I'm so glad to hear you all made it through without major damage. When I saw how bad hurricane Helene impacted NC, I wondered how you & the family had faired. As for hubby & I, we lost our barn roof during hurricane Milton here in Florida. The storm hit at night. Night storms are always the worst because you can hear all the wind & damage, but cannot see what is happening. It's more unsettling than being able to connect the sound with the views. The metal roof sheeting that was whipping around in the dark had me so frightened that my horses were being cut up by it, but thankfully, they made it through the storm without any major injuries. They were very skittish after the hurricane. It took a few weeks for them to settle back down. We lost a large old oak in the yard as well as some trees in our wooded acreage. The tack room contents, including saddles, saddlepads, & leather reins were waterlogged. We lost hay, but feed stayed dry in containers. Our house did just fine, as did we. We lost power in our small community for 11 days & the main road leading to our private road was washed away, so that only atv's & such could traverse it for 6 days until dirt & filler was hauled in by the truckloads. I'm a native Floridian, so hurricanes are nothing new to me, but I must say, Milton was the worst we've experienced in 17 years where we live in Central Florida. Hubby has begun putting new roof on our barn. This time we're ditching the tin roof & our area. Most barns with metal roofs peeled off like a sardine can. The metal sheets that came off completetly were so mangled & were blown from pasture & into our yard & side ditches. So grateful none made contact with horses or our house. We too are feeling blessed not to have been harmed nor fair as bad as many during those two back to back hurticanes.
