My aunt took me to see this performance when I was 10 years old it was the first time I had ever saw a live play, I have carrying the experience in my heart and I am now 56. I have loved the theater every since.

Madonna's rendition of this song is very good, but her main strength was acting the part in the film, for which she was an inspired choice. Elaine could sustain the performance for the long run of the show, which maybe Julie Covington couldn't have. (I like Julie's best - probably at least in part because it was the first I got to know - and I think it _was_ written for her, or at least with her in mind.)
Madonna didn´t nail anything. Elaine and Madonna sung different scores (Elaine´s score was much higher and demanding vocally). Elaine performed live every night. Madonna took months and recorded in a studio. Evita was an international success because of the theatre show and all the great actresses that played the very demanding performance. Madonna is great in her pseudo-porno shows but not good for musical theatre. Ask the great Patti luponne what does she think of Madonna´s performance....lol. I have been so very kind with my comments..
Sometimes I wonder what's the point in auditioning for a musical leading part when only the commercial big names get it for the sake of box office? So much talent out there that never make it with a few exceptions. But we could go on discussing this forever. Madonna's fans will never see anything wrong or admit there were better singers/actresses to play the part in the movie. What is done it's done anyway.
I love Elaine page and I know she's the original theatre Evita but her usual style doesn't seem to fit here. She doesn't hold a lot of her notes at the beginning (strange, sixes, sevens). Maybe it's because I've watched so many versions of it so this one sounded weird to me. This is a very beautiful song and does not need any stylistic artifice, JMHO.
You clearly really know your music and what you're talking about so I'd love you to explain what you mean by not holding her notes such as "sixes and sevens." I thought she did hold her notes.
Sure. For example, for the words strange, feel, nines, sun, mostly at the end of each measure or bar, they're written as either half notes or dotted half notes. That means the singer has to sustain them for two or three beats, depending on whether they're dotted or not. The way she sings them, they sound like 8th or 16th notes. That's what I mean about not sustaining the notes. I'm not saying that it's wrong. It still sounds amazingly beautiful. A lot of pop singers do this, especially when they have to sing live. It's not because they can't sing it. Even Julie Andrews with her 7-octave range used to do it. It's just a stylistic choice. However, I'm a purist so I just like the notes to be sung as they were written.
@janna bee- I've never seen Elaine Paige perform live...I wasn't around when she originally performed the role of Eva Peron in Evita.... People comment on many posts about her lack of power when she is singing this song...My mother had her album "Stages" which was released in 1983, studio album it may be, I have it on CD now For me, that is the most powerful and best sung version ever...I've listened to many versions, even the performance from Julie Covington, and nobody can hold a candle to Elaine in the album version, the angst and the passion is there..Anybody who has that album will know what I mean

She has a beautiful voice but I prefer Patti LuPone. For me, she will always be the definitive Evita.
