Awesome trip report, as always! You wrote that it shouldn’t qualify as EC - it shouldn’t even qualify as an IC service. Unfortunately the Hungarian carrier’s management (n the government’s people in charge) totally forgot what IC should be like. Stopping at every village is not even “rapid” category, especially with carriages that were mostly designed for commuter services.
Thanks so much! Yes, you're right. Unfortunately, we also have similar trains here in the Czech Republic, which are qualified as EuroCity and don't meet the criteria :-D
@@PeteBrandy to be fair the EC criteria doesn't really work for the small states in Central and Eastern Europe. In Hungary there aren't really cities outside the capital that could qualify to be served by EC trains. In the Babišská republika are only Brno and Ostrava. In Slovenia it's only Ljubljana.
On the other hand the Hungarian national operator went to the direction that it fuses commuter and IC trains so they serve more stops with worse quality rolling stock
I am very glad that you made this video of this flight. I often travel with it between Budapest and Miskolc when I visit my relatives. Most of the time I travel in the ZSSK 1st class car (which you also travel in), because with a 1st class ticket I can use the business lounge at Budapest-Keleti railway station.
This train runs in Hungary under the name HERNÁD-ZEMPLÉN InterCity. It stops at Mezőkövesd, because the mayor of the city asked the MÁV to stop these trains, there was no other direct train to Budapest (only passenger trains in the morning). It stops in Hatvan because the Rákos-Hatvan railway line was recently renovated, and with this stop you can get to the city of Hatvan every 20 minutes. That is why it runs in Hungary as InterCity.
I had this route and this train on my wish list for a long time. I like international trains that run on non-corridor lines. Next time I also have to visit the lounge at Budapest-Keleti station.
I'm very familiar with this train as I used to travel on this route (Miskolc-Budapest) frequently. There is hourly InterCity service between Miskolc and Budapest from morning to night, out of the trains serving this route 7 are served by these Hernád IC (so every 2nd hour) trains. The rest of the trains are served by Tokaj IC trains, those are generally longer and better equipped so usually I try to avoid the train in the video. The locomotive change and shunting at Miskolc-Tiszai is usually pretty quick but the train often gets delayed in both directions. Track quality until Hatvan hit the absolute bottom in the past two years or so, there have been some works during the night so it is somewhat better now but the segment immediately after Füzesabony is still very rough. The right track (towards Miskolc and Kosice) is in somewhat better condition, there are less delays in that direction. Lately they have been putting the recently leased Siemens Taurus trains on this route, with the faster acceleration they can better keep to the timetable.
And as you have mentioned already, this is not a real EuroCity train. Out of the 3 MAV coaches only one is an actual InterCity coach and even that does not fit the requirement of an EuroCity train. To be honest it is not a big deal as there are very few passengers between Hungary and Slovakia.
Thanks for watching! I liked this route and this train. I like trains that run on non-corridor lines. I think it would be better to call it Intercity in Slovakia as well, but that's just a detail :-)
In my opinion, if the Slovak operator wanted it call EC, than the root composition of the train should be like
ARpeer 85-70 open 1st & bistro
BDsheer 82-70 service, children & disabked
Beer 20-70 comparment 2nd
Bpeer 20-70 open 2nd
the Hungarian
Bpee 20-44 will fit very well into the composition
(the same license of DWA / DVJ Dunakeszi rebuilding program for all the listed coaches, made at DVJ Dunakeszi and ŽOS Vrútky),
else it is just like Ex category.
The main difference between the EC and IC in Slovakia is,
the EC (Ex) are public service obligation trains, hence donated by the govt (also for free for the selected groups of citizens), while the IC trains are competitive business portfolio with deregulated fares (no freebies are allowed)😎
Anyway, this route (from Košice / Kassa) is a typical circle - we do not travel by trains, because few services, there is enough that few trains, because noone wants to travel... You know.🙄
Super super 😊😊😊😊
Skvělý video 👍
Hello Pete, always nice to watch your trips Trip Report. On nice trains that I would have liked to take too. Decent and clean train, and there are trains. Not like in France, where there is a lack of trains or work, it's complicated. Beautiful images between Slovakia and Hungary. Thanks for sharing Pete. Greetings from Dives sur Mer in Prague 🇸🇽👋.👍📽️🤩🤩🚂🚅
Salut Pascal! Thanks for watching :-) This route is very interesting and connecting 2 interesting cities :-) Greetings from Prague :-)
I couldn't wait since you told me we will have new slovak video EC Hornád! It finally came Pete, imma see this! Cannot wait for next video Pete!
Thanks so much! I didn't originally plan to release this video because the beginning was quite confusing due to the replacement bus service :-D
Wow. Well thanks for posting it even with the problems! Honestly, this is normal is Slovakia and also Czechia... @@PeteBrandy
Cannot wait for another video! Also did you see my comment from your City Elefant ČD trip report?
Thanks for this report. I’ll be riding this train tomorrow. Very disappointed to see no restaurant or bistro car. I’ve been loving the service in Czechia and Slovakia.
Thanks for watching! Hope you will have a nice journey and good train composition 😎
Eeek, so I booked first class, and it was replaced by a second class car. The first class car has no WiFi and no outlets! I would move to second class but at least in first class we have a compartment to ourselves, so far at least. The attendant said I could get a refund through the website, but I don’t have high hopes for that!
Wonderful Budapest Keleti !
