@@natarajanmechaa3616 For BS6 engines it depends on the JASO and API standereds. Recomended engine oil for My Suzuki Burgman is 10w30 API - SL & JASO - MA2. Now how I can trust a seller above the guideline of my scooty's owner manual!
Short trips do the most "damage" to engine oil. The reason is that in a modern EFI engine, more fuel is injected when the engine is cold in order to keep it running (which is why you can smell fuel coming out of the exhaust in the early stages). That fuel will seep past the piston rings (compression as well as oil scrapper rings), and end up in the engine oil. This causes the oil to become both diluted and to break down (detergents in the fuel). However when the engine oil gets hot (the engine's normal operating temperature) and particularly when the car is driven on the highway, The fuel that is present in the engine oil gets turned back into a vapour and gets removed via the PCV system (where it gets sucked into the engine, unless you have a catch can). If this doesn't happen the oil will break down quicker (which is also why "highway miles" are less damaging than "city miles"), Some engines are more sensitive to this than others, The ones that I know about (due to having the same car), is the Toyota Camry (2011-2017) Where if you don't change the oil regularly, you will kill the engine (the piston rings become jammed off centre causing the cylinder bore to become damaged). Oil and filters are cheap, engines are not. So stop trying to save a few dollars, at the risk of damaging your engine.
This doesnt only apply to EFI because carburators also have chokes that let more fuel in at cold. Carbs might even add more fuel than EFI. Injectors measure the air and add precise amount of fuel. Carbs dont really do that much.
To me, the most accurate measure for engines is the quantity of fuel consumed,/ the amount of oil replaced in an oil change. I consider this accurate, no matter how the engine is loaded or used. The only variable is oil temperature, above the break-down temperature of the oil. To determine when to change oil in a gearbox, go by the amount of WORK transmitted through the gears, divided by the quantity of oil in the gear case.
Oil usually gets thicker over time as it goes through the heat cycles......not thinner. If your oil is getting thinner over time.....it is most likely due to fuel dilution.
The oil may appear thicker sue to turning into sludge, the lubricity and shear strength will deplete, in effect thinner, I think that is what is meant. If lots of short journeys combined with cold climate, the oil will often drain very thinned down due to water and fuel in the oil. With diesel engines and air cooled engines oil will degrade faster,
Most of us with any brains will do what it says in the manual. Kms or time whichever comes the sooner. Oil is cheap. Engines are expensive. Changing it early does not hurt. Changing it late does.
We use shell advance ultra 15w50 fully synthetic in my discover 125st model 2012. I change engine oil under 6500-7000km aur annually wise every 15 month from old to new .Now my bike runs 33000km I have no wear and tear in engine. Performance of my 125st is very smooth and refined. I use shell advance ultra 4t 10w40 fully synethic in my tvs ntorq model 2016 it's odometer is above 12000km no issue change my engine oil as above mentioned same as i changed in my 125st bike.
I also have same bike brother........How is the performance of the shell oil? I too wanted to use the same oil but felt full synthetic is bit expensive at 1000 rs MRP for 125cc bike, and semi synthetic option in shell isn't available.....so I had gone with castrol power1 cruise 20w50 semi synth costing half that amt at 500 rs. The performance is good but small drop in mileage
Nice video. One simple yet important factor to increase the drain interval is checking the oil level after every 1000 km and top up. Usually with bikes, the engine oil capacity is between 1 and 1.5 litres. So we would buy 2 litres ofcourse. So best is to keep the 0.5 litres safe and use it for top up everytime the oil level is near the bottom level mark.
@@ramg8176 if piston rings are slightly worn, there will be a drop in level although by how much ? It will depend on how badly they are worn. Minor drops won't mean severe issue. Just needs regular inspection and top up.
@@ramg8176 if 20% drop happens in just 500-600 kms then it isn't a minor drop. Then it's a severe issue. If 20-30% drop is after 2000-2500 kms, it isn't a severe issue.
Excellent review. I usually put very low mileage on my vehicles so I used to stretch the oil change to 2 years, sometimes I forget to change it even at the 3rd year. I always use the best synthetic oils due to delayed oil changes, but I think I need to cap the intervals at 1 to 1.5 years. Thanks for this great informative review. If you want any old oil for testing, I can give it to you from my vehicles.
Great confirmation to my knowledge that a 2 years old oil with gradual 5k is still pretty much acceptable. I have a car that its oil is 7 years with 3k on it. I may do an UOA on it next year or so. I've Seen lots of UOAs in oils at 5 years oil doing fine at low mileages/kms like in this video ... I believe that it is possible, in a sound engine, below 5k you can keep the oil decades long on it without harm of wearing it. Depends a lot on the engine. A misfiring engine maybe, can't handle 1 year 5k miles ...
would be really cool to find out the results on that oil. ive got a similar situation with 4 year oil on 3.8Mm. sounds like its gotten thinner (sound of engine) but looks great and smells ok
My wife has a small displacement Yamaha scooter (125cc) that she uses as a daily driver and she doesn't have a change oil schedule. She only changes it whenever I reminder her to or when I come home (I work from abroad), which is once a year. Her motorcycle is more than 5 years old, aside from the normal wear and tear, it's still running fine
very good video, I have not followed the OEM schedule since the price of oils have become very expensive. I just assess the oil when I check and if it feels viscous, is relatively clean and passes the smell test it goes for anouther round.
You can judge the condition of the oil by useing the oil drop test. Useing the dip stick put a drop of oil on a white calling card or sheet of paper, impuraties will be floating around in the middle of the drop. When you see Black Carbon it´s time to change the oil/filter.
@@AEVMU And when is that exactly? As I pointed out in other articles no two veihicles are the same. One can wear out the oil faster than the next. The visual dip stick test is still the best.
@@markwarnberg9504 According to most owners manuals, most people qualify for the shorter service interval which is usually 5k miles. If you qualify for a longer interval, use that. Plenty of good oil, and I mean a used oil analysis shows it to be good, will look bad.
@@AEVMU 5k is fine, 10k I would not go more. Oil filters can handle that much unless it is really extream conditions. The blotter test tells you if the filter is still doing it´s job, black carbons tells you the filter element is full.
I don't think it is fair to compare new oil to 2 year old oil with 5000 km on it. The comparison should be new oil vs. 2 year old oil at 0km, and nearly new oil vs. 2 year old oil both at 5000 km. Right now we can't tell what part of the degradation is due to being 2 years old or due to 5000 km. Strangely, new oil can sit in the container for a decade (there is no "best before" date), but once in the engine they say it only lasts a year whether you use it or not. Well, I have a generator that had the same oil in it for 10 years (because it never got used, standby). When I changed it, the oil looked brand new in color.
