- Deep clean with me! A HUGE minimalist makeup collection declutter is long overdue for 2020. This is my follow up attempt to my first "becoming a minimalist" makeup collection organization, storage and declutter I did in 2019. I'm using this quarantine time to do some Spring deep cleaning of my 2020 makeup collection.

Thank you, Rachel ❤️ I just feel like it's so wasteful to just throw everything away in the name of minimalism LOL. So I'd rather take my time and intentionally pare things down. I'm glad you agree :)
I think the whole minimalism trend that has been going on lately on youtube has just been grotesquely turned into an opportunity for many people to justify buying more products. The whole principle behind Minimalism is to reduce over consumption, i.e. not take more than you need.
It's not an aesthetic and definitely not meant to be treated as a means to enable you to buy more. One of the joys of minimalism is that it makes you more conscious of your spending habits, and also has the potential to greatly reduce your environmental impact, eg. that tube of lipgloss or whatever is just going to sit in a landfill if you don't use it up just because you got bored of it. Minimalism shouldn't hurt, if you really like those colourpop eyeshadows, keep them! Don't just get rid of them because it fits into the aesthetic of all your makeup fitting into a makeup organizer, also getting rid of them will just give you another excuse to buy something like it again. It also serves as a reminder to yourself to take more thought and consideration when you purchase something if you're really going to use them up fully or just get bored when something newer and shiny comes along. This isn't a personal attack, I am by no means a minimalist, this is just an observation that people are decluttering just to make space for more frivolous spending.
I completely agree and def did not take this as a personal attack! The reason I'm doing this declutter is because I don't use most of what I have (and a lot of it is SO old), and that makes me sad/uncomfortable/anxious to have a lot of products just sitting there that I never touch. But I absolutely agree. It has become an aesthetic and has become a marketing buzzword for companies to try to get you to "buy into" minimalism, etc. Those Colourpop shadows are years old and I haven't reached for them once in the past year or so; this is my way of being more conscious about the items I actually reach for vs. just keeping stuff b/c I might use it one day in the future, ya know? I think it's more responsible to give something half-used away to someone who WILL finish it before it goes bad, vs. me keeping it for a day that may never come and then it going bad and being wasted without ever being finished or used.
I promise I am extremely conscious of where my makeup goes when I'm done with it (whether it's given to a friend/family member, sent to Project Beauty Share, recycled curbside or if I send it to a specific Terracycle recycling box). But absolutely agree that as a society and as a community on YT as a whole, we need to be more conscious of our blind spending and consumerism. I really loved Kimberly Clark's video on consumerism, have you watched that? She somehow has a way of being hilarious and totally on point with her topics all at the same time.
Also--hope you didn't take this as me being defensive about anything. I really am very conscious of my carbon footprint in my daily life, so wastefulness and overconsumption really does get to me, and I hope to find a way to work my otherwise low-waste lifestyle into this YT channel too. Super open to any video suggestions you may have, because I was brainstorming the other day how to kinda make this channel more in line with my own ethics and beliefs vs just "here's a review of some corporation's new lip set that you should buy! here's me doing free marketing for them!" LOL.

@nikibowe I definitely agree to an extent. I think one problem that's not often talked about is this mythical notion of a "perfect, curated makeup collection", and also how FOMO plays into it. Trying to curate a small collection can actually turn into buying more for some people because they're searching for the best, most perfect makeup products.

Mimimlism isn’t about getting rid of things for the sake of it, it’s about only having things that matter to you. It’s also most definitely a journey and takes time. I hope to be there one day. You are doing a great job

