I think a lot of people discount the fact that all the big revivals have massive stars. I don't think this conversation can be had until we have a revival that only has Broadway names attached and see how that does. Funny girl was a flop until the big name was brought in.

    Parade is a great example.

The Deaf West Revival of Spring Awakening in 2015 certainly lives up (or even surpasses) the original Broadway run. Lea Micheal's voice is beautiful, of course, but it simply can't compete with the utterly insane choreography of the Revival and the inventive use of ASL to heighten the message of the story.

A revival that I think really far surpassed the original production by breathing in new life and taking the show to new heights was the 2014 revival of Pippin

I thibk with ticket prices being so high people are probably more willing to spend a lot of money on something familiar

With the revival of Chicago, it was just right time right place. That's why I think it has lasted so long. It's more relevant today then it was when it first premiered.

Well.... it would always be wonderful to be "in the room where it happens", wouldn't it? In the cases of Sondheim ("SWEENEY TODD", MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG", etc.), Sondheim was always, at least, FORTY YEARS AHEAD in terms of form, content, and it took the audience that long to catch up!! Same thing with Kander & Ebb's "CHICAGO". What was dark, seedy, and distasteful in 1975 was NOW, relevant, relatable and oddly timeless by 1996... So it's a HUGE HIT!... FINALLY!

I wonder if all this still holds true after the Cabaret reviews…

I will say though, that as a writer its really disheartening to know that my new musicals probably wont be successful until they are revived lol and thats a huge if...

Hi Kathrine Quinn you vids are the most insightful into life on Broadway and why they succeed and don’t and you are one of my many inspirations for being in musical theatre.

i thought Chicago would be closed already but can stay open with stunt casting. Love Robyn Hurder is back in the musical.
Josh did get Terrific reviews when he was in comet. Annaleigh very well known even adults from late 60 year old to 90 year olds know of her. If one or both were out people wanted to get their money back and come back again. Because both were pictured on the marquee.

Most of the revivals I've see, haven't really lived up to the original. One exception (from what I've see online) might be Tommy. I have a connection to that show because I was up for it a lot. My friend's husband also built the original projection wall. I think with today's technology, the projections are going to be incredible. It may even surpass the original. We'll have to wait and see.

28 Years later and I'm still bitter about the Chicago revival. I saw the revival the third week into its run. Looking at the stage, I couldn't help but think, "They've dumbed down the set, the costumes, everything --- just so they can keep touring costs to a minimum." And honestly, 28 years later, I still am angry that we don't have a full set and costumes.

Hey! I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but I personally wasn't enthusiastic about Shucked because I go to visit the big city to enjoy the big city experience and it seemed counter to that to then turn around and walk into a show that is aggressively rural.
It's like when I moved to Chicago back in the '90s and my co-workers asked me to go line dancing with them. I remember saying, "I moved here to get away from that s***."

I'm surprised it was Sweeney and not Merrily that jump started this for you seeing as Merrily's original run was a huge flop. BTW, how did the OG Sweeney take 8 Tony Awards if critics weren't feeling it?

I think Star Casting and exposure to general public (movies, local licensing) impacts revival ticket sales..also tweaking the original (gender bending Company) makes it attractive to musical super fans

You used the wrong Playbill for the original Sweeney Todd
