I’ve got to say, huge congratulations on landing this interview. The video might only have 23k views, but it’s a real shame that today’s generation doesn’t fully appreciate the cultural giant that is Francis Ford Coppola. Major props to you for pulling off such an epic interview. As for Megalopolis, I can already tell it’s a film that might be criticized for being pretentious in the short term, but in the long run, it’s bound to become culturally relevant and stand the test of time.
My God, I don’t care if reviews are mixed, or what any of my friends say, I’m watching this movie. Such a great discussion. Ryan & Francis are both gifts to this world. “The hardest person to forgive is yourself.” All the books referenced. All the history. I need to rewatch this with my yellow legal pad and take notes. Wonderful, beautiful stuff. Truly.
What does a man gain from the world if he loses his own soul ? Madness, please stay humble and don't lose your life to gain it you might regret your loss again.
I went to kinda laugh at it. I was shocked to discover that it was excellent. It’s a series of massive creative chances, and most of them (for me) succeeded. It’s exhilarating to watch such an uncompromising movie in a cineplex.
Love this conversation. Very often do we hear filmmakers talk about films that influenced them so it’s very interesting to hear Coppola speak of the books he’s read.
I don't know who you are man but this interview is golden. Jump right into the process of writing and creativity and not dwelling and wasting time on FFC repeating his past filmography
There are many good movies that you watch and forget, but whether it’s good, bad, or ugly, Megalopolis is a movie you will remember forever. Hats off to the Master Craftsman!
It´s Giovanni Pico della Mirandola Mr. Coppola Sir. I always loved his films and his interviews. This one was blast, great job by the interviewer. I can't wait to go to the theaters and see Megalopolis.
That was great, thanks for sharing. I like how he mentioned that money was not the important thing.. one tends to forget that, especially when measuring the success of films vs their box office.
I had no intention of watching Megalopolis before seeing this. I watched it a couple days ago now and can very easily understand why reviews are mixed 😅. It is not kind to those who don’t know any roman history or background for the film. Personally I felt very much it was the kind of film that needs to be studied more than watched. Great experience, great interview!
Or maybe people can’t put their phones down long enough to watch tv? Most podcasts/TH-cam are background noise. You don’t really have to engage with it visually. You at least have to watch most tv programmes, otherwise you aren’t getting all the information, although there are lots of tv programmes that could be considered background noise too.
@@curiositytax9360 I’m more specifically talking about being able to discuss topics like this on platforms where it isn’t just about providing “entertainment” and forced, rehearsed comedy… look at the Dick Cavette show compared to talk shows now… that was more the aim of my comment
This is hands down the best interview/conversation I have ever seen. I had to keep pausing to take note of the books recommended. I think the movie is incredible. I saw it yesterday and cannot get it out of my mind. Like the first time I saw Apocalypse Now, I was mesmerized, dazed and went on to watch it multiple times. Will definitely be returning to the cinema to see Megalopolis again. The master has brought back cinema as art.
…or watch Chris Burden’s Megalopolis II, stare at it and daydream for hours. Can’t wait to see this film…on blue ray, kicked back in bed on the wide screen.
…I can sense your enthusiasm for Apocalypse Now. I was fortunate enough to see the San Francisco opening of it, I believe at the North Point Theater (god, is that right? On Bay St North Beach) when prior to having the credits added to the print, they passed out printed four color pamphlets containing the photography and text. Just a note…Francis has always operated from the parallax.
Que charla maravillosa, y pensar que hay gente que dice que coppola está gagá, yo quiero estar lúcido como él a los 85 años, un genio y un verdadero artista. Gracias Francis.
Great podcast! I really wish he had done a buch of podcasts leading up to the release of Megalopolis. I think that would have helped create buzz for it.
this is a fascinating and engaging interview, thank you for the opportunity. it's amusing to hear Coppola reference Ed Koch and Robert Moses in the same breath LOL, that speaks volumes. I can't wait till Megalopolis becomes available on Amazon, I wonder if there will be a "directors cut" which has been suggested by a few reviewers here.
I have never heard of The Epic of Kings but I am getting into it tonight at bed time. ANCIENT PERSIA AND ANCIENT INDIA HAS SOME OF THE DOPEST TALES AND I TAKE THE EXTRA STEP TO SAY ITS TRUTH
That was great made me wanna read and watch a few of those books and such that were alluded To…yes we need more conversations with these older wiser beings like Francis … of course age is not necessarily synonymous with wisdom as we have many examples in our culture of this ..
I love his mythos, ethos, and kairos of the ideas behind #Megalopolis and Coppola's genius body of work. I also often call #SouthFlorida one of the nations & world's best megalopolis's. Martin Luther's impact on the future of the printing press is still one of the most relevant and timeless and influential moments in History. "Only the winners write the history" Lawrence's famous quote "Nothing is written" is a precise and parsimonious way to say I don't care what the reality is- I create my own reality and a reality for the benefit of the most. George Orwell often repeats the mantra that 2 + 2 = 5 to show that if you repeat something enough people begin to accept it as the truth
I took Latin in college, and while we didn't learn any of the famous speeches from the great Roman speakers, my dad had learned it when he went to school as a teen, decades earlier. So when I saw that Adam Driver's character was named Catilina here I immediately thought "Quousque tandem abutere patientia nostra?"
I had the pleasure and honor of cooking dinner for Francis and his wife about 20 years ago. He's an amazing person, a very grounded and gracious individual. He treated my wife and I as peers and equals, even though I'm just a Maine country boy.
George Lucas mentioned in an interview this year that he doesn't ask for feedback on his movies from the general public because they aren't qualified to give their opinion. "Not like Francis". He said he'll ask his "housekeeping" what they think. It was kind of a revealing comment about their attitudes.

