Why are predatory crimes sentences so short. It's appalling, I've been in recovery for 10 years from my CSA, a punishment for causing that should not be shorter😢
It's horrendous that the victims of these crimes often spend more time in therapy than the perpetrators do in prison. I'm deeply sorry for what happened to you, I hope you're healing well❤
They'll put people in jail/prison or life for small marijuana charges but Pedi's and abusers get slaps on the wrist. That's a biproduct of white supremacy. Why would they lock up their friends/colleagues/people that look like them or doing similar things they are with abuse of power. Putting these people away for an appropriate amount of time would stain their reputation. "How could you put this upstanding citizen, who was just at the wrong place/wrong time/lied to or tricked by this child in prison for just being a man?"... They use real arguments like this in these hearings and it works for a lot of them.
That's so real I've been in therapy for 10 years because of all the things my abusers have done to me. If they go to jail, they'd probably get more from the odd times I've been hit than the CSA.
"Someone around me died therefore I am allowed to be an awful person" is both the worst argument ever, and also shows they don't actually value the person they are using as a shield in the first place.
@@iamjustkiwi And while I respect that everyone grieves on their own time line, she died a year ago. Like 10 years from now, and he'll still be pulling out her death. "Nooooo, you can't accuse me! My wife just died (11 years ago)! I'm just a sad, frail old guy :'( "
Men will use a dead/sick female family member to get away with sex crimes. It's disgusting when women accept it as an excuse. "His mom has cancer and she's going to die. Show some empathy and forgive him." >:(
As a woman who has had a LOT of old men flirt eith me in very inappropriate way, most of them while i was working and unable to escape or do anything about it, this isn't "cute grandpa" behavior. I genuinely do not think this is a "complicated" or "misunderstand" situation. Its gross and it shouldn't get any sort of a pass
Yeah, there’s a certain brand of insidious old men who love playing peepaw to try and touch you or say inappropriate stuff. It’s so infuriating how much leeway others give them. As someone who’s also been a magnet for these kinda creep, I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with that.
once I literally said "Ew!!" when this one old guy tried touching me and he got mad that I got disgusted that he tried to touch me without consent, citing ageism 👁️👄👁️
@allursins when someone tries to pull a convenient intersectionality card to deflect or reject CONSENT, it's such a cynical expression. Obviously, they don't give a f about you/us, NOR the thing their weird asses are trying to DARVO us over. It's so disgusting and I'm sorry he treated you like that.
When I was 14, I did a work placement for a catering company. At an event we went to, my job was busing tables. I asked an old man (in his 80s, I think) if he was done with his plate, and he asked me if I was there to give him a lap dance. Again. I was *14*.
It makes me concerned about what her grandfather was like. Maybe people who defend old men like this are just in denial and don't even realize it's been copium all along
People who say stuff like that convenientely forget that most people didn't sexually assault anyone even back in the day. My grandpa's his age. He didn't sexually assault anyone. It's not hard.
We can actually use as an example old movies for how this behaviour was still wrong: anytime a woman was grabbed in a way that Coppola did, he would be slapped, if a guy put his face on a woman's neck usually she would yell: let me go! Don't touch me! Take your hands off of me! So, it was always wrong.
I'm so glad you brought up Salva. His victim has been very vocal about the negative impact Francis Ford Coppola has had on his life in connection to Salva. Salva has also said in interviews that Coppola visited him in prison and told him that his time incarcerated would make him a better artist 🤢
"Woke" is appropriated black american slang. It does not refer to people who promote Diversty, Domestic abuse or Left leaning ideals. it is a corruption of the word "Awake" meaning being aware. More specifically, racial injustice back when racism was as blatant as it is on Twitter. So, you're asking is it Aware to condem domestic violence? If you have to ask; you're not "woke."
@lilkingg82 it was a rhetorical joke referring to D'Angelo's commentary on Joe Rogan's "comedy" special he posted this week. Also, in today's zeitgeist, the term woke has transformed, and is ALSO considered a derogatory term used against those who advocate for human rights and equity for everyone.
It's become terrible in gaming circles again in the last couple of years. Absolutely everything that isn't a straight white male protagonist or a woman with giant boobs is woke. There's literally been people who claim that female characters who don't look like supermodels are being foisted onto gamers as part of a woke agenda to ruin games. A tiny bit of peach fuzz on a face isn't photorealistic, it's a war on all that is holy.
I'm pretty sure that when he dies, a loooot of victims will come forward, because only then they won't have to deal with him exercising his power and influence to silence them.