I recently threw away 90% of my makeup and I still don't think I've got a minimal collection. I find it hard to let go of stuff, even expired stuff. What worked for me in the end was I pulled everything out and put back in the draws only what I really reach for on a daily or weekly basis (bc I don't wear as much makeup to work as I do when I'm off) The rest went into a bag in my guest room and I kept it there for 4 months. It was nice and comforting because I knew I could go and get anything I wanted at anytime and that took the pressure off me greatly. I kid you not, I didn't get one single item from that bag, I've been enjoying putting my makeup on more, I use more of what I kept and getting ready is so much easier and pleasurable without the visual clutter. Finally I threw it away yesterday (even then I had this sinking omg what if I want that 4yr old purple lipstick crazy feeling) Now it's finally gone I feel 1000x better.
I sooo feel ya! It makes me feel SO much better getting rid of stuff that I don't use. It's like it weighs your energy down or something. I try to give them to my friends & fam when I can so they don't go to waste :) thanks for watching!
I think you should keep the two funky colors. You do not want to get tired of wearing the same colors and not have any variety. 😋

Never let anyone else dictate what is minimalist "enough". Minimalism isn't about having a set number of items in your possession, it's about removing what's not important to you, and keeping what is important. It's about changing your mindset, and your way of consumption. If you already have a product, keep it if you want to use it. But then when it's empty, really consider if you want to purchase it again! Even if using up something slows down the process, it's worth it. It gives you time to consider your values, and it's less wasteful. :)
Absolutely agree! I get really overwhelmed and stressed out when I have a bunch of products just sitting there that I don't use. and a lot of this stuff is like... super old LOL. But I totally agree with you. I think the stuff I decluttered is stuff that would just sit there and rot b/c i'm the kind of person that, when i decide i don't like/won't use something, I prob won't ever reach for it again LOL.
But i promise you that everything I decluttered is being disposed of responsibly! I'm either giving it to someone who WILL use it before it goes bad, sending it to project beauty share, or curbside recycling it (where accepted). A tip that might be helpful is whenever you use a product or brush put it in another place (a separate container or something similar) and then in 3/4 weeks time have a look at what products/brushes you haven’t used and it might help put things into perspective and give you a better idea 🤗

This was fun and relaxing to watch … thank you! I'm the opposite of you - the ONLY thing I wear is eyeshadow/mascara, and sometimes a lip color - so I got rid of all face products (blush, foundation, primer, concealer). All I have left now is 5 bullet lipsticks, one liquid lip, one open mascara, and 9 palettes! I love it - it's only what I love and use.

What i recommend is multitasking with products - have a blush you like but don’t wear? Use it as eyeshadow! Especially cream products - they’re great for multitasking (blush - eyeshadow, blush, lip color. Highlighter - highlighter, eyeshadow, lip highlight. Bronzer - bronzer, eyeshadow, lip color). I love using my products in many ways!
For me, I like to have a variety of products, but the main thing that limits my collection is asking myself “do I have the same shade somewhere?” Or “can I make a similar look with what I have?” And my makeup taste has changed a lot over the years, so products come and go in my collection as well. I recently finally decluttered my depotted ABH Modern Renaissance palette that I hadn’t touched in more than a year.
Yeah it's nuts how much our tastes in makeup change over time. It all comes and goes in waves for me LOL.
Minimalism doesn’t have to look the same for everyone, its letting go of whats keeping you from being free and comfortable in your daily space and life. Sooo do you boo boo

If you only keep what you truly love and what you use, then that is the goal of a “minimalist” mentality. I’ve seen people who barely wear makeup, have more than you, so we each need to find what is comfortable for us. ++ if you do a kitchen minimal declutter, IM HERE FOR THAT ++
I think u should keep the purple n blue eyeshadows. They would be fun for a night out. Or maybe just keep one that looks the best on u.
Hi Hun, I was very intrigued by the Color Pop purple eyeshadow thing as well as you tossing the fun colored lip liners.
In my life, I realized I kept buying and tossing the same bright pink lipstick. Part of me loved it and wanted to wear it and part of me wanted to be the aesthetic of a grown up (I am 30 :) ultimately I realized that I do enjoy fun bright pink Barbie lip and it’s ok to have a few things I really enjoy, even if they aren’t super useful or I don’t use the product daily. Maybe one day you get up in a playful mood and you just want to wear purple eyeshadow... even if you are just chilling at home. Specially if you didn’t expend a lot of money there should be no shame in not hitting pan all the time.
There is something of a bright persona coming through in your video (the shirt you are wearing, the bright lipsticks and the gold jewelry) and that’s a part of yourself you shouldn’t divorce.
Maybe purple eyeshadow wasn’t for you... but purple nail polish or lipstick will? Before tossing it what else can you do? Maybe play around with the purple eyeshadow, add some vaseline and see if you could potentially like it as a lipstick or add it to clear nail polish? I think it’s ok to experiment and if something doesn’t work you can then give it away/dispose of it( don’t be like me and just toss it away 🙄)
If you are not somebody to make a product multitask that is fine, i just find that when we somehow resist giving something away is because we haven’t used it/experienced it enough yet to know whatever it should hold a space in our life or not.