Yes, it is :-)
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching :-)
Hi Pete I always look forward to your posts, can’t honestly say that I’d put travel in these countries on my bucket list but a nice distraction to see other peoples travel arrangements, I’ve always held the opinion that no matter what I’m doing elsewhere in the world people are going about their day to day daily tasks so nice to see what the rest of Europe is up to, nice one Pete
Hi, thanks for watching! I have been interested in this train for a long time, I find the route interesting and because this train is marked as EuroCity, I had it on my list together with other trains of this category :-D
Ahoj pěkné video a lajk . Nezbývá mi nic jiného než s tebou souhlasit pokud vlak kategorie EC nemá jídelní vůz ani minimálně roznášku tak nepatří do této kategorie .
Ahoj Pete 😊😊😊 Fantastic trip report I think the ZZSK cars Look better than MAV ones. By the way : Budapest Keleti is amazing Railway station. Greetings and good luck 😊😊😊
Część Piotrek! Thanks so much for watching! Yes, it is, Budapest Kelt is beautiful station, sad that trains from Prague now departing from Nyugati.
@@PeteBrandy Yes. The same is from Warsaw. Destination Nyugati. Thanks
I did that journey myself in the middle of June this year but the First Class was a compartment (which I had all to myself the entire journey) - Not a bad journey :)
This train is not very busy, I had the whole coach to myself until Miskolc, about 10 people traveled from Miskolc to Budapest.
Mě i tato krátká videa baví, dávám like. No a tím pádem jsem měl 5. 11. 2023 opět velikou radost z toho videa TRIP REPORT | Retro Fast Train | KŽC Kokořínský Rychlík | Class 749 Grumpy locomotive.
Yo, man! What an excellent review you have here! Let me ask you a question first, which is something quite related to the video. Since you have been travelling between these three Visegrad Group nations, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, which of these nations has the best public transport system as you see? Oh yeah, the bathroom tour is literally a free disco box as the sound of the track as the train runs resembles the rhythm of some sort of disco beats 🤣 Despite the lovely nice seats they offered, the price range for me seems not so convincing. Not even a minibar is available. Did this is because of the short distance travel between these two destinations? Who knows? BTW a great analysis of the price range with the criteria as the EuroCity train provided.
Cheers from Malaysia :)
Thanks so much for watching! I think that catering services are not offered here because it is not worth solving the logistics for this service on this route (Slovak carrier provides carriages for the entire length of the route, but a bistro car would not be worthwhile due to the lower occupancy of this line). As for the transport system, it's hard to say, there are quite a few differences in each country, in some countries there are better services / trains, but in others there is better regularity of train connections, etc. Greetings from Prague :-)
Mám to úplně stejně.
Celkem jo, ten vlak je docela zajímavý.. no ten vůz pěkně dupal :-D
In Hungary it runs as an IC
I know, it's a reason why I listed both versions (EC Hornád / IC Hernád) on the thumbnail and in the title of the video.
@@PeteBrandy I love your videos. Keep up with the good work
@@budapestkeleti6404 Thanks so much 😎
Hello! I live in Encs (Forró-Encs). Thank you the video!!!
Hello, greetings from Prague to Encs :-)
Whoever is in charge of regulating the criteria of how a train service can be classified as Eurocity should look at this one. Took this several years ago in reverse (Budapest-Košice) in a first class compartment. The train was in the platform ahead of time, however it did not move for two hours. No apologies or explanations were officially given. Additionally, there was no onboard announcement for the entirety of the trip and I had to rely on the kindness and help of fellow passengers when it comes to information. The only upside was that I had a fruitful conversation with the other people inside my compartment while travelling.
I loved both Budapest and Košice, but this train ride leaves much to be desired. The Bratislava-Košice IC service gives way better value at around the same price, with nice food as well.
Yes, this train is a bit bizarre and certainly doesn't belong to the EuroCity category.. but as an experience, the train is interesting, especially the route.. And you are right, the InterCity trains running from Bratislava are much better.
5:29 Zaujimava foka🤔😀
Ostrava-Svinov z R Fatran, jinou jsem neměl 😅 A kontrolní číslice sedí 😀
Did you tried the bussnies lounge at the Keleti?
Unfortunately no, I had little time, I had to move to Nyugati station to catch my next train :-D
ooooo hehe, next video? or just moved?@@PeteBrandy
Well, PKP Intercity informed, that IC/EC 104 Polonia (Wien-Warszawa) and 100 Moravia (Wien-Katowice), due to lack of restaurant cars, will run without those cars...
Yes, unfortunately.. also the new EC Danubius will not have a dining car.
Welcome to Hungary
Hello 😎
International Intercity*
Szlovákiában Hornád EC-ként közlekedik
As the train had scheduled origin from Košice, I used the name by the Slovak carrier.
Nič prekvapivé, takto vyzerá EC tzv. karpatského typu. Na úrovni rýchliku.
IC skôr haha :D
Interesting video, not the best in train service on board but guess that is dictated by the poor government running the transport system.
Thanks so much for watching! :-)
MAV has a such a horrific and disgusting old car park .... Hungary is not a very modern country
Not that I would be a big fan of Hungary and their politics but I must say that their trains are generally modern, they have a lot of Stadler Flirts and Kisses and their EC towards Hamburg is quite modern.
MÁV-START has a lot of modern coaches, for example coaches built by Spanish manufacturer CAF Zaragoza, which run on international trains, as well as newly built InterCity coaches.