“When are people going to start separating the artist from the art? Just because someone made something good doesn’t mean you need to defend them”. I’m keeping this D’Angelo quote in my back pocket.
Seriously, separating the art from the artist goes far beyond simply not thinking about the creator as you're watching, it means to not associate the product with the creator outright
19:45 “When are you going to realize that just because somebody made something good doesn’t mean they need to be defended. People only bring up “separate the art from the artist” when the artist in question is a bad person, usually a terrible human being. In Coppola’s case, vouching for them, enabling their continued support… You are supporting them as people. That’s not you consuming art without supporting the artist; that’s JUST supporting the artist……Why, pray tell, would I support them, knowing full well what they have done?”
I absolutely hate when people tell me to just separate the art from the artist. I’m not going to continue to support someone who is a horrible person and knowingly give them money
@@katej2284 To be quite honest I don't like the Godfather either. That's a pretty controversial opinion though and I got into multiple arguments with Film Bros(tm) about it in college
I love how old men always claim that they’re just cute, old and loving when they get caught in creepy crap. Like, sir, you did this crap when you were young, too!
So I work in the film industry, and it’s very common for actors and crew, especially extras and newcomers, to put up with abuses and then brag about how much of a team player they are. They think this will boost their career, but they don’t realize it just makes life worse for everyone else on the set.
I work in HR, and I try SO HARD to fight against that mentality. Abuse shouldn't be a standard to be a team player or hard worker. There are tons of other respectful and healthy ways to achieve those characteristics.
You see it in bar work too. Some guy will be a real creep to one of the women behind the bar, and they won't say anything because 'they don't want to make a scene or a fuss' and it's like... No. Everyone will understand if you gotta kick somebody out for being a creep.
i just think it’s super cool that women are put in the position of “do you want this job or do you want respect?” every day and we’re blaming them for it. as if an extra would be able to come out against a director without support, or even stand her ground and set boundaries with the director without getting fired. as if a bartender or a server can let someone know they’re being inappropriate without losing tips or being asked for a manager, who will inevitably side with the customer. of course they’re putting up with it! of course they’re pretending it’s okay, and turning it into a good thing! they’re literally being harassed constantly in exchange for money that most people DESPERATELY need nowadays, and your takeaway is “what a pick me, they’re making it worse for everyone else.” absolutely not. what you should be saying is “how terrible that woman have to deal with this. how terrible that women have deluded themselves into thinking this is okay, that it’s a positive trait that they can constantly take harassment. where can we start making change so that one day, hopefully soon, women will be treated with respect in the workplace?”
@@moonlitdreams-7266 It is terrible, I fully agree. However, her throwing other women under the bus is absolutely shameful. I would’ve completely understood had she not said anything at all. Actions like hers are part of the reason it doesn’t get better. We can’t depend on the men to do better, obviously, so we have to depend on ourselves. And clearly we can’t depend on women like her.
Bill Cosby is not out on a technicality, go back and read the law. Bill Cosby never should have been arrested that is not a technicality The technicality was that he was arrested to begin with, the prosecutor that had him arrested and tried him is the one that actually broke the law. not saying that Bill Cosby's right not saying that he's wrong, but for all of you snowflake type people you want the world to be the way you wanted to be and you're not trying to hear anything else there are rules of law, and prosecutors are not allowed to break those rules of law. nowadays it actually takes a strong judge to say that they are not going to accept these shenanigans.
Here's what's wild about Victor Salva and trying to separate the art from the artist... you literally can't. Once you know what he is, you can only see his films through that lens, through the eye of a total fucking creep and a monster. His movies are about his proclivities. They're about how he sees young boys, especially Powder. But here's the other thing about him. He used his first film as the grooming tool. His "art" is his weapon. You can't separate it knowing that. Also he dedicated the 4th Jeepers Creepers films to his victim. He won't leave him alone. Even 30 years later, and that reignited trauma and his victim, how was a voice for victims, who was doing good work, has since gone totally dark online. It's so disgusting.