You are absolutely correct. From old literature I remember that in the past oil was checked visually, smelled and hand felt: If engine oil stinks, looks dark black and has got a consistency of honey it is worn out.
I have used the same engine oil in my petrol polo for almost 2 years but it ran just 3000 kms during this period. To be honest I didn't feel much change in performance or sound but still I got it changed after 2 years as a preventive measure!
I may have missed some points in this presentation, but I do have a question. Many oils recommend a 5000km change or a certain numbers of months, typically 3. My question is , with 5000km in 2yrs as per this test are we saying that 5000km in 6months will exhibit lesser degradation? And if I just put 1000km on my oil in 1 year , do I need to change due to oil degradation?
This video was a bit unclear. Oil state wasnt that bad. But the mileage and time wasnt that bad either. You might go another year as i understand. But you must decide yourself.
Depends on the oil. My old service center used to recommend every 6 months or milage for mineral oil and just milage for synthetic. They said that synthetic oil didn't absorb moisture so it didn't form any acids.
This is my experience. Conventional oil change every 3000 to 4000 miles or 6 months. Synthetic every 6000 to 8000 miles or 1 year. Don't trust the manufacturers recommend service intervals on oil changes. They only recommend it to satisfy the EPA and marketing department. The gearbox oil or ATF needs changing too. There is no such thing as 'Life Time Fluid'
I need 1 suggestion.. i have 800cc car that uses 2.5 lt engine oil.. most bottle comes with 3 litre engine oil . Hi Sir I have Purchased Today Castrol Power 1 Ultimate 10W50 Super Bike Engine Oil at 999 from Amazon But It was 2 Year Old Manufactured Sep 2022 Can i Use this Oil Or should i Return This Oil
Thanks for the video. With the exception of the viscosity at the lower temperature.. The results look good for a 2 year old synthetic I have been extending my time between oil changes. When i switched to a year .. the mechanic said to use full synthetic.. And i am hitting 14 months.. but it looks like i can go longer ... I figure 18 months is a good target.
@@HeadshooterGTAS .. Very low mileage.. In a year maybe 1800 km. At the 16 month mark i was at 2500km.. That's why i extended the mileage..past the year. Could i have gone longer towards the 18 months or 2 years.. Perhaps.. But i am in a hot tropical climate which puts more pressure on the oil. Since i dunt have access to a oil testing facility, i decided not to push to far past the 1 year mark... The6 months/ year thing is what the manufacturer recommends... Either mileage or time
If you can't do proper lab oil analysis, do street oil analysis like me - it's the best analysis for my vehicles that cost less than $2000, and definitely best analysis no money can buy (its free)... 😊 Main tests are: smell (does it smell burnt, or the smell reminds you of petrol - fuel diluted). How does it look on dipstick? Right level, no mayonaise, good color (not too dark), droplet travels down the dipstick with right speed/resistance (rough viscosity test, oil is not too thick nor too diluted). Pour the droplet on piece of toilet paper, check for color, does it create dark rings? (how dark?). That combined will give you a rough estimate. Some people suggest to try to rub oil between the fingers, but I avoid that test because engine oil is proven to be carcinogenic.
The higher number (40) is the more important one since that represents operating temperature, the lower number is more important for cold starting. But as a general rule stay with the manufacturer recommendation unless you just can't get it. If you have to use something different than 15-40, 5-40 would be a better choice than say 20-40 or a straight 40. But I'd switch back to 15-40 as soon as you can.
Use open jug or bottle on next oil change, open jug will last atleast a year, if kept tightly closed at room temperatures. Temperature oscilations could cause condensation and oxidation (which is bad), so to make it last longer, its better to keep a used jug of oil inside your house. Don't store it longterm in external garage (without aircon), on the balcony or in the trunk of your car.
Thanks Dear for the detailed analysis, God Bless You😊 but what about the high running engines like my celerio vxi green ( CNG) runs around 250 kms every alternate day and I am using Helix 5w30 fully synthetic so after how many kms I should go for an oil change.drive mostly in city.i am eagerly waiting for your reply as today I have to plan the oil Change.Kindly guide me. First of all thats a lot for creating this content as i m new to this car world and this video help me atleast to understand something about engine oil. my car (Hyundai Grand i10) has driven almost 3200 km and one year old car and just done with 2nd service as engine oil is still orange in color and stickey i was not agreed to change the engine oil during 2nd service but service advisor suggested to change the oil as its 1 yr old and i am confuse whether really do i need to change it right now or i can do after atleast 5k run, service guy said in future if there is any engine related issue found and your record found that you did not change engine oil within 1 yr then i may face some issues, is that correct ? need suggestion
I have 4 year old engine oil sitting in my CBR and has done only 2k kilometres in last 4 years. Recently i started riding the bike again, and clocked another one thousand kilometres in a month... And trust me when i say, the engine oil is absolutely clear like a new oil... It has no burnt smell, and its super smooth to rub between the fingers. And the oil level is spot on. The best part is, engine runs as smooth as on the first day i road it.. and gear shifts are absolutely smooth. I dont think your analysis is anywhere close to being correct. I think your sample size and method was yoo restricted. Why?? Because i also happen to have a car with similar running. It had done only 10 k kilometres in 4 years on the same oil. And when i got it serviced recently, the mechanic said your engine oil is still as good as new. He even told me that i should put the same oil back as it will be wasted. He mentioned that the oil still is transparent red colored. He said most cars this age drain black thik oil when drained. Than i finally told him its 4 years old oil, and he was very surprised. I think people should know the truth about oil life on low running engines... Because only to make more money, we should not waste resources of our planet. We should only do what is required, not because its benifitial to someone else.
If your fuel economy is 60% to that of mfg then do it at 60% mileage then what is mentioned in the service book. You can still take 20% leverage on that. Manufacturers will assume 80% highway run 20% city, same as to show average fuel economy
Lets say i do 100km ride every day, so in 50days i have done 5k km and now need to change the oil. But instead of doing 100km everyday, i do 100km ride in one day and then after 10days i go for another 100km ride so after 500days im done with 5k km.. 500days is more than a year so I shouldve changed the oil after 365days.. but why should i change the oil if the only diffrence between these 2 cases is the interval between the 100km rides?

