You should visit le jardin botanique and le parc Maisonneuve, I'd say the parc is one of the main free place people from Rosemont and Hochelaga go to. It's such a great place. Also the jardin botanique is very special at the moment, it's usually full of tourists but due to travelling restrictions right now, it's such a peacefull place to visit.

The drink you had in the park was called 1642. That was the year Montréal was founded by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. Nice how the universe brought those things together: you choosing a drink named for the founding of Montréal and the borough you're exploring that shares its name with the founder.

That's my neighbourhood!!! I've been living in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve for the past 15 years and I can tell you its reputation is a bit dated. It used to my a tough neighbourhood in the 80's and 90's but not anymore. There are still some rougher patches here and there but I wouldn't consider it as dangerous.
I like that Hochelaga-Maisonneuve still have its unique vibe.

Hochelaga and the east in general was my home for most of my adult life. It has somehow kept it's reputation of being not safe although it is. I have seen it evolved greatly in the past 25 years and it is definitely a great neighbourhood. Also, most of Montreal is safe.

I'm practically crying. I used to live in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve not far from Place Valois (where you got your pannini), and I miss this place very-much. It's very safe here, the worse that can happen someone will jump in front of you begging for money. I preferred buying them food, which was always gracefully accepted. My friends live in H-M, so I get to go there. Free Montreal Symphony Orchestra (I miss Kent Nagano)concert in August outdoors at the esplanade of the olympic stadium. In fact, there is freguently stuff going on there. Heated outdoor skating rink in the winter, rave parties...The parc you were at has petanque courts. You must have passed by the underpass, I'm sure, did you see the amazing wall art? Ontario street freguenly has street closures for family fun activities in the warm months, such as acrobatic shows, crafts for kids, etc etc.

Nice! I really enjoyed wandering around Hochelaga when were were there a few years ago. Our only disappointment was the tower at the Olympic Stadium - I would not recommend going up top. It is way too expensive. You can get just as good a view for free on Mt. Royal. Your next mission: try St. Henri. We stayed on another trip to Montreal and loved it - especially the grand parks and the awesome trails along the Lachine Canal (with the St. Ambroise craft beer patio). The long rows of old red brick houses in St. Henri reminded me of the great Canadian novel The Tin Flute by Gabriel Roy - a must read while you are in Montreal!

Bobo is an accronym that stands for "Beau chic beau genre". It basically means bourgeois. It gets thrown around a lot these days in Hochelaga because the neighbourhood is rapidly gentrifying (e.g. little cafes, yoga studios etc.) That neighbourhood used to be the poorest in the city, and the aforementioned gentrification has driven rent way up, which forces old timers, people who've lived there all their life, out of the neighbourhood.
*edit* I'm sorry to say, but if a restaurant in Hochelaga has a blackboard outside and serves cashew chicken sandwiches instead of steamed hot dogs and poutine, it's definitely Bobo.

    • @TheNewTravel
      @TheNewTravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah I thought it might have been an anti-gentrification thing. In Mexico there's a word sort of like that, they say "fresa" (meaning strawberry) for people who are upper-class and unwanted in certain neighbourhoods haha

Hey great videos man ! I'm a born and raised Montrealer from the Plateau and I am really proud of my city. It is really special as a city, because so many multicultural communities live together and there is also a certain social mixity (you can live in a million dollar condo and your neighbor house is worth a couple 100k). I always say that Montreal is kinda like a solar system with many small planets. There is so much going on and you can miss so much stuff if you are not paying attention. As a latino growing up here, I can share with you a lot of info if you are interested. I also very familiar with most of the neighborhoods. If you want to some help for your neighborhood videos, feel free to contact me.

If you're looking for one of the best microbrewery in Montréal, I highly recommend you Messorem Bracitorium in Griffintown! La terrasse là-bas est super belle et rappelle les beer gardens de l'Europe!

If you like parks, try "Frederick Back" in St Michel. It's 7km and you feel like you're not in the city anymore

I grew up in Montreal, but I haven't been back in 15 years. While the downtown area looks quite different (in Google Earth), this video shows Hochelaga Maisonneuve is largely the same, save for some murals and parks here and there.

I don't know if somebody answered yet to your question about the taco place called Taqueria d'Hochelag, but it has been relocated at the corner of Aird avenue and Sainte-Catherine East. They are also on Doordash and maybe some other app like this.

Nice video Dan! I've moved to this part of town from the ave Papineau (Gay village) last week. I recognize all these spots.
My girlfriend is Québecer and she mentioned this area has become alot less ghetto than it used to be.
I'm for sure gonna check out that sweet shop (fried eggs 🍳 and cola bottles) are you for real!!! 🤪 what's the name?

Hochelaga : Pronounce as "Hush" laga.
    Maisonneuve : May - Zone - euve.
Hochelaga its a Iroquois name of a village (Osheaga) that was somewhere around in the 1500s.

I'm sorry if you answered this already... what is the name of the candyshop you visited? (around 4 minutes). I live in Hochelaga and I didn't know about it. I feel like I'm missing out on something haha. Thanks!

That was awesome.... try NDG...for a change...English area of Montreal... ;) I lived all over Montreal, form Downtown to the east (Anjou ) to the West, ( Westmount ) ... I loved it all. Now living on Vancouver Island...yup..on the other side of the country. Missing Montreal so much. ;(

    • @sunflower-oo1ff

@ Its not that big a move, if you have made up your mind...one mile after another mile... Now Australia or New Zealand...that would be quite the move. But anyway, I wasn't even living in Montreal anymore when I made that move. I was living in beautiful historical village of Merrickville in Ontario on a 50 acres farm.Vancouver Island is awesome if you love the rain, bears and mostly cougars. My co worker lost a goat to a cougar last week... ;( we have plenty of deers, and rabbits...go figure...Its a bit wild out here except for the towns, but even the towns...and cities...it doesn't stop the cougars from coming over. I would never run on a trail here without bear spray. You can use it on cougar too, but you better be fast...cuz the cougar is always hiding... ;(Montreal like Toronto, are big cities, and am done with that for sure ! you wonder how it is...just do it. Its doable, we only live once ..I think ;)

Oh Maisonneuve was my dad's old neighborhood when he was a kid before moving to Northern Ontario. I've yet to visit the area. I'm in Halifax now and my trip was canceled by Covid. Maybe next summer I'll drive up.
What's your fave neighborhood? I'd like to plan a month long stay at some point, I really don't use my French enough anymore.

I love it! Just goes to show how big Canada is as a country :) Someone who came to the country just a little while back can know a place a lot better than most Canadians do. I guess that goes for most places, but it's especially prevalent/common place here lol

A "Bobo" is a bourgeois/bohème ( ie :a middle class guy who moves to a working class neighborhood with the side effect of making the rent more expensive )