Hello, a little correction: Victor Salva was NOT involved with the 4th film (Jeepers Creepers: Reborn) anymore after his Jeepers Creepers 3 controversy in 2017. The 3rd part included dialogue, which apparently justified CSA through the line Salva had wrote: "Can you blame him though? I mean look at her, the heart wants what it wants, am I right?". As of writing this, Jeepers Creepers 3 remains as his latest product. This is off-topic, but the 4th part would go on to have a controversy of its own: Myriad Pictures (the main production company behind parts 2 and 3) filed a property fraud lawsuit against Infinity Films Holdings (one of the production companies behind part 4) for producing the film without Myriad's "knowledge or involvement".
this is also how i feel about the director of euphoria. some of the shots of women that could have showed the "sexual" nature of the scene without it being SOOOOO hypersexualized and also brutal in some cases and then to see that AGAIN in the idol...how do more people not see that this is an indication that this person likely acts like that BUT WORSE in the real world...........(for the record, i did like euphoria but hated the idol)

People do this type of shit with Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick because despite their horrible 'creative processes' they still made good movies. They deserve to be held accountable for the abhorrent things they did, and so does this creep
Well unfortunately, since the accused often have plenty of money and resources at their disposal, they are able to magnify the voices defending them. There might not be as many apologists out there as we think. I think if you asked most people they would say “I don’t support this person’s actions even though I like their art”
I’m so glad these Hollywood creeps are getting exposed. I’ve done a lot of film and extra work myself, and have had several interactions with famous people who are just creeps. That “interview” was atrocious.
Not excusing their actions at all, but I wonder if being so famous and constantly being showered in adoration makes these stars feel like anybody would want to be kissed/touched by them and there’s no need to ask. That’s still majorly icky but at least would explain why so many of them are like that (again, I want to emphasize that that’s NOT an excuse, since I’m sure [well, I hope] there are a decent number of famous people who have managed not to touch anyone nonconsensually. And even if there weren’t it would still be wrong)
@@TeeklGreytypically, imo, these people often show creep behavior before they become famous. there’s just plenty of people who feel that this sort of behavior is normal, because it’s just a “friendly kiss” or a pat on the butt. coppola is probably the type of old guy who, if he wasn’t famous, would still be grabbing women he likes and trying to kiss on them and making them nervous laugh.

"Separate the artist from the art". Thank you so much for that framing. Really great way to point out the hypocrisy. "I can separate art from artist" "Oh CAN you? Then why don't you think the creep should face consequences?"
As a strong advocate of "separating the art from the artist" myself, I can say that I absolutely 100% think that, say, Roman Polanski should rot in jail. And at the same time, whether he ever does or not will have no influence whatsoever on my enjoyment of Chinatown, which is a great fucking movie, and one that I can watch again and again without ever contributing to him financially. I agree that people who defend the person BECAUSE they are a great artist (like all the celebrities who defended Polanski) are hypocrites. But those people do not exclusively make up the "separate the art from the artist" camp by any means. There's a hell of a lot of room for manoeuvre between "Coppola is a genius, he doesn't have to live by society's petty rules" and "we should immediately burn all copies of The Godfather".
@@oliverholmes-gunning5372 there's a middle ground though. It's not a hard binary of social death or unwavering support. You can still enjoy a terrible person's art, but you have to admit it changes the lense you view their art through. If you can watch House of Cards with the exact same critical eye you did back in 2015, that's a problem. It doesn't mean the art lacks all value or worth, but reality should affect your perception of art to some degree.
@@dengar96 I get what you're saying, but personally I can do that, yes. I simply never associate a character with a real-life person. There are some celebrities I absolutely detest as people, but I can forget all about that when I'm watching them act. I don't associate their real-life behaviour with their character any more than I would associate their character's behaviour with their real life persona. There are some exceptions. For example I definitely viewed Manhattan through a different lens after the Woody Allen allegations came out, because in it he plays a middle-aged man dating a minor, so it's hard not to associate the movie with real life. But I can watch, say, Annie Hall, or Play It Again Sam, without said allegations even occurring to me. And I certainly wouldn't stop watching any of them, even Manhattan, just because of said allegations- even if they turn out to be proven true.
Its time to remember that hard truth. Is Coppola a revolutionary and brillant film maker that has made some my favorite films. Yes. Is coppola also creep that deserves to be condemned for his throughly inappropriately activities. Also yes.
I think his filmography's quality has always been in question even before this scandal. 4 great films in the 70s followed by decades of mid is not my idea of creative genius or a great filmmaker. Sounds like he's another artist that lived long past his creative edge.
As someone who loves his movies this is absolutely terrible to hear about. While I admire his earlier work like the Godfather pt1 & 2 and one of my favorite movies of all time Apocalypse Now. I have always made sure to steer away from admiring him as a person. Especially when it comes to his later films. But honestly I’m kinda glad to see him fail by his own hubris.
