This is montreal idea: talk to people on their balconies. I also just arrived here from Winnipeg and I love seeing people chilling on their balconies. That's not really something that happens in Winnipeg! People just enjoy life here

I was born and raised in Montreal . I now live in Vancouver . The tam tams have been there since I known. It was a ritual to go a couple of Sundays every summer , usually on my way with friends for brunch in Mile End . Keep up the good work from a guy originally from western NDG. 👍
Hi Dan. I love the Tam Tam's too. The first thing I was brought to do, when I moved to Montreal, 20 years ago, (in the middle of the night) one night, was to climb the mountain at midnight, not on the path, but up the side, in the dirt and rocks. That was an experience. Then on Sunday was the Tam Tam's. What I found that was interesting, that yes, there are smaller drum circles, but at some point, someone in the main circle starts a beat, and then everyone around the circle follows in, and you get that swelling of sound from all sides, because everyone with a drum is following the leader for a time, then the dancing begins, and it just goes on and on. It's been a long time since I've been up there myself. If you climb the mountain in the daylight, on part of the path, there is a huge rock. and a clearing, facing the Big O from Above over the Tam Tam site, that looks out. That is my favorite spot on the mountain side.

Brings back memories from the 90s when I used to spend some time there. Seems like the tam-tam is a bubble in the 'space-time continuum' as it seems after 30 there's nothing that has changed. I could compared with pictures from then and there wouldn't be any difference (well, there's one, weed used to be illegal then).
We used to bring a few clients from the west coast, or new employees from the US (was working in the 3d animation special fx software industry) to make them discover how cool was Montreal.
Keep up the good vibe on those videos, what you are doing is great.
"...people get here every Sunday since the 70's, but why": because when weed was illegal, it's always been tolerated on Sundays at the tam-tams!

I'm 62 years old. I went to the tam-tams when I was in my late teens so at the end of the 1970s and it was already existing for a certain amount of years.
I don't think it's possible to pin point THE first year but I wouldn't be surprised it was somewhere during the 1960s, maybe around the Expo that took place in 1967. It was the vibe at the time...
Tam tams officially begins first Sunday in May & ends second Sunday in October, thanksgiving weekend.

I loved how you started the video "I have nothing better to do in a sunday than sit alone in the park and talk to my camera" and then you got in the middle of all the gossips of the two drum circles origins. Hahah. This video was special. Thanks, Dan!
In terms of purpose, Tam-Tams used to be rather more political before cannabis was legalized. Effectively, the 4/20 celebrations you used to see once a year in other Canadian cities were a weekly occurence at Tam-Tams. Thousands of people dancing, communing, and protesting (for the legalization of cannabis, but also against police brutality or racism, and, on a broader level, against conformism), every summer Sunday, in the most peaceful manner known to man. The sheer number of people there at the time (think 10k+) prevented the police from doing anything. They just stayed on the outskirts, with paramedics, in case anyone needed help. I gotta admit, Tam-Tams have died down a little since cannabis was legalized.
I'm here for a dose of nostalgia for the city I left my heart in. I went to Concordia from 2003-2009 and it was some of the best times in my life. Suggestion: Go deeper into the arts scene. The spoken word poetry scene. The grafitti and street art scene. It's an endless well of culture and creation. Soak up every moment of being there. You'll remember it forever. Blessings on your path! You are doing a great job of capturing MTL's realness. Thanks for your efforts.
haha - you hear lots of people saying "I could never leave." The only way I managed to leave every time I've been back is to be slightly inebriated so I don't feel the pain of leaving. How crazy. Now I live in Melbourne, Australia which is also a great place but there is NO PLACE ON EARTH LIKE MTL.