Absolutelly, if oil bottle sits for a long time and you don't shake it, some additives can remain as sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I think its mostly calcium and magnesium which are useful oil additives, but in time can form sediment - it looks like bit of ash on the bottom of the bottle. Shake a bottle for a few times and additives will be diluted in oil back again - so when you pour the oil they will go to your engine, not remain unused at the bottom of the bottle.

I don't want to sell my bike nor interested to lend someone to use.. my cousine can start the bike but can't ride it... so is it mandatory to change engine oil every year for next 6 years ? If it's not done what would be the loss..! Also, incase if you have any idea on parts that might wearoff due to non usage apart from tyres. Note: Bike will be parked inside my house without any moisture around it with a proper TPH cover.
If it was only 500 km in two years, I would recommend not changing, if it still smells relatively fresh, has not turned into dark black and hand feels still as if it was new. But from distance I would recommend: change it, when you reached 5,000 km in two years.
Bro i have question about buying 3 year old engine oil that is manufactured in 2018 in 8 months and i have put it in my access 125 2007 in 2024 .is oil degrade if box is not opened ?
Don't worry too much about oils. Just use the recommended oil in the manual and interval. Just look at the data sheet and select an oil with over 100 viscosity index. I just used a sae40 api SG on my Yamaha Crux. Mileage are now 99,200. It will son restart to zero and I am still on the stock engine all the parts, except the clutch friction plates. 🤣🤣🤣
Basic engines can run with SG oils. Some manuf. shorten the intervals to save themselves from trouble. People are lazy and ignorant about their vehicles. So we are trying to test if we are wasting anything .