@@tbprodutions let’s not retcon history here. Those movies were made by him. They were his final vision. He was a very talented filmmaker. However bad people can make good art and that is a hard pill to swallow. While his films don’t reflect him as a person. They still are movies made by him. His moves are the good and he’s a scum bag.
"I have always made sure to steer away from admiring him as a person". This. There are celebrities I can admire as people, but that has nothing to do with their art. For example, I don't rate Keanu Reeves as an actor at all, but he seems like a really nice person irl, so I can admire him for that. But I have never, ever confused admiration for a person's talent with admiration for them as a person- I enjoy the films of Quentin Tarantino, for example, but I don't automatically assume he's a great guy just because he makes movies I like, so when the stories of him allowing Uma Thurman to get hurt on the set of Kill Bill due to negligence came out I was neither shocked nor upset, nor did it stop me being able to enjoy Kill Bill. I've always found it really easy to separate the art from the artist, and finding out that Coppola is probably a creep means no more to me than finding out that some random person I didn't know was- I think he should face the consequences of his actions, of course, but it will have precisely zero effect on how I view GF or Apocalypse Now, or my enjoyment of them, any more than knowing about all the horrible shit that Polanski did has an effect on my enjoyment of Chinatown. While I can understand people who don't want to pay money to see a new film by a problematic figure that will contribute to their financial success, I've never understood people who refuse to watch anything they've ever done ever again, and I honestly think it's the product of our celebrity-obsessed culture where we seem incapable of separating a person's work from their private life, and see celebrities as our friends and heroes rather than as mere court jesters providing the service of entertainment.
@@tbprodutions tell me you've never seen Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse without telling me you've never seen Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
as an artist, i think in most cases an artist's work contains part of the artist themself. Like, Harry Potter is steeped in JK Rowling's bigoted views. That doesn't mean that people can't have their own experience with a work, their own meanings and interpretations, but to say that an artist's work has nothing to do with who they are just doesn't make any sense. Even if I'm hired by some company to make a dumb logo, that logo is still only gonna end up looking however it looks because of the choices I made when creating it. And like, if an artist does something horrible it can definitely recontextualize the values or ideas presented in their past work for a lot of their fans. idk just this idea that art is separate from the artist in any way really doesn't make any sense to me, and this idea being so prevalent partially explains why people are so insistent that genAI is capable of making art. But art IS the humans that make it.
very very true. personally my approach has always been to keep the artist in mind when consuming the art in question because of that influence. like D'Angelo said, consuming the art is fine, it's the monetary support that's the issue-and consuming the art while understanding those influences, even if you love the work and have different personal meanings attached, is also a good thing to do
Very true! When you take the time to actually read the Harry Potter books, they are so much more mean spirited than the movies buy a lot, and the abuse never gets punished, and in the end the character doing a lot of it gets redeemed for not at all a good reason. And even though dobby is a beloved character, he’s still very much framed as not an average house elf, and their plight is not really seen as negative in the books. Even protagonist defend their slavery. And even beloved characters like Hagrid have a few kind of iffy views on Muggles and other types of people. Not to mention that almost every unique looking person or excessively large character is framed as a coward or a criminal. Knowing how she is, a lot of it actually makes me quite a bit uncomfortable now, and I’m sure there’s a lot I’m missing. I’m not trying to tell people whether they should like or dislike the books, but as a pretty big fan since I was about five or six, this was just stuff I noticed, especially when you look at her other writings. It’s kind of crazy how often when artist come out as intolerant or abusive that when you go back and look at their art, you can see some of the signs.
this is absolutely true, but i dont think its meant to be so literal. i think separating the art from the artist is a (arguably not good) metaphor for saying what they're actually trying to get at, which is, like d'angelo says, just because someone makes something good, doesn't mean that you have to defend them. and art IS the humans that make it, but art also allows the artist to show only what they want seen, like they say about social media and content creators. so its not gonna show everything.
this has always been my personal take with the phenomenon. while there definitely is work that can still be enjoyed while giving no thought to the author, oftentimes what the author believes or does are reflected in their work to some degree. this can sometimes be minor and criticized while still enjoying the work as a whole, but sometimes the author bleeds into the work to such an extent that their harmful views/actions can be seen in the work itself with the context. one should be critical of any work they engage in, as its important to be able to have these nuanced takes on media and theres very little media in which such nuance isnt necessary (the only one i can think of is chis sweet home ekdnekcn), and this especially is true for media where its known that the creator has an unsavory reputation that can show in their work. none of this makes a work impossible to enjoy, but its important to consider, especially for those who claim to care about a creators bad behavior but refuse to engage with how it presents in the work itself i think i repeated myself Buh. basically personal example- some members of msi suck, and this bleeds into some of their songs, so i just listen to the ones that dont contain anything related to their nasty behavior via reuploads so i also dont add to any streaming revenue. its pretty simple, but some folks Really seem incapable of understanding that what they enjoy can be criticized without it being an attack on them
It’s ironic that Sofia Coppola (his daughter) directed ‘Priscilla’ which highlights how famous people can get away with abuse because of their ‘fame & talent’.
