I'm 43, and I remember this song!! Making me feel very nostalgic. My older brother would play this, and I listened to everything he did. He was my hero..Unfortunately my Brother passed away at the age of 36 in 2005. Thank you for playing this.

Before becoming a musician Greg taught English at the University of Cal, Berkeley. He later went on to marry singer Freda Payne who had a big hit called Band Of Gold back in 1970. Greg’s mother pushed him to be a musician at a young age teaching him how to sing and play piano. After teaching he followed his dream and co wrote and song Shake You Down. I met Greg back in 1985 before this song was released he would frequent my restaurant on Staten Island by the SI Ferry. He live on SI because it was cheaper and easy to take the ferry to his Manhattan studio. I would continue seeing and talking to Greg for about 6 months before this song was released. He did tell me he signed with Columbia records and was about to release and album featuring Shake You Down. Once the album was released the song became an instant hit and I never saw or heard from him again!

I remember this song when it came out (in I think 1986). I absolutely loved this song. I had the single, and I listened to it all the time along with Lionel Richie and Billy Ocean. Sure, I loved 80's hair metal, but there was something about that old school Soul/R&B that you felt every word. Man, those were the days!

  • @vwestlife

In the video they show a real harmonica being played, but the sound was actually generated by a Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer keyboard, just like in Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It".

This was Gregory Abbott's biggest hit! It was released in 1986 and was full of that sexy soulful vibe and was a huge hit! It had that sexy talk in the middle like many R&B songs of the era. I was a teen when it came out, however, this song is something I would listen to still today.

I was 18 when this was out in 1986. I've still got the original 45 RPM record. If you listen to the old record you can hear where the background instrumental which was a continuous loop ended and started again. It barely perceptible but on the old recording you can hear it. I love all the little imperfections in the old stuff. I miss this smooth sound too.

Abbott's parents were from Venezuela (mother) and Antigua (father). In college, he majored in psychology and minored in music and dramatic arts. He holds a Master's degree. He taught English at Univ. of CA at Berkeley before he decided to become a professional musician.

The song was released in 1987. Gregory Abbot was born and raised in Harlem. Professor Abbott was a college professor of English and Music at UC Berkeley and Stanford. He married R&B singer Freda Payne. He wrote this song for her and they had a child. I think he went back to teaching. He's about 70 or 80 now, he might be retired.

This music video played a lot on MTV back in the 80s. The melody in the chorus reminds me of the chorus in "Cherish" from Kool & the Gang that I actually thought they sang it the first time I heard it.

Dude! This is out of late 80’s like 1987, which was heavy video era. Sound like he patterned his style similar to Freddie Jackson. The beat & groove to Jackson’s ‘You Are My Lady’ is similar. I recall it being basically an R&B hit that also got pop radio air play. Highly self produced, as he performed most of the instrumental parts on keyboards & drums. In fact I think I ended up playing on a recording in a home studio in Long Island, NY where Abbott did his tracks for that song.

Oh yes I remember this quite well. 1986 my graduating year, if you were lucky back then you got a chance to get on the dance floor, slow dance sing or say "girl I been watching you" ask for her number, be sincere but still be cool! And if she turned you down at least you could have the DJ play *Robbie Neville's* song *C'est La Vie* (which I must add is a great song) and laugh at yourself, together or with all your friends. As always looking forward to your next reaction peace ☮️ and blessings!!
