, like most canons I think.
And how much did you spend on it?
The going rate. Does it matter?
barlisbre of course. Look at the title. It’s a fine camera, just priced too high. I even mention it in the video.

Personally, I love the M100, because of its compactness and the bounceable flash, and the M50 because on occasion I what some better controls and an EVF, for me the M6 mk ii would probably the optimal solution and the best of these two
If this had a flip screen like the M50 I'd probably buy one. Unlike 24fps, they cant install a flip screen by firmware upgrade.
I agree. I don't think most Canon m6 users are using the camera like this. I know people who bought this camera because they like the way it looked.
perfect social cameras and travel companions on M6i and getting M6ii and on RP too...the compact size differences... does make a different on carrying it around.
Is is good for landscape if you don’t wanna carry a huge/burdensome camera with you. Looking for something better than my Iphone but I want it small and lightweight.
@@JSJ1978 Yes but avoid the 15-45mm lens it's a dog!.
Canon should be applauded for delivering this performance.
the buffer on the nikon z50 is bigger, it can shoot without crop in raw (11 fps with mecanic shutter) for at least 4 seconds
What about clear video footage for low light and regular natural light. I want to be able to live stream with my face but shoot footage of weight training in a rugged dim lit gym with mirrors. NFL athletes trained in the gym....it's rugged though and I want to capture just raw weight training.
@@Santiago.Ortiz.H how big the resolution can the nikon took? Oh well never mind no need to answer 😎
@@derekroberts5931 nobody wants to see that bro
I also think (but I'm not sure) that the a6400 lacks a cRAW option which the M6 II has (with no noticeable loss of quality in many situations) which turns the buffer from 26 shots to 42 which is much closer to the a6400 in the duration of which you can take pictures without stopping.
all of these issues are very small I have one of these cameras and these issues have not to bothered me at all
I completely agree with you, I. Bought the m6 mark ii over the 90d as the 90d was having focusing issues, m6 has non of them problems..
@@Stuffed007 totally agree with both of you. Happy with the M6 Mark ii.
Yes you did. It is mentioned.

Most cameras have good image quality. Usability and ergonomics and some features are more important. Sometimes though, the feature might be small size, so the ergos are gonna suffer potentially.

Here are some features why I updated from the Mark I:
(1) Instant GPS EXIF with the smartphone.
M6 Mark II is overpriced, but the main reasons could be
(1)Significantly softer 4k.
Bruh I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to notice that
For simpletons like me, thess drawbacks wont matter much.
I'm wondering if this M6 ii keeps shutting down and won't turn back on. A common problem with my M50.
Left eye problem is not a problem. You can set which portion of the LCD to use to move the AF point.

And, did anyone really think that Canon would never offer a firmware upgrade to give us 24 frames per second as they have just done?
question: what's a good alternative that can be adapted to canon EF lenses?
@@MMaven what is your left hand going to do when you want to focus using the joystick in the same situation?
Arthur Mermelshtein my left hand is under the lens. Right joystick aims squares.

i just make youtube videos in my room lol but as I grow and get older I may get into vlogging/want to change my content. I want a camera I can keep for at least another 2-3 years. M50, M6 or M6 Mark II?
Is the buffer speed being affected by the type of memory card you’re using? Is it fast enough?
A bit late but you can choose right or left eye function for AF in shoot menu 3 second from bottom.
But it is impossible to have everything without a huge budget hahaha Greetings from Spain!