whenever i think about separating the art from the artist, it is always, ALWAYS in the context of appreciating the art itself and NOT the person behind it. i will never defend somebody purely because i like their art, nor will i try to justify their heinous actions because they are talented. as an artist, i simply want to enjoy good art when i see it. i am allowed to like a painting and hate who made it. lovely video as always d'angelo you are FEEDING us
I never watched any of Coppola's movies but finding out about this was... disgusting, to say the least. As someone who went through something similar, his actions and behavior is absolutely unacceptable. In the words of Peter Griffin: "I did not care for the Godfather. Did not care for it."
Separating the art from the artist isn’t a a requirement for consuming art. “You can separate the art from the artist!” But I’m not going to. I don’t feel that the art is so valuable that I can give egregious impropriety a pass.
Thank you. There are a lot of pieces of art I like but the good thing is there is always more art out there. Yeah I grew up with Harry potter but it was super easy to move on from it when the Rowling stuff happened. It's just a story. It's not my identify and leaving harry potter behind didn't cause me to bleed or injure me physically or psychologically in any way.
Re: Unprofessional article. Well, I was a journalist at one point and you're right. "self phones" was pretty epic. I keep thinking that article was written by ChatGPT.
Literally, people will be all about the power of art for self expression and relaying a message until the moment something skeevy happens. Plenty of art has a different context when you know more about the creator (like how stories about people who are "different" being heroes ring hollow when the creator hates people who are different from them in real life, for example).
I think the problem is in thinking that because someone said or did terrible things, it means that their artistic works must also be terrible or worthless. It’s a flattening of the maker. The solution shouldn’t be to separate art from artist, it should be to view the artist as a whole person capable of both helping and harming.
It’s a concept that’s become annoyingly misinterpreted over the past few years as an excuse for people to continue consuming content made by people who have done awful things without any guilt on their part. It’s *supposed* to refer to the fact that, in artistic analysis, very often people’s interpretations will differ from the artist’s original intentions & original context. It’s supposed to be phrase that lends validity to varied personal interpretation, and allow for a sense of nuance when performing analysis on said art, not an excuse people can throw around to justify supporting horrible people.
@@Window4503no absolutely, people have such a problem with associating morality with talent. it’s SO important to be able to recognize that horrible people can make good art, in the same way that it’s important to be able to recognize that beauty is not synonymous with morality. that sort of black and white mindset is the exact same thing that leads to people being unable to recognize or accept someone as a predator, because they don’t fit the “image” of what a predator “should” look like, i.e ugly and untalented

In reality it's a word to describe a large collection of cities. Boston to DC is considered a megalopolis due to the population density in that corridor.
Predator math: "The amount of trauma that a sexual assault survivor sustains is inversely proportional to the amount of artistic talent the perpetrator possesses."
Oh oh, I have another : "The amount of shit a Hollywood predator can get away with is proportional to how talented of an artist he is OR proportional to how useful he is to various members of the industry" Coppola is a creep, but like that article and that lawsuit state "yeah but his movies are so good though" Weinstein was an open secret for years, everyone knew the weird shit he was doing. But he was the guy that kept producing so many good movies and could really help you with your career if you kept your mouth shut.

He's Nicholas Cage's uncle. Many people don't reserve that Nick Cage is also a nepo baby. And I think that's why Nicholas changed his last name, cause the story Nicholas tells about why he changed his last name makes zero sense.
To be entirely fair, most aspiring unknown actors wouldn't take some of the roles Cage took during his career. He's earned his own reputation even if he didn't earn his initial start down that path. Whether that's a good reputation, that's another conversation..
It so annoying when ppl use separation of art/artist as an excuse, that's not even what that means, it means to "kill the artist" aka to ignore authorial intent when it comes to interpretation of the piece. To support aholes and creeps or harrassers and bigots with consuming their products is just that, and no, you can't separate that. Obvs there are nuances, you can still like a film from Coppola, he was not the sole talent making the Godfather great, and I still love the Outsiders and the Black Stallion, that'll never change. But there's no need to keep creeps working, there are new talent being born every day, maybe let them be allowed to thrive instead.