I started my minimalism journey in October 2019 and I got to tell you, it absolutely changed my life. In the begging it is hard to let things go, but as time goes by, it becomes easier and easier. What minimalism brings you makes it worth it. I started with the 30 day minimalism game and it helped me starting. The majority of times I sell the “almost new” items and the other items I just ask family and friends if they want it. It’s awesome to recycle something you just don’t use and you avoid throwing things away :)
AMEN. It's weird because I'm so low-waste in my everyday life and it makes me sad that my makeup and skincare routine is not. So I hope to get there one day. But I agree, it seems like every declutter I do it's easier to part with things. And seeing the joy on my friends and family's faces when I give them like-new products that they will love and use (vs. it sitting there and rotting in my cabinet) is soooo amazing. Any tips you have or things you've learned from your minimalism journey that you can share?
Honestly I try to make a minimalism mix. I try to do a little of “the minimalists” + “goodbye things from Fumio Sasaki” and “Marie Kondo’s method of organization”.
I follow some personal rules so I can keep on track. For example, if I buy something new, it means I need to throw something else away/sell/give. Like an exchange, to prevent me from accumulating and keeping the equilibrium.
Secondly, if I open my closet, drawer etc and I’m not able to see everything I have in that compartment, it means I still have too much stuff.
I take the “spark joy” from Marie Kondo when decluttering and I ask myself if I really need that item, or if I just want it, but don’t need it (Fumio Sasaki explains this matter really well).
Once in a while I repeat the minimalism game, because it helps me go through my stuff and revise my belongings and improve my declutter.
I’ve also done some digital declutter. I’ve cleaned my e-mail and unfollowed distracting Facebook pages or groups I just wasn’t using anymore.
I’ve organized my photos and I always, always, take photos of the items I let go - that way, I can always remember them and I won’t feel bad for giving away a sentimental item, because I have a photograph that will remind me that someone special offered me that item. It somehow makes it easier to let go...
I feel it is not ok to keep something just because it was a gift or because it was expensive or because it was one of those shopping maximalism opportunities, because we end up not using them at all. If we think it through, those items will remain folded, forgotten in the back of the drawer, and they won’t be used. And maybe there’s someone that would love one of those items and would be happy to receive it. Why not give it to that person? It will give purpose to that item and it will make that person happy.
I know it is hard. I’ve tried to explain the benefits of minimalism and explain to my family and friends how much it changed my life and made me happier, but they don’t quite understand this...I think one can only understand by trying.
I feel you when you talk about your makeup and skincare! What I try to make is selling the eligible items that I know I really don’t love, give away those I don’t have an interest in anymore and throw away the expired ones even though sometimes we feel it is a waste throwing them in to the garbage. To prevent accumulating a lot of skincare and makeup I try to only have a maximum number of each category and I try really really hard not to buy new items without ending the ones I have at home first. I used to buy lipstick colors I wanted to use, but I never had that event or that party where that lipstick color would be suitable. So, now, I buy more realistically - I only acquire what I really love, what I know I will certainly use and good quality stuff.
I prefer having 1 luxury item than 4 poor quality items that are not making me happy and that are maybe damaging my skin.
Right now I’m facing the food decluttering challenge.
It really is a journey, it requires patience and perseverance.
I really recommend you reading the e-book from Fumio Sasaki, it helped me a lot!
There are no rules in minimalism, there are no maximum number of belongings...There is the minimalism you feel comfortable with and that is the one that will bring you happiness and piece...If you are worried then you will figure it out 🦊🧡