a6000 is 5 years old.
Hi! Is it a good camera for wildlife photography using telephotos? Have you tried the 90D in comparison? Thank you
@@twothbeave Even with regards to pricing, the M6 Mk.ii and the 90D are basically identical IQ-wise and even spec-wise, but Canon still priced the M6 Mk.ii lower. So if anything the M6 Mk.ii is honestly a steal for what you pay.
b.lew_photography I bought it. I love it!
Don’t tell me sony didn’t pay you for this video
Not to mention, what good is a 36mp sensor if you don't have good enough native glass to resolve it?
TJ Krueger It’s actually pretty dang good point
Also continues shooting is not possible with the electronical shutter so no silent mode.
The hot shoe evf actually helps with left eye focus and big nose problem. The flip up screen does make horizontal shooting operation a bit faster. Compared with M50's build in evf, both have pros and cons.
Love this camera especially with the adapter and the wealth of quality glass available. Good glass and that 32mp sensor produce some stunning images.
I have OCPD and that test chart is crooked, annoys the heck out of me. The only dealbreaker I see is the cost. The rest of the stuff is pretty minor.
I believe I actually mentioned this in a video and gave a price that it would be worth it for
@@MMaven You did, no doubt about it.
Battlehawk yeah...I’m not sure what you are looking for. I mention all these things already
@@MMaven Seems we are miscommunicating a tad. Nevermind.
yea, camera is expensive at this point, but nothing you mention seems like dealbreaker to me...that tripod plate problem is not a problem either, just use smaller arca swiss plate, or just cut a bit from existing one as I did for my M100.
this videos seems focused on comparative weakness without weight strengths. Idk there is a camera at this price that does as well at 4k with as good AF. The RAW file things seems weird. Thanks for introducing that, I don't understand it yet. Idk about the 14fps raw burst compared to what fps it does RAW in a normal non-burst way.
Should I look at the 90d instead? Knowing eventually I want to be in the canon ecosystem ?
I would instead look towards the R-Series bodies because the EF systems (such as the 90D) are maturing and the RF eco-system is now their main focus. I would say that if you already had EF lenses then it would be fine, but if you're coming into Canon, it would be best to go with the ecosystem thats growing as the technology will continually advance and you will be able to make use of that newer technology.
Battery door, button presses, small inconveniences for the compactness & quality of this camera
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keeping it real. 👍🏿
A bit late but you can choose right or left eye function for AF in shoot menu 3 second from bottom.
Michael,
Good of you to identify these issues.
Craig Carlson yes- sewing lots of soft lenses on the 90D. It’s been a concern
I totally agree with your review. I returned this camera already it sucks for the price.
I don’t care about you or what you think 🤣
@@laurentl714 well, nobody cares about you too
Watching this 14 months after you posted it originally.
Hi Michael, what about the purple fringing in high contrast areas using wide aperture as f/1.8 or wider? I have this issue in my 80D.
It’s a lens issue and very common at wide apertures on lower end lenses. Stop it down to f4 and much of it should go away
@@MMaven but with this higher pixel density compared with the 80d, the 90d has the same issue? I have this issues with my 100 mm f2, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 stm
Fabio Gomes de Carvalho Monteiro it sounds like chromatic abberation. Did stopping down to f4 resolve the problem?
@@MMaven on the 50mm and 85mm ends at f2.5 and 100mm ends at f2.2. I think is more like purple fringing because it shows at high contrast. I have noticed on my wife's white t-shirt. I dont have a L lenses. I also have Nikon d610 and dont have these issues.
A6400, XT30, M6ii, G85, em5ii, Z50 how would you rank these sub-$900 cameras?

I got Canon EOS M50 + Kit Lens 14-45mm, Viltrox EF-M.2 0.71x Speed Booster Adapter (Updated Firmware v 14) + Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens. 👍 I'm doing great. No issue with adapter. My bro got the Viltrox adapter from US for me to India.
lots of cameras have... "left eye problem".....
How is the title misleading? I have substantiated my reasoning with facts and I believe this is a camera people should not buy for the price.
Well said the title is what frustrates me🙂👍
Are you saying I don’t have the right to my own opinion?
Actually don’t think you have watch the entire video I was very specific pointing out the problems I had with it and even at the end mentioned at what price it would be worth it. Maybe you didn’t catch that part
I think anybody who endorses this camera with their name is making a huge mistake.
You got to be kidding! This guy is delusional.
Cheers!
what about IBS??
And you can get a used m50 for just over $400
Michael The Maven This comes down to use case. Your use case favors one, and mine the other. The cost is not always the determining factor.
Erica Pelz if your are of the “money isn’t an issue” class, then of course. But the whole premise of this video is bang for the buck.