I think you might be confusing “separate art and artist” with the term “death of the artist” (I could be wrong though!), but absolutely agree otherwise, well put
Ive most offten heard it used in cases where a person loved someones art like books they already have or films and find out that person is awful. In that cases ive seen it used to explain that you can still love those pieces of art but have no love or support for the artist. One of my family members grew up loving Harry potter. They are trans, they still love their harry potter books and movies but they will never support jk ever again. They dont need to throw out those things that made them happy.
I can’t say I’m at all surprised. Just look at all the people who vocally stood up/continues to stand up for Roman Polanski. Much less how engrained it is abusing people of all ages, and shutting down anyone that dares to say no or talk about it. It’s an absolute disgrace what he’s done and what he’s doing now.
the criticism of the video release is uh...... wild. it's literally just them going nooooo he's a little baby francis ford coppola is a poor little baby stop being mean to him!!!! don't be mean!!!!! his wife died!!!! so he's allowed to harass his extras!!!! because hes a poor sad little baby!!!! and he also directed the godfather!!! how can you be mean to a sad little baby who directed the godfather!!!
"Spent decades thinking about" 💀💀 I had a story idea from my teenage years that my screenwriting professor literally told me to give on because "being precious holds you back" and I did NOT give up on my idea but I find it hilarious if you're famous and rich you can do whatever you want and get away with the most heinous things. Hollywood is a freaking joke. I will argue their actions DO affect their art because people have to understand your intentions, desires, morals, and ideals COME THROUGH in your art no matter how much you double down it doesn't. Hearing about all these tragedies brings me to tears.
Separating the art from the artist is NOT about whether a person puts part of themselves into their work…. It is about being able to appreciate a work while not feeling the same about the artist.
When you said "old school with women" i imagined something like my experiences with old men, for example professors. They would ask when i will marry someone, they assumed i only have A+ grades, they kinda spoke to women students in a different cadence than with male peers, kinda treated women differently, more like children. Which can be annoying or even upsetting sometimes, but ultimately pretty harmless. But GOD DAMN sexual harassment much? The fuck, groping? The fuck. Thats not old school, thats pile of shit
uhhhh....treating male and female pupils differently isn't harmless, attitude-wise. It's how academia perpetuates the stereotype that women don't belong in certain fields, and deserve to get paid less.
I haven't gotten far into the video at all but I've been yelling into the void about this man for years because of his support of the jeepers creepers p*do and silencing his victim which I'm sure you're going to address. I'm so glad you're covering this because so many people have no idea or like woody allen, excuse this because of his "genius" or "contributions to art" or whatever
This is what FFC's wife wrote about him in her memoir (he cheated on her during their marriage): "“There is part of me that has been waiting for Francis to leave me, or die, so that I can get my life the way I want it.”
I'm happy that you brought up Victor Salva's crimes and how Coppola essentially "gave him a career." I actually learned about this from watching dreading (crime and psychology)'s video about Salva and have greatly disliked Coppola ever since. Needless to say, these allegations of creepy behaviour really don't shock me.
I mean, we have A long history culture of justifying abuse in the name of "creative genius" Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock come to mind immediately
20:15 "separating the art from the artist" is only something you can really do when the artist is dead. picasso was a terrible man, but we can view the art separately.
I think it's also possible if you are vocal about the artists wrongs and how they affect the work. I love one piece but I regularly remind others about odas friendship with predators and how he portrays teenagers as well as the racism that can be seen in it
Francis Ford Coppola being willing to give a convicted child predator financial and professional support makes me wonder what skeletons could be in HIS closet. Allegedly, of course 🙃
yeah i was about to bring up the victor salva stuff before i heard it mentioned here, i think jeepers creepers is a great horror movie but really it shouldn't exist after what he did, he should have been completely blacklisted and coppola aiding him after the conviction should be mentioned more
19:42: I agree with this point, and even when we enjoy good works from terrible people, the terrible people still need to be held accountable for their actions, which is separate from the art they produce.
18:58 that's how a lot of people justify the terrible things they do/have done. "I'm the chosen one because I'm better than others and have a talent making lots of money".... Talent doesn't mean you're gods chosen and everyone are side characters in your story. They don't see people as people, just objects to use and treat however for their amusement
Im so happy to see society finally GIVE AF when celebrities speak out about abuse. It feels so so so long overdue. Its depressing how many times ive heard people say, oh no, not him, but hes so talented!