People tends to missunderstod the word minimalist. Milimanist means have the things that really makes you happy and enjoy the stuff that you already have without thinking constanly to buy more stuff like compulsive shoppings. People thinks minimalism means having nothing or less things as possible. This is true BUT you can have whatever you makes you happy and reduce the consumism and assess more your life, family, friends and the stuff that you keept .
This is SO, SO true. Thank you for sharing!! I don't think I can ever be a minimalist, especially when it comes to like home decor and little collectible items, but that's such a good point. If things have meaning and make you happy, that's good. Minimalism is just about getting rid of the excess clutter weighing you down. So if you're left with a ton of stuff still, but you love it all, maybe that's just what minimalism looks like for that individual! LOVE THIS. Appreciate the input

I have that same tower organizer! I have three sets of drawers under the top part and I’m really happy with my collection right now!

Today I put everything that I use the most into a makeup bag, and I will see if I miss anything outside of it up until my birthday in August. I have a couple of new makeup products that I want to get, but they are mostly cream/liquid blushes. I currently don’t own any so that is the one makeup item that I feel comfortable introducing. I just find that I don’t use most of the makeup that I have, but I hold onto it with the idea that maybe one day I will use it. That one day will never come and I need to realize it. This was a great video and definitely helped me. I want to become a minimalist, and I think this is a step in the right direction for me.

I like your gradual approach. We get used to having more stuff around gradually so it makes sense to minimise gradually too. There's more room for us to feel like we don't have enough after we declutter a lot and start to rebuy what we feel we're missing (which might lead to overconsuming all over again and is bad for the environment). It makes sense to gradually learn what you are reaching for and what you neglect even when you decluttered and it's now out in plain sight for you to grab. Allows to find a personal sweet spot of the amount things you are happy with.
YES YES YES to everything you said! I don't like the trash-everything-all-at-once approach. Not only is it wasteful, but I think going from having so much to having nothing makes a person want to buy more. My goal is to get rid of things I don't use without replacing them with other things I don't use (if that makes sense? lol). And it's crazy how doing it gradually you realize what you want to keep and what you don't want to keep. Something I thought i HAD to keep in my May '19 declutter, I look at now and I'm like "hell nah this is DEF going in the declutter pile!" Minimalism is different for everyone! I prefer to have a smaller collection with items I love and use everyday/ often! Great video 💕

Hi , in my eyes your minimalist , I have an Alex nine drawer but I use six drawers for makeup and I only have high end makeup , I absolutely could not live without my makeup and I have just done a declutter and passed the rejected products went to my family , my makeup gives me a lot of pleasure , just buy a palette with shades you are attracted too ,

This was so therapeutic, even though I can never do the declutter myself . Cant get enough courage to part ways with makeup. You should have kept that colorpop purple shadow. it was such a great look when u wore that once with that bright purple'ish top. XX

I think you should keep the benefit mascara as it's for a different use particularly when you want something for longer wear, as it's close to being empty I think it would be nice to just use up :)
When I finished my last tube of they're so real I washed and kept the brush because the ball end makes its so useful for applying other mascaras especially in the corner or lower lashes.
That's a great idea w/the want! And yeah I will keep the Benefit one and finish it up. Not that I have anywhere to go these days LOL
i love when i get rid of makeup because my cousin loves makeup like me so every time i wanna get rid of something i give it to her

I have that sleek pallete and I kids hate it on my face so I don't use it but it's so satisfyingly tactile and pretty to swatch and somehow I've managed to pan it that way