Sorry, but this video is a waste of time. Topic is interesting, but the presentation is poor. Why have you not given an overview of the important parameter e.g. 'before vs after'? A simple test of oil is by smelling (fresh vs stinks bad), visual observation (still has got its original color vs it is dark black) and by hand feeling it (feels new and lubricates well vs you can feel particles, hence high density).

That fuel will seep past the piston rings (compression as well as oil scrapper rings), and end up in the engine oil.

If this doesn't happen the oil will break down quicker (which is also why "highway miles" are less damaging than "city miles"),
Some engines are more sensitive to this than others,
The ones that I know about (due to having the same car), is the Toyota Camry (2011-2017)

800 miles in 2 full years on my Toyota Tundra. Thank you for helping me answer my question. I’m leaning towards do at least a drain and fill

Where will the oil go? Oil level should not fall so much. If it does, then there is a severe problem.
@@ramg8176 if piston rings are slightly worn, there will be a drop in level although by how much ? It will depend on how badly they are worn. Minor drops won't mean severe issue. Just needs regular inspection and top up.
@@RRP1992 Is 20-30% drop a minor drop u say?
@@ramg8176 if 20% drop happens in just 500-600 kms then it isn't a minor drop. Then it's a severe issue. If 20-30% drop is after 2000-2500 kms, it isn't a severe issue.
@@RRP1992 But I never faced such issue in my car as well as my bike. I think oil level should not drop 20% through out the interval.
Yeah I wouldn't do that in modern cars with "floating" piston rings.
Wrong take away from the video. Should be changing the oil every 5k no matter the time.
So you mean if it took me 5 years to reach 3000 miles on my collectors classic car. Is that okay? Please reply THANKS
You must change it every 10,000 km or 1 year atleast@@andrewagustin1349
That's the most outdated thing I've heard in a long time. Just change it as you are supposed to.
My oil is 2years old havent reach 5k yet
Hi bro
Can you review Waxpol Engine Oil Saver + Treatment?
Liqui moly 10w40 vs shell advance long ride which is better?
How do you get the engine oil tested . ?.
Can you share some details
I have used the same engine oil in my petrol polo for almost 2 years but it ran just 3000 kms during this period. To be honest I didn't feel much change in performance or sound but still I got it changed after 2 years as a preventive measure!
Change engine oil in motorcycle in evere 2k 0r 3k kms
They said that synthetic oil didn't absorb moisture so it didn't form any acids.
subbed, because of the good techincal analysis you do
Thank you so much for appreciating the efforts and supporting the channel.
My preference is Shell ultra 5w30 fully synthetic.. can i keep the remaining oil in bottle to use it later for my car in case of i need to do a top up in future ? Will the oil be good enough to be used later which is not sealed anymore?
You can use it.
Dude engine oils won't get bad for 2 years even after opening the seal...
Hi Sir I have Purchased Today Castrol Power 1 Ultimate 10W50 Super Bike Engine Oil at 999 from Amazon
But It was 2 Year Old Manufactured
Sep 2022
Can i Use this Oil Or should i Return This Oil
Thanks for the video. With the exception of the viscosity at the lower temperature.. The results look good for a 2 year old synthetic I have been extending my time between oil changes. When i switched to a year .. the mechanic said to use full synthetic.. And i am hitting 14 months.. but it looks like i can go longer ... I figure 18 months is a good target.
but for how many mileage man ? if you increase time you increase your mileage, how much ? That oil change look expensive to me if you do it every year
@@HeadshooterGTAS ..
Can I switch to 5W-40 grade engine oil from 15W-40 which company recommends for my renault triber?
The higher number (40) is the more important one since that represents operating temperature, the lower number is more important for cold starting. But as a general rule stay with the manufacturer recommendation unless you just can't get it. If you have to use something different than 15-40, 5-40 would be a better choice than say 20-40 or a straight 40. But I'd switch back to 15-40 as soon as you can.
@@Nonplused Thanks a lot
What about the life of engine oil once seal is opened but kept in the same bottle can..?
Same question 😂
Use open jug or bottle on next oil change, open jug will last atleast a year, if kept tightly closed at room temperatures. Temperature oscilations could cause condensation and oxidation (which is bad), so to make it last longer, its better to keep a used jug of oil inside your house. Don't store it longterm in external garage (without aircon), on the balcony or in the trunk of your car.
is repsol good oil?
Thanks Dear for the detailed analysis, God Bless You😊 but what about the high running engines like my celerio vxi green ( CNG) runs around 250 kms every alternate day and I am using Helix 5w30 fully synthetic so after how many kms I should go for an oil change.drive mostly in city.i am eagerly waiting for your reply as today I have to plan the oil Change.Kindly guide me. First of all thats a lot for creating this content as i m new to this car world and this video help me atleast to understand something about engine oil.
my car (Hyundai Grand i10) has driven almost 3200 km and one year old car and just done with 2nd service as engine oil is still orange in color and stickey i was not agreed to change the engine oil during 2nd service but service advisor suggested to change the oil as its 1 yr old and i am confuse whether really do i need to change it right now or i can do after atleast 5k run,
service guy said in future if there is any engine related issue found and your record found that you did not change engine oil within 1 yr then i may face some issues, is that correct ? need suggestion
theres 1 most important reminder when owning any type of vehicle "oil is a lot cheaper than engine" so change your oil regularly
😂
We do not want to die stupid, thus pls tell us, how you define regularly. ☝🏿🧐
Best of luck with 4 year old engine oil dude .
Plz suggest pocket friendly full synthetic engine oil. My vehicle is Karizma R
If your fuel economy is 60% to that of mfg then do it at 60% mileage then what is mentioned in the service book. You can still take 20% leverage on that. Manufacturers will assume 80% highway run 20% city, same as to show average fuel economy
God bless you with more knowledge and money dear ✋🏻
Hello what oil should I use for Activa 4g
And pulsar 150
I used Castrol Power1 in my pulsar 150 but you can also use Castrol Activ it's also a good oil. And for scooter Castrol Activ Scooter is best.
Maybe it's a stupid question but how do I interpret a viscosity of 54.56mm^2/s ? I have seen other dimensions and they are easier for me to interpret.
Bottom line, follow the manufacturer recommendations 🤷🏻♂️ cos oil is way cheaper than an engine 👍🏻