No, there's nothing there. Investigated, nothing ever charged. And before you claim preferential treatment, The Farrow and O'Sullivan names would have carried far more weight, particularly in Connecticut. I suggest reading Moses Farrow's account of living with Mia, his adoptive mother, his other adopted (all non-caucasian) siblings and Mia's biological children. And how brutally she treated her adopted children, as opposed to her blood offspring, and then come back and assess who was the monster.
All the awful horrific terrible stuff aside, it had always BAFFLED me that FFC took such an interest in Salva. Like dude, your idea of an exceptionally talented filmmaker is the guy who made Jeepers Creepers? That movie isn't even that good by the standards of 2000s horror. And that bar is LOW. You're gonna excuse his horrific crimes because you believe so strongly in the artistic value of his movie (**checks notes**)... "Clown House"?? Again, this is so completely and utterly besides the actual point here. But seriously, what???
It isn’t even separating the art from the artist at this point, it’s if that artist made something with a cultural impact then it protects them from criticism because they are talented, I wish people would just be more honest and say that’s how they really feel
Yup, come and say it with your (their) whole chest. "I'm okay with sexual predators as long as they make things that I personally enjoy". Stop hiding behind the concept of separating art from artists. Maybe if creeps were summarily dismissed by society fewer of them would be in power.
"That's not you consuming art without supporting the artist. That's just supporting the artist." EXACTLY!!! The entire bit at the end discussing separating art from the artist is something a lot of people need to hear I think. It's like people learned that phrase and decided "oh, I see, I can spend money on art created by people who do shitty things (and who often times use that money to get away with doing said shitty things) as long as I say "I don't support the artist" while doing it" and it's really frustrating
Whenever anyone uses the word "woke" in any shape or form as an argumentative cornerstone they already lost all credibility. Periodt. Coppola sounds like an obnoxious grifter there and given the wording of his lawsuit he's clearly steering into that direction. Can't wait for him to join Kevin Spacey on Daily Wire for a big whining session. The primary issue really is that people of his stature are completly cut off from any accountability and even if they're caught they always end up either with no punishment or one that's unproportionally miniscule compared to what they actually deserved. After all Bill Cosby is running free again already. Also, there's no fucking way you can seperate art from the artist because all art is intrinsically connected to the artist. Literally welded onto them.
I had a colleague like him at work and you couldn’t even report him because he’s “just acting like a big brother” and “he has a wife and kids” like that doesn’t matter nothing excuses being a creep.
That's shameful, he should be rightfully facing reprecussion and punishment. And even I hate how some people in these sensitive situations some people jump to the conclusion that alleged blames are false giving no space for the victim (till there's no particular reason to be against them).
I also have to wonder if the extra who claimed she was okay with his behavior, only said so out of fear that she’d never be able to work in Hollywood if she spoke out against him. Most extras (especially young ones) want to become big names, and considering the fact that “not playing by the rules” can result in blacklisting, she might be trying to show that she’s willing to “play by the rules,” even if she’s NOT okay with it.
@@valolafson6035I agree in principle but hollywood really does have a problem of creeps protecting creeps. There's a big concentration of power at the top and an endless supply of vunerable people (adults and even children) trying to make it big as actors for them to exploit and ab*se. If you do get caught, you have not only the money but the influence to just brush it off and keep going, assuming your victim is even believed in the first place since your friends on the top will cover for you.
The only instance when "art from the artist" is OK is if the artist is just an asshole/curmudgeonly. Take Blake Lively for example, if she wasn't insensitive about the DV themes in "It Ends With Us", if she didn't get married on a plantation, or use the T slur with no accountability, I would consume her media. If it were JUST the cafe society interviews and the general rudeness, I wouldn't care. It's when people violate or cause real harm that I have an issue with.

They use real arguments like this in these hearings and it works for a lot of them.

exactly like “old school” does not equal morally correct. in fact, most things that are “old school” are extremely immoral lmao
It would be sexual assault and harassment back then and still is now
We can actually use as an example old movies for how this behaviour was still wrong: anytime a woman was grabbed in a way that Coppola did, he would be slapped, if a guy put his face on a woman's neck usually she would yell: let me go!

Y’all, is it woke to condemn domestic abuse?
"Woke" is appropriated black american slang. It does not refer to people who promote Diversty, Domestic abuse or Left leaning ideals. it is a corruption of the word "Awake" meaning being aware. And when they were young, their argument was they were too handsome/famous/rich/etc. to be bad.

