  • Custom jewelry is a dream for many people, and it's actually more within reach than most think. Two of my clients' custom projects are detailed in this video. You will learn how the process works and what you need to know for your own jewelry project. We talk about stones over on ‪@GemologyforSchmucks‬ and the jewelry projects here on Note and Compass.

My jewelry teacher in high school wore a smooth leather apron which he hooked under his desk to make a pouch, and we were not allowed to walk past the tape on the floor. The gold filings and dust would fall onto the apron for easy collection. Weekly he would mop his work area and wash the soles of his work-only shoes to capture any gold that had fallen.
    Great video about this process!

Thanks ~ The apron method is definitely a time honoured favourite. I think im moving between two benches too often for that to be my best fit, but i'm definitely still figuring it all out.

The best way to keep fillings is a (drop sheet) paper under your work. Each you start a project, put down a sheet of 25-weight paper. Then, send the folded sheets to a refiner to get most of your gold back. Even buffing has some fine particles of gold. Also, there is the drawer method, and then old findings even have a place to land. Then, it is brushed out to send in for refining.

Thanks for the suggestion ~ I use this to some extent, and am always looking for a better way to improve my "holdings". Cheers.

Great video full of insight, love this new series. I agree on the gold, yellow or its silver or platinum - white gold is for people that don't like puppies.

Thank you, also, I may need to appropriate that new piece of slander. Fantastic.

Isn't platinum harder to work with than higher carat gold? I was under the impression that it was more difficult to engrave and work with because it was harder than gold. Does it take you longer and more work to engrave something in platinum vs. something in high carat gold?

It is in some ways more difficult than gold, but as far as hardness is concerned, the actual moh's hardness (resistance to scratching and abrasion) is very similar to gold. The huge difference is density. The amount of pushing with a file and sand paper/ polishing you have to do in order to remove material is so much more demanding because there is significantly more material in the same footprint. Engraving and setting are a dream though, vastly more pleasant than that crunchy white gold.