Sir please do a review

Hallo, do you think that we have to shake an oil bottle before use it ?
Absolutelly, if oil bottle sits for a long time and you don't shake it, some additives can remain as sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I think its mostly calcium and magnesium which are useful oil additives, but in time can form sediment - it looks like bit of ash on the bottom of the bottle. Shake a bottle for a few times and additives will be diluted in oil back again - so when you pour the oil they will go to your engine, not remain unused at the bottom of the bottle.
Please suggest best engine oil i can get online and can be trusted for my Apache RTR 160 4v

So what's the conclusion man..is it ok to use oil for 2 year with 5000 km run..
If it was only 500 km in two years, I would recommend not changing, if it still smells relatively fresh, has not turned into dark black and hand feels still as if it was new.
But from distance I would recommend: change it, when you reached 5,000 km in two years.

Don't worry too much about oils. Just use the recommended oil in the manual and interval. Just look at the data sheet and select an oil with over 100 viscosity index.

Basic engines can run with SG oils. Some manuf. shorten the intervals to save themselves from trouble. People are lazy and ignorant about their vehicles. So we are trying to test if we are wasting anything .

I usually like to change engine oil at 60% of its life span.
E.g if 10,000 kms is recommended by the company i will change at 6000kms
Mind you in my case kilometres always comes first and not the time interval as my car does around 15-18000 kms in a year.
i change at 200% of its life. change after 2 years
Every 3500 miles I change
An oil filter only lasts just so long.
There are longlife filters readily available...
Every 6 months regardless. And use synthetic 👍
✌🏾
Sorry, but this video is a waste of time. Topic is interesting, but the presentation is poor.
Why have you not given an overview of the important parameter e.g. 'before vs after'?
A simple test of oil is by smelling (fresh vs stinks bad), visual observation (still has got its original color vs it is dark black) and by hand feeling it (feels new and lubricates well vs you can feel particles, hence high density).
i cannot understand dude!

As a top chef, I don't need anyone to tell me when to change my cooking oil & neither do i need to be told when to change my engine oil.
Is this even English?
I only speak English. I can't understand this dude.
