Fun fact: Greg was married to Freda Payne and they have one son name Gregory Abbott, Jr. Freda was a Motown sensation with her biggest hit being Band of Gold ( which you should react to). I also got to meet Greg in 1985. He lived in an apt building near the Staten Island ferry which made it easy for him to go back and forth to his studio in Manhattan. He used to frequent my restaurant through the mid 80’s and we would have conversations on what music he was writing and than in 1986 he came out with this unbelievable one hit wonder.

Hi Jayvee! This is one of those rare 80’s songs which is just perfect in every way. The pitch, vocals, tone and catchy melody. This song has it in the bucket load. Just a beauty in the ears to cherish. So glad I am an 80’s child 🎼🎼

Tender memories from this period. I remember when my mother used to play her cassette tape with this song. Her eyes sparkled. As a kid, I used to make my homework or play with my toys while I watched her singing and dancing alone - without understanding what was going on: she was dreaming awaken. There was a kind of poetry in those moments. They always were peaceful and beautiful scenes.

My parents are fans of Gregory Abbott! I had lots of childhood memories of this song playing at family gatherings or playing on the radio. I recommend checking out, "I'll prove it to you."
This still gets played on the classic hits radio down here in NZ. His 'Got The Feeling It's Over' was also played a bunch when it was released. Loved both songs then, love them still now.

I heard this tune at the age of 14 years old I’m now 49 and still this song moves me after all these years. Al Jarreau is the man you need to be listening to.
Al Jarreau had a lot more hit songs than Abbott, but he never had a number one on the Billboard Hot 100, like Abbott did. "Shake You Down" made it to number one in 1986.

He was born and raised in Harlem. Professor Abbott was a college professor of English and music at UC Berkeley and Stanford. He married R&B singer Freda Payne. He wrote this song for her and they had a child. I think he went back to teaching. He's about 70 or 80 now, he might be retired.

There is definitely not enough reactions to R&B/Soul music from the 70s and 80s. R&B/Soul (and jazz) was my jam in the 80s and 90s, so when I see someone reacting to it, I'm all over it. SUCH good music, and it's super cool to see young people discovering it.
