  • Located north of downtown Yangon along Inya Lake, the University of Yangon is the oldest university in Myanmar's modern education system. We came to tour the campus and see what college life was like for Burmese students who attend class here! This university is the best known university in all of Myanmar and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with programs in liberal arts, sciences and law.

For me, the world is my university. I have learned so much from my travels to different countries, the education that one cannot get from any school, college or university.

Basically if you study in Myanmar, from the first year of High School, every subject minus Burmese literature is taught in English, at least it is for the Science major. So, basically every university libraries keep books in English, like references or literature. Burmese you can find will mostly be leisure reads like novels, weekly journals.

I admire the fact that you guys go out of your way to visit places of interest other than the usual tourist attractions. By the way, when I lived in Yangon, my house was just a stone's throw away from the university. Judson Church was only about a five minute walk and my family and I would attend church there almost every Sunday. What a pity you didn't meet the pastor of that church. His name is Rev. Ko Lay and I believe he is still the pastor there. You could have asked him all about me, hahaha!

I think it has reopened now to study. My generation never got to attend this university bcoz of the political unrest back then. The military gov back then thinks that it's a good idea to open new univerisites in the outskirts of the city and literally middle of nowhere (i think to gain better control any protests, and less chance of other people joining in) with that our education system was slowly destroyed. In my parents days, we were told that it was one of the top universities in Asia.

The main course focusses on identification and removal of all the hateful, supremacist, neo-political, violence-inciting parts of the koran.
The key objective is to convert the fiendish evil cult into a peaceful one.
