Im with you rudy. Ive been working as much as i can and putting as much as i can into etfs and cardboard.
I've been buying sports cards my entire life. I stopped buying high end stuff in the summer of 2020 and three years later I'm buying again as prices tanked. History repeats itself.
All this being said with Bear Stearns gear makes it perfect. Go forth and do great things or fail.
I was in Japan last week and went to 8 LGS. Was interesting to see the inventory distribution:
30% Yugioh
20% Vice
10% Pokémon
40% Magic, OP, Dragonball and other
There is 1 set of Pokémon that has not doubled in price in 5 years. It is Crimson Invasion. I think it is still slightly below $200

You said you were able to get a better position on more magic products since wizards is doing bad but on the players side of things I like it because since magic has had problems I've been able to get really good old and new cards this past year for cheaper then ever and I would never of had a chance to play with things like rhystic studies or other over powered cards since they used to be so expensive but now everything seems affordable. It's more opportunity for us new guys.
Rudy mostly talks about old products usually when he says invest he has Alpha/Beta/Duallands in mind.
The collectible comic market has pretty much bottomed out, yet now it's stabilizing and sales are ramping up. Overall that market is up ~15-25% over where it was in 2018-2019, before the "Big Comics Boom" of 2020-2021. That makes sense, we are where we should be, following the rate of inflation, as if the 100-200% Boom never happened. There are exceptions, some big key issues haven't fallen much, if at all, and are still near their all-time highs, but those are cases of true scarcity.
If someone wants to get into Silver and Bronze Age key comics for investment, for an average 4-7% year-over-year, that time is now. No, it's not a steady 4-7%, more like 5%, 0%, 15%, -5%, 0%, 10%, etc. but you get what I mean.
Honestly the current weiss market has been great. I don't have the space for many boxes but the SR/SSR have been so easy to buy and get at a great price its wild

@@ClipPointCam It is a COLLECTIBLE game, also nice straw man I never said it should be a get rich quick scheme, but that cards should retain value and not crash to 10% or 20% of what you paid for them. Guess what this game is A LOT more affordable when your cards stay at the price you bought them for since you can use your collection to buy new decks. The reason a lot of people went out of standard is that it was way more expensive in the long run then modern. So people switched to modern then the same started happening in modern. This has nothing to do with investors since no investor woulkd invest in standard, and hardly anybody invested in modern either except for sealed magic.

Rudy, I been a numbers and strategy guy for 3 vps, (aka doing their jobs). I can say they care about 1 thing, making the board happy, and the board cares about 1 thing, good quarterly numbers. Guess how you get good quarterly numbers? Business decisions based around keeping investors happy are short, sweet, and destructive to the business (sort of like cutting off your leg to loose weight) I will give you a brief list of what we have been doing each quarter to hit these numbers that are not ""Mistakes"" they are completely intentional. 1. (we did this one about 3 times) switched several product lines to cheap Chinese supply, I told them that it will destroy the brand in the long term, but they didn't care they wanted that great quarter. 2. (we did this one about 3 times) Switched 401k accounts for our different subsidiary companies, took away profit sharing (had about an average 15% match), replaced with 9% match, then a year later replaced that with 3% match 3. (we did this a few times) sell products at a loss to our subsidiaries, the subsidiaries appear to have growth, next year we put the losses into the main company and do this just to make it hard for the board to figure out wtf is going on. 5. We establish employee bonuses on a system they have little control of, Sales guy get bonuses based on how much is shipped, then we just run super lean in production so they NEVER get their bonus. Production get bonuses based on earnings, but we can force them to buy products at a loss so that subsidiary is not profitable, or buy new equipment so they run at a loss (machines can cost 100-500k a piece, sometimes more..) These are just a few things, I just find it fumy because wizards is clearly playing the corperate game now, the brand longevity is not the priority, keeping the investors (who have no clue how to run a business) happy.

Plot twist: Rudy’s the one who bought out metazoo wilderness
I think with metazoo wilderness, whoever is buying bought at large quantities at the bottom in hopes of pulling lottery cards, being green man or bronze silver or gold tickets. Also prism aura is reserve list and a very highly playable card going for a premium on third party sites. That’s the only reasons I can think of.
Blimey just looked at the Metazoo Wilderness thing. You'd think sub $100 Nightfall would've scared investors off. I suppose Wilderness is a cheap gamble at $50ish a box. The boxes were sold in several big chunks so it's definitely one person or group.
I was able to get all 10 duals now because of this market. And some other RL cards. I'm happy. I've also scooped up some cold foil FAB cards.

The opportunity hasn't just in been MTG, but investing in general. If you could stomach buying and then 'losing value' immediately after - and you kept buying - you're in a position to come out with significant gains in due time.

It's kind of wild thinking about it like that. The more they screw up the better it is for investors. Prices get destroyed and negativity spreads and the more positions you can easily make with almost lower risk than before (in the case of sealed modern under retail prices)

I paid $1000 shipped for a case of set boosters and all the commander decks for LOTR from an honest LGS. I absolutely hate these ballooned prices for a chase card that’s already curling before packaging….
Wouldn’t companies just setting MAP pricing on new product for a set time limit help fix this problem? Companies like Pokémon and Magic would just have to police retailers which is very doable. Then you could set the price to retail and train consumers that MSRP is the standard. After maybe 3 months later have the ability markdown?

So glad i held onto Genesis Battle of Champions, (and bought some more) before they got sold and is coming out with new sets again. Same for Weiss, FAB, Sorcery, LegionsRAW, and Vanquishers, Final Fantasy, force of Will (for dirt cheap), digimon (first few sets), (Cyberpunk during the lows) But to be fair my focus was always my day job. these boxes as just a nice to have sort of thing.

It's econ 101. Buy low sell high. In a market where you can be fairly confident that it will bounce back, always buy when the bottom drops out of "long term staples"

The only thing that is immune to this is casual videogame collecting. not the high end sealed stuff, just people wanting to get PS2 games and NES games and GameCube games they like. These things go up forever or become stable. They never crash. they never will crash. The Wind Waker for GameCube will never be a $10 game at retail. Haunting Ground will never be a $50 game that every other retro store has.