A tam-tam is a type of African drum. I think the Tam Tam on Mount Royal began in the 1980s, but it was well established by the early 90s. They used to put up a sign that said "A. A. A.", I think it stood for Association d'Artistes Autonome" or something like that. The beating of the tam tams always reminded me of a heartbeat. Especially when you were at a certain distance, the beating would begin to resonate.
I seem to recall the Tam Tam being more crowded in the 90s, but that may just be an effect of the pandemic. There used to be people all around the concrete area selling trinkets, mainly handmade jewelry and drug paraphernalia. I didn't see anyone selling anything in your video.
Also, back in the 90s the Tam Tam were policed by young recruits or student policemen. There would typically be one police car with a pair of real cops, then the student police would patrol on foot. I didn't notice much of a police presence in your video.
aww your so adorable ! i love it . Iam living in montreal now for 4 years , and i have never been to TamTam yet !! THO i walked the belvedere last sunday, i could hear the tamtams from the top of the Mont-royal and it was great. I will go see the Tamtams closer after seeing your video. :)
One of the things I miss most about Montreal. Tam tans are just a celebration of humanity. Everyone’s welcome. Any socioeconomic status, gender, colour, etc
I went to Mont Royal the other week with my dad-who's from Montreal-just down the street fr the TamTams it was a really nice, and quite peaceful experience🌈🌈

It seems like everyone has a say in Montreals Tam Tam.
It started in 80's as a meeting place for refugees, the area is well known as the Artists gathering and in the 80s, this was the pickup place for French Canadian girls.
It all started as a single drum and grew to become the cesspool that it has become. Only Africans used to meet and bring drums, the Hippies join in and OUT went the Rhythm.
Used to play Cuban and African style Congas, and once many drummers started clanging, many originals went away, moved to Toronto, and Tam Tam stayed..

I’ve always wondered where exactly they tam happens in the mountain. Now I know. Maybe I can go next year summer!
I remember when TamTam started in Montreal. In the beginning people think it was cute get to getter and it becomes bigger and bigger and almost every weekend during summer…eventually some people complain about the noise and people see like a gathering of people who has nothing to do and no backyard to chill. Most festivals are sponsored by the city and has security and a well tuned organization …and all the required permits. Except TamTam is just a gathering of people who like, but I think it’s now regulated …Montreal has so much festival that if you don’t like noise and people, you better move to the suburbs. If you think French language is a hot topic…believe me, urban sprawl is another hot topic.
Similar to the Drum Circle parties at the beach in Vancouver.

Here is another expanation of the origin of the tam-am from the Vienna Symphonic Library:
"The name tam-tam is derived from the Malaysian word tammittam, an onomatopoeic term for “drum”. Musical metal discs (gongs) originated in China in the 7th century BC. From there they spread to eastern Asia."

Great video, catches perfectly the mood of the event. I first attended Tam Tams 12 years ago, and it was packed and extremely energetic. Unfortunately i went again last month and it was only sparsely attended. Also, the free, relaxed vibe just wasn't there . There was one tall drummer who was super controlling, trying to tell everyone what to do. I'm wondering if the change is just a fluke or if the vibe has permanently changed. After all, this was once a refuge for the weed and alternative culture. Now that weed is legal in montreal, and you can safely smoke it on any street corner, perhaps this may have vacated the purpose of Tam Tams.

It's an accurate portrayal of my day when I filmed it. That's all I try to do. I don't research beforehand because I don't want to make a "facts show". I want to show the experience someone has exploring a city. . Thankfully I've got commenters who share more information for those who are interested :)
@@TheNewTravel I believe you have misconstrued my comment. I am simply referring to the statue and who you assumed he was. If no one had corrected you it would leave your viewers with misinformation. This is not to say anything negative about your style of filming and your portrayal of the tam tam days in our city. Similar to how you casually said that the 2 drum circles were perhaps rivals. Nowhere near the truth. Now if you hadn’t come across the guy who explained them your viewers would be left with wrong info.
If you come again India .........you should visit Mathura , vrindavan , and south part of India ......north part of India is cool , south is hot , eastern part have lots of valley's and western part have forts

Been here for 30 years myself and I'm 99% sure those people there today are the same ones I saw 30 years ago ;-).. jokes aside when you get there it's a family BBQ energy (Without the bbq) and now it's not an issue but back then that was the place to smoke weed hahaha.

A few decades ago the city tried to regulate the Tam Tams by imposing licenses on the buskers. The outcry was so huge they backed off on the idea.

Tam-tam is not French for drum. It's would be tambour or batterie. Tam-tam is a slang word that could means drum.
