  • Located in downtown Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous attractions in all of Myanmar, attracting crowds of locals and tourists alike. Of course we had to pay a visit to this stunning site while in Yangon! At nearly 100 meters tall, the glimmering gold Buddhist pagoda, decorated with tens of thousands of diamonds and other gems, is the most sacred place of religion in all of Myanmar.
    Watch the entire Myanmar series!

Base on your question Shwedagon is not just for tourists attraction place.I don’t know others but every time I go to Shwedagon I feel peaceful and I have no hates or angers while I’m there. Most of Myanmar people go there for doing good deeds as sweeping floors and keep it clean the area Voluntarily. Some people go there for just to meditate because they feel closer with buddha. However, Shwedagon for everyone who wants peace. Not just for tourists attraction.

Paused at your question to comment.
It is the most religious site in Myanmar and all the activities there are nothing to do with tourism apart from those who are interacting with tourists.
As a Burmese, even though I am not 100% Buddhist, I often go there at evening when it is getting dark. Because the atmosphere on the Pagoda ground, especially at that time, is unique and give me different feeling unlike another other places I have been to.
Everytime I get there, I find a peaceful spot and meditate for a while.

Having lived in Yangon for half of my life (and on many subsequent visits), I of course have been there numerous times, but I am always spellbound by the majestic splendor of this huge place. A beautiful building or structure can move a person, but a pagoda that has been said to be covered in more gold than all the vaults in England will take your breath away!
Even if you are not of the Buddhist faith (which I am not), be prepared to be absorbed in an atmosphere of holiness and spiritual tranquility, and even if you are hard to impress, you will be overwhelmed by its magnificence and breathtaking beauty. I was with one of my American friends one time, and this is what she said when we were there, "It is so captivating and no words can describe it, but I will say one thing, 'my eyes keep falling out of my head."
The people of Myanmar are very religious, and it is believed that the Shwedagon reveals the heart of the people. There are always crowds of devotees who come to worship at the Shwedagon. Old, young, monks, nuns....people from all walks of life. This is what Myanmar is all about - the impact of Buddhism in the everyday life of the people.
Anyway, if you are ready to be transported to a whole new world and a serene environment (even though the place is bustling with worshipers and tourists alike), be sure to make this pagoda your number 1 must see attraction when you are in Yangon. You will be totally mesmerized by its wonder!

From Thailand, I love your narrating. It’s so epic! Thank you so much.
According to your question, as a Buddhist, surely that temples and pagodas are built for religious purpose. However, many Buddhists believe that they have to do their best in order to honor and pay respect to the Lord Buddha. As a result, many beautiful temples and pagodas are built extravagantly. Some people donate gold and precious stone like diamonds and gemstones to decorate temples, pagodas and Buddha images. As a consequence, like many magnificent places, the beauty of temples and pagodas attracts more tourists.
I’ve never been to Burma. Luckily, my parents went there many years ago. I asked my parents to bring my ruby stone to worship the Shwedagon Pagoda (donate at the donation point) and in order to be used for the Pagoda’s renovation. I’m so grateful of having a chance to do that. And your video brings back this wonderful memory.
I hope I have a chance to pay respect to the Swedagon Pagoda by myself in the future.

Yes, it’s place has been utilised. The presence of Buddha hairs & visits of many other enlightened bodies throughout many past centuries makes this place supernatural. If u meditate & analyse Dhamma in this place especially at night around 9pm (near Naung taw Gyi shrine), it’s easier to focus & bring back all our good karma for enlightenment. I am not sure if you will understand what I am trying to say or not.
Anyway, great video & such sweet couple~ take care :)

Every painting and curving has a story behind it. They are not just for architectural design, every story behind a painting presents a morality or a lesson. I am not sure if you can find these stories in English. There are numerous books describing and portraying hundreds(or thousands) of stories in Burmese language and in the Pali language. Moreover, Shwedagon Pagoda has legends of how it was built and a hidden story behind the building of the pagoda. It is said that there is a secret chamber underneath the pagoda where it keeps the relics and treasures, and ancient technology machines are running for protection of the chamber and there is a story of a man trying to sneak into that secret chamber. I can't prove if the legends are authentic but there really are more fascinating facts about the pagoda more than just the architecture or the landmark. Just adding extra interesting facts about the pagoda. Nice Vlog, cool editing and Cheers.

Cheers Guys..!! Great shots and heartwarming video. Watching this actually make me feels I am back home for 15 minutes.
Short to the point, First, Shwe Dagon Pagoda, landmark of Yangon, is one of the holiest Buddhist monuments which our people been taken care of generation by generation. Thus, it's not just made for tourist attraction but for all people.
We also have many more interesting ancient pagodas and temples across the country. For example, Bagan, situated in the middle of the country where used to be the very first Myanmar Kingdom commences. It used to has over 10,000 pagodas in the old days but still has left with over 4000 pagodas. I would recommend the best time to visit Myanmar is either winter (Oct/Nov - Jan) or summer time (February-May) cause at that period you can catch the most beautiful sunset there in Bagan and of course all over the country as well.
I've watched your 1hr long video about your experience in Myanmar and I would like to explain a few things that you might want to know. First, our people are taught to be respectful to one people to another. For instance, bowing while crossing in front of someone's face means showing their respect that they don't mean to block you or another way of expressing very polite action of "Excuse Me". And it does consider as one of the most polite actions to act on.
The same scenario, it is inappropriate to wear shorts in holy places like Shwedagon since that might disturb some people and for the reason of showing respect to the religion, so that you are suggested to change something well covered. It is totally appropriate to wear whatever you like all across the country. Do it with confidence, guessing that the reason some people staring at you, may because of you are just stunning. Sorry for being dropping a long message.
Love you guys. Hopes this message give some ideas about your next visit to Myanmar. I believe there are many more to see. I have a dream that I would travel across the world just like you guys.
Feel free to get in touch.
Keep up the good work. Have a lovely day.
    Regards,
    Sett

White marble are not absorbing heat. Black colour is absorbing heat. (This is basic Physic Theory). When I was younger day there were some black or dark color slab. Now they changed to all white marble slab so that it don't absorb the heat. Shwedagon is NOT for tourist attraction. It is a religious place for Buddhist. (Like what Macca is for muslim) but we welcome anyone with different religions. The main reason Buddhist go there is just for worshipping.