What a beautifully smooth and spontaneous interview this is. Informative and a delight to listen to. Sad to hear about the loss of Mr Coppola's son and now his wife... the rich and famous also endure heartache.
I took three years of Latin in school and I very much agree that the ideas captured in the writings were an indirect influence, but well appreciated. SPQR. But the first sentence we learned was: AGRICOLA ET POETA EN SILVAM SUNT. To this day, none of our classmates know what they were doing together there.
Most of the New Age is indeed deceitful dangerous deceptive rubbish.... However, the occult ( simply means hidden ) knowledge is real, and used everyday by the trillionaires and billionaires who run this shit show and control most of us.... As Dylan sang, " don't criticize what you don't understand....".....!

Do not forget the older generations are also stupid. Loved the movie.

It was an amazing movie. What did you think?
Love this conversation. Very often do we hear filmmakers talk about films that influenced them so it’s very interesting to hear Coppola speak of the books he’s read.
Francis you are a deeply beautiful man. Abundant blessings. Live long(er) and prosper.
I can listen to the great Coppola for hours. He has the substantive humility of the truly brilliant, creative soul
Mr. Coppola seems so down to earth considering the incomparable works of genius attached to him.
Francesco Coppola is a very strong name!
He is a legendary director that we all have the priviledge to still have around.
I don't know who you are man but this interview is golden. Jump right into the process of writing and creativity and not dwelling and wasting time on FFC repeating his past filmography
Wonderful conversation. And bravo maestro Coppola!
Coppola and his daughter are phenomenal. 🎬
Spectacular. So glad I watched this.
Wishing FFC All The Best
He and his daughter are both brilliant
no. just him. sorry.
This man is a brilliant thinker. I know the new movie will be fantastic.
There are many good movies that you watch and forget, but whether it’s good, bad, or ugly, Megalopolis is a movie you will remember forever. Hats off to the Master Craftsman!
I'm stoked that Coppola is back with a new film. Megalopolis.
Thanks for hosting & posting this beautiful interview with an extraordinary director, and, it appears also, man.
Just WOW❤❤❤❤❤
Sublime conversation… riveting. thank you!
Wow! Great interview Ryan!! Now have a list of books to read up on and some movies to watch! Sending energies to both of y'all; great men!! Thank you!
I have to stop playback to announce my excitement about this conversation. People like Francis are who make NYC the capital of the world.
There is something about witnessing two people with quite the age gap connect on an academic and artistic level. People are magical.
Few people are magical, most are fuking morons, in both meanings of the phrase....
You are magical as well.
greetings from germany! what a wonderful conversation, thank you so much sharing this. great!

Hands down, one of the greatest directors of all time. Wouldn't you agree?
Indeed!

Top ten definitely. He is a pioneer who took big risks and made iconic films. There really are a lot of great directors.
Top 5 on my list

This is why TV died and TH-cam/podcasting has thrived. Can put out adult, intelligent conversations for people who want to learn and keep learning
Or maybe people can’t put their phones down long enough to watch tv?

Cavett....I have a love / hate relationship with him. Such an annoying smarmy little man, I love to hate him.
@@rockypalladinofilm your comment is accurate. And that is why TV is dying.

I learned more in this interview than 14 years (or more) of school. GREAT interview!

Thank you very much for this beautiful conversation with Mr. Coppola 🌼💛☘️
A lot of cultural knowledge here, Thank you!
Marcus Aurelius is who really got me to study stoicism. What a great model of a man
Just added a few books to my reading list.
Such a beautiful and personal interview. Im looking fwd to seeing the movie.
Thank you you and Francis are now good friends. How wonderful!
He is blessed to have a big family.
GREAT CONVERSATION
This guy make the greatest movie of all time. I stand up
My top favorite directors are Hitchcock, Kubrick, and Bunuel.
Que charla maravillosa, y pensar que hay gente que dice que coppola está gagá, yo quiero estar lúcido como él a los 85 años, un genio y un verdadero artista. Gracias Francis.
Loved this conversation so much. Coppola is a great director and a great man. Thanx so much Ryan.
It is 9.10.2024, and truly the only instance this year that I've watched an hour long video without being distracted. Thank you guys for this.
Just got out of the theater after seeing Megalopolis. I loved it. It's a work of genius.