Michael nothing wrong with Canon it's a workhorse brand for a lot of people, I use mostly Sony stuff but they all have their strengths and minuses

So sensor it's 32 or 18 megapixels?
It's 32.5mp using normal 14fps High Speed Shooting mode. It is a cropped 18mp for the special 30fps Raw Burst Mode.
🤔🤔 I watched this video twice and still went and bought the kit for $999.99 @ best buy 😂😂!! The whole "EVF" thing is a non factor or, it shouldn't be a factor since we've been taking photo & video with our phones for years without a VF period!!! Useful review!!! How do you like the new Nikon APSC mirrorless?
I agree many things on ergonomics. Definitely canon could have done lot better in terms of usability like flipside display and joystick. Another worst part is this camera is replacing Canon M5 too which is heartbreaking but no other camera have deep buffer at this price point, there is a work around by using cRAW which improve the buffer vastly. I believe these things are expected in sub below 1000 dollar camera..But Title “do not buy this camera” is bit harsh.
I am entitled to my own opinion and therefore my own titles it’s not a camera I can recommend or endorse

Michael The Maven I respect ur opinions but well influencing someone not to buy is sounds like attack on canon. Im a Fuji user but i felt this video ethically not organic.

what about the Nikon z50
@@MMaven yea. I totally understand.

8m currently deciding between this one and the Fuji Xt30
Got one...love it...simple...light...small...easy menu....nice quality of image from video
Hi thanks for the organic video I watched this out and after I decide to buy this camera
Can you do a nikon z50 review
Love the outro vid, hehe

Watched your video....I fail to understand how lowering the price to about $500 would make this a camera to buy! Seems like you really dislike many of the "features" - by the way, I agree with the things that you disliked; but lowering the price does not "fix" them.
Its a good point, but my take on it is this: Every camera has problems. The M50 and 90D have problems, for me it is about what you get for what you pay. As price goes down, its easier to overlook these issues. Im very careful to point out what they are- so no it doesn't change that, but what you pay for it does change.
It's an easy concept. If they lowered the price to $1 It would be a tremendously amazing buy. $100 = still brilliant. Get it?
I watched a lot of those videos you mentioned. NONE of them talked about the flash issues. It's almost like they were paid to not bring it up.
I’de argue that the camera for blogging, is for users that don’t use external audio. Like you said, size and weight
who is blogging and not using external audio other than people who haven't learned that is really the only way to go?
PS - you can find m50s all day long on eBay for $400 or less
I agree that the m50 is a better value. It is definitely pricey and probably should have been $700 body only, but to say it should be $500 is not realistic.
From your review I clearly understand you are neither a pro photographer or good reviewer. The "bad" features" you are pointing out are not the ones to consider the camera a good or bad purchase. It is nothing personal just my 2 cents opinion on your work.
Sorry no confirmation bias here
@@MMaven That is not the reply I would expect from a more than 10 years TH-camr. You did some excellent videos but in this one you just missed it. And from the comments on this review looks like I am not the only one. I commented just to improve your work and dedication. I don't need confirmation. I am just an amateur (and not even a decent photographer).
Only thing in this video that made me think twice about buying this camera is the lack of lens. I do not care at all about the video side of it
I don't think you understand the real use case for this camera. To me it seems you really just don't like the price which is fair as everyone has their own idea of budget. .
"To me it seems you really just don't like the price which is fair" lol ok. Thanks!
thank you for this video though i might not be one looking at/for a M6II though i 100% agree that there's a swell of certain creators that get to upload first day camera "review" - "first impressions" and rarely or at least not explicitly say they were sponsored (possibly sponsored by something else as a 'decoy" like squarespace and nothing wrong about squarespace but just observation)
it became really weird hearing someone many months ago defending canon's decision to remove 24p from their camera line up, sure I COULD go for 30p instead but i wouldnt want to give my money and time to a company that "cripple hammer" their products - its a "disrespect" to their customers.
Thank you so much for all of your detailed and useful information. You are a very good and dedicated instructor, I seriously appreciate that!
If you needed something right now you can get a used M50 for about four $50-$500 And sell it when the next version comes out
Chad Roberts iPhone 11 pro is the best right now.
you are absolutely right! these promotional videos are all biased one (looks like fake review/preview)because they get paid to do that. They share only good about it and that also on preproduction camera model. I already stop watching those preview videos. I luv watching your videos, even though it is bit delayed ( few weeks after release date), because they are unbiased and you share all about camera good and bad. Keep the good work going.
Thank you Sachin!
I agree Sachin. I stopped watching most of them too. Michael's training videos are pretty good too.
Bought this today, want the most MP to use for the 11-22mm lens so this is it. I dont machine gun pictures and I hate video so your points dont apply. Tilt screens are much easier for wide stills. The only criticism of the M6 I used to own is its a very very boring camera, like most canons I think.
Still I can use this camera. With 22mm lens. Photos only. Compact carry. Will wait for a price drop.