Oh my god. That’s disgusting and horrendous 🤮
That’s why I can’t stand the people who have worked with him in films still defending him just because he made them rich. Fuck that and fuck them
Hello, a little correction: Victor Salva was NOT involved with the 4th film (Jeepers Creepers: Reborn) anymore after his Jeepers Creepers 3 controversy in 2017.

With the amount of artists being caught red handed at being creepy or down right criminal, it’s getting really hard to consume media morally :/. Every time I stop watching or reading something from a problematic author, the next new author I start getting into turns out to be a creep too. It’s getting exhausting vetting each new artist or author or producer etc. to make sure I’m not supporting a creep. At this point… I’m tired of

Remember, kids: the best time to be a creep is never✨
I love this
What? I thought this was the best time 😢
Its time to remember that hard truth.
I don't believe Coppola did anything in those movies. He had other people do all the work and then took the credit.
@@tbprodutionsThat’s not true at all lol. Yes he is a creep. Though in his day he was an amazing director.
@@tbprodutions tell me you've never seen Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse without telling me you've never seen Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
the worst part about this is that people are gonna defend him and say that those actresses should be thankful to be in one of his movies
as an artist, i think in most cases an artist's work contains part of the artist themself. But art IS the humans that make it.
so true
very very true. personally my approach has always been to keep the artist in mind when consuming the art in question because of that influence. like D'Angelo said, consuming the art is fine, it's the monetary support that's the issue-and consuming the art while understanding those influences, even if you love the work and have different personal meanings attached, is also a good thing to do
It’s kind of crazy how often when artist come out as intolerant or abusive that when you go back and look at their art, you can see some of the signs.
this is absolutely true, but i dont think its meant to be so literal. i think separating the art from the artist is a (arguably not good) metaphor for saying what they're actually trying to get at, which is, like d'angelo says, just because someone makes something good, doesn't mean that you have to defend them. and art IS the humans that make it, but art also allows the artist to show only what they want seen, like they say about social media and content creators. so its not gonna show everything.
this has always been my personal take with the phenomenon. while there definitely is work that can still be enjoyed while giving no thought to the author, oftentimes what the author believes or does are reflected in their work to some degree. this can sometimes be minor and criticized while still enjoying the work as a whole, but sometimes the author bleeds into the work to such an extent that their harmful views/actions can be seen in the work itself with the context. one should be critical of any work they engage in, as its important to be able to have these nuanced takes on media and theres very little media in which such nuance isnt necessary (the only one i can think of is chis sweet home ekdnekcn), and this especially is true for media where its known that the creator has an unsavory reputation that can show in their work. none of this makes a work impossible to enjoy, but its important to consider, especially for those who claim to care about a creators bad behavior but refuse to engage with how it presents in the work itself
i think i repeated myself Buh. basically personal example- some members of msi suck, and this bleeds into some of their songs, so i just listen to the ones that dont contain anything related to their nasty behavior via reuploads so i also dont add to any streaming revenue. its pretty simple, but some folks Really seem incapable of understanding that what they enjoy can be criticized without it being an attack on them
It’s ironic that Sofia Coppola (his daughter) directed ‘Priscilla’ which highlights how famous people can get away with abuse because of their ‘fame & talent’.
Ironic? Or maybe she just saw an example of this behaviour in her father?
@@NatBKyiv Considering how close Sophia is with her father IRL? It wouldn't surprise me.

whenever i think about separating the art from the artist, it is always, ALWAYS in the context of appreciating the art itself and NOT the person behind it. i will never defend somebody purely because i like their art, nor will i try to justify their heinous actions because they are talented. as an artist, i simply want to enjoy good art when i see it. i am allowed to like a painting and hate who made it. lovely video as always d'angelo you are FEEDING us
I never watched any of Coppola's movies but finding out about this was... disgusting, to say the least. As someone who went through something similar, his actions and behavior is absolutely unacceptable.

i hate the "seperate art from artist" like, who made the mf art??? who poured their own soul and experiences into that art?
Literally, people will be all about the power of art for self expression and relaying a message until the moment something skeevy happens. Plenty of art has a different context when you know more about the creator (like how stories about people who are "different" being heroes ring hollow when the creator hates people who are different from them in real life, for example).
@@SolaireHighwindsometimes It's just blatant like H.P Lovecraft

It’s such an insidious tactic. They downplay everything and hope no one notices their description is absurd.
