    Great knife from a great maker. Winkler have mastered the heat treat on their 80CrV2 steel. Some may look down on 80CrV2 but it's tough, holds a decent edge and sharpens up well. Glad to hear you want to use this knife - it wants to be used - it demands to be used!! Look after it and you have the start of a great family heirloom. Sharp blades all.

      Has anyone figured out how to sharpen this knife. The edge angle is a mystery.

    I have the knife in the rubberized material, and it grips so well. The sheath is superb. It reminds me of a sap from the old days. The coating protects from corrosion. No issues there. I did something different from my other knives with this. I sharpened the entire main bevel, not just the micro-bevel. The edge is very sharp and easy to sharpen. This is one of my favorites. I'll probably get one with the wood handle one day.

    • @barrysblades
      @barrysblades  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's funny, because I'm going to do the opposite and get a rubberized handle next time. Great suggestion on sharpening the main bevel

      I have a Winkler II belt knife WASP. IMHO it is a close tie with the Cold Steel Master Hunter 3V with an aftermarket Patriot cross draw leather sheath. But the Winkler Ii belt knife has a slight edge IMHO.

    I have a field, the wooden handle is carved with very beautiful Indian patterns, but the 80crv2 steel is very easy to rust, which is very bad. After sleeping in the mountains for one night, when I wake up in the morning, I will find that the dew makes the knife rust, a lot of rust ! Compared with ka-bar's bk9, ka-bar's 1095 steel will also rust, but it will be much better, but Winkler's knives can be sharpened very sharp! These two knives were mailed from the United States to China for me by courier. The procedures were very troublesome and cost me a lot of money, but I have been using them!

    • @barrysblades
      @barrysblades  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's definitely the downside of steels like that. I just keep a little oil in my EDC bag to keep a film on them

    • @ZiTW-qj5zm
      @ZiTW-qj5zm ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try to use nuts, such as walnuts or peanuts, to smear the blade, which will have an anti-rust effect😁

    • @texasviking1
      @texasviking1 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to maintain carbon steel. If you don’t like to have to maintain a knife like that I would suggest getting a stainless steel knife. But a good knife will rust😉

    The blade length needs no tape measure. Just is it long enough for your purpose? The handle however ? The tape needs to come out so your audience knows what the grip length is. CRV is chrome vanadium . CRV 80. ??. But its a good knife you have theere.

    Great design, not great materials. Winkler's sheath is the best but 80crv2 steel is weak and rusts easily. The cost is justified only by investing in anti-rust coating or using high-alloy steel that is resistant to rust.😐

    • @ulbushcrafting6592
      @ulbushcrafting6592 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Understanding steels and their pros and cons is important: easy to sharpen, difficult to sharpen, holds or not holds an edge, rust easily or not are all factors to consider as you get more and more into knives. But most important- HEAT TREAT!

    • @pubplays368
      @pubplays368 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      80crv2 is the second or third toughest carbon steel. Nothing about it is weak lmao. You must be confusing it with Chinese carbon steel.

    I love Winkler, but to call the factor edge "very sharp" isn't exactly accurate. Mediocre performance on cardboard in your video. Granted that will vary per blade and easy to touch up. I couldn't go with the maple, as much as I like the look (and the tribal). Heavy outdoor use, skinning, etc....shy away from wood. Personally their hawks are better than their knives, as I now prefer magnacut for my knife.

  • @johnmutton799
    @johnmutton799 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Way over priced! There are knives out there, the same steel and better materials, and half the price! Rip off!

  • @aussieb1rd95
    @aussieb1rd95 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well it certainly is a sweet looking knife, just two issues but they are personnel ones, I like originality and after looking at their site the Tribal Maple is used across a variety of their knives so it's not unique, It's also an option. Price omg $350 US, that's like $525.50716 Australian Dollars, And If I choose the Tribal Maple the price goes up to $577.55 Au, and then there is shipping, which could be almost as much as the knife, getting expensive for an Aussie. Hmmmm shipping, I tried to add one to my basket to work out shipping, no add to basket button, blurb says no payment required till knife is ready to ship, WTF how do I work out shipping. Now your review, you said you did a lot of research, hmmm, On their site they quote that blade length is 91/2 inches not 93/4 as you state. Also the sheath is lined with Boltaron®with leather cover not Kydex as you claim, come on dude, research, I'm just a casual passerby who watched your video and picked up these mistakes, did they give you the knife as a freebee to spruke their wares. Ok Pros: beautiful knife and amazing looking web site. Cons: Way too many options so no genuine originality, cant get a shipping cost, wait period is 4 to 5 months, no off the shelf knifes ready to ship, And most likely if I went thru all the bull of ordering a knife they would most likely come back with we don't sell to Australia, had it happen heaps. But thanks for the video.

    It’s full tang but something that I don’t see anywhere else but Winkler knives something that only the best old blacksmiths do even on small blades like that is distal tapering of the handle to perfectly balance the blade leaving the strength exactly where it’s necessary and zero “extra” weight ….incredible and a lot of extra work !
