  • Following the GingerMan race, the www.MAPDataSystems.com mustang headed to @baucommotorsports to undergo a major transformation to an 18” wheel/tire platform.
We considered moving to the GT350 mustang braking system which would yield a 19” platform. The GT350 brakes are very good and there are a handful of GT500’s that have been converted to the GT350 system for HPDE and Time Trial events. However, HPDE and Time Trial cars run 2-3 laps at full speed and then back-off to cool things down, or to exit the track in the case of Time Trial events. We run in @drivenasa sprint races which means we are running at 100% for 30 minutes or more. No back-off and cool-down in sprint races. Given the additional speed and weight of a GT500 (think about the kinetic energy equation), the GT350 braking system wasn’t going to be good enough. Plus, an 18” platform yields less unsprung weight, less rotational mass, better suspension geometry, and better tire options, all of which produce significant performance improvements.
The problem was that there are no examples out there for how to change a GT500 to an 18” platform with brakes capable of stopping a 4,000-pound car at speeds of 160mph over and over again for 30 minutes. This simply has not been done before by any racing team on any continent. Accordingly, MAP reached out to leading racing teams and racing manufacturers (who would later become marketing partners) for advice. Of course, “that can’t be done” was a common response. Fast-forward 6 months after much coordination with the engineering talent at Apex Wheels, Baucom Motorsports, Brembo, and Race Technologies, the #MAPDataSystems GT500 mustang is at Baucom Motorsports becoming the first modern GT500 race car to run an 18” wheel/tire platform.

We also considered running the AP Racing Radi-cal front kit which would enable an 18" wheel/tire platform. We run this brake kit on our #86 GT350 Mustang race car and are very happy with it. However, the Radi-cal brakes and rotors are just too small and light weight to dissipate all the heat generated by the weight and speed of a GT500.