It looks so good! 😍 I actually got rid of some of my things from the top of my Vanity for makeup anyway. I find that I have so many organisers that I bought from ebay (set of 8 or something 'acrylic' organiser's just like yours!). That i simply don't use anymore as I put everything in my Alex drawer. My journey to less stuff (not calling it minimalist as I know I'm not) has started very recently by starting with decluttering things that I know I never used at one point I had nearly 300+ makeup items...😅 Now I have maybe 220 so it's a start. But I've also been keeping a makeup inventory! I've noticed I am actually really good at keeping my makeup numbers down in a lot of categories it's only lipstick and eyeshadows that I have the most struggle with.. 😅
Lol feel ya right there with the lipstick struggle!! 300+ down to 220 is good. Like I said, doing it in waves is super beneficial so maybe we can both revisit our collections again in a few months and get rid of more :)

it’s crazy how ppl have such different taste when it comes to makeup. i use eyeliner everyday, use colourful shadows and stuff yet some just use mascara and a neutral eyeshadow. i can’t imagine not using eyeliner lolol :’) anyways good job on ur declutter!

My favorite bronzer is ABH powder bronzer in the color Tawny.😃 I like red toned bronzers.
Your declutter item n 1 is the only mascara I've chosen to keep lol. My all time favourite, it stays on cry or laugh, plus the brush shape is awesome!! The taking it off part could be better tho, I understand your point!

I also have the ND eyeshadow from an allure box, but I find that it creases like crazy on my eye, do you have any tip on using it?
How weird! ND shouldn't crease for the price they charge for it LOL. At least we got it in beauty boxes! I have oily lids so I always use the UD primer potion and then I set it with some regular skin tone eyeshadow, and then I put ND on top. You could try the UD setting spray too before or after you use the shadow to help it stay in place ❤️
TH-cam has sucked me into buying things. I have at least 50 eyeshadow palettes. I have a hard time getting rid of stuff especially expensive things.

I have a lot of chapstick and lipbalms but I didn’t use all of them
So I just kept the ones near me which I want to use up that is one is a pot and one is twist up one!
Remaining ones are with my skincare and everything so I know they are there and pressurize myself to use it!
You can try to do that! And keep the funky eyeshadow purple one!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I noticed in this video you decluttered the tarte blush/shadow palette but I watched your previous declutter video you linked and you had decided to declutter the tarte palette in that one. Did you end up changing your mind and kept it to declutter in this one?

Is the glossier cloud paint any good? I've been eyeing them since I'm very into cream blushes lately.
Yes! Blends very easily since it's more liquidy
It's AWESOME. Seconding what Allison said! Cream blushes are annoying sometimes b/c they can be so thick (and I don't want to disrupt the sunscreen I'm wearing underneath), but the Cloud Paint is so liquidy and nice I just pat it on with my beauty blender. I find a lot of Glossier products to be super overhyped, but this is the ONE product from them I have (and will continue to) repurchase over and over :) hope that helps ❤️
Second everything that's been said, it's an amazing product. A little goes quite a long way too, so it's more cost effective than it seems.

@@NeelouGoodarzi It's really hard. I'm trying not to keep any back ups. You can spot clean with a spray bottle of alcohol on a face washer or towel - if you do that you don't really need more than of the same brushes. Maybe even only one? I'm also trying to only keep my favourite item from every category - so one bronzer, one blush, one concealer, etc. I can always make do with what I have .
What is the name of the taste eye and cheek palette you kept?

Yep, they do! It's hard. I try to collect items for recycling in categories, and if they can't be recycled curbside (like mascara, for example), in the past i've tried to locate places that have the personal beauty Terracycle box that does in fact take old mascara tubes to recycle :)

Hello 👋 Loved this video but I hope you tried to recycle your decluttered makeup. The body shop are accepting beauty packaging and other companies do too so even if you held onto these products and recycled them after quarantine that would be amazing! ❤️

Whatever can be recycled curbside, I put curbside, anything I can donate to Project Beauty Share, I will, and I usually try to locate a Terracycle box. I’m on it 🤪 I really appreciate that! Glad to see others are staying conscious of our carbon footprint as well. Part of why I’m getting rid of so much is to not continue to buy and to be happy living w/less! I’ll def check out the body shop for recycling too ❤️
